To quicksilver – Thanks for your review! I'm so glad you liked it! Updates are going to be spontaneous as I am pretty busy with work and life in general, but I'll try to not let too much time pass in between updates. Hope you like this chapter!
To vi – Thanks for your review! I'm so glad you liked it! Yes, you are correct that Dick's Mom is Romani not Romanian. I was under the impression that they were the same due to the similar name, but another commenter pointed it out to me and explained the difference, so I did go back and fix it. Thanks for also pointing that out. I hope you like this chapter!
AN – And I'm back! So, about two days after I posted the first chapter, I realized that I forgot about Conner, and feel really bad about it. Sorry Conner and to all Conner fans. Since this chapter takes place almost right after the first one, his absence will be explained here but he will show up in chapter 3. Also, about the character Lady Vic, has been casted for season 3, the assassin who apparently works for Roland Desmond, aka, Blockbuster, and I'm now TERRIFIED! They better not do the Tarantula storyline. My heart will not be able to take Dick going through that. It barely handled everything that happened in season 2. Though it does make me wonder if they are also getting ready to set up a Nightwing spinoff, along with a Red Hood one. That might be interesting. Anyways, hope you guys like this chapter!
Enjoy!
Two days after their talk with Barbara, the Titans found themselves at a fancy gala/fundraiser for cancer research. Specifically in children. Dick didn't actually want to go, but when Bruce mentioned it, the others thought it could be fun. The only person who sided with Dick was Rose. Well, Hank didn't think it would be all that fun, especially with the dress code, but he liked the idea of free food and alcohol. Dick however seemed ready to start a fight with Bruce to not go. He dropped it though when he realized he was outvoted. Rose on the other hand, got out of it due to her eyepatch. She did not want to spend an evening explaining that to rich snobs and Bruce agreed, even if Jericho was a little bummed about not going with their team.
It didn't take long for Rachel and Gar to become bored out of their minds. The people at the gala swarmed Bruce and Dick the second they arrived and haven't really left them alone since. It was a little crazy and disgusting. They both seemed to just go with it but the Titans could all tell Dick was uncomfortable with all the attention. That is, until Kory came to his side. With her right beside him, practically clinging to his arm, the other woman backed off on their obvious attempts to flirt with him. It was actually kind of entertaining even though Dick and Kory still weren't together. No one thought it would take long to happen though.
At the moment, Rachel sat next to Gar at their table while everyone mingled. The dinner portion had ended a while ago and very few people were dancing. In fact, it seemed like some of the guests were leaving. Dick and Kory were still socializing with people, Dawn and Hank were getting a drink and Bruce was dancing with someone they didn't know.
"I kind of wish Rose or Conner were here. They sure know how to make boring things fun." Gar said, running his finger around the rim of his crystal glass, trying to make that humming noise that annoyed the crap out of everyone.
"I think Rose would've killed someone. Jericho would be fun though. And I think Conner would've been eaten alive by those annoying teen girls." Rachel informed him, glancing at the preppy girls with manicured nails, over-priced styled hair and nose jobs gossiping in the far corner of the room. She could just picture them drooling over Conner's muscles and laughing at his innocent nature. However, he had gone to visit Superman right before they came to Gotham, sparing him of this unexpected torture.
"There's still some desserts left. Want to get one?" Gar asked.
"Sure, why not." Rachel answered with a shrug before getting up out of her seat as Gar did the same.
At the dessert table where eight different options of cakes and pies. While it was nice to have some variety, Rachel thought it was a bit unnecessary to have this many. Gar seemed to like all the options though. Then again, he liked all manner of junk food. If it was up to him, they'd eat nothing but takeout, pizza, chips and candy with the occasional smoothie. Honestly, she had no idea how he hadn't become fat even with all the training Dick made them do.
"This cake is almost as good as Larry's." Gar informed her with his mouth full. Before Rachel could respond, she heard a male voice behind her.
"It's a bit surprising Bruce brought so many random people here. As if it wasn't bad enough that he took in that gypsy circus freak, then that street rat, he now brings in strays to a proper gala. What is this world coming to?"
Her blood boiling to the point that she wouldn't be surprised if there was steam coming out of her ears, Rachel turned around and said, "Excuse me?"
The man behind her turned to look at her instead of the 30-something year old woman he had been talking to. He appeared to be in his 40's, dressed in a suit that had to cost more than her mom Melissa made in an entire year. He had brown hair that was starting to turn grey in some places and was clean shaven. He stared at Rachel and Gar with an unimpressed expression for a few seconds, then said, "It's incredibly rude to eavesdrop on other people's conversations. Hasn't anyone told you that?"
"You're criticizing me after everything you just said?" Rachel questioned with an incredulous tone of voice.
"I didn't say anything that wasn't true dear, not that you could understand." The man responded, now looking annoyed yet like he was pitying her at the same time.
"That you're a condescending, snobby a**hole?" Gar mumbled to himself, loud enough though that the man heard him.
"Excuse me?" He asked, glaring at the green-haired teenager.
A fake apologetic look came over Gar's face as he sarcastically said, "Oh, I'm sorry. Didn't mean for you to hear that, but then again, you shouldn't eavesdrop."
The man's face turned beet red in rage but before he could respond, another voice joined the conversation, asking, "Is everything okay over here?"
Bruce Wayne was suddenly at Rachel's side, giving her and Gar a concerned look before turning his gaze back to the man and the woman who had been staying completely silent. The man who insulted them, specifically Dick and Jason, immediately smiled and said, "Everything's just fine Bruce. We were just talking."
"Yeah, talking about people saying things that are incredibly rude and insulting." Rachel muttered, glaring at the man.
He bristled slightly, then turned his full attention to Bruce. "It was wonderful to see you again Bruce. Unfortunately, me and the wife have to get going. We have an early morning tomorrow."
"You both have a good night Kenneth." Bruce replied with a smile.
The second the man, Kenneth, and his wife were gone though, Bruce dropped the grin and quietly asked, "What happened?"
"Gar and I came to get some dessert and overheard him saying he couldn't believe you brought 'random strays' here and that it was bad enough that you took in a 'street rat' and a 'gypsy circus freak'." Rachel filled him in, feeling disgusted she was saying the words even if she was just telling Bruce what had occurred.
Bruce completely tensed up at her words. His hands curled into fists so tight that his knuckles turned white and his jaw clenched to the point the teenagers thought he was going to crack his teeth. Despite hearing tales of Batman's wrath, neither Rachel nor Gar had seen it before. And they most definitely didn't think they'd see it when he was Bruce Wayne, yet there it was. So simple, obvious but subtle at the same time and so silent. It was actually a little scary and would no doubt be downright terrifying if he was in his Batman suit.
"It's getting late and we all have a busy night ahead of us. Let's get going." Bruce told them, his voice quiet so no one else would hear. Rachel and Gar nodded and followed him to the others, wondering if Bruce was going to do anything about Kenneth of if he was just going to let it go. He'd probably leave it alone. It's not like there was anything he could do about it now, right?
2018TITANS2018
The next day, the Titans sat on a private plane on their way back to San Francisco. They had managed to close up the case that had brought them to Gotham last night and were ready to head home. They had considered staying another night for fun, but Dick reminded them that Gar and Rachel had to get back to school while Rose/Jericho and some homeschooling to get to as well. However, they did agree that they could go back for a fun visit another time. They even got Dick to relent on possibly going out on patrol if all the psychos were in Arkham. He still did not want Rachel, Gar, Rose/Jericho or Conner anywhere near criminals like the Joker despite their powers.
"Dick, what's wrong?" Kory suddenly asked, noticing Dick frowning at his cell phone screen. Hearing the questioned, everyone looked over at their leader.
"Nothing just, Gotham News just reported that this guy that Bruce used to do business with sometimes, Kenneth Harding, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of tax evasion and fraud. Not surprising, but crimes like that aren't usually found out, or become news worthy events." Dick answered, giving them a slight shrug.
Recognizing the name, Rachel and Gar both looked over at Dick's phone to see a picture of the man from the gala in handcuffs being led to a police car. The black-and-blue-haired girl turned her gaze to the green-haired boy. Though they didn't say anything, they were fully aware what the other person was thinking. Was Bruce behind Kenneth's sudden arrest as a form of payback for his words against his sons? Did they cause this or was it all a coincidence?
Seeing two of his troublemakers exchanging curious looks, Dick questioned, "What's up with you two?"
"Nothing." Gar immediately responded with a guilty tone.
"Gar." Kory said threateningly.
"Well, Rach and I might have bumped into that guy at the gala last night." Gar reluctantly revealed, surprising everyone. Except for Rachel of course.
"You did?" Dawn questioned.
"Yeah, and we kind of heard him say some not-so-nice things about Dick and Jason. And we kind of told Bruce about it." Rachel then admitted, knowing that they'd get the explanation out of her or Gar in one way or another.
"What did he say?" Rose wondered, Jericho also curious. Everyone else seemed to want to know as well, especially Dick.
"Nothing worth repeating, but he deserved it." Rachel informed him before Gar added, "And besides, if that guy didn't commit those crimes, he wouldn't be in trouble anyways. It's his own fault."
Dick stared at the two kids who had attended the gala. It wasn't the first time that the rich men and women, or their kids had insulted him. Whether it was behind his back or straight to his face. When Bruce found out about it, he found ways to make those people pay somehow for their hurtful words. It didn't take long for others in their circle to realize what was going on and learn to keep those thoughts to themselves. It had actually been a few years since it happened but it was still nice to know that Bruce was still as protective as before, as were his teammates apparently.
Giving the kids a smile, Dick said, "Fair enough. Now get back into your seats, we're going to be landing soon," and let the matter drop. Gar was right. Whether or not it was actually Bruce who tipped the authorities off as a form of payback or if it was just coincidence, it was Kenneth's own fault. If he had been a good, law-abiding citizen, he wouldn't be in this mess. And, if it was due to Batman's help that got him caught, well that was his own fault too. He got himself on his bad side, and everyone knows Batman doesn't like criminals, especially ones who somehow hurt the people he cares about.
AN – Quick question, how interested would you all be if I did a sequel to Prince of Gotham, revolving around the Court of Owls? I have kind of been toying around with the idea, but I am currently working on a different Batman fic, another Titans fic and trying to finish Falling Skies fic that I started years ago and haven't finished so I haven't really put much thought or attention on it. If you guys are interested, let me know and I will see if I feel up to it and have time to write it. Hope you guys liked this chapter! See you all next time!
