the "surprise"

written December 19, 2020

Ryder called all the pups to the lookout for a meeting, much to their confusion.

"You wanted to talk to us, Ryder sir?" Chase asked as the pups arrived inside the tower.

"Now, pups, this isn't easy to tell you, but times are changing. It's harder to keep aging dogs like you from previous, simpler times maintained." Ryder spoke solemnly. All the pups seemed distraught.

"Have we not been doing a good job, Ryder sir?" The German shepherd stuttered. The boy pondered for a moment before answering.

"You know what, pups? It's fine. Forget I said anything. Me and Adventure Bay have been preparing a special...surprise for you all for being such splendid workers." Ryder stated as he ran back to get the "surprise".

The pups were ecstatic. The boy did not give surprises to the pups often anymore, since they were teenagers now.

"Really? Oh, what a wonder-tastic day!" Skye exclaimed with glee, a flip to follow. Ryder came back with their water bowls, filled with a special liquid.

"Is this our surprise, Ryder? You're lame, dude." Zuma sighed in disappointment. The boy laughed.

"This is only a fraction of the surprise. Drink up!" Ryder ordered. The pups did as they were told. Suddenly, they all felt dizzy and drowsy. Within 30 seconds, all of them fell unconscious. The boy smiled to himself.

When they all woke from their slumber, they were on the edge of a helicopter, overlooking a strange, red mass that was below a cliff they were above. They all felt uneasy, wondering if this was still part of the "surprise" that Ryder told them about.

"Uhh...Ryder...sir...I hate to pry, but this looks more like a giant mass of ravenous living tissue...than a special surprAAAAAHHH!"" Chase screamed. The pups all screamed as they suddenly fell to a net that had been held over the pit by some nails and ropes on both sides. All of them looked down in sheer terror as they stood, fragile above the flesh pit. They looked to Ryder with horrified expressions.

"Ryder, please let us go! We'll do anything!" Everest pleaded.

"Yeah, Ryder! We wanna live, man!" Rubble shouted.

Ryder looked at the pups with a blank expression. "Your surprise is early retirement, and subsequent absorption into the glorious mass."

The pups all looked down in fear as the mass made waves and sounds that made their fur stand up.

"You'll be happier this way. I think we all will." spoke Ryder, calmly. An evil, twisted grin grew on his face. The pups gazed at Ryder, a boy that they all loved, one last time with tears forming in their eyes. He betrayed them all with a push of a button. Suddenly, the net gave way. All the pups screamed as they descended into the cavernous mass, slowly consuming them.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Chase screamed as he jolted awake. He looked around him. He called everyone on his pup tag with urgency. "GUYS! I had the SCARIEST nightmare IN MY LIFE!" Chase shouted.

"OH MY GOD, ME TOO BRO!" Marshall replied.

"ME THREE." Rubble responded.

"ME FOUR!" Rocky answered.

"SO DID I!" Skye cried with fear.

"ME SIX, DUDE!" Zuma trembled.

"I HAD IT, TOO!" Everest stammered.

"WAIT. Was it with the flesh pit and Ryder betraying us?!" Chase pleaded.

"YEAH!" They all responded in panic. At that moment, Chase had enough. Even though it was 1 in the morning, he got out of his pup house. "OK...meet me at Ryder's bedroom door. We...gotta talk to him." Chase shivered as he spoke through his pup tag. They all agreed. Within minutes, they all gathered in the front of the bedroom door. Chase knocked. It was evident that this nightmare shook everyone up. Ryder woke up and groaned. He walked over to his door and turned on the light. He slowly opened it and looked down. There they were, 7 pups looking at him with a combination of fear and sadness. Tears were forming in their eyes. Ryder realized what was happening.

"What's wrong, pups? Everything ok?" The boy asked calmly. The pups couldn't take it anymore.

"W-w-we had this horrible nightmare. All of us did." Rocky spoke as he tried desperately to hold his tears back. Skye, Marshall, Rubble and Everest cried softly as Zuma, Rocky and Chase tried, but failed to keep tears from running down their fur. Ryder sat down and motioned them all to come closer.

"So… can someone tell me what it was like?" The boy spoke with concern.

"You...called us into the lookout for a surprise...and then you gave us this drink. We all fell asleep. When we woke up, we were in a helicopter. We...all fell down to a net that saved us from this...mass of living tissue. You told us that our surprise was early retirement, and that you would be happier this way. You had the most horrific...sadistic smile. You then pushed a button…the net gave way and we all fell into the mass, slowly consuming us." Rubble spoke as his voice cracked. Tears were still running hard on all the pups' faces.

"You wouldn't send us to a flesh pit to die...would you?" Everest trembled. Ryder was alarmed that all of his pups experienced this terrible nightmare this magnitude-and he was the cause of it.

"Oh my god, I would never do anything like that. I would never betray you guys like that. I love you too much." Ryder answered with worry.

"Promise, Ryder? We...don't wanna die like that." Skye whined. The boy felt terrible. They all hugged it out, Ryder not caring at all when their tears made his shirt wet.

"Is..it alright if we sleep up in your room tonight, dude?" Zuma asked. The boy smiled.

"Yep. Just bring your pup beds up here. Oh, and thanks for telling me. You guys are so wonderful, don't you know that?" Ryder spoke. They all grabbed their pup beds and walked upstairs, where they slept without fear. Their owner was with them.
