Damon's options are not save him or escape alone. He knows he can't save Enzo. His options are keep trying to save his friend and die in a fire or escape alone.
He does not want to leave without Enzo, but he knows he can't save him. He doesn't have the time or the strength or the key.
He does have a way to save himself, if he can just bring himself to take it.
Enzo's pleas escalate as Damon's thoughts show clearly on his face.
Damon's eyes drift closed, his choice made. When he opens them, they are blank.
Then he is gone.
