Elaina couldn't begin to tell of all that had been happening in Camelot.
Since the incident with Edwin, it barely seemed like the sea had calmed.
How many times had Arthur's life been threatened by girls, a dark knight, bandits; and when he struck a unicorn down, the whole kingdom was at risk!
then merlin's mother arrived, whose village was under attack, so of course the youngsters helped, as it was the least that they could do. Then there were moments that Elaina knew marked importance, such as the creation of Excalibur, the lady of the lake and also a boy, named Mordred. Like Arthur and merlin, she could feel there was a destiny laid out before him, which unlike with her friends, made Elaina feel uneasy and almost repelled to be around him. Opposite to her, morgana took a shine to him. Doing what she could to protect him, as he was a druid child within Camelot and hunted for that reason.
Then As for Gwen; unfortunately Her father had been executed as a traitor, not proven guilty of anything, but ran when imprisoned. Thus, the guards did as they were ordered, as the action sentenced him to that unfair death.
But Elaina had noticed something stirring in the air between the handmaid and Arthur. They shared glances when they thought no one was watching, Arthur's back straightened when she was near, his lack of concentration daydreaming more than ever before. When caught his cheeks burned and the same for Gwen, who was more attentive to her hair and seemed braver in front of the prince, not as timid as before.
Whether it would go anywhere, Elaina was anxious to see. it was sweet to watch them and they each could do wonders for the other. Gwen with her kindness and Arthur in his confidence. A story was certainly there…
It was morgana Elaina was worried about, now more than ever and she blamed herself furiously for it.
Since that day, when Elaina pushed morgana to use her magic to free her from Edwin's spell; she hasn't really been the same happy go lucky person. She frowned and was solemn more than she ever was smiling and laughing. Any little thing startled her like her nerves were just fraying apart. Then there were the nightmares as morgana called it. what those moment truly were, was her magic trying to claim release when her body was vulnerable in sleep. Fires and broken windows have been the result and premonitions, which beat even Elaina's gifts sometimes.
she was at a loss on what to do. Morgana wouldn't talk to Elaina about anything that was going on with her and she felt that she shouldn't make her to do so, because of how fearful she was. All Elaina could do was hold morgana, to reinforce the idea that she was not alone, loved and accepted by her.
she did it every day, every time she looked lost and every night before she slept. Elaina gave her signs that she was her sister and would never be anything less than that, by one touch or a smile, when morgana was ready to talk to her, she will listen.
Thankfully, they had their amusement too, when Uther married and loved a troll. A source of jokes and laughter for many years to come yet. He didn't so much as look at Elaina now because it was written all over her face that she adored this fact, persistently giving him the reminder of it when no one else would dare.
It came into her head, she should write a book with all the goings on, but who could believe all this applied to one kingdom.
"are you ready yet Elaina?" morgana asked at the door.
A knighting ceremony was taking place and naturally the royal household needed to be present, with a feast to look forward to afterwards. It was morgana and Elaina's role to give their blessing as innocent women, to whom they protect and impress with their bravery. so they honour tradition in bestowing a floral circlet to their heads, as they line up in two overly eager queues for them. It was a boring affair of listening to Uther go on and on in his speech about honour but one they had to endure.
"of course!"
They both wore white for the occasion, to promote their purity as fragile women, which called for disaster if there was wine to be served and treats to follow. Some last twirls to make sure nothing was out of place, Elaina and morgana made their way to the great hall.
They didn't enter from the main doors but appeared behind Uther's throne. The men became nervous on their feet, exchanging cheeky or shy looks at the lady's and each other. They won't get far if it took a woman to make them break their resolve.
Arthur rolled his eyes, "making us wait for dramatic effect I suppose."
"are we that transparent morgana?" Elaina gasped, fanning her face to irritate Arthur more.
"apparently so. We temptresses!"
Gwen had accompanied the ladies and She was never short behind them. since her father's passing, they had adopted Gwen into their family because they were the only ones who knew her just as well as her father did. she could be open with them during her day and not worry in proving her innocence or calm idle gossip that followed her now. it was liberating with them and they made sure she was ok and when Gwen wasn't, they did what they could to ease her pain. Once even organising a day where they waited on her instead of the other way around, showing how much they appreciated her work and devotion, and for her company as cherished friend.
"don't be silly; you both look as beautiful as always."
Arthur cleared his throat, twitchy to be insulting Gwen's ladies in her present, "oh, yes of course. And you Gwen look…lovely."
Elaina snorted at Arthur's poor attempt at flattery. Clearly, he was out of practice and should return in saying those things to the mirror, if that's what he did, before he could talk to girls as it needed refining.
He shot Elaina a dirty look, but she wouldn't embarrass neither Gwen nor him in saying outright what she suspected. Morgana hadn't picked up on it yet and she wondered if merlin knew. But then he could read the prince like a book and Elaina doubted he was as cordial in letting Arthur's crush go on, without mentioning it to him.
"my ladies."
A servant came with the circlets for their approval. They were green with lush leaves and dotted with tiny daffodil heads, symbolising new beginnings and rebirth for the men who were about to become knights. It was also the flower of house pendragon and the sisters gave their thanks for the women for their hard work.
Eight were before them and eight men waited.
Morgana and Elaina stood with the first circlets to be given in their hands when Uther begun. Only Elaina found she was starting to drift away, not only because she was uninterested in what the king had to say, but there was something not quite right.
A presence was in Camelot, familiar to her like a part of herself called to them reaching a part of Elaina, no one had before. She looked at morgana, who also seemed to share in this. Her mouth was slightly agape with a far-off stare. Elaina held her hand and by doing so it amplified the connection. Not knowing the other saw the same thing, an armoured figure was making their way to the castle, easily, and with short work on the guards. Somehow, Elaina knew that it was because of her and morgana, that they found their way around the kingdom, answering this strange call.
She didn't have time in providing any warning and the doors burst open, with them charging in. everyone was alerted by the sudden interruption, watching in shock as they threw their gauntlet to the ground at the prince's feet, demanding a dual. Arthur was honour bound to accept. He lifted the piece of armour and saw no obvious workmanship to give clues of where this person hailed from.
"you can at least do me the courtesy of revealing your identity."
Without a word, they removed their helm letting loose long yellow hair. A beautiful woman, not a brute of a knight at all, scorned by missing the ceremony or for any other reason, such as a proving of worth.
Whispers erupted and gasps of wonder and surprise. What would they want in fighting the prince? Was she a scorned love of his, a girl trying to prove her strength despite being seen as the fragile sex?
but Elaina was closer to the truth than anyone.
This was Morgause, her sister. And she was no friend to Camelot or Arthur. Whatever her being in in the kingdom meant, it wouldn't be good.
