Welcome back to Injustice Dragons Among Us 2. Last time, Spyro and Cynder arrived back in the Injustice World, courtesy of Lex Luthor. After getting some introductions out of the way, Spyro and Harley Quinn left on a mission into the depths of Slaughter Swamp to stop the Society from getting a hold of Fear Toxin courtesy of Scarecrow. So what awaits in the swampy depths? Read on to discover...
Spyro's Log
I can't believe this is happening honestly. This world is somehow in chaos again. But it seems like Lex weighed all the options before calling us in at least. That's about the only good thing about this. And now I'm heading into the depths of Slaughter Swamp with Harley Quinn while Cynder gets all chummy back with the company back at base. Let's hope these new recruits are honestly worth their weight.
(Our story resumes in Slaughter Swamp, where Red Hood and Atom can be seen sitting around a fire, waiting for the team to arrive, when they suddenly see Spyro glide into the scene with Harley Quinn on his back.)
Harley Quinn: I'll say it, riding on a dragon's back is way cooler than it was in the movies!
Spyro: Glad you enjoyed the experience. Good thing for you I hit a growth spurt in the last five years.
(At this point, Red Hood and Atom arrive on the scene.)
Red Hood: I take it the giant's our way out of this?
Harley Quinn: Spyro, meet some of the new names on the block. Jason Todd, alias Red Hood. And Ryan Choi, the Atom.
Spyro: Nice to meet both of you.
Harley Quinn: So how's it going out here, boys?
Red Hood: Not much time for handshakes and how-do-you-dos, Scarecrow's goons are getting ready to move everything.
Spyro: Then let's get moving.
(And that's exactly what they do, moving deep into the swamp, mobilizing to right outside a waterside cabin, where Scarecrow is meeting with Deadshot, discussing the shipment.)
Deadshot: Can't your men move any faster?!
Scarecrow: These canisters are heavier than usual, mostly to keep the gas under constant pressure.
Deadshot: I really don't care how heavy they are, I don't need Grodd taking my head off because the shipment's late! You already know what he did to the rest of the Squad.
Scarecrow: You needn't fear my friend, everything will be ready for tomorrow's attack.
Spyro: (In whispers) Tomorrow? What's tomorrow? Something special?
Atom: It's just an ordinary Tuesday as far as I know.
Harley Quinn: All I know is we've got to put a stop to this. Now.
(While the four were talking, vines have crept over them, and as they prepare to move in, the entire group is snatched up by them, revealing Poison Ivy is in control of the situation)
Poison Ivy: Well, well, Harley. Fancy meeting you here.
Harley Quinn: Red! How long has it been! You here to help us take these punks out?
Red Hood: (Looking to Spyro) Should I tell her or do you want to?
Harley Quinn: Tell me what?
Spyro: Harley, I'm thinking she's one of those punks.
Atom: Not like her binding us up like trussed hams gave that away.
Harley Quinn: There's no way!
(And just like that, Scarecrow comes around the corner, as if to confirm Spyro's suspicions)
Scarecrow: Nice catch, Ivy.
Harley Quinn: Red, how could you!?
Poison Ivy: Luthor was supposed to take better care of the Green, yet all he's done is rebuild the concrete jungles of Metropolis and Gotham. There's no difference between him and his buddy Superman where I stand.
(While Ivy monologues, Spyro frees a claw and starts sawing through the vines holding him)
Red Hood: If you think Grodd and company give a damn about the Green, then you're dead wrong.
Poison Ivy: Grodd will keep his promises or he's next on my list.
Spyro: You know, I was really hoping Harley's good influence status would rub off on you. Guess I was wrong.
(With that, Spyro cuts himself free from the vines holding him before cutting down Red Hood, Atom, and Harley Quinn. Knowing Harley's too emotionally involved in the situation, Spyro sends her and the rest to deal with Scarecrow while he takes to Poison Ivy.)
Spyro: I'm genuinely shocked at you, Dr. Isley. You and Harley seemed to have a great working relationship. You were best friends, yet you betray that!
Poison Ivy: The old days may have been fun, but in recent years I'm all business.
(Now angered, Spyro and Poison Ivy throw down, and ultimately, Dr. Isley is down for the count)
Spyro: I guess I should consider your Birds of Brey membership revoked.
(With Poison Ivy down, Spyro turns his attention to the others, who appear to have been dosed with Scarecrow's Fear Toxin)
Spyro: You three okay? You look like you got hit with some pretty heavy Fear Toxin sprays.
Harley Quinn: Please, I used to huff this stuff for kicks! I'm just trying to figure out how you're unaffected.
Spyro: Different biology maybe?
(At this point, Scarecrow appears with a tank on his back and sprayer in hand) Then you'll appreciate my new formula.
(With that, Scarecrow douses the group in Fear Toxin. Harley is knocked out almost instantly, but Spyro is able to maintain his sanity, long enough to see Scarecrow in his glowing eyed, chain-scythe wielding form)
Scarecrow: You have a higher tolerance than I expected.
Spyro: Helping Cynder master her Fear element will do that to you.
Scarecrow: Interesting. Then let's see what it is you fear.
(And now Spyro and Scarecrow start duking it out. Scarecrow puts up a good fight, but even then, Spyro holds the advantage and debilitates him instantly)
Spyro: You're violating your Hippocratic Oath, Doctor.
Scarecrow: Well then, an interesting result. (Pulls out a Fear Gas Grenade) Perhaps a more specialized formula will get you.
(With that, Scarecrow throws the grenade at Spyro, and as the gas leaks out, we see Spyro brought back to Convexity, where he stands before the altar, somehow)
Spyro: What... what is this? (Realizes what's happening) This isn't real. This is Scarecrow's Fear Toxin. I don't know how it's working on me, but it is.
(And just as Spyro realizes what's going on, something emerges from the altar, something familiar to him)
Spyro: No. Not you.
?: Oh, but it is me. The one you fear most.
(And with that, Malefor emerges from the altar)
Malefor: And now, I am here to bring you to where you belong.
Spyro: This isn't real. This. Isn't. Real!
Malefor: Oh I assure you, it's very real. As real as the destiny you ignore. You were meant to bring about the Great Cleansing, as I was. But perhaps I was wrong about which world you were to cleanse. Perhaps it's this one.
Spyro: No!
Malefor: You cannot run from it, Spyro!
Spyro: You may be the only other Purple Dragon I can confirm existed, but you don't define who I am!
(And now these two battle it out, but just as in the real world, Spyro is victorious.)
Spyro: You will never win, Malefor.
(Just as Spyro says that, the Fear Toxin induced delusion wears off as Spyro rejoins the real world in Slaughter Swamp, just as Scarecrow's Fear Toxin shipment is about to go out)
Harley Quinn: Good time for you to wake up, because we've got boats to stop!
Spyro: Any plans?
Harley Quinn: (Breaks open a crate, revealing old mines) Looks like Scarecrow never got the chance to gas these.
Spyro: I've got an idea. Atom, shrink these mines and place them on the end of bullets. Red Hood?
Red Hood: Say no more.
(And with that, the plan goes into action. Atom grabs up the mines and shrinks with them before climbing onto Red Hood's bullets in the magazine and attaching them. And as Red Hood shoots the bullets at the boats, the mines return to full size somehow and cause each boat to explode as they hit them)
Atom: Smart thinking, Spyro. I never would have thought to use the suit that way.
Harley Quinn: Told you this guy was a legend.
(But Spyro doesn't hear them, instead he notices something is up with the water surrounding them)
Red Hood: You okay, big guy?
Spyro: Swamp water doesn't react to explosions like that...
Harley Quinn: (Seeing what it is) Oh great. Everybody get to cover!
(But before they can, the source of the bubbling emerges, revealing itself to be Swamp Thing.)
Swamp Thing: This Swamp is Protected!
Red Hood: Swamp Thing? I thought he died ages ago!
Swamp Thing: I am the Guardian of the Green. So long as plant life exists on this planet, I cannot die!
(With one swoop, Swamp Thing forces Harley Quinn, Red Hood, and Atom into a corner while Spyro leaps over the blow)
Spyro: From one swamp dweller to another, we are not your enemies.
Swamp Thing: Good, Bad, Human, Dragon, I care little for these distinctions. But I do care about when my swamp burns!
Spyro: I was afraid you'd say that.
(And now the battle begins, the two swamp residents duking it out. Swamp Thing may hold the home turf advantage, but Spyro is the stronger survivor, as he triumphs in the end)
Spyro: I hope this doesn't preclude a possibility of friendship.
(While these two battled, Red Hood, Harley Quinn, and the Atom started taking on what's left of Scarecrow's goons)
Spyro: Hear me, Guardian of the Green. We are not your enemies. It's Scarecrow and his soldiers you want. They have been mixing toxic gases in your protected swamp, we simply came to stop them.
(At this point, Swamp Thing finally sees what's going on)
Swamp Thing: It seems you are correct.
(And with that, Swamp Thing springs into action, taking out what's left of Scarecrow's goons, but not being able to stop Scarecrow himself from escaping on a swamp boat, though he does save the entire group from gunfire)
Swamp Thing: If they dare to return, I will be ready.
Harley Quinn: Swampy, you are amazing! You know, there's always a place on the team if you're interested.
Swamp Thing: Should our interests align, I will consider it. (Looking to Spyro) Especially after what this dragon has shown me. But for now, you must go. This swamp must heal.
Spyro: I trust we leave it in good hands.
Swamp Thing: Rest assured you do.
(And as Swamp Thing disappears back into the muck, the entire group looks to Spyro in some sort of awe)
Atom: You seem to have a natural rapport with Swamp Thing.
Swamp Thing: I guess that's a bonus for being raised in a swamp. But that's a story we'll have to tell another time.
Red Hood: If our fire's still burning, we've got plenty of time to tell it.
Harley Quinn: You're making me wish I brought marshmallows now.
Spyro: Let's just put that out and let Swamp Thing do his thing. I'll tell you on the flight back.)
(As the group leaves to break their observation camp, our scene ends for today)
And that looks like a good spot to end for now. Yes I know I didn't adapt the Joker fight from Chapter 2. But that's only because he was in Harley's Fear Toxin vision. It wouldn't make sense for Spyro to see Joker when hit with Fear Toxin. Seeing Malefor on the other hand makes so much more sense for that moment. I bet even to this day he still fears turning into him. But anyways, with Swamp Thing seemingly on their good side, the group makes their way back to Lex's headquarters. So what awaits when they return? Tune in next time to find out! Same time... same channel!
