AN: So every chapter is named after a certain song. Most of the time lyrics matches what the chapter is about.
Also, every chapter starts with a quote. Like a song, the quote also tells what the chapter is about.

"Trust that what you're going through now is destined to bring you a brighter future. Trust that the hard choices you have to align with who you are and who you want to become. Trust that your decisions and actions will only bring you closer to your purpose. It may be hard to believe that life has so much to offer you right now, but believing in yourself, your potential, is your greatest achievement."
After Andy ran away he didn't know what to do. Should he go after her or wait. Should he call, text or say anything at that moment. It was hurting him that she found out this way. He wanted to make it right. To explain to her but he guessed because he waited for so long to tell her this is universe revenge. Everything was against him. He desperately wanted to open his heart. To make himself vulnerable in front of her. To tell her what he really feel and stop dancing around when it's obvious how he feels about her.
Andy on the other hand was driving who knows where. She kept repeating in her head why she reacted the way she did. He is just a friend. But in reality just like Robert she wouldn't admit her true feelings to herself. After some time she stopped and of course she find herself at the beach. She needed to clear her head and to get enough courage to open her heart to him. To tell him why and to explain everything.
Next shift was far enough for her to prepare herself and to think what she will say. Robert also decided not to text her because he figure she needed some space so he decided to wait until next shift when she is back.
Even far away from each other, the same thing was on their minds. One another. Always thinking about each other.
Next shift was getting closer and both of them were getting more nervous. Andy wasn't mad at him. She just reacted in the moment. They spent some time together while she was recovering.
Andy got up early and got to the station 30 minutes before everyone else. She went to her office, sat behind the desk and just took a deep. She was back. Can't say stronger than ever but healed.
"So what do you want to do today?" Robert asked as he entered Andy's apartment not realizing she was in shorts and sports bra.
"Uhm, sorry. I'm not ready yet." Andy said trying to cover the scars she had on her stomach.
"No need to hide them. They are just the proof what you went through and how strong you are." Robert said sitting on the couch and trying to find something on TV to watch while he waits.
"Always knows what to say." She chuckled.
"Always late." He teased.
"Sorry, mister-always-on-time." Andy backfired.
Taking the time to remember some of the funny moments that she shared with Robert while they spent time together. How she tried to hide her nervousness with some jokes that weren't even funny. She had a smile on her face even thinking of all of it...
"I like him. Maybe more like love him." She said giggling trying to process what she actually said.
The happiness didn't last long because she got interrupted by hearing the team getting into the station. She got to the beanery wanting something to eat but what waited for her there no one expected.
"Welcome back!" Everyone shouted.
"Guys, wha... what is this? When you did this?" She said surprised.
"We were planning the surprise for a few days but we didn't know what will the surprise be and then chief suggested breakfast so... here we are!" Vic said excited.
"Chief...huh." She smiled looking at Robert while he tried to smile back.
They all sit and ate. Thankfully a call didn't interrupted them. After 30 minutes of laughs, jokes and some good food it was time for a line up and getting back to a normal routine.
Sitting just next to Robert helped them exchange a few looks and smiles what brought comfort to one another.
"Can we talk?" Robert asked whispering when Andy passed by him while going to her office.
She nodded and Robert followed her to her office.
"I just..." Robert started.
"No, no.." Andy interrupted and took a deep breath. "I want to apologize how I reacted. It was a little bit weird..." She turned to face him.
"It wasn't..." Robert didn't let her finish.
"I want to explain myself."
They were inches apart from each other. They could feel each other heart beating faster and faster...
"Me too..." Andy said trying to catch her breath.
Ladder 19, AidCar 19 car accident...
"When you get back..." Robert moved to the side.
"Yeah." She said with relief and ran towards the barn.
3 hours felt like forever. He kept pacing around his office, occasionally turning the radio on to hear where they were. To be honest he turned it on to hear how she was doing.
He heard the ladder was back and he prepared himself for her arrival. Robert wasn't a nervous person but this woman made him feel things he never felt before with anyone.
His door were open so Andy knocked on the door frame and enter, closing the door behind her. The blinds were already closed.
"So..." They both said unison.
"You start." Andy said.
"Okay." He let out a breath he's been holding feels like for the last 3 hours.
"I'm married. As you probably heard." Andy nodded playing nervously with her hands. " We are getting a divorce but she's been pain in the ass."
He came to the other side of her table and sat in one of the chairs, so Andy followed and sat in the other one.
"She is pregnant, you also saw that. It's not mine, to be clear." Andy felt an instant relieved. "She... Anne is her name. Anne cheated with one of the firefighters from my ex station. It would be that big of a deal... I mean it would but the most disgusting thing is that the whole station saw them doing it while I came last and well saw it too." He brushed his face with his hand.
"I packed my things the same night and left. To be honest the marriage was already on wobbly legs. We were living as a roommates for some time, I wasn't happy and neither did she. Transferred the station the following month. He made her pregnant a few months back and left her for God knows why and now she won't give me a divorce because she doesn't know what to do with a baby." He finished and throwing his hand back in the chair feeling relief that it's finally out.
Robert took her hands in his. "You have to know it wasn't my intention to hurt you in anyway I just didn't know how and when to tell you."
Andy pulled her hands back and ran them through her hair. "You are not the only one with things that you didn't know how to share..." She felt panic attack coming so she stood up.
"You okay?" He asked worried.
"I am. I am. I just need a little bit of water. Can you..." Before she even tried to finish the sentence he had a water bottle in his hands giving it to her.
"Thanks." She smiled. "It's funny how I don't even have to finish a sentence and you already know what I need..." She tried to smile and he gave her the most comforting look he could.
Andy sat back, brushed her hands against her thighs. Cold sweat was attacking her body.
"Okay... my turn. Oh gosh this thing only knows like 3 people and now you'll be 4th, I guess." She said still brushing her hands against her thighs.
"It's okay. Your thing will be safe with me. I promise."
Andy nodded and started...
"I had a boyfriend... uhm... who was living a double life. And I found out while I was on a call rescuing him and his wife. It was a car accident." She nervously smiled. The shock was evident on Robert's face.
"Later that day I found out that he's been married for over 2 years. I broke completely. He tried to contact me but I blocked him. Nothing that he wanted to say would excuse what he did. To me. And to her." A single tear fell of Andy's face and Robert again took her hands in his giving her support. He saw that this was hard on her. She opened some wounds that have been healed.
"I'm okay. I made peace with it. It's just... it's never gonna be easy talking about this..."
"There is more?" Robert kinda shouted in shock and Andy nodded.
"Oh God. If it's too hard you don't have to."
"No, no it's okay. Two months in pshych ward done its job." She tried to joke bit failed.
"I'm not crazy." She defended herself.
"I never said that. What happened?" He asked carefully.
"After all of that happened and amount of stress I've been under... I've lost his baby. And I didn't even know I was pregnant. That was the thing that was a breaking point."
"Oh my..." Robert stood up. He was angry at the guy he didn't know because her hurt the girl he likes.
Andy also stood up kind of following what he was doing.
"The universe said it wasn't meant to be and I hate to say this but deep down I'm kind of glad..." She said in discomfort judging herself for saying it.
"I just can't believe people are capable of doing this awful, disgusting things..." Robert said wanting to punch something.
"I get it why you run away that day."
"You do?" Andy asked even tho she knew why he gets it.
"Robert..." She got closer to him. "I know that we are basically the same. We know what we are thinking without even saying it." Robert got closer to resting his hands on her upper arms.
"I know that what we have and what we'll maybe have is unique and I know that you have feelings for me just like I have them. Because obviously I'm reading you like a book." She chuckled nervously.
"I'm just scared. I'm scared of all the things..." She looked up at the ceiling and took a deep breath...
"I know you are getting a divorce but we can't be anything more than friends until you finished it. It's not that I don't trust you it's just..." Andy started shaking.
"Say no more... I get it. Okay?" He looked at her and gave her a kiss on the forehead.
Andy nodded and they shared a long meaningful hug that said everything they couldn't. She buried her head into his chest and he hugged her tightly as possible.
"I'm always here for you. Day or night." He whispered and she nodded again not wanting to break the hug.
The hug was the place she felt the safest.
After they broke the hug he said one last thing...
"I'll get it done as soon as possible."
She smiled and left.
Thankfully the rest of the shift was quiet. Andy had the time to process all that just happened. She opened some old healed wounds and told someone new what happened to her.
She couldn't define how she was feeling. She wasn't happy but she wasn't sad either. She was excited. Still very careful not to be too excited.
Andy trusted Robert. Something was telling her that he is a good man. Man of the word. She would be lying if the only thing on her mind back then was to kiss him. So bad. Desperately.
But the brain is an amazing machine. And hers was telling her to wait. It's definitely going to be worth of waiting.
Robert on the other side in the station was in his own thoughts. He needs to get those papers done as soon as possible. One way or another that woman is going to sign them.
That's the only thing that is keeping him apart from, what is going to be, love of his life.
He was never more sure in anything else in his life.
The morning came quickly, both of them barely slept. They exchanged a few texts and decided to go together in the morning to the beach and have breakfast there.
They can enjoy each other's company at least.
Andy was already outside waiting for him to get ready. She was pacing around the entry when in the corner of her eye she catches some familiar face. When she was about to look up Robert came and hugged her with his one hand and they went to his car.
"Are you cold?" He asked while he opened the door.
"No, why?"
"You were shaking while we were walking towards the car."
"It was for 2 minutes and you catch that?" Andy asked shocked.
"So you are admitting it?" He gave her a look as he started the car.
Andy didn't say anything she just kept looking through the window. As the were driving Robert noticed she started playing with her fingers, squeezing her hands. He slowly placed his big hand on both of hers, what was enough to cover both of them.
"What's wrong?" He asked concern.
"Uhm... the guy we just pass with a woman and a dog..."
"Are you serious?"
Andy just nodded.
"First time I saw him since..." and Robert squeezed her hands tighter.
They parked 2 minutes after and Robert hurried to get out, coming to her side just when she closed the door.
Wrapping his arms around her and pulling her into hug.
"I'm sorry." He whispered softly. "I'm okay. It was just weird." She answered and pulled back. "I'm okay, don't worry. Let's move on with the day, shall we?" She smiled.
He kissed her forehead and they went to find a place to eat.
"For how long you are going to keep kissing my head?" Andy asked as she took a bite of her breakfast.
"Are you seriously mocking me, right now?" He chuckled almost chocked on his food.
"More like teasing."
As a revenge Robert stole a part of her meal with his fork when suddenly Andy frozed.
"Okay but like there is 3 more restaurants and he chose this one..." she finally said.
Robert quickly looked around to find him and when he spotted him Robert made sure the man saw him staring at him.
"We can go if you want, if you are not comfortable." He said after they passed their table and sat a few tables behind Andy.
"I can't see him so for me his is not there. He is not controlling my life anymore. I'm hungry so we are going when we finish our meals." She said in her calmly voice.
This statement made Robert chuckled but he was very proud of her handling the situation.
"You are incredible, you know that right?" He took her hand and caressed with his thumb.
"I'm doing my best." She smiled proudly.
After they finished they left, either of them not turning to give that man any more attention.
Walking down the beach Robert's phone rang. After seeing the caller ID he grunted.
Andy peeked and saw 'Anne' and quickly took his phone out of his hand.
"Can I, please?"
Robert was surprised but also intrigued what she will do.
"Go ahead. I had enough."
"Hello?"
"Hi. Who is that?" Anne asked.
"Someone. Robert is not available at this moment. Is there something important?" Andy said serious.
"I guess... not."
"If it's about divorce papers again, the only thing he cares about are signed papers. If you don't have them then call when you sign, until then is not available." Andy said and hung up.
They both started laughing hysterically. It was their way of venting after both of their exes tried to ruin their morning.
"Thank you." He said taking her hand brushing his thumb over her hand.
"Anytime."
Every part of her wanted to stop and kiss him right there and forget about everything she said. But also a tiny part was telling her not to do it.
It's been 2 months since they revealed their secrets to one another. The whole station was convinced they were dating. Even Ripley didn't believe him when he said they're not dating.
Ripley was in his office going through some paperwork with him when a knock interrupted them.
"Chief Robert Sullivan?" A unknown man asked.
"Yes. How can I help you?"
The man didn't say anything, he just gave him an envelope and said have a nice day.
Robert took the envelope and quickly opened it. He changed quite a few facial expressions. Going from confused to surprised to shocked to finally smiling with teary eyes.
"Luke... it's over. It's finally over." Robert said in disbelief. "She signed them. Oh my God." He kept holding his hand over his mouth.
He wanted to yell at loud he is finally free, he wanted the whole world to know he can finally be with his true love. But he couldn't do any of that because he was at work. Andy took a day off to be with her dad at the hospital so he had time to think how be will tell her.
As soon as Ripley left a phone rang. It was Andy. The wide smile immediately appeared on his face.
"Hey."
"Hey. How is shift?"
"Okay. What's up?"
"Uhm... wanted to tell you that... he died. My dad is gone."
*Silence*
"Ho... how? When?"
Andy's voice was calm. She didn't cry. Robert was already half way to the car but stopped by the beanery to inform everyone.
"I'm coming. We are coming."
"I just need you. Tell them but stay and work."
"Okay."
He informed everyone and left them all in shock. He didn't have time and he didn't know much so he could tell them more.
He was at GreySloan within 5 minutes finding her slowly pacing around in the hallway.
She immediately hugged him tight burring her face into his chest.
"I went to the cafeteria and when I came back he was gone. He went to sleep and never woke up."
"Oh Andy." Robert hugged her back.
"I'm okay. We were preparing for this for weeks now. We knew it will happen. It's just weird because he was here this morning and now he is gone."
"You don't have to repeat you are okay. It's okay to cry. He was your dad. You lost your dad."
"Last thing he said to me was 'You deserve happiness more than anyone in this world. So be happy and fearless.' I got to say my goodbye even tho I didn't know it was a goodbye."
A single tear rolled down her face and Robert brushed it with his thumb.
"I just wanna go home now." She took her bag and they went outside.
"My home or your home?"
"Mine? But... can you stay?"
"I'm planning to. Let's go."
On the way to his house he called Ripley to cover his shift.
"You go shower and I'll prepare something for you?" Robert closing the door.
Andy nodded and went to her room. Robert prepared some vegan pottage. She needed something warm to eat so this was perfect. The meal was ready just when she finished showering. They ate in silence and when Andy went to bed Robert just followed.
She laid down and Robert covered her then himself with the blanket and hugged her from behind, pulling her so close to him and her adjusting herself in his embrace. His warmth made her feel safe so soon she drifted to sleep.
"Dad! Dad!" She startled from her sleep starting to curling up her legs with her hands trying to figure out is this nightmare real.
Robert jumped as she started to yell and was quick to brought her back to reality.
"He really died." She started crying uncontrollably. "He is... gone."
"It's okay. It's okay. I'm here and I'm not going anywhere." Robert kept hugging her and repeating the words until she calmed.
She went back to laying down and Robert pulled her into his embrace. Resting her head on his chest, Robert removing her hair strands from her face and his heartbeat calmed her down and she went to sleep again. Robert stayed awake for a few more minutes to make sure she really went to sleep again.
"Soon you'll see what happiness looks like. And you'll be stuck with me forever. I promise you that."
He kissed top of her head and drifted to sleep.
