Klaus knocked his fist on the door. "Open Up!" he yelled. Katherine stood behind him, so if anyone opened the door, they wouldn't see her at first glance.
Stefan pulled the door open. "What do you wa-... Klaus?"
Rebekah casually strolled out from the kitchen. When she saw Klaus at the door, she walked over to Stefan and narrowed her eyes. "Nik, how are you free? I thought I was rid of you for at least a couple of days," Rebekah complained.
"Oh, dear sister. Don't say you haven't missed me. To answer your question, it's always handy to have a couple of witches in your pocket." He smirked for a second before his face dropped drastically. "Why are you still here with these pathetic traitors anyways, Rebekah? You do remember that only yesterday they mercilessly slaughtered Kol. How could you take their side, instead of helping your beloved brother take the revenge we deserve."
Rebekah rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "I could ask you the same question. You did promise Elena and Jeremy that you would kill them, but you've had since yesterday, and you haven't. We started to assume you don't want them dead after all. Are we correct or what?"
"It was an act of impulse. I've had time to reconsider."
"Then what are you doing here?" Stefan joined in on the conversation.
"I want to find the cure just as much as you do, so please. Tell me. Where will I find Jeremy Gilbert? Surely killing my brother must have been some form of necessity to create the full map needed to find the cure," he scoffed.
Stefan nodded, understanding of Klaus's bitterness. He had not been too big on the idea of killing Kol either, but it was what had to be done. "He and Elena just left with Damon to pack up some stuff at their house. We're leaving tomorrow morning since we have everything we need for the trip. The map, the tombstone, and the location. You don't need to do anything else other than not kill anyone, and we'll get the cure for everyone. Including you."
"Actually... I have the tombstone." Katherine stepped out from behind Klaus with a secretive look and a smirk playing on her lips. "Have you checked your little hiding place lately Bekah? Noticed anything missing?"
"Katherine," Rebekah sneered, ready to launch at her.
Klaus took a step between his sister and his prisoner, raising his hand. "Now now, Rebekah. Be nice," he defended. Rebekah and Stefan looked baffled from Klaus to Katherine and Katherine to Klaus, as they couldn't figure out why on earth they were together. Especially why he was protecting her.
"Nik? What is this? Why on earth are you with Katherine Pierce? I must be hallucinating."
"Not at all, little sister. This is very much real," Klaus answered, fully entering the house.
Katherine wandered after him like a dog on a leash. Stefan's eyes followed her as she leaned against the couch, her eyes on Klaus. She noticed how Stefan was dying to ask her why she was there, but unfortunately, she couldn't tell him anything at the moment.
"Although, we don't have very much time for questions. Because as your boyfriend here said, you are leaving soon, and we cannot have any of that now can we?" Klaus used his hybrid speed to snap Rebekah's neck before she could even blink. "I'm sorry sweetheart, at least I decided not to dagger you this time."
Stefan was caught off guard, so he didn't get a chance to escape before Klaus was standing before him. "Whoever finds the cure first decides what to do with it. I do not trust you, and since you don't trust me either, I was almost certain you wouldn't tell me where Bonnie is. So I decided compelling it out of you was a safer strategy. Now, feel like telling me where to find my least favorite witch?"
"She's with Caroline, they're trying to find the sword you have hidden," Stefan said reluctantly.
"Magnificent. And Tyler?"
"He fled from town the second he found out you were gone."
Klaus chuckled. "Gold medal for bravery I see. Oh well, he will have to wait for now. You've been very helpful Stefan, now it's time for a little nap, don't you think?" He snapped his neck as well, before turning to Katherine. "Come on sweetheart, it's time to pick up the Gilbert boy."
Klaus walked right into the living room without knocking. "Elena, you have visitors," he shouted. "Come out, come out wherever you are."
He saw a shadow flash towards him as Damon suddenly appeared in front of him.
"Damon. I can't say I have missed you very much."
"What're you doing here?" Damon asked and narrowed his eyes. He then noticed Katherine and tried not to look surprised, even though anyone with a working eye could see his confused facial expression. "And what is she doing here?"
Klaus gave him a friendly smile. "We're both here because we want the cure as much as you do. Besides, you need the sword that I so kindly brought with me. Now, where's the map in need of translation?"
Damon didn't drop his guard. "Something's off. You'd never be in the same room as Katherine without slashing her head off her body."
Klaus, impatient as usual, gashed his hand inside Damon's chest and grabbed a hold of his heart. "As I told my sister, I have no time for interrogations." He squeezed his heart slightly and ravished in Damon's frightened expression.
He then turned his look upwards, to the stairs.
"Jeremy, show yourself before Damon dies," he yelled, and soon enough Elena ran downstairs with Jeremy right behind her.
"Klaus, let him go," Elena cried as she was responded to with laughter.
"Anything for you, love." Klaus removed his hand from Damon's chest and gestured to Katherine. "Katerina, if you may."
Katherine took his clue and snapped Damon's neck as Klaus sped to Elena and compelled her to stay put.
He then turned to Jeremy who stood frozen, watching it all unfold. "Now, Jeremy, you'll have to sit down on the couch as Katerina and I have a look at that map of yours. If you even try to refuse, I'll rip the head right off of your sister's neck."
Klaus smiled wickedly as Jeremy sat down hesitantly, scowling at the two of them. Elena sent a nasty look to Katherine, which was quickly returned.
Ten minutes later, the map was all decoded. Katherine turned the handle one last time as Klaus translated the last sentence. He had read all the other sentences aloud, but this time he kept quiet.
"And? What does it say?" an impatient Katherine asked. Klaus sent her a look, nodding towards Elena, signifying that he couldn't say it in front of her. Katherine nodded in response and turned to Jeremy. "So, guess our work here is done. Thank you for lending us your time," she laughed and winked.
She got up with the sword in her hands, ready to leave when someone walked in the door.
"Klaus?" Caroline gasped as she entered, noticing Klaus and Katherine who were on their way out before she noticed the apparent body on the floor. Bonnie acted quicker, walking right past Caroline and quickly scoped the scene.
"Hello, love. Excellent timing, I must admit," Klaus sent her a flirtatious look.
"Caroline! Bonnie! You have to-," Elena couldn't finish the sentence before Katherine sped over and snapped her neck.
"I'm truly sorry about this," Klaus apologized as he snapped Caroline's neck as well. "Katerina, quick!" He ordered her as Bonnie had already started to mutter a spell. Katherine quickly put her down with the syringe Klaus had given her.
Klaus triumphed over the four unconscious bodies on the floor. They had long forgotten about Jeremy before he ran out the porch door. Katherine was about to run after him, but Klaus grabbed her arm and stopped her.
"Let him run, we don't need him. Her, however," he said, nodding to Bonnie. "Carry her to the car and put her in the backseat."
They left Caroline, Elena, and Damon to recover on their own in the house, as they brought Bonnie with them to the car. When they had both sat down in their seats, Klaus turned to Katherine. "Were you aware that there's only one dose?"
Katherine thought about it. Only one dose? She and Elijah would have never seen that one coming. She shook her head.
"Well, there is. Which obviously changes things."
Klaus was in deep thoughts, debating what he would do when they found the cure. Should he give it to Rebekah, to make her happy? He didn't want a human little sister though did he. Then he should give it to Elena, to make more hybrids. But then she would get her will, which she didn't deserve after killing his brother in cold blood. The best thing was probably to store it for safekeeping.
"Call Elijah, and don't tell him you're with me. Make him meet you at your apartment, or wherever you used to live. With the tombstone."
Katherine reluctantly fished her phone out of her pocket, not wanting to trick Elijah. She scrolled through her contacts until she saw his name, then pressed the green button. She put the phone to her ear when she saw him answer.
"Elijah... Yes, I'm fine⦠I'm sorry, I got caught up. In my defense, you were late first, I waited... I can meet you now though... Please, I need to see you... Okay great, my place then?... Good, bring the tombstone... Bye." The smile that had appeared on her face whilst talking to her boyfriend soon faded after she hung up. "He will be there soon. It will be easier if you let me drive, the road there is a bit complicated."
Katherine took a deep breath and pulled the door handle to her apartment. She could sense Elijah's presence inside.
"Elijah," she ran into his arms as he lifted her up for a hug.
"Katerina," he murmured as he carefully put her down, gently cupping her cheek with his palm. "I've missed you," he said as he greeted her with a kiss.
She kissed him back softly, wrapping her hands around his. However, she quickly had to end it. Klaus had ordered her to get to the point fast.
"Did you bring it? The tombstone?" She fidged nervously as he pulled it out from a black bag he held under his arm. "Great," she gulped and reached for the rock, but he pulled it away from her.
"Katerina. What's the matter? You're acting strange."
Katherine tried to brush him off. "Nothing. I'm fine. Just in a hurry, that's all."
Elijah gave her a look she knew all too well. He was suspicious of her. "You're anxious, I can tell. Is there something you're afraid of?"
Rather someone. She opened her mouth, but something stopped her from talking. Compulsion, of course.
When she didn't answer, a light went up for Elijah.
"Are you compelled?"
Katherine forced her lips together, squinting her eyes. She cursed silently because she had to keep quiet, something she hated.
"It makes sense now. I doubt you have encountered Rebekah without her killing you, so... Did Niklaus?"
He took her silence as a yes.
"You're under Niklaus's compulsion?" Elijah seemed angered at his discovery. He loved his brother, but Klaus's grudge against Katerina was something he had always disliked. He couldn't keep her safe from Klaus, the only being stronger than him, which is why he had helped her set up negotiations with finding the cure. It seemed as if Klaus had still found a way to get her in his grip again, and Elijah cursed himself for not having been there to protect her. "I will free you, Katerina. Mark my words."
Katherine felt a great sense of relief when Elijah understood. She couldn't understand why Klaus had let her see Elijah, was he thinking he wouldn't find out? Well, Klaus had always been the reckless type, so it might have been that he simply didn't care if Elijah knew she was with him or not.
Although Katherine knew better than to get her hopes up when it came to Klaus, she was at least now one step closer to getting freed from him again. Elijah was one of the few people who could trick Klaus, or at least talk some sense into him.
"You have to give me the tombstone, if not he'll kill me. Or worse."
Elijah nodded in understanding and put the stone in her hands. With one forehead kiss, he bid her farewell. "I'll be seeing you soon, my love."
