In Zack's bedroom
Zack finished setting up the room for his night with Lisa. Snacks and drinks sat beside the bean bag chairs, movie boxes were arranged on the floor, and the sweet scent of lit candles filled the room and set the atmosphere.
Zack was ready to cuddle right next to Lisa while watching comedy flicks.
As Zack observed his proud work, the phone rang.
It was Lisa calling.
"Hello?" Zack answered.
"Zack, it's me Lisa. I'm calling because I just want to let you know that I cannot make it tonight."
By the sound of that, Zack's heart dropped a bit.
"I didn't realize I had a shift at the hospital tonight," Lisa explained.
"But don't you work on Mondays, Tuesdays, and sometimes Fridays from 4-7?"
"I do, but the group who are supposed to be here today, most of them didn't show up for whatever reason, and the hospital needs all the help it can get especially it being a very busy night," Lisa concluded.
"I'm really sorry," she apologized.
"No, it's ok. Stuff happens, I get it." Zack tried to mask his disappointment.
"How about we do it again tomorrow? Same place, same time," the blonde asked, hopefully.
"Ooh, I'm sorry. I'm sleeping over Kelly's tomorrow along with Jessie."
"You can't sleep over here?" he lightly jokes.
"No, Zack. We have been planning this for a couple of days now and plus, I would like to spend time with the girlies," she replied.
Zack took all of that in and let out a deep sigh. "Alright, how about Friday and you can't say no this time because I know you have nothing planned," he playfully spoke.
On the other end of the line, there was silence. Lisa finally spoke saying, "Oh, well, uh...I cant Friday. Why don't we do this another time!" she spoke with fake enthusiasm.
Zack can hear right through her voice as she said those things.
"Yeah, yeah. Maybe some other time...goodnight," he said in a soft, low tone before hanging up.
Zack let out another deep sigh as he saw his work be all for nothing.
He rested on his bed, reflecting on the last thing Lisa had said to him. In all honesty, he felt slighted and even a bit bothered by Lisa's last excuse, but he decided to not dwell on it and go to sleep.
The next day at school
The girls were at Jessie's locker discussing the sleepover.
"I'm so excited for you two to come over tonight!" Kelly beamed.
The girls nodded their heads and smiled in agreement.
"We haven't had a sleepover since...two summers ago," Jessie added.
"I'm glad that we are doing this. Zack tried to push our date from yesterday to today because I was working, but I refused because I wanted to hang out with you both." A smiling Lisa placed both arms around her friends.
"Wait Lisa, we can push back the sleepover for another time so that you can go on your date," Kelly acknowledged.
Lisa was stunned to hear what Kelly was saying and removed her arms from around both her friends.
"I have no problem with doing that-in fact I encourage you and Zack to spend time with each other now that you two are a thing." Kelly smiles, delightfully.
"She's right. Why don't you two love birds go have fun tonight," Jessie added on with a playful smile.
Lisa felt a bit uncomfortable by what her friends were saying. She didn't want Kelly to cancel the night and deep inside, she also didn't want to spend time alone with Zack.
So while Kelly and Jessie were chatting about a romantic date between them and gushing about how cute they are, Lisa spoke up.
"Kelly, you cant cancel tonight's sleepover," Lisa Stressed.
"But why? Don't you want to go on that date with your boyfriend." A perplexed smile formed on the brunette's face.
"I know that I would take that chance to spend time with mine," Jessie commented before chuckling.
Lisa shook her head, "It's because...we planned for this sleepover to happen tonight."
"Lisa, really, it's no big deal, we can do it tomorrow-"
"NO!" Lisa quickly shouted. "I mean...no. We have to do it tonight...ok?" Lisa attempted to confirm.
"O-k." Kelly and Jessie gave each other weird looks but soon brushed it aside.
The boys come along, arguing about nonsense.
"Hi girls," Slater charmingly greets.
"Hi Slater, what are you three arguing about?" Kelly asks, interested.
"Slater thinks he's taller than me." Zack chuckles while making his way to Lisa, placing an arm around her.
Lisa jumps a bit, caught by surprise as he did that, and he pulls her closer to his body.
"But yall do agree that I'm taller than Zack?" Slater asks in defense.
"Nope, your the fourth tallest one in our group right behind Zack." Jessie tauntingly snickers.
"Thank you, that's what I've been trying to tell him," Zack says.
"Yeah, whatever."
Zack turns to Lisa, "So Lisa, I know you are quite busy this week but how about we go to the movie next Monday or Tuesday?" Zack's eyes lit up with hope.
"Uh...I can't," Lisa spoke, feeling slightly awkward as she quickly glanced up at him then away. Zack observes her, trying to capture the truth in her eyes before Kelly spoke out.
"I told her it was alright for you to have her tonight but she refused."
Lisa's eyes darted at Kelly in a way saying, 'Why would you say that,' kind of way.
Zack's eyes landed on Lisa and he was confused and slightly hurt.
"Why would you refuse?" He asked her, calmly.
All eyes were on her. She didn't like or appreciate any of that kind of attention.
Removing Zack's arm from around her, "I told you we can go out another time. Tonight, I just want to spend it with the girls, is that fine?" She calmly answered back.
Zack nodded his head while his eyes were steady on hers, "Yeah...that's fine," he lied through his teeth.
Lisa half smiled then walked away leaving not only Zack lost but the rest of the gang also.
Zack definitely felt bothered by Lisa's response and action. He feels and notices that she is shying away from him but he doesn't know the reason behind it. The first couple of days of their relationship was great but now, it seems like it's coming to a dead-end, and Zack wants to fix it before it does.
As school was over, Zack asked Lisa if she would want to go to The Max to grab a burger and a shake, and she agreed.
The Max
Zack and Lisa were sitting on the same side of the booth at their usual table. Surprisingly, despite their little dispute early in the morning, the pair were laughing and joking around.
Zack was secretly trying to take Lisa's french fries and every time she caught him, she would playfully swat at him.
The two were practically cackling over something little as French fries but they were having a good time while also holding a decent amount of conversation with each other.
Lisa was getting her final chuckles out and looked down at her fries. A soft, irresistible smile played on her face which drew Zack's attention to her soft, girly features. He couldn't help but touch her fluffy brown curls that went past her shoulders. Lisa looked at him, a bit caught off guard as he ran his hand through her hair taking full admiration of it and her.
Finally meeting her beautiful brown eyes, "Have you realized that we haven't kissed since your fashion show," he randomly mentioned.
Lisa's eyebrows scrunched up as she shook her head, "That's not true. We kissed when we went on our first date."
"Yeah, but that was more of a goodnight kiss. I mean really kiss like we did in there." Zack pointed to the storage room where they shared a deep, passionate kiss. Zack smiled at the memory of it while Lisa stayed quiet, silently biting her lip.
Zack's eyes laid on her once again but this time, he brought his hand up to her face, turning it towards him, and then leaned in, and as he got closer to her face, Lisa tilted back a bit.
"I don't think we should do this here."
Zack's eyes opened, feeling confused and rejected.
"Why?" he asked, searching her eyes.
Lisa looked around her surroundings before looking back at Zack.
"We are in a public place," she said as an excuse.
"Ok, then why don't we go somewhere else...where we could be alone," Zack suggested along with a sweet but cheeky smile.
"No." The brown-eyed girl looked away.
"Lisa." Zack touched her shoulder but she pulled away from him.
Lisa's behavior was the final straw for Zack. He has been more than patient, more than understanding with her but all she does is push him away like he did something wrong. He was tired of feeling slighted by his girlfriend.
"What is wrong with you. I'm trying to be affectionate with you-trying to be intimate but all you are doing is pushing me away like I'm Screech or something. Like I don't understand, why are you doing this?" Zack raised his voice in frustration.
"What are you talking about? I'm not doing anything-"
"No, no you have. You have been shying away from me for the past couple of days. I try to spend time with you, you create an excuse. I try to hug you, and you easily pull away-we haven't even kissed since your fashion show! Like where the heck are we because it seems you are treating me more like your friend than your boyfriend."
"That's not true." Lisa kept her voice low while avoiding his heated eyes.
"No, it is true, Lisa. I'm tired of feeling like I'm the only one doing the work in this relationship," Zack's voice dropped in a dejected tone.
"Well, I'm trying."
"No your not, it's like you don't want to be with me-"
"I just don't want to kiss you, ok!" Lisa shouted. She didn't mean for it to come out like that.
When Zack heard those words, he felt as if a nasty blow just hit him. He was hurt by Lisa's words. He was hurt that his very own girlfriend doesn't want to even kiss him.
"I think we rushed into this-"
"Zack, I'm-"
"No!" Zack stood up and out of the booth.
"If you wanna break up then fine, let's break up."
"Zack." Lisa lifted up.
"I'm done with this," and from there, he left a guilty and sad Lisa standing by herself.
