When Naruto Uzumaki entered the room, Kakashi had to suppress the urge to start rubbing at his temples prematurely. With the boys obnoxiously loud orange jumpsuit and the way his voice carried before even entering the room (he could hear him talking from down the hall). Kakashi knew he would be grasping at his wits end fighting off a headache.
Still, he had a job and duty to carry out.
"When was the last time you heard from Miss Haruno?" Kakashi starts off after they finish up their pleasantries and greetings. The carefree smile on the blond's face fell as soon as the word 'Haruno' sounded from Kakashi's lips. A solemn expression came over him and the air in the room shifted almost instantaneously.
"When we were all parting ways from my family's house in the woods, but I already told you that." Naruto pauses, leaning back into the chair and a loud resounding squeak echoes throughout the room. "Have you guys found any leads? Are you guys finally bringing her home?" His voice lilted at the end, some hope glimmering. Kakashi felt terrible that he was about to squash it like a bug.
"No, we are just recovering our bases. We want to make sure there are no stones left unturned."
"I see.."
"We are trying our best-"
"I know," Naruto cuts him off and crosses his arms as he leans back into his chair. His head tilts upwards and he lets out a long sigh. "We just all miss her so much. Sasuke, especially. The guy hasn't been the same since everything."
"Have you heard from Mr. Uchiha lately?" Kakashi decides to ask, testing the waters to see if he could find anything about the young man's own disappearance from his friend circle.
"I was over at his house the other day, but it isn't often that I am able to get past his parents or brother to see him." Naruto sighs out and messes with his hair just a bit. He sets his blue eyes on Kakashi, a sad smile forming. "Sakura was his whole world. She kept him together in his darkest moments - how do you live without your sun?"
Kakashi turns off his car as he places it into park. Leaning his forehead against his steering wheel, he takes a deep breath. He figured one last talk with the Uchiha's wouldn't hurt. Finding his resolve, he slowly gets out of his car. The door slams just a little too roughly, but Kakashi is well on his way up the front porch of the old victorian style house that the Uchiha's reside in. Once up there, Kakashi rasped his knuckles against the old, refurbished door with a firm knock or two.
It didn't take long before a small, pale woman opened the door.
"Detective Hatake Kakashi, may I speak to your son, Sasuke Uchiha?"
It wasn't long before he was inside the blank, dark, living room of the Uchiha's with one very tired Sasuke Uchiha sitting across from him. He had eye bags upon eye bags and circles underneath his eyes. He looked frail and small, hunched over on the couch. Essentially, he had lost his life's spark.
"Have you found her yet?" Sasuke asks, skipping any form of greeting between the two of them.
"No, we haven't-"
"Then we are done here," Sasuke cuts him off and moves to get up.
"I just wanted to ask you a few questions so that we can find her." This causes the younger boy to pause in his movements. Kakashi could see the conflict in his face and saw the exact moment that he made up his mind before he plops back down on the couch. "We found her phone, we are hoping any answers that you can't provide us with, we can find it using that."
"Maybe," Sasuke mumbles. "She documented everything - even things that she probably shouldn't."
"Right now we are checking for other DNA samples and then we will be going through it. In the meantime, could you remind me when the last time you spoke to Miss Haruno was?"
"One, maybe two days, before we weren't able to get into contact with her," Sasuke says and he looks so, so very tired at that moment. "I had dropped her off at her house a day after we came back from the little trip we all had." There was a moment of hesitation in his eyes before he decided to give in. "If I had known that it was the last time that I would see her, I would have spent more time hugging her than yelling at her."
"You guys were in a fight? Could you tell me what it was about," Kakashi prods as he writes down some notes. Sasuke's eyes trailed off to the side, out to where a closed door was. A sign hung on it loosely, 'Do not disturb' was written in bold letters.
"Not the specifics. It had something to do with my family, though."
"Is there anything else you can remember at all about that day?"
"She seemed like she needed to tell me something, but she never got around to it." Sasuke sighs as he hunches over just a tad bit more. His tangly and messed up hair fell into his face. "I wish I knew what it was. It seemed important," he sighs out.
It was a few weeks later when the phone was back in Kakashi's possession. Just as he had thought, they weren't able to get anything substantially useful from the DNA test. The useful information was inside, Kakashi could feel it.
Setting up the phone on his desk, he hummed in thought. He felt like he was invading her personal life but he had no choice. Hopefully, wherever she was, Sakura Haruno wouldn't mind it.
"Sasuke and I have been dating for three months now, but I just know that he is the one for me-"
"Sasuke took me to the movies-"
"Sasuke said he loves-"
"Sasuke-"
Recording after recording was about Sasuke. How he loved her like no other, took care of her, and how happy she was with him. Every now and then a recording would mention one of her friends but the further she got into her relationship with Sasuke, the less any other names popped up. Rubbing his temples, he prepares to press play on another video, noting that he was four months away from the last entry date before her disappearance.
"I met his family today. His brother and mom are so sweet, but his dad is a little… scary. Ino says that is just how dads are but mine isn't like that and neither is hers. I hope he isn't too hard on Sasuke, he already does so much!"
"Sasuke's dad made me go home early today. I could hear him yelling at his mom and Sasuke as I left the house and got in my car. I didn't mean to upset anyone, I just don't think it's fair for Sasuke to be forced into a career he doesn't even want-"
"I think Sasuke and I should run away-"
"Sasuke has been acting kind of weird lately-"
"My friends and I are all planning a surprise trip for Sasuke in two months from now! We're going to use Naruto's family's vacation house. I'm so excited!"
"Sasuke and I fought today-"
"Sasuke hasn't talked to me in a week-"
"Sasuke cried in my arms today. I didn't know what else to do but hold onto him. I wish he could see just how amazing he is."
Kakashi droned off to sleep to the sound of Sakura talking on and on about how wonderful everything was at the moment. The last thing he heard before falling asleep against his desk was,
"We made love …"
