Chapter 3

Life worth saving

Jaden P.O.V

Purple eyes met my black ones. Eyes full of shock. I instantly pulled away.

"Oh thank god you are awake" I sighed

She weakly looked around and tried to speak. But her throat seemed dry. I shoot up and pulled out a cup and filled it.

After I gave her the water, we locked eyes. "Who are you?"

I pulled out a small book and pen, wrote down her name, Sheele, and wrote that she is fully able to speak. "Oh I'm Jaden"

"Why did you save me?"

I tilted my head. "Don't you want to want to live? I know that human nature is to fight for your life."

"That doesn't answer my question"

"That doesn't answer mine either," I said as I wrote down a few more observations. "Why did you prioritize your friend over finishing that guard?"

"Her life was in danger, I'm wasn't going to let her die" She replied as if it was the most simple thing ever.

That lowkey bothered me. "The reports said you weren't the sharpest sword in the army and I'm starting to see why."

She grew a bit irritated at that. "What was I supposed to do? Let my friend get the life squeezed out of her?"

I shot her a brief glance from over my book for effect. "If you killed the guard the dog thing would have stopped in its tracks, therefore less risk for saving your friend. If you want to say time is an issue with this, it would take more time to turn your back on your target rush over, and cut off that dog's limbs. Simply shoving a blade through her head would have been far quicker"

She deflated.

"Also in terms of you and your fighting, your easily one of the most skilled I've seen, though you use your scissors like a sword, wouldn't it be easier to just carry a sword? Or maybe learn how to fight using your scissors as actual scissors."

She had no response.

"Sorry, that was a bit much."

"No, you have a few points there."

I put the book down. "Sheele, I am more than just some random guy that nitpicks people for almost dying. I'm a General of the army"

Her eyes widened and before she could do or say anything I placed a hand over her mouth. "I'm trying to help you. You would have died if it wasn't for me. If I didn't step in and treat you you would be dead. So let me finish before you get aggressive, you can't afford that in your condition"

She gave a slow nod and I released her.

"With that out the way, I'm going to make one thing clear, I saved you simply because you were dying. I don't want your body, information on Night Raid, to torture you, or even rat you out."

"With that out the way, I want to help you and your cause. I am sick of the capital and so many people having their way. I can't even kill the viruses that have infected this place."

Sheele seemed surprised for one thing. "What you expected just because I'm a general I'm a douchebag that enjoys all this carnage and fuckery? Hell no, I was raised on people with slightly more money than my poor family acting like they were better than me, I had already seen the corruption of this world when my parents were killed and I was forced into assassin training. Assassins around the world probably know about me after I killed my target and just vanished. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they still have my file."

Sheele tried to sit up and I reached forward to help her. "I'm sure you have someone you wish to see huh?" I asked with a wistful smile.

"I do"

"Lucky you and them."

I stood up and brought a few bags closer to her. "In here is some food and in this bag is extra clothes if you want."

I jutted my thumb back, motioning to the door, "Once you can walk on your own, there is a bathroom about 1 meeter away"

I turned around and started to leave, "I'll leave so you can change out of those clothes, Sorry they're not too fancy, I was a bit pressed for cash. I'll get you some nicer ones another time. I would suggest moving looking where you were shot, I don't want you to have some kind of panic attack while you are naked. I will respect you and all that so I'd rather not have you mad at me for seeing you in your birthday suit."

After maybe ten minutes she called me back in. She grabbed the white nightgown I place in there. "So Sheele, I wanted to ask you something."

She blinked a bit and sounded a lot nicer than I recalled her sounding. "Yes?"

"How much do you remember?"

You got guts, tampering with fate.

"I was fighting and I slashed off that dog's massive arms. And-and...I was shot, I couldn't move my body-" She cut herself off by clutching her head in agony. I noticed some blood was leaking out of her nose. I quickly blocked her nose with a tissue so blood wouldn't get anywhere unnecessary. Soon enough she stopped her groaning and clutching her skull like it was being shoved apart from the inside.

"I- I was supposed to die..." She said softly.

This is what happens when you free people from their fate, now your destiny has been changed too.

Excuse me? Could you repeat that last part?

This is the reaction to people that their fates were changed. They see what was supposed to happen to them with a splitting headache and nose bleed. Her life is now within your hands.

HOLD UP! HER LIFE IS WHERE?!

"I-I was supposed to be shot then as my body fell, I would be bitten in half by that Imperial Arms. After that, I would use the last of my life to create a distraction for Mine to escape" She said softly.

"Well according to the dark and ominous voice in my head, this is what happens when someone prevents someone's fated death."

"The what in your head?"

"Long story"

We both sat in awkward silence. If this was some cliche scene from a romance book or movie, something to do with love would happen. But here all that's happening is it's getting quieter and quieter. I wish this was from sappy romance cuz literally nothing is happing.

I cleared my throat a bit and opened my mouth to say something...but nothing came out.

I stood up. "I got to go to work. Uh, see you later I guess?"

She gave a small nod.

"I'm sorry there aren't any books or anything around. I couldn't really stock up."

"It's fine"

A thought flashed through my mind. "By the way, I'll see if I can get my hands on Extase for you."

"That would be great!" She exclaimed happily.

As I walked out the door I called into the house. "Get some sleep! If you need me, tap the metal in your chest."

I walked out and just teleported to my room in the palace. I collapsed on the bed. Good god, give me the sweet release of death so I don't have to go to work in like 4 hours

That can be arranged

I take that back, you're probably going to take over my body and do weird shit

I put myself in bed correctly and looked out the window. It's raining. That can't be good.

.

(At Night raid base)

.

No one made a sound. Only the rain made noise after the story Mine had to tell. All of the current Night Raid members stood quiet as shock embedded itself within their bones. They could only assume that Sheele was dead. They knew that someone wielding metal had come and tried to save her but, the chances were that she was dead now.

The cold rain soaked into their bones as they all cried silently, holding onto that small hope that she was ok.

"Where...Where is the one that did this? Mine!" Tatsumi walked up to Mine and placed his hands on her shoulders.

"Wait." Najenda, stopping Tatsumi from doing anything he could regret. "What are you planning Tatsumi?"

"What else!?" Tatsumi exclaimed. "I'm going to kill her and avenge Sheele!"

After that Bulat punched Tatsumi to knock some sense into him. To remind him that they all knew what this job could do to them. That there was a small hope she was ok.

Mine swore vengeance in her mind. For harming her friend to the point they don't know if she's still alive.

.

(Back with my sleeping body)

I felt a sudden chill pass over me. Oh fuck

The Ice queen has returned, and will likely be able to see right through me.

I can't fight Esdeath, she's too powerful. To fight a goddess like that would be suicide. I'll have to pray she doesn't notice anything is off.

She made quick work of her job in the north, far too quick. I might end up being assigned somewhere far too. Which couldn't be too good for me if they search my house. Both my and a wanted woman's DNA is in there.

If push comes to shove, I just hope that we have lived lives worth saving.

A relatively short chapter here, sorry about that, I've run dry on ideas for this story I can use now. How does the next chapter being about my sister's capabilities sound?

As many say, tell me what you think in the reviews!

Ah not going to say that again, too cheerful
