Three years have passed. Eren was nearing the half-time of his training. Over these years, Rukia's anger and detest towards him only increased. She couldn't stand a man like him becoming a Shinigami in the first place. Moreover, his growing power in training and number of people who admire him only made her even more angry, thinking that he didn't deserve any of this. It didn't help that her plan to make him quit all of this failed to have its effect.
Although Soi-Fon, Unohana and Yoruichi still don't have the best opinion of him, they still began to develop a sort of respect for him, at least for withstanding an unprecedented, gruesome training regimen like his.
Rukia shoved Eren's torn leave letter onto his face
"WHAT PART OF THE WORD NO DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND!" Rukia bellowed
"But…Captain…please…"
"NO MEANS NO. Forget a leave to go to the Hanten World, I'm not gonna even give you a leave to stay back in your quarters!" Rukia screamed
"But…I've been asking this for the last two and a half years captain, and this is my ninth letter…" Eren complained
She then got up from her seat and went up to him
"Look. You should be grateful to become a Shinigami in the first place after what you did! You may have been working your ass off to become a Shinigami for three years but that isn't change what you are! A murderer! A monster! A devil!" She screamed at him as she put her finger on his chest in an accusatory way.
Eren slowly gulped as he said
"I…I understand."
He then stepped out of the office, depressed as Soi Fon , Unohana, Rangiku, Yoruichi and Nemu entered the room, passing by him at the door. They heard all the screams of Rukia from the room. They went inside and sat down
"Someone's in a horrible mood today." Yoruichi said slowly
Rukia grunted as she folded her arms
"Can't believe that bastard had the nerve to ask me for a leave again! To the Hanten World that too! I rejected his letter eight times, and he still asks me again!"
"He's quite persistent, I'll admit that. No matter how much pain I showed him, he still comes back to train again " Soi Fon said.
"That's one annoying quality about him." Rukia slowly said
"He's a very intriguing man, that's for sure. His mysterious healing powers, the way he fights, everything is unlike anything I've ever seen before. Not to mention his entire past is shrouded in mystery. Till now, we don't have a single file about his life. Not even a fragment. Did he mention the reason why he wanted to visit the Hanten world?" Yoruichi said
"No. He just says he wants a leave. He doesn't specify anything. No reason, no specific time, nothing! He comes randomly one day and asks for a leave."
"I'm not going to lie Rukia, but you seem much harsher to him than any of the other Shinigami in the Soul Society. Do you have anything personal against people who commit genocide?" Rangiku asked
Rukia had her head bent down
"Y-Yes."
She then fisted her hands and slowly said
"It was…around…20 years ago, I guess. I was stationed near a small town near Osaka called Najimi. I used to be a school girl in disguise at the time. I made a few friends there, met good people…who were peaceful, carefree and didn't worry about a thing in the world. Five years after I was into the job, I graduated from the school there and the friends I had there promised to meet after a few years, after we had grown. One of them wanted to become a teacher, one of them wanted to take over their family's noodle shop, one of them wanted to start a restaurant, one of them wanted to go to the city and become an actress. I was then restationed to Karakura Town for the first time. Eight years later, I got a call from them asking to meet up. I was excited. I couldn't wait to see how much they'd grown. All through the journey that was all I could think of. But…when I went there, all I saw was blood. Dead bodies. Severed heads. It looked like a nightmare. It took me hours to find my friends' bodies…some with their arms chopped off. It was horrifying to look at them like that. It looked like the worst nightmare of my life.
It took me a year to get myself back from that shock. Soon after I got to know it was a massacre committed a man who took pleasure in killing. That fucking bastard was smiling while he was describing how he killed everyone. I wanted to kill him right away, but it was Captain Ukitake who, in the end convinced me to stop as would be sent to hell when he died. How could anyone just…kill another person and enjoy it like that?!" She said as slight tears came to her eyes
All of the women were taken aback by this revelation. They didn't know this episode of Rukia's life, mostly because they remembered her keeping to herself during that time, not even bothering to talk to anyone.
Rukia then wiped her tears and continued saying in her rage
"That's why I hate him…. 2 billion people…so many people with dreams and ambitions…and he just took them all away! Even if he manages to convince the whole Soul Syndicate that he's innocent, he'll still remain an unforgivable monster in my eyes."
Nemu, who looked in the direction Eren left, then said " Rukia-san…I think you're wrong about comparing him to the man who massacred Najimi. Eren-san…doesn't…look like a man who takes pleasure in killing…it…just doesn't fit him. And I trust Lord Enma's decision, so there must be something off about him…something we don't know about. I think I understand why he caught my father's interest."
Everyone looked at her for a few seconds. Then Yoruichi said
"If that were the case, then he'd be very clear about why he wants to go back to the Hanten World. He hasn't even specified a reason in the first place."
"For all I know, he would want to go see how much everyone's suffering because of him. How people remember his name after they lost so much because of him. It must give a sense of grandeur and pride to him. I've seen people do that before" Rukia said still with rage in her eyes.
"Besides, I took another look at his files…at least with all the information we have. Apparently his first murder of a person was at the age of 9. Now tell me." Unohana said
Rukia and the others looked at her in shock
"I wouldn't expect anything less from him. He committed genocide at the age of 19. It's pretty obvious that he'll kill someone at the age of 9." Rukia said
"I think you SHOULD give him this one leave. At least after that he won't bother you later on. He's given like…ten letters already. Even if not for that, at least do it to get him off our head for a while. At this point, both of us are getting tired of training him. " Soi-Fon said
"But still…he doesn't deserve it." Rukia gritted
"At least give him a hard offer. An offer that he has to think about 10 times before taking it. Regardless of whether he takes it or not, he'll not bother you with it anymore." Yoruichi suggested
"Hmm…I can consider that." Rukia said as she put her hand on her chin in thought.
