Over the next 11 months Emily and Derek became very close, basically attached at the hip. They were always together unless they were in their separate classes or sleeping. Emily had blossomed during this nearly a year, both physically and socially. She still had her dark days and shyness at first with new people. But Derek had broken her out of her shell for the most part. He never hesitated to tell her she looked pretty or to compliment a characteristic of hers that he liked. He was slowly helping her to find her worth and realize that the world can just be a shitty place; it didn't mean that she deserved it or that she was shitty too. She had learned to love herself and on the days that her mother was just awful to her and made her forget she would run to her bestfriend. He always made everything better. She had grown a couple inches, now sitting at 5'5", still short compared to him though which he always teased her about. She ditched the bangs and now had a middle part with long layers to compliment her dark hair that now was reaching the lower part of her back. Derek's mom graciously had started to pay for Emily to have braces despite the protest from him because he insisted that her imperfect teeth were "cute". He was lucky and had his back in middle school not now at almost 17. She had changed so much in total that he started to compare it to the metamorphosis of a caterpillar and gave her the new nickname "Butterfly", she would fake cringe when he said it to her but she secretly loved it.

It's now October. Summer break came and went fast and it looked like all hope for fun was over until now. As close as they had gotten, she hadn't told him what her birthday was because she hated celebrating it. While everyone had parties and presents and cake, she had never once gotten any of that. It wasn't a celebration to her, it was a reminder of the fact that her mother didn't want her and resented her for being born.

Now, only 2 days before Halloween, Derek's friend JD was having a costume party at his house. Normally kids in movies wait until their parents are leaving town but, JD's parents didn't care. They said they would rather them drink and smoke at home than somewhere random where there was more chance of them getting hurt or something along those lines. Emily and Derek were not dating at this point, they still hadn't even kissed, but it was very obvious to everyone BUT them what they were.

Today, they were on a mission though; find costumes for the party. Em is 17 now, seeing as her birthday was just a couple weeks ago, even though he didn't know that. He still had to wait until June for his birthday to come around, making him younger than her.

After school the 2 teens agreed to meet up after putting their things in their lockers since they had last period together. Emily felt good today. Her mother had gotten pretty bad into her addiction lately, which sadly was a good thing for her. It meant she got left alone for the most part. She was standing at her locker, attempting to organize it a bit when she felt a warm hand grip her waist and the hot breath of a whisper into her ear saying, "Hey butterfly.." and then a chuckle from the person behind her. She rolled her eyes and turned to see Derek of course, giving him a smack on the chest earning a wince and another laugh from him. "Shut up." she said sternly, yet not being able to help the smirk beginning to develop upon her lips, exposing a dimple. She knew his flirting wasn't real, and just his way of trying to make her feel good about herself. Or did she? Either way, she'd be lying if she said she didn't absolutely love it. She had totally fallen for him but she would probably never admit that. After coming out of her thoughts, Em slammed her locker shut and they were now on their way to the stores to find what they needed.

It was the night of the party now and the two were at their separate homes getting ready. During their shopping they decided to surprise each other with their costumes. Derek was going as Rocky Balboa, and Emily as Morticia Addams. Derek's mother let him use her car that night and said to make sure he called a taxi for them two if need be. It was just a little after 9pm when he pulled up to her house and honked twice to signal that he was there. He never knocked on her door; Em didn't allow it in fear of a possible outburst from her mother. She snuck down the stairs, peeking around the corner she was relieved to see Elizabeth sleeping on the couch. She had succumbed to the slew after having been up for a few days now.

Derek was sitting in the car, flicking through the radio, when he looked up and laid eyes on her. He immediately got out of the car to open the door for her, not realizing that he hadn't even said words yet and his mouth was still sitting slightly open in shock. She couldn't help but to tease him. "Cat got your tongue?" Emily was in a long, skin tight, black dress with long sleeves. The end of sleeves and from the shin down on her dress were flared and dangly. Her hair perfectly split down the middle and straight, paired with dark but elegant makeup. She sat down in the car and waited as he walked back around and got into the driver's side. "Are you supposed to be Rocky?" She questioned, slowly scanning over his body as his costume which only consisted of some red boxer short, socks and shoes, and some boxing gloves that he hadn't put on yet since he was driving. He flashed her a grin, "I wasn't sure if you would know. Morticia right?" He quipped back. She rolled her eyes playfully, "Duhhh." Seemingly replying to both things he said. "You look good by the way.." She said, a bit of her timid side coming out again which of course made him full of himself.

Derek and Emily had one of the best nights ever between the two of them. They danced and drank and laughed and smoked all through the night. God did they laugh. It was the most relaxed he had ever seen his bestfriend. She was really in her element that night. An upbeat but romantic song started to play and Em was about 6 beers in by now and numerous shots of tequila. Whereas Derek, was only about 3 or 4 beers in, trying to stay half sober for the sake of them getting home. She looked up at him, giving a goofy look in an attempt to make him laugh which worked just like every time she does it to him and then inched her body closer to his, letting her hand rest on his stomach, letting her fingers trace the outline of his defined abs, never breaking eye contact as she did.

He wasn't sure how to respond, he loved it of course but he also felt wrong in fear of ruining their friendship. He just watched her, scanning her face for a clue on what she truly wanted.

Em's hand had slowly moved its way up to his chest, but he was too deep in thought to notice. She made soft patterns on the smooth area before deciding to just go for it. It isn't called liquid courage for nothing. Before he could decide what to do, Emily had stood on her tiptoes, cupping both sides of his face in her hands she closed the gap between them, letting their lips crash into each other's passionately but gentle. It was so blissful and everything they had wanted from the moment they met. But he was convinced she was just drunk and probably wouldn't even remember doing it after she woke up.

Little did Derek know the nightmare that was to come the next day after dropping her off at home was way more to worry about than this moment right here.

So I had to cut it short, don't kill me lol. But next chapter is the time jump and we get to see them separated and then reunited almost 15 years later! Hope y'all enjoyed! Xoxo
