Chapter eleven
Traitor
"So, she's out of hospital?" Chloe asked Mickey as she got dressed for a busy day. She wanted to be able to enjoy the day, but for now she was trying to get everything done.
Mickey poked his head into the bedroom, "Cassie picked her up this morning," He glanced over Chloe's outfit, but his eyes didn't light up like they used to.
He watched her putting on some lipstick, she was watching him with that expression. "That's good, should we get a card or something?"
"Maybe," Mickey felt like he was getting too good at lying at this point, "Is that a thing?"
Chloe got to her feet slipping on some shoes, "Yes," She kissed him, and like so many times this week, he didn't quite kiss her back. "I'll get the card; you can give to Cassie tonight at work." She sighed walking out of the apartment.
Chloe hadn't noticed it right away, but she couldn't help but feel like something wasn't right with Mickey. It had been four months of him working at the club, and she had a feeling he must be doing something. First, she thought of Cassandra, but the night she went through his phone, she knew it couldn't have been her.
Chloe liked that she could escape to her office, she had caught up on paperwork, and while she glanced to her phone seeing the text, she felt annoyed. She was meant to have a client meet her at the office, but he wanted to talk over lunch, she replied that the office is must better, but he wouldn't budge. So, Chloe had to make sure she got herself to the restaurant he wanted to eat. Even if he was paying, she wasn't going to be showing any gratitude for it.
He was a rich man, and while Chloe glanced over his face, "Like I was saying about your visa."
"We can talk about that later," He was smooth, he poured wine into a glass in front of her, "Enjoy lunch." He was smiling at her.
Chloe sighed, "I am just thinking since we are meant to be discussing the visa you want for you, as well as your wife."
"Mistress," He pointed out, "My wife will be staying here." He added with a grin.
"Okay," Chloe picked the wine glass up downing the drink, she couldn't believe this man, "As I was saying." She stopped talking looking over the man's shoulder to the small café across the street.
She couldn't really believe it at first, but Chloe noticed that they sat next to each other, both of them smiling and laughing as Mickey picked up a glass taking a sip. The fact he never told her that he was meeting up with Cassandra today, but why was she worried.
"Like I was saying," The man carried on, "I want to be able to travel as soon as I can." He turned to see what Chloe was staring at, and then back to her face. "Do you know them?"
Chloe snapped out of it, but then had to do a double take, she could see his hand under the table, he wasn't even hiding it. She watched as his fingers traced the inside of Cassandra's thigh, and she wasn't stopping him. Chloe could only watch as the man who told her she was the sexiest woman he knew, feeling up another woman in public.
Chloe couldn't stop her stomach emptying of all feeling, she wanted to throw up, but at the same time her eyes couldn't look away from them. Chloe could only witness as Cassandra lent over the gap, she kissed him, and all Chloe could see was him kissing her back.
Jumping to her feet, "I'm so sorry," She held her mouth, "I'll reschedule," She held a hand up before finding herself leaving the restaurant in a rush. Part of her wanted them to see her, they would spot her rushing away and be guilty of their actions. Then as Chloe got away, she noticed from the distance they didn't notice anything around them, they were lost in each other.
All the way home Chloe felt sick, she rushed to the bathroom as she got to the toilet in time to throw up, her hands rushed into her hair trying to stop it all. She cried curling up on herself, she trust and loved him, and this was how it was going to end.
Chloe was hurting like nothing before, she thought of the pain with Christos and how Mickey was the one to give her faith again. This wasn't how it was meant to play out, and her mind kept trying to figure out what she could do now. Mickey wasn't meant to be that guy, and while she kept thinking over the last seven months of fighting, holding a resentment for what he did. She wasn't even sure if she loved him, or if she was scared to let him go.
The floor of the bathroom was cold, and while it took her a while to gather her thoughts, she wasn't sure how she was going to keep a straight face when he came home. How could she be the same after catching him in the act.
He didn't know she knew, and part of Chloe had hope, maybe if she tried more, maybe he would be able to see how much she meant to him, she had to get him back into the place he was when they first met.
Getting to her feet she found herself in front of her reflection, she brushed her hands under her eyes trying her best to clean her face with her hands alone. Chloe had to keep it together, she didn't want him to know that she knew. Finally, she could look into her eyes, she couldn't believe why she was going to be this way, but for now she had to keep a level head.
To Chloe it was hard to get through the rest of the week, he laid in the bed with her when he got back from work, and he didn't seem to be there. She didn't want to think about it, but when she rolled to look at him sleeping beside her, all she could see was him with her.
Maybe she should confront him and make him confess his secret. Chloe thought over the scenes in her mind, and each one he would leave her, but maybe she was going to need to leave him. Her mind wouldn't switch off, turning in the bed to try and stop the feeling eating her up from the inside out.
Morning light touching her face Chloe got out of bed, she didn't have any plans today, getting to the kitchen she made something to eat with a drink, her eyes kept focused on the hall, maybe she was going to hold her tongue, it would fizzle out, and maybe she'd have him back. He loved her after all, that is what he told her so many times.
Chloe was about to give up and go out, then stopped hearing the bedroom door open, and Mickey exited the room heading to get himself a drink. "Morning." He smiled pouring some water from the fridge into a glass.
Her eyes studied over his face, "Have you got any plans?" She asked casually.
"No," He scratched the side of her jaw, "I am going to try and get this piece done," He added trying to work out what she was staring at.
Chloe just smiled, he didn't know she saw him, and now she was going to have to not overreact. "I was thinking we'd get out the house."
"I," Mickey started, but paused. "Right now, I just want to get this out of the way, plus I got work tonight." He finished he drink leaving the kitchen.
Getting to her feet Chloe followed him to the bedroom, "I was thinking about things." She started seeing him picking up dirty clothes, "Have you thought of maybe finding another place to work."
"No," He went passed her towards the kitchen to the washer, "Why'd you ask?"
Chloe watched him starting to clean around the kitchen, "It's just, I'm not that comfortable with it." She tried to keep her tone calm, but her eyes were giving it away.
"The second I can find a job that pays me more, I'll jump." He closed the washer after putting the detergent in the machine, and then turned it on.
Chloe bit her bottom lip, "Just think about it." She tried to calm her mind, but at the same time she knew this was it, he didn't know she knew, and he wasn't going to know. "How about we go out for lunch," Chloe wanted to be hopeful, right now she needed to remind him of the love they shared and hold onto it.
"Sure," Mickey smiled that smile, "I just need to finish this first." He pointed into the sink and started to clean up.
She went towards the bedroom, she found herself dressing up, she wanted to try her best at this point.
Mickey poked his head into the bedroom, "I'm going to raincheck on lunch," He sighed, "Just got a call, and Argyris needs help moving." He exhaled, "So I am going to help him out."
"Oh," Chloe shrugged, "Tell him I said hi." She broke into a grin watching Mickey walk away, her face fell with the sound of the closing door.
Holding her hands over her face Chloe started to cry, she didn't know why, but she knew he wasn't going to see Argyris, he was going to her, and all Chloe could do is feel like she had to do something to make him hurt the way she was hurting.
