StevenZ12: Good Afternoon all of you :D . I hope that you are doing well. On my side of the story it's doing amazing!
I finally finished my semester at University. That one was a long, doozy affair, but with Arceus's grace I have powered through it. It was great for sure. Now I am in this strange limbo where I have too much time on my hands, and we all know what that means!
More writing haha!
Christmas is approaching, so I will probably make something tailored for the holidays. I would like to take the time to wish everyone Happy holidays and Merry Christmas. It'll be oddly different this year, but it shouldn't stop the spirit of the event. Take care of yourselves and your loved ones. It's very important :)
That's enough TED talk, place to the chapter!
Previously on Nuevo: After a very eventful trip in the Forest of Illusions, Andre and the crew made it on route 6 on their way to Pueblo Leaf Grove. They encountered a less than pleasent fellow going by the name Christiano Fernando Pizarro. Between him and our protagonist, sparks flew rather quickly. Upon leaving, the shaggy haired teenager announced to our heroes that he would ''conquer'' the region. What exactly did he mean? What's brewing for our cast as they arrive at the pueblo? Stay tuned to find out!
Chapter 23: Pueblo Leaf Grove
''... Christiano Fernando Pizarro!''
On a hill close to the Pueblo, illuminated by roaming bug types pokemon whose luminescence lit up the depressing dusk caractheristic of the Forest night, Andre was looking at the distance, thinking. The lentimas native hadn't been himself ever since his confrontation with CFP.
''You must be one of these kids who believe that they can change the world for the better by the force of their will right...''
That sentence had been turning in his mind non-stop for the entire day. The odd part wasn't that the lentimas native was wondering if he ''could'' make a difference. But rather that these very select words stirred up memories that he'd rather not stir...
Tired, Andre sighed and closed his eyes in an attempt to relax.
He wished he hadn't.
Behind his closed eyes formed a disturbing image. A charred, barren mountainside. A lot of trees were comply charred to the very bark. There were spots of fuming, smoldering lava traces and the sky was covered by a deathly dark cloud. A taller, red and black wearing figure stood tall in front of him. A blue jackal only a few feet shorter standing next to him while confronting a behemothal monster, his jaws open like the gates of Hell themselves, anything coming on contact with the beast catching fire in an instant, his eyes red and menacing. The tall figure turning to him, mouthing out something to him before everything turned black... The last thing he sees being a flash of blue followed by a wave of magma.
''FUCK!''
The Lentimas native eye's shutted open as he rolled on his feets, his heart beating an imperial march like crazy in his chest. A very unpleasent, metallic taste was lingering in his mouth. When he spit to get the taste out of his mouth, the grass was stained a pale crimson. Andre shook violently before punching the ground. Just like before, the pain that reverbered in his fist offered him a oddly satisfying comfort. He briefly thought of his friend, a lovely white haired angel that surely wouldn't like to know that he was punching the ground hard enough to crack his knuckles open, but right now, he didn't care. He needed to take his mind off this or he would never be in peace. Burdening the group with his luggages was not something he wanted to do. After all...
''I must be the one they rely on in the end...not the opposite...'' He muttered before punching the ground a few times more, the pain in his knuckles dulling the aching of his heart. If anything, he could just pass his discomfort as training and some shit.
Unbeknownst to him, a fiery, golden gaze was set on him.
Vixen had woken up from her sleep, her instinct urging to move around and prowl on the starry, moonless night. She had some pent up energy to spare and she decided to use it by walking around camp. One tender lick on the tip of her trainer's nose, not unlike a vulpine goodnight kiss, and gone she was, swallowed by darkness a few steps further.
The fire type had been wondering close to the hill when she heard a shout , followed by dull sounds repeatedly happening in an almost rythmic fashion. The fire fox's ears twitched as her curiosity got the better of her and thus followed the sounds until she got to their source.
When she did get to said source...what she saw broke her tiny heart.
It was Andre, her beloved trainer's crush, looking utterly miserable. He was kneeling on the ground now, pounding away at the ground furiously. The raven haired trainer was not wailing, but tears were flowing, rolling on his cheeks like small rivers. The fire type vixen knew that punches must be hurting him and yet was puzzled at why he wasn't stopping.
"Why on earth are you doing this to yourself...Is this some human custom?" Thought the golden furred fire type as she watched him pause out of sheer pain.
The fire type shook her head and sighed. "If there is one person that can help him, it's her... Well, she's not going to like that though" She reasoned as she darted as quietly as possible toward camp, her mind solely focused on one thing.
Andre didn't know how long he kept pounding at the ground. He didn't care either. At some point, the reverberated pain on his knuckles, wrist and shoulders was too much and he had to pause. He thought he heard some rustling in the bushes nearby. He narrowed his eyes at them, trying to see what could be in them but ultimely didn't care much as the rustling stopped.
"Probably some Pokemon I scared away..." He dismissed out loud.
Still on his knees, he looked up to the moon, momentarily reveling in the phantasmal beauty of its light. The pain in his arms was dulling and his thoughts slowly shifted from that barren landscape to the present time.
His adventures so far with Snow and Sven. The codex stealing problem he had agreed to help stop. His League quest. The unanswered questions he had about his ancestries. The two assholes both he and Snow had personal problems with now. The dangerous and beautiful Malitzin, from the enforcers, that had tried to kill him and seduce him in the same afternoon...
"Arceus...Not even two months in and I have lived through all of that... That's Crazily..." He whispered, chuckling softly.
Chuckles that became a little bit louder when he realized that he had made a bad pun that would make Sven proud.
Sadly, just as fast as that jolly mood had come, it faded away as his thoughts were whirled back to that dreadful moment...
More tears spilled from his eyes and frustration seized him like a vicious squall.
"Why the fuck can't I get a hold of myself...He told me to be strong...I can't fucking act like a pussy about it now when I was doing so damn well. Arceus damn it All!" He lowkey shouted as he clenched his right fist and reared it up, as if preparing a punch that would destroy the entire hill he was on.
"Andre?"
A soft, sweet and slightly sleepy voice had called him. Andre stopped cold in his movement, his fist barely inches above ground. He turned his face toward the voice and was stunned momentarily.
Snow was standing near the bushes. Her form illuminated by moonlight, her face worried and saddened by the fact that her friend looked so distressed.
Andre gulped. She always had this air about her that would make her look much cuter when bathed in moonlight...but tonight was particulairily intense. In a desesperate attempt to look normal and in control, the Lentimas native waved in a friendly fashion.
"Hey Snow..."
Snow looked at Andre and saw his wave. However, she wasn't blind. Andre looked wrecked beyond belief. His face, also illuminated by moonlight, clearly showed how tired he was. His cheek had traces present in them and his eyes were slightly red...tell tale signs that the lentimas native didn't have a good time.
Snow walked toward Andre and sat down next to him. "Hey Andre..." She replied as she put a hand on his.
Andre almost closed his eyes at the soothing sensation, but kept his focus.
"Aren't you out late? You should have been sleeping by now you know?" Andre jollily told Snow.
The white haired teenager sweatdropped. "Y-yeah...but.." she started while reminiscing events that had taken place a few moments before.
*** Flashback ***
Snow was sleeping peacefully when something wet tickled her nose.
A golden furball was trying to get her attention and she was hard-pressed to get it.
"Come on Snow, you gotta get up" Growled the fire type fixen as she kept nuzzling and licking Snow's nose.
The white haired teenager groaned and turned, but stayed asleep, much to the frustration of her starter who momentatily contemplated setting her beautiful hair on fire to wake her up.
"You're lucky I like your hair..." Growled the vixen as she moved to the other side and decided to play a little ...rough.
"Excuse me for this...but you'll thank me later.." She resoluted as she gave Snow's nose a nibble with her sharp canines.
The effect was immediate.
"Oww owww I'm up! I'm Up!" Panickly said Snow as she jolted awake, holding her nose with small tears in her face. She looked absolutely adorable like that, but that was beside the point. Vixen was proudly sitting across her, her nose in the air with a very satisfied look on her face.
Snow looked at her starter in bemusment. "Hmm Vix...can you explain to me why you though ot was a good idea to wake me up that late during the night?" She asked her starter, doing all she could so she wouldn't sound grumpy and failing miserably.
Not at all intimidated with the rough mood of her human, Vixen yipped her response. " Your friend is in distress. I'll take you to him." She said as she darted out of the tent, motioning Snow to follow her.
Bewildered, Snow quickly threw her poncho on and followed Vixen toward the hill.
*** End of flashback ***
"Let's say that I had a messenger telling me to come to the hill." She said before turning to Andre. "What about you though. You normally sleep like a Snorlax. Why were you all alone on this hill?" She asked the Lentimas native.
Andre gulped. He should have known that Snow would ask that. He did not want lie to her, yet did not want to tell her what was the matter. So reluctantly, he chose to lie. "I was just training myself and admiring the moonlight, you know...the usual..." Andre replied with a grin.
Snow looked at Andre. The answer was rather convincing, but that grin looked so fake that Snow immediately knew she would hate it when he'd try that on her.
Snow's bangs covered her eyes and she squeezed Andre's hand hard, earning a growl of discomfort from him.
"Andre..." She growled dangerously.
Andre gulped at her change of tone... Way too reminiscent of his sister and mother when they got angry.
"Holy... Er.. Yes Iztaca?" The Lentimas native replied, partially hoping that the use of his endearing nickname for her would calm her down.
Snow's cheek dusted crimson for a second, warmth spreading through her chest at the mention of her nickname, but she didn't allow that to completely evaporate her peeve, no matter how tempting it was.
"Nice try btw, but don't lie to me. I saw you on you knees, looking miserable...I don't like that." She said before her tone shifted to something much more soothing and gentle.
"Don't grin like everything is okay when it isn't, I can see right through it and I hate it..." She said softly as her finger intertwined with Andre's in a soothing gesture.
Just like that, Andre's grin vanished and he winced, the dull pain in his knuckles returning even if Snow's fingers caressing his were sending all sorts of warm fuzzles through him.
Andre sighed and took a seat next to Snow, his fingers still entertwined with hers. "Sorry Snow, I just did not want to worry you..." He admitted, hanging his head low. Lying to Snow would always leave a bad taste on his mouth and a heavy burden on his consciousness, he realized that at this moment.
Snow nodded, her head gently laying on Andre's shoulder.
Andre sighed. Snow's presence was soothing him so much, he couldn't help but to feel grateful for it. Gently laying his head toward Snow's, his temple touching her soft white hair, the Lentimas native closed his eyes, thanking all the Gods for Snow's care.
They stayed like that, not talking for several minutes, merely enjoying each other's presence. After a while, Andre felt like he at least owed Snow an explanation: "It's what that punk, Pizarro, said." He bitterly muttered.
Snow blinked, now at full attention.
"When he said that I was a kid that though he could save the world if he had the will...it stirred memories that id rather forget..." Andre explained softly as tears treathened to fall from his eyes.
Snow felt her heart leap in her chest. Andre's sadness looked so profound. She gently wrapped her fingers around his im support. "Andre..." She softly whispered in sadness.
Snow really wanted to know what were those memories, what darkness a guy as kind as Andre could be carrying for him to look as miserable as he was right now. But knew better to ask, something that Andre was grateful for.
The white haired teen then pulled Andre in a hug, her nose in the crook of his neck and her lips close to his ear.
"I don't know what troubles you so, Andre, but I am here for you. We all are. You don't need to hurt yourself or isolate yourself to cope. We're your friends, lean on us a bit, will you?" She whispered to him as she ran her fingers in his hair in a soothing gesture.
Powerful warmth erupted in Andre's chest at these words and he quickly grew lightheaded due to the delicious feeling of Snow's hands on his scalp. What exactly was this girl doing to him? He wondered. Snow was right however, he wasn't alone, she could see right through him and she hated that he had taken a liking to knuckle the ground to cope.
"You found me out heh..." Andre chuckled as he returned the hug, enjoying a little more than he expected the feeling of Snow's soft hair between his fingers.
Snow pinched the back of his neck. "You idiot..." She said, leaning a little more into him, biting back a sigh of comfort at Andre playing with strands of her hair.
Andre winced and chuckled " And here I thought that I was quiet enough..." He sighed.
Snow shook her head. "You little sleepyhead...I leave you out of my sight for a few hours and I find you all the way there with such a face... You won't stop making me worry will you..?" She jested as she gently ran her fingers up and down the back of is head, making Andre growl in delight, his whole body relaxing.
Said Andre couldn't even formulate a coherent response. Snow's presence. Her soft hair and kind words. Her unbelievably soothing fingers running through his unruly raven hair. All of those factors soothed him so much. He loved that. He had never knew how much he liked his hair being played with before that moment. For that moment, only the warmth generated by Snow's ministrations was on his mind, nothing else. Eventually, as his mind quieted down to lay in Morphée's arms, he managed to mutter a soft, sleepy two words, that carried all if his feelings toward the white haired angel that had helped him here.
"Thank you...Iztaca..."
Snow smiled tenderly as she realized that Andre had fallen asleep in her arms. Silently squealing at how cute he looked, she settled him on her tights before laying down as well. But not before she had gently leaned on him, feeling bold.
"Sweet dreams, sleepyhead" She whispered to him as she gently pecked his forehead.
She settled down right after, her heart beating like crazy at what had just happened between the two. But quickly grinned happily, staring at the moon.
"At least, he knows we're here for him. Tomorrow should be a good day." She said as she closed her eyes and fell asleep.
The next morning was kind and nice. A soft breeze accompanying the morning dew was what woke up Sven from his trip to dreamland. Stretching and yawning, he sat up wondering what new fuckery would happen today.
Travelling with the kids had proven to be interesting so far. They were great teenagers and were surprisingly sensitive for their age. Most teens their age wouldn't be so interested by the history of a region when going through it. Most teens wouldn't agree to help complete strangers to tackle a problem that they had absolutely no interest in. Yet here they were. The assignment given by the council had bren the reason he had followed them around, and rightly so. Who knew what kind of crazy things two hormonal teens that didn't even fully realize that they liked each other could do without an adult checking on them...
"These two I swear. Welp, time to lift camp! Today we are reaching Pueblo Leaf Grove!" He jollily shouted , making his Gilla pop up in annoyance.
"OY! Keep it down will ya?" He hissed at his trainer who merely shrugged in response.
"By now, you should be used to it pup.'' Retorqued the older teen with a wide grin as he exited his tent.
Around camp, the Pokemons that weren't in their Pokeballs were stirring up, woken by the morning dew and the coming to life of the daytime meadow sounds. One such mon was Aguade, who had been curled next to the tent. The blue hatchling's eyes fluttered open, his groggy mind barely registering his sourroundings before he sat up, looking absolutely confused.
''Aww man...that was one sweet dream I was having...all evolved and thrashing heads..'' He muttered before heading into his trainer's tent, with the intent to wake up his human for the all important morning feed time.
The water type quickly realized that something was odd. He was still barely awake so his eyesight wasn't exactly focused...but his sense of smell was there...and Andre's was much fainter than it should have been.
''Wait a minute...That ain't normal...'' He reasoned before quickly making to the back of the tent, burying his nose in his trainer's sleeping bag.
No Andre, no messy raven hair he could pull, no strong arms that would hold him even if he was asleep... No Andre anywhere in the tent... That only meant one thing...
''EMERGENCY MEETING! CODE RED! HELP!'' Shouted the panicked hatchling as he exited the tent, looking very distraught.
Sven looked up at the noise and saw an absolutely wide eyed Aguade beeline toward him, jumping in his arms and shout his name over and over while pointing to Andre's tent.
The older teen barely had the time to lift his arms to catch the panicked water starter and tried to make heads and tails of what he was saying, despite his understanding of Pokemon being pretty good.
''Whoa whoa buddy, you're going to have to slow down on the quick attacks man... I aint some steel types you know? Now what is it?'' he asked as calmly as he could to try to influence the starter to do the same.
Thankfully, Iztatl was still very impressionable, so it worked. The hatchling took two breaths before explaining himself.
''Andre ain't in his tent!'' He said, panic evident in his voice.
Sven nodded. ''Ahh, now I get why you'd be upset. I am sure he is nearby, maybe to pick up some water and berries for breakfast?'' He offered as explanation.
Aguade kind of got it, but also cocked his head. ''Yeah, but normally he never leaves without me when he go on food duty...'' He thought aloud.
''Of course you'd get distressed, Iztatl. Snow ain't here either, but you don't see me making such a scene this early in the morning.'' Said a voice that oozed calm and superiority, making both boys sweatdrop and turn their head toward the author of that remark.
As Usual, the golden furred vixen was standing on a nearby rock, cleaning her fur in such a lady like fashion that Iztatl stared and Sven had to hold back a sigh of aggravation. Leave it to the sassy fire type to make them look like fools, even if in that instance, Sven had done nothing to indicate as such.
Said Iztatl jumped down Sven's arms and walked toward the rock the Vixen was standing on, a mean glint in his eyes.
''Oh yeah? If you are so smart then, tell me where the hell they are? Without them, we can't feed ya know?'' Aguade shouted at the vixen, puffing his chest to look more menacing.
The fire vixen looked less than impressed and more amused by his attempt at pushing her around. ''I do know where they are, but i wonder if I should reveal that information to someone as misbehaved as you? Well, do tell me, Iztatl'' She teased the water type as she stretched and jumped down, passing a tail right under Aguade's chin in such a patronizing way that even Sven and Gilla cringed.
''Well, the princess vixen sure is in a joking mood this morning...'' Noted Gilla as he took his usual perching position atop Sven's shoulders.
Sven nodded. Must have been one hell of a night for Vixen to act like that. ''You think? I rarely saw that bordeline tag hellspawn so lighthearted...yet she still manage to keep that regal air about her. I wonder how she does it?'' Sven inquired. His purple friend on his shoulder shrugged.. ''Dunno, maybe it's something inherent to fox species...'' He theorized as they watched an enraged...but madly blushing Iztatl chase the Vixen around.
Eventually, the two of them stopped, with Iztatl now being more concerned about reuniting with his trainer than to save his masculine pride. Vixen yipped playfully at her win, before motioning to all of them to follow her as she dissapeared behind some shrubs, Iztatl hot on her tails.
Sven followed soon after, not showing it but being slightly concerned about the two teens whereabouts.
Andre had been the first to wake up after a more than restful night. He felt completely refreshed, something that he hadn't fully experienced in a long while. The pain in his knuckles was completely gone and he was filled with energy. It was a strange feeling, considering that he hadn't woken up in his regular sleeping bag, but rather... outside, his head resting on something soft...warm and smooth? Upon sitting up, he realized , his face hot at the realization, that he had slept on Snow's thight all night. He smiled however. Somehow, nobody had seen it, so he wouldn't be teased to death about it. It had been nice...easily one of the best sleep he ever had. The lentimas native took that opportunity to observe the still sleeping Snow a little closer. His insides melted at the sight. Snow looked so peaceful and content. Her face the very definition of cute, with a strand of hair lazily laying on top of her face. Her beautiful skin that seemed to glow in the moonlight and gently shine in the morning, maybe because of the dew. He knew she hadn't been cold because she had her poncho on. The lentimas felt a powerful possessive feeling take hold of him at that moment. He cared for his Snow and now she was vulnerable, her sleep must be protected...
Andre shook his head clear. ''Whoa...that was way too intense... Stop messing with my head Iztaca...''He muttered, chuckling. It was then that he realized that he was still holding her hand.
Looking into the distance, the Lentimas relished the peace of this moment. The small nagging thought that he had to head back to camp to tend to his Pokemon as morning had come aside, he felt truly content and blessed.
''It's moments like these that I wish i could feel forever. Like time distording just enough so I can enjoy the moment longer...'' He sighed as he turned his gaze toward his white haired friend once again, losing himself in contemplating her.
Several minute passed, and Snow slowly started to stirr up. Her eyes fluttering open as she let an absolutely adorable yawn before fully opening her eyes, her mesmerizing, sleepy silver eyes gazing into Andre's. Smiling, she stared into his eyes.
Andre's gaze locked on Snow's, her eyes slowly blocking out everything else in his perception. They were so beautiful, intense, mesmerizing... It was magical. One of those moments where words were unnecessairy.
Their hands still entertwined, both teen's faces started to come closer, both smiling, together in their own little world. They inched closer and closer, until their noses were almost touching.
Fate could be a very cruel little thing sometimes...
As it was the exact moment that the whole little bunch burst out of the foliages.
''Ahh there you are...Heh?'' Shouted the older teen as he walked toward them, a small blue hatchling and a small golden furred Pokemon into.
The little group stopped as they saw what was happening. Aguade's head tilted in confusion. Gilla blushed and looked away. Vixen had a very confused look on her face, not knowing if she should squeal at such a cute moment or pounce on Andre to get him away from Snow... and Sven looking very very akward about walking in such a private moment.
Sadly, that was all it took to break the spell. Andre and Snow actually realized how close they were of each other and jumped back. Andre was blushing hard, not knowing where to put his eyes. Snow blinked a few times before realizing what had just happened and shot a very dark gaze toward Sven. If looks could kill, Sven's entire lineage, past and future would have eradicated without a trace.
The older poison type enthousiast chuckled nervously...
''My bad?''
Pueblo Leaf Grove was a big, busy city. Despite the patronyme of Pueblo, meaning village in the western native language this region used, this was basically a huge city that did not have anything to envy to places like Ninbasa city or Opelucid city. The trio had been happy to finally reach a big city after so much time spent in the wilderness. Both teens were drinking the sights like kids on a field trip. Well, granted, travelling around the region was basically one giant field trip, so he could definitely understand their amazement. Grand, tall buildings that seemed so tall that they would pierce the heavens. Many small shops selling all sort of equipments and goodies. Grand line shops like Elesa's secret or Korina's Dojo present in the boulevard they walked on to reach the Pokemon Center. It was interesting, amazing even. Sven chiuckled, discovery was the best part of a journey after all. The older teen had entrusted them with the etiquette when visiting a city like Pueblo Leaf Grove. Big Pokemon stayed in their balls, as to not create unnesessary destruction in the city. The least amount of Pokemon out so they could keep track of them. They were their trainers after all, they had a duty to keep an eye on them and any damage they do would be their legal responsability. It seemed rather evident but many new trainers were not completely aware of that fact, leaving many new trainers with rather...interesting situation on their hands. Sven did not want that to happen to his two companions so he gave them the run down.
Without any incident, they reached the Pokemon Center. To say the least...that center was huge. It was looking more like a huge hotel with a built in center than anything else. Inside the center was a general goods mart, a TM shop, a classic apparel shop, a small coffee shop, the cafeteria and many useful appliances that could accomodate such a transit hub. Here it seemed that trainers came and went, and it showed. As Sven went to the counter in order to reserve rooms for the trio, Andre and Snow were discussing what they had seen so far in the city.
''Have you seen those skyscrapers? They look humongus...'' Andre said as his starter Pokemon nodded in reply quickly. This was also a first for him too. ''Why do humans needs those big places anyway...It's not like they can fly...'' He replied in his own language. Andre tilted his head, only deducing around half of what he meant. ''Dunno, but it does save space...'' He replied.
Snow smiled. ''Yeah, but i am surprised to see shops from unova all the way here. I didn't miss that Elesa's secret on our way here.'' She said happily as the vixen in her arms rolled her eyes. ''Typical Snow...'' She mttered, jumping out of her arms and stretching.
Andre looked in wonder. ''That's true. Seems that we spent so much time with more rustic views that we forgot that some parts of this region were actually... more akin to ours.'' he said after stopping himself. he was about to say advanced and that would have been rather disrespectful. No matter what, he knew that the native's society was not ''Primitive''. Just different.
Snow picked that up and smiled. That just added one more reason on why she appreciated Andre as much. He was such a sensible guy.
Sven came back to them at that moment. ''I got your room keys and alla dat. This place is as huge as I remember. Now, what to do...'' He pondered before he received a phone call.
The two teens looked happy about their card keys and were about to look up to start discussing when they saw Sven's face go from jolly and relaxed to grave in an instant.
They both grew very worried.
''... I see...Damn ok...Alright, Will do... , Over.'' they heard him say as he closed the phone.
With the most relaxed face he could offer them, he answered their implicit question.
''Sorry kids, i'll have to leave you two alone for a few days. I received an important call and I need to look into it. You have your card keys and there is enough to do in this city for while so I am not worried about you two getting bored. Stay safe, out of trouble and keep your hands to yourselves heh!'' he chuckled when he saw theirs blushing faces.
The older teen quickly left, his gilla in tow after that.
Both teen got over their embarrasment and looked toward the exit where their friend had left. They hadn't missed the hint of tense that permeated their friend's voice.
''I hope he'll be okay...'' Snow said softly, Andre gently taking her hand in a soothing gesture. However, truth was that he was also worried.
''Me too... That was odd, even for him.''
Sven had been grateful that the teens had let him go without bombarding him with questions. He only hoped that they wouldn't try to follow him. The information that he had received was very concerning and they were the reason why he was the one called for it.
''Ah shit, there we go again...'' Was what he muttered when he left the city as he withnessed the ordeal.
