Wilhuff Tarkin wiped the dirt from the little square glass of the hatch.
"You want my opinion?" Asked Jaime Lannister.
Tarkin looked at the man, knowing what he was going to say. They had been trying to open the hatch for days but nothing seemed to work. Tarkin was curious to what was in the hatch."We just need to keep going. All we've got to do is break the glass and then we're in. The trebuchet delivers a half a ton of force."
They had spent such a long time building the trebuchet but they were now done making.
"You're a very interesting man, Tarkin." Jaime said."You remind me of my father...only he wouldn't be building this himself. So, who are you?"
Tarkin smiled."I am Grand Moff for the Empire, Jaime." Tarkin said. But he remembered how his Uncle Jova had taught him how to build a trebuchet.
They then prepared to use the trebuchet on the hatch."3, 2, 1." Tarkin counted. He then released the arm. It fell onto the hatch but there was no damage. The trebuchet then broke.
Tarkin clenched his fist in anger."This was supposed to work." He said angrily, looking at the pieces of the broken trebuchet."This was supposed to work!"
"Tarkin," Jaime said, looking at him in surprise."Your leg..."
The Grand Moff looked down to see a piece of metal out of his right leg. It must have hit him when the trebuchet fell. And yet...he felt no pain at all. Tarkin was confused.
"Are you okay?" Jaime asked him.
"Yeah. I'm fine." He nodded.
When it became night, Tarkin started a fire in the jungle. He looked at his injured leg and thought of something. He grabbed a sharp stick and stabbed his hand, not too much that it would bleed.
He felt nothing.
Tarkin was shocked. There was no pain at all. He then grabbed a stick from the fire and took off his shoe. He put the burning stick under there.
Again, he felt nothing.
Tarkin and Jaime were using an ax to chop some wood to build another trebuchet."The trebuchet...why didn't it work?" Jaime asked him.
"It didn't work because it wasn't strong enough," Tarkin answered.
"I don't think that glass is going to break. Whatever it's made out of-"
"Everything breaks if you apply the right force."
"So, we're just going to build another one of your inventions and hope it works this time?"
Tarkin nodded."That's right."
"What if it doesn't?" Jaime questioned.
"Then the Island will tell us what to do," Tarkin whispered.
"What?" Jaime asked, looking at him.
"I should get back there. Salvage those pieces." Tarkin was about to leave.
Jaime looked at his leg."Is your leg okay?"
"It's fine," Tarkin said before he left.
The next day, Tarkin was waiting for Jaime at the hatch. He finally saw him."Your late." Tarkin said.
"Late for what?" Jaime questioned.
"Late for work."
"I think I'm done working, Tarkin." He said.
The Grand Moff looked at him."Excuse me?"
"It's useless," Jaime said."You can't open that thing up. You say you can but you can't."
"No, don't tell me what I can't do," Tarkin said.
Jaime shook his head."Don't you get it?" The Knight said."It's a dead end. You're not getting in."
Tarkin tried to calm himself."That's impossible. We didn't find this by accident. We're supposed to-"
"Oh, we're supposed." Jaime interrupted."We're supposed to find this, right? We're supposed to open it, right? Then tell me something, Tarkin. If we're supposed to open it, then why the hell haven't we opened it yet?"
"The Island will send us a sign." Tarkin was surprised that he said that. It sounded like something the Jedi would say.
The Force will send us a sign, He imagined Obi-Wan Kenobi saying that.
"The Island will send us a sign," Jaime said sarcastically.
"All that's happening now is our faith is being tested. Our commitment! But we will open it! The Island will show us how!"
"What kind of sign will the Island send us?" Jaime questioned.
Before Tarkin could say anything, he heard a loud noise. Tarkin was shocked to see a Republic Gunship, also known as a LAAT, look like it was going to crash.
"Did you see that?" Tarkin asked Jaime, pointing at the gunship but it was now gone."Jaime?"
Tarkin saw Jaime with blood all over him. He was looking at the sky."Burn them all." He said."Burn them all. Burn them all."
"Sir!" Tarkin looked to see someone he knew. It was Moradmin Bast, an Imperial officer who had been on the Death Star."We've analyzed their attack, sir, and there is a danger. Should I have your ship standing by?"
He was confused as to why he was here.
Tarkin suddenly saw an X-Wing fly to him. The X-Wing then shot a proton torpedo at the hatch. It exploded.
Tarkin then opened his eyes and slowly realized it was a dream.
Jaime Lannister felt someone nudge him as he slept.
"Jaime, wake up." Said a familiar voice.
"Huh?" He said, tiredly. He was looking at Tarkin."What time is it?"
"It's morning." Tarkin whispered."Come on."
"Okay, okay. I'm up. What is going on?"
"Let's go." Was all Tarkin said.
Flashback.
Wilhuff Tarkin drove his speeder to his uncle's cabin on Eriadu. His Uncle Jova was sitting on the front porch, drinking some Corellian whiskey. It had been a few months since Berch Teller's rebels had been killed and Tarkin became a Grand Moff. It had also been a few weeks since Tarkin had hunted Darth Vader on Chandar's Folly.
"Hello, uncle." Tarkin smiled.
"Wilhuff. How's the Empire going?" Jova asked.
"It's going. I just wanted to visit you since it will be a while before I see anyone." Tarkin said, getting off the speeder.
"Why's that?" Jova raised an eyebrow.
"The Emperor is having me focus on one of his projects more."
"I see," Jova said.
"I heard you're leaving Eriadu soon." Tarkin said to his uncle."Why's that?"
"I'm just going on a little vacation. That's all." Jova said.
On the Island.
Tarkin and Jaime walked over to the hatch."I had a dream last night. I asked for a sign and then I saw a Republic Gunship crash right out there." Tarkin pointed but Jaime was confused by what he meant."It was a dream, but it was the most real thing I've ever experienced. I know where to go now."
"Go for what?"
"To find what we need to open the hatch," Tarkin said.
"Tarkin, have you been using that paste stuff?" Jaime questioned, skeptical.
He shook his head."No, no."
"Are you sure?"
The Grand Moff stared at the knight for a moment."What does 'burn them all' mean?" Tarkin asked.
Jaime looked at him, surprised."What?"
"Burn them all. Burn them all. You were saying that in the dream." Tarkin said.
"How would you know about that?" Jaime asked.
"I don't know, Jaime," Tarkin admitted."But we're supposed to go to this place. We're supposed to find that gunship. Will you come with me?"
Jaime stood there for a long time before he nodded.
Tarkin and Jaime walked through the jungle.
"I could have said that by the hatch one day," Jaime said to Tarkin.
The Grand Moff looked at him."What?"
"Burn them all. Maybe I was talking to myself."
"Maybe. But you didn't." Tarkin said.
"So...what is a Republic Gunship?" Jaime asked.
"It was a ship that carried Clone Troopers and Jedi during the Clone Wars," Tarkin explained. He had been on one on the Mission to Murkhana with Darth Vader.
"Clone Troopers? Clone Wars?" Jaime asked, more confused. Tarkin fell before he could tell him what that all meant."Are you okay?" Jaime went over to help him.
"I'm fine!" He yelled, not wanting his help.
"What is wrong with your leg?" Jaime asked.
"I'm fine." He said. As he stood up, he saw something. He saw a DC-17m Interchangeable blaster rifle.
"What?" Jaime asked and looked at what he was seeing. Tarkin grabbed the weapon."What is that?"
"A blaster rifle." Tarkin said, surprised to see this here.
"A blaster what?" Jaime asked."Where did this come from?"
Tarkin looked up at a tree and saw something. He pulled on a vine and something fell down.
It was the body of a Clone Commando."Him." Tarkin said.
The Clone Commando's dirty armor had green paint that nearly peeled off.
"W-what is this?"
"A Clone Commando. They were Clone Troopers who went on missions for the Republic." Tarkin explained.
Jaime wanted to ask him about all this Republic and that but a better question came to him"How long do you think he's been dead?"
Tarkin took off the Commando's helmet to see the rotting face of a clone."I don't know."
"How did he get here?" Jaime asked.
"The gunship." Tarkin answered.
"So...you can fly?" Stuhlinger asked Ocellus. Stuhlinger, Ocellus, Vanto, Zuud, and Luna were at the caves, talking about this.
"I guess I can." The Changeling said, remembering how she was able to fly after the bridge broke.
"Maybe we can use this to our advantage." Said Zuud."We can use Ocellus to fly over the Island and try to find the Others-"
"We can't do that!" Luna argued."Ocellus is too young! And the Others could do something to hurt her! We can not let her go."
"Thank you, Princess Luna." Ocellus said, smiling. She was too shy to argue but was glad she would not have to be spying. It reminded her of how the Changelings used to do that when Queen Chrysalis was the ruler.
But Ocellus did wonder why she was the only one to fly...and why Luna had seen a Changeling skeleton earlier.
Tarkin struggled to walk through the jungle."What's going on, Tarkin?" Jaime asked.
"Nothing." He said.
"You can barely walk. Your almost a cripple." Jaime said. It then made him think of his hand that had been cut off. It also reminded him of how he had crippled Bran Stark.
"It's the wound from the shrapnel," Tarkin said.
"That's your right leg." Jaime noticed Tarkin struggling to walk on his left."What's wrong with your left?"
"I'm fine. Now stop asking me." He said, annoyed. He then fell over.
"That's it." Jaime said as he went to help him."Let's go back."
"I'm fine," Tarkin said again.
"No, you're not! Let me get you back to that pony...uh, Nurse Redheart."
Tarkin scoffed."Redheart wouldn't know the first thing about what's wrong with me." Tarkin tried to get up only to fall again.
"Tarkin, we've got to-"
The Grand Moff quickly shook his head."No, no." He said, trying to get back up.
"What is wrong with you? Are you crazy?" Jaime questioned.
"I died," Tarkin said.
"What?"
"I died on the Death Star. But then I woke up on the Island...my body shouldn't even be here." Tarkin said to him.
"I-I don't understand," Jaime said, confused.
"I know it's hard for you to understand...your world probably isn't a part of my galaxy...but what I'm saying is true. You and I are here for a reason. There's something that we were meant to find. Something that's going to help us get into the hatch. I know it. But we've got to keep going."
Jaime was reluctant but he knew he couldn't convince Tarkin to go back."Okay. Can you move your legs?"
Tarkin surprisingly smiled."Just help me up."
Nearly 20 minutes later, Jaime helped Tarkin walk. Jaime was getting tired. He let go of Tarkin and rested. Tarkin fell.
"I was in the Kingsguard for King Aerys Targaryen the second." Jaime said. Tarkin looked at him."They called him the Mad King...he did terrible, terrible things to people. When Robert's Rebellion was coming to an end, he ordered some of his men to burn down King's Landing. I killed him before that could happen. His last words were 'Burn them all'."
Tarkin stared at him for a long moment before he laughed.
Jaime's eyes widened in anger."What's so funny?"
Tarkin pointed as he laughed."Look." He said, pointing up. Jaime looked to see a Republic Gunship stuck on top of a cliff.
"By the gods...is that the...thing you saw?" Jaime asked, not knowing what it was.
"It is." Tarkin nodded.
"You really saw it?"
"I really saw it."
"How long do you think it's been here?" Jaime asked.
"It doesn't matter. What's important is that we found it. What's important is what's inside it." Tarkin said.
"What is inside of it?"
"You're going to have to climb up there for us and find out."
Flashback.
"Tarkin," Said Emperor Palpatine, wearing his black robes. Tarkin was on Coruscant and was in the Emperor's throne room."There has been a new Warlord out in the Outer Rim."
The Grand Moff looked surprised."Who is this warlord, my Emperor?"
"We only know so little about him. All we know is that he is a member of the Hidden Hand and that his name is...Jova."
On the Island.
Tarkin was impressed that a man with only one hand was able to climb up there. Jaime nearly slipped."Hang on!" Tarkin yelled.
Jaime quickly climbed up there and got inside the gunship's door. The gunship tilted over the side of the cliff. Jaime fell and a Clone Commando's body fell on him. Jaime yelled in shock. He pushed the Clone Commando's and saw that it had some yellow paint on him.
"Jaime?!" Tarkin yelled."Jaime?!"
"I'm fine!" Jaime yelled. He then noticed another Clone Commando's body that had orange paint on it. Jaime looked around for something important and found a device.
Jaime pressed something on the little device. He had no idea he was watching a recording.
"All Republic forces: Establish forward command Kachirho." Jaime was staring at a little creature that was seen from the blue hologram."Rendezvous with Delta Squad, we must. Upon them, we rest much hope. Wookiee freedom must not be sacrificed."
The recording then ended. Jaime stared at nothing for a moment, confused by what he had seen and heard.
"Jaime, what do you see?!" Tarkin yelled, wishing he could be there."Jaime?!"
"There's nothing useful in here!" Jaime yelled. Suddenly, the knight heard a noise. For a moment, he thought it was from the little device but then he heard it near the front of the gunship.
As he went over, the gunship nearly fell over the cliff but stopped.
"Jaime! Jaime, get out!" Tarkin yelled.
The Lannister then heard a voice."Hello. Hello. Is anybody here?"
"Jaime, there's no time! Get out now!" Tarkin wondered what Jaime was doing up there.
"Is there anybody here?"
Jaime pressed a button, hoping he could somehow talk to whoever this was."Uh...hello? Can you hear me?"
"Repeat that transmission." Said a male voice.
"Hello...we're stuck on an Island," Jaime said, wondering what was going on.
"Wait...who are you?" Said the male voice.
"Jaime!" Tarkin yelled again."Get out now!"
The Republic gunship then fell over and hit the ground with Jaime still in there. Tarkin got up, ignoring the pain, and went to help Jaime. He carried him.
"Redheart! Help!" Tarkin yelled as he carried Jaime's body to the caves.
Everybody looked at him, surprised. Redheart quickly walked over and help put Jaime down."What happened?" She asked the Grand Moff.
"There was an accident. Jaime fell off a cliff out near the place we were hunting." Tarkin explained.
Redheart looked at Jaime's wound. It was very big. Redheart looked at Princess Luna."Okay, I'm going to need some water, shirts, towels, anything that I can use to staunch the bleeding."
Princess Luna stared at Jaime's wound. It reminded her of Soap's wound.
"Princess! Now!" Redheart yelled. She didn't want to yell at the princess but Jaime was dying.
Luna quickly left. Redheart turned to look at Tarkin...only to see him gone.
Flashback.
Grand Moff Tarkin looked at the pirate starships. He was in the bridge of one of the Star-Destroyers, looking at the battle.
They had already destroyed eight ships and there were only four left."Sir," Said an Imperial Officer."The leader of the pirates is contacting us."
"I assume they want to surrender." Tarkin said."Put a secure channel in my room. I'll answer it in there."
Tarkin went into his room and answered the message. The hologram came on and he was looking at Jova Tarkin.
"Hello, Wilhuff." Jova smiled as Tarkin was shocked by this. He didn't know that his uncle was leading these pirates.
"Jova...wh-what are you doing here?"
His uncle stared at him for a long moment."I'm getting old, Tarkin. So, I thought I might as well plunder and destroy worlds on the Outer Rim before I die!" He smiled."I can't to you for too long now. I got to get back to the Hidden Hand. But I'll see you around, Wilhuff." The hologram was then gone.
"Sir!" An Imperial Officer came into the room."The rest of the pirate's ships are gone! They escaped in hyperspace!" He said.
Tarkin just stood there, processing all of this.
On the Island.
Tarkin returned to the hatch, looking at the glass. He banged his hand at the hatch.
"I listened to you!" Tarkin yelled angrily."I was loyal to you as I was loyal to Palpatine! I've done everything you wanted me to do, so why did you do this to me?!"
Tarkin cried, knowing that it was hopeless. He could not open the hatch.
Suddenly, a bright light came through the little glass window.
