Chapter 18

"Come on Lis I just want to relax."

Ignoring my complaining she shoves the laptop in my face again "You have got to pick a nursery theme. You can't put it off forever."

"Fine." I take the laptop and scroll

A smile spreads across my face as I show Lissa the screen. "Dimtri will go crazy."

Nodding she adds several items to the cart "Its perfect he'll love it."

"Don't tell him I want it to be a surprise."

Nodding she finishes the final purchase and closes the laptop. "How are you doing, Rose? Are you feeling any better?

Leaning back in the chair I sigh constantly, "Yes, it feels so good to be out here to not have to watch my every move you know?"

"Its easier being back than I thought it would be." she whispers as if talking more to herself than me. "I just keep seeing all the happiness and now with a baby coming I can't wait to see it filled with more memories."

"I know how you feel I-" my thought is interrupted by a small twinge in my stomach. "The baby kicked!" I yell giggling with excitement, Lissa places her hand over mine and feels the same thump against her hand.

"That's amazing!"

"I'm going to find Dimitri." Careful not to slip on the wet pool tiles I run inside and down the hall calling for Dimitri.

A very frantic looking Russian almost falls sliding down the halls followed by a ridiculously dressed Turkish man. "Rose, what's wrong?"

"The baby kicked." I jerk his hand toward my stomach meeting his eyes as the baby kicks against his fathers hand.

His eyes reflect the same eagerness and love as me " Roza, that's our son."

"Kiz you almost gave us both a heart attack." Abe scowls leaning against the wall.

"Sorry Baba, at least I know you can move fast."

With that both him and Dimtri burst into laughter "The next few months are going to be an adventure.

4 Months Later Rose is 8 months along

(the following is an adaptation of the library scene written by Michelle Read as written in Last Sacrifice she owns this piece minus the small changes made for the story line )

"Please I need to get out of this house, Dimitri I'm going crazy."

Dimtri takes my hand pulling me up " Come with me Roza."

I let him pull me up, stumbling and grabbing my huge stomach with my free hand. "Where are we going comrade?"

He squeezes my hand and smiles back at me but doesn't say anything. Damn that smile, I love that smile, if I wasn't so frustrated with his stupid silence, I would drag his fine ass to the bedroom and lock the door. These freaking hormones have me on fire. I'm so caught up in my thoughts I almost don't notice him stop and pull me into the room. "The Library? Why are we in the library, comrade? I've read every baby book here and then some."

Still not saying a word he pulls a book of the self, the spine reads "One Hundred of the Best places to Visit in the World." before sitting next to me on the window seat. "Close your eyes and open it."

We stare at each challenging the other. After a few minutes I relent and take the book with a sigh earning myself a smirk from Dimtri. "Open it up without thinking, just open it to a random page."

I raise my eyebrows or well I try "What kind of weird zen lesson are you trying to teach me?"

A warm laugh echoes through the room "Oh, Roza not everything is a zen lesson just open the book."

"Fine." I open the book with a show of attitude " South Dakota."

"Well, what does it say?" he laughs pointing to the text beneath.

"It says it is home to the Corn Palace "Built in 1892 in Mitchell, South Dakota, the Corn Palace was created to dramatically display the products of the harvest of South Dakota's farmers, in murals on the outside of the building. The murals are made from thousands of bushels of corn and other grains and grasses such as wild oats, rye, straw, and wheat." (quote from .gov/es/sd/es_sd_corn_ #:~:text=Built%20in%201892%20in%20Mitchell,rye%2C%20straw%2C%20and%20wheat. )

"Sounds like it's right up your alley cowboy." winking, I nudge Dimitri with a giggle. "Look, it even has a rodeo." The image of Dimitri riding a horse with a cowboy hat and spurs sends me into a laughing fit.

"What's so funny?" questions confusion clearly written on his face.

"You- in " I gasp between laughs " cowboy hat- spurs!"

Dimtri's perplexed look only throws me into a deeper laughter. "You know Milaya, I think you've lost it ." I might be but by the end of his sentence he's laughing with both of our eyes watering until we have no choice but to stop and catch our breath.

"No, absolutely not." the growl in Dimitris' voice evidence he is not a fan of this idea. "There's absolutely no reason to trust her."

"I don't like her anymore than you do, but she is my mother and one of the most renowned guardians out there, maybe she can figure out who the hell is doing this to our family." Don't get me wrong I don't like my mother at all, and she's never really been there, but she honestly seems to have turned a new leaf. Maybe it's just wishful thinking but she says she regrets not being a mom and she doesn't want to miss being a grandma. She even apologized for what happened the last time she saw me.

"How did she even find us in the first place?" He runs his hands through his thick hair sighing deeply.

"She doesn't know where we are, she only sent a message to Abe."

"Abe, what does he think?" Dimitri's voice is worn like old shoe leather.

"He thinks if I decide to meet her I should do it somewhere besides Italy to make sure if things don't work out she doesn't know where I am."

A sour laugh escapes " He has a lot of faith in her doesn't he?" his eyes still undeniably weary he faces me taking my hands in his "If you want this, then I'm here and I'll be there when you go to meet her."

"I'm giving her one more chance, I guess."

"I love you Milaya, I'll be with you every step of the way."

"I love you too comrade."
