Katherine woke up the next morning with a strange feeling. She was both worn out yet replenished with a new energy from the information she had been given the night before, as well as her night's rest. Surprisingly, she had slept better that night than in months.
She noticed a heavy weight over her chest and realized an arm was wrapped around her. She turned her head to see Klaus sleeping next to her and the memories from the night before started flooding her mind. Somehow she was thankful to Klaus for stopping them from going further, but on the other hand, she couldn't believe she had even kissed him. Because who was he to her other than the man who slaughtered her family and forced her on the run for five centuries? What was she to him other than the girl who broke his ritual and stole his moonstone? And then he had the audacity to ask for her forgiveness, and she had the audacity to feel more contempt by those words than by those spoken by any of her previous lovers that she felt desperate enough to beg him to sleep with her? She had been there for a week, and she was already kissing her enemy? That was next-level Katherine. She cursed herself. She had loved every second of it, that was what scared her the most.
Katherine got up to change out of yesterday's outfit, the outfit that now had Klaus's scent all over, and she felt the shame from last night creep onto her. As she started opening the drawer, she heard Klaus wake up behind her.
"Awake so soon?" he asked and started getting up from the bed.
"I'm going to find Bonnie," she answered almost bitterly as she harshly pulled out a shirt from the drawer. "And when the spell is done I'm leaving."
"Leaving?" he asked, walking over to her to put one of her curls behind her ear. "I won't let you just run away, and not to forget we made a deal. It doesn't just end when you have gotten what you wanted."
She exhaled sharply and looked away, frustrated. "No, I can't stay here anymore! I- I don't know who I'm turning into."
"Is this about last night?" he asked, his tone still gentle as he made her look up at him. "You have all the time to figure it out you know, now that you'll live."
"I don't want to know," she sighed, becoming breathless the longer she stared into his eyes. Actually daring to remain in eye contact with him, and on top see him in this new light, it scared her. He looked like a different person entirely. Before, whenever she looked into his eyes, all she could see was hatred, and all she could feel was fear, but now she saw the memories of the night before and all the feelings she had experienced in that strange, yet familiar moment.
Perhaps Katherine had never really known him at all. She just knew the version of him that he had shown her. The cruel side, the side that Katherine had studied and learned how worked, the one she calculated her movements around to avoid perfectly. The side that she had hated and had hated her in return. Never had she known Klaus to be able to show this caring and understanding for others. Especially for someone like her, who had wronged him in the past and earned his wrath. She knew people like her, to Klaus, only existed to get disposed of. At least that's what she had thought all these years.
"I'm done playing this game, Katerina," he murmured, making Katherine snap out of her trance. "Just admit your feelings for me. Running isn't an option anymore."
"I don't have feelings for you!" she said, frustrated, madder at herself than him. That she could ever dare look at him as anything else than a monster.
"Are you telling me you felt nothing last night?"
"I was just feeling lonely," she said without hesitation, even though it was a complete lie. She pushed past him and headed for the door. "I'm going to change, don't follow me."
Katherine first went to the kitchen to grab some breakfast and check if Bonnie happened to be there. As she stepped into the kitchen, she couldn't find the girl anywhere, so she just sighed and walked over to the fridge.
Katherine searched through the refrigerator. Living with vampires wasn't the most practical when it came to food. It was just like living with Stefan and Damon all over again. She grabbed what remained of an old cheese and some stale bread. Who the hell puts bread in the fridge?
She walked over to the kitchen counter and started making some toast. She hadn't eaten in almost a full day, so she was starving. She started spreading the butter when she heard a noise and saw Kol skipping into the kitchen with a scone in his mouth.
"Katherine!" he greeted when he spotted her, taking a bite out of his scone. "How are you? I heard about what happened."
Katherine raised her brows. "What? What did you hear?" she asked, slightly paranoid.
Kol walked over to the kitchen table and pulled out a chair. "That you had a heart attack?"
She let out a relieved breath. "Oh that. Yeah it sucks, but I'm going to get better."
"Good, it would get remarkably more boring around here without you," he noted with a grin.
She smiled. "Same goes for you."
Their conversation was soon disturbed by a second Mikaelson brother entering the kitchen. As soon as Elijah noticed Katherine by the counter, he rushed over to her.
"Katerina, how are you feeling?" he asked, looking worried. "I wanted to visit you yesterday, but unfortunately I had business I absolutely had to attend, and when you got back from the hospital you had already gone to your room."
"I'm better, thanks for your concern." She gave him a reassuring smile, although she felt guilty about what she had done with his brother. She knew Elijah still loved her. "Have you seen Bonnie by the way?"
"I believe she's in her room studying. Was there anything in particular you wanted to speak with her about?"
"Yeah, it's about the spell she's found."
"She found it?" his worried expression soon calmed, and his lips curved upwards into a smile. "You're going to live..." he exhaled, primarily to himself.
"Lucky me," she said and took a big bite out of her toast before making her way to Bonnie's room.
Bonnie's door was already open, so Katherine just walked right in. She was sitting on the floor, surrounded by two open grimoires, at least ten books, and a pen in her hand. She looked deep in thought.
"Any updates?"
"Katherine!" Bonnie jumped at her voice. "You scared me," she shook her head before picking up one of the grimoires and putting it on the bed. "In fact, yes. Look here," she said and pointed at a paragraph.
Katherine walked over to her and glanced down at the page, reading the lines aloud. "In case of mistakes, this potion could remove even the darkest of magic. The root of the spell has to be reversed after one has drunk two deciliters of the following liquid. A list of ingredients and supplies is listed below. Only use if it is an absolute necessity, messing with powerful magic is never the right way..." Katherine shrugged. "Looks promising enough. What are we waiting for? Let's do it."
"No Katherine, did you even read the whole thing? It says that in the case of a powerful spell, at least two powerful witches are needed. The cure was made by one of the most powerful witches to have ever existed, I can't do it alone."
"Oh yeah, Klaus told me he's working on that."
"Yeah, I know. Only problem is that the witches in New Orleans hate vampires, they probably won't cooperate."
Katherine smirked and looked over at her. "Believe me when I say Klaus can be persuasive."
"Well I just hope he doesn't hurt them. They might not be of my coven, but I still feel a loyalty to them."
"Why are you doing this, really? What do you get in exchange for helping me? You wouldn't do this voluntarily."
Bonnie put down the grimoire again and started reading in one of the books. "Klaus promised to give me one of the grimoires if I was successful. I decided it was worth a shot."
"Well, this better work then. Wouldn't want you to lose that grimoire."
"Bonnie?" a female voice called from the door, making both of them turn their head.
"Rebekah, what do you want?" Bonnie asked.
"I need you to do a spell for me, please," she begged as she entered the room.
Bonnie crossed her arms. "I'm kinda busy right now. What kind of spell?"
"I need you to make Kol shut up. He's been annoying me all morning."
Katherine snickered and Bonnie's lips curved slightly as well. "That's it?" she asked.
"You can't handle your own brother Rebekah?" Katherine asked jokingly.
"Believe it or not, Original brothers are the biggest pain of all," Rebekah snorted, crossing her arms.
"Well then, I got an idea. I can make him busy for the day. Bonnie gets to continue working in peace, and you get rid of him as well," Katherine compromised. It would work in favor of all of them. Rebekah would get a breather from her brother, and Bonnie getting to work undisturbed would favor both of them, since Katherine would get cured faster and Bonnie would get her grimoire. Besides, Katherine didn't mind Kol's company - he was pretty similar to her in many things, after all.
Rebekah raised her brow, her smirk way too familiar to that of her brother. "Sure, have fun torturing yourself."
"Kol," Katherine called as she finally found him in the living room.
He turned his head at her voice. "Katherine. What's up?"
"Wanna drink together? There's nothing to do around here, I'm desperate for some fun."
"You and me both darling. Beer?" Kol offered, conveniently grabbing a bottle that stood not too far from where he was sitting on the couch.
"Not a fan," she declined as she went over to the liquor cabinet and pulled out a bottle of white wine instead.
"Klaus hasn't sent those vampires to look after you this time?" he questioned.
"No, fortunately. Actually I don't even know where he is. I'm assuming he went out since I haven't seen him around in a while."
"I think he had business with some werewolves, or witches. I didn't really pay attention when he told me," Kol shrugged. "Wanna play a game?"
"Sure. What do you have in mind?"
"Truth or dare. You in?"
Katherine raised a brow. "Truth or dare? Aren't we a bit too old to be playing a children's game?"
"What, don't tell me you're keeping secrets from me?" he teased.
She snorted, smiling as she shook her head. "Fine, I go first. Truth or dare?"
"Dare."
"I dare you to empty this bottle in twenty seconds," she challenged, reaching him the bottle of wine.
"Are you trying to poison me Katherine?" he joked, grabbing the bottle from her hands.
She smirked. "You'll live."
Katherine watched in amusement as he finished the bottle within the time limit. He squinted his eyes when reaching the bottom but managed to finish it nonetheless. He put the bottle down on the table with a thud and wiped his mouth.
"Wow, impressive." Katherine clapped a little with her hands.
"Okay, my turn. Truth or dare?"
Katherine was sure Kol tried to get her to spill her secrets since he had asked her to play the silly game, so she had her answer ready. "Dare."
"You're a daredevil like me? I like it." Kol grabbed his beer bottle from earlier. "Well you made me drink an entire bottle of wine, so now it's your turn. Since you're human I'll go easy on you. Finish this bottle. There's only a little left."
She pouted. "But it tastes so gross."
Kol shook his head and waved the bottle in her face. "Drink."
She sighed and grabbed the bottle, taking a sip to get used to the bitterness. After complaining about how terrible the taste was, she finished it. He was right, there hadn't been that much left.
"There. I did it," she said, placing the bottle on the table. As she leaned back up, she felt herself getting a bit dizzy as her legs started swaying. "Woah."
She almost fell backward, but Kol caught her just in time. "You have a terrible tolerance," he noted, looking down at her.
She moved a hand to her head to rub her temple. "I know, blame it on the humanity," she groaned as Kol put her back on her feet.
"Katerina?" a voice yelled from another room. They both recognized it to be Klaus's.
"Living room," she yelled back.
Klaus used his vampire speed and ran to her. "I have news. And why are you drinking? Forgotten that you're on the verge of death?" he asked when he noticed the bottles on the table and the stench of alcohol on both of them.
"Yeah well I'm bored," she said simply. "What is it?"
"I'd like to speak to you in private. Kol, if you may," he said, indicating for his brother to leave the room.
"Fine, fine. I'll just leave whenever you tell me to Nik." Kol rolled his eyes before speeding out of the room.
Katherine watched Kol leave the room before turning to Klaus again. "You just had to ruin the fun like that?"
"This is more important than poisoning yourself with alcohol. You see, we're leaving for New York tomorrow. I managed to track down a witch from a very powerful bloodline."
Katherine's eyes lit up. "We're going to New York? Yes! My favorite shopping city," she smiled.
"I thought you'd be more excited over the fact that you're going to live, but any excitement is good," he said, the ghost of a smile forming on his lips when watching Katherine's enthusiastic state.
Katherine was so happy she almost hugged him at that moment, but she stopped herself. "Thank you."
Klaus nodded. "Just upholding my part of the deal."
