AN: Sooo... this'll be different.
What you're about to read is NON-CANON to the rest of these stories. This takes place in an alternate universe and should be treated as such. Also, this isn't as fluffy as the others and is a bit more... well, sad. Enjoy!
When Babs was told that she and her family were moving to Metropolis, she was dismayed. Gotham was her home: the place where she grew up, the place where she met Harleen, the place with Batman! In spite of all her protesting, she couldn't convince her dad, and they were gone in a couple of days. Throughout most of the car journey there, Babs was hoping that they'd be something, anything, that would make her dad change his mind and go back to Gotham.
But now, she wanted anything but to go back to Gotham.
Just a few days ago, Dad had made an announcement: he had landed a job as an architect. It paid good, really good in fact. However, there was a catch. He had to operate in Gotham. Ergo, they had to move back to Gotham.
Had this happened, like, a few hours once they had gotten into Metropolis, she would have been happy. But when she got the news, she practically collapsed from the shock.
She couldn't leave Metropolis. She couldn't! Metropolis was the place where she became one of the Super Hero Girls! They protected the city and they were all a vital part of Starro not pounding the city into starfish stew or something. She and the girls complimented each other. Heck, they had to get Catwoman of all people to help them on one of their missions when she was unavailable. They needed each other.
But the hero thing was merely a secondary thing, at least on a personal level. The girls weren't just her teammates. They were friends. She didn't want to leave them. Diana, with her energy and determination, Karen, with her intellect and helpful nature, Jess, with her steadfastness and welcoming presence, Zee, with her great magic… They were all special to her. She couldn't leave them.
And Harleen was also her best friend. Leaving her once was bad enough, but twice was like a cruel joke. Strangely enough, though, Harleen didn't seem too choked up about the news. She just said that she'd convince her parents… Whatever that meant.
Then there was Kara. Her girlfriend. She knew about long-distance relationships, but she and Kara worked best together. It was always nice seeing her, listening to her music, eating together, fighting crime and exchanging banter together… The idea of leaving her best friends already made her chest ache. Leaving Kara made her chest feel like it was being squeezed into dust.
When she finally worked up the strength to break the news at her house, it didn't go over too great. Karen and Jess were sad, with Jess even hugging her. Diana was shocked, offering several ways for Babs to 'convince' her dad to let her stay, none of which seemed plausible. Zee was also pretty downcast over the news, offering to try and put on a show for her at her going-away party (which Babs admittedly accepted). And Kara… was just blank. Before she broke the news, she was just kind of strumming a guitar with a smile. But as soon as Babs said the words 'I'm moving back to Gotham', she just stopped and stared at her with a small frown. When Babs tried talking to her, Kara just stood up and walked out, without saying a word.
The next few days weren't much better between her and Kara. Sure, they still hung out and had dates, but they were always that bit more… uncomfortable to put it mildly. The knowledge that such a major change was about to occur was not easily ignorable. Last night, their dinner date at Sweet Justice was mostly quiet, with Kara offering excuses for Babs to convince her dad to stay. Babs, however, had practically tried every excuse under the sun. She couldn't tell him she was Batgirl, so a good few excuses were gone immediately. When they parted ways, Babs could have swore that she had seen tears in Kara's eyes before she walked away.
Now, Babs stood in the middle of her going-away party. A few days beforehand, after Dad had announced they were moving back to their old place, Mom had organised a party. All her friends were invited: the Super Hero Girls, Barry, the Invinca-Bros, Harleen, and Tatsu. Mom had set up all of the activities and they were all going at them. Babs, meanwhile, was just kind of observing everything at the moment. Before that though, she had talked with a few guests, and even had a full-on chat with Barry, in which he told her she was one of the best patrons at Sweet Justice. She also played a few games with the girls and Harleen. Even then, however, Kara still didn't say anything.
Babs jumped a little when she felt a hand be placed on her shoulder. Whipping around, she saw Diana standing before her, holding a wrapped gift that was poorly hidden behind her back.
"Oh, hi Diana!" Babs said with a smile. Diana smiled as well and gave her a small wave.
"Hello, Babs. I must say, this party is very lively." She looked around. "Not surprising, though. You are lively."
Babs chuckled. "Yeah!" She grabbed a cup of punch and sipped it. "Speaking of which, what's that?"
Diana's eyes widened. "Um…" She hid the present better, her smile widening out of nervousness. "There is no present! Certainly not one I intend to give you near the end of this…" She soon trailed off and huffed. "Well, I suppose the surprise is ruined." She handed it to Babs. Babs was about to unwrap it when Diana grabbed her hand. She blinked.
"Whuh? Diana, what the heck?"
Diana leaned in to whisper. "We, as a team, decided to create a new outfit for you. We thought you might like a new outfit to wear sometimes while crime fighting in Gotham."
Babs smiled. "OMG, thanks!" While she obviously loved the classic Batgirl look, she was also thinking of trying out some new costumes. So, this was a treat. "I bet it's cool. And please tell me you kept the yellow bat-symbol. It ties the whole bat-thing together!"
Diana just giggled. "Of course." Then her brow furrowed. "Oh, yes. I just remembered."
Babs raised an eyebrow. "What?"
Diana folded her arms. "Kara told me to tell you to meet her in your room at 10:30. It is now…" She looked at her phone, squinting and tapping the black screen. "Wait, give me a second… How do you turn it on again?"
Babs just looked at her own phone. 10:28. Good a time as any.
"I got it, Di." She handed her the present. "Keep a hold of this for me." With that, she ran quickly into the house, rushing by Zee performing a 'saw-the-woman-in-half' trick with Karen. Grabbing a burrito that was left on the kitchen table, she started making her way up the stairs. Just as she shoved the whole thing into her mouth, she opened her door. And there she was. Kara, sitting cross-legged on her lower bunk.
Babs smiled before swallowing. "Kara. Hi."
Kara slowly turned to face her. "Hey, Babs." Her voice was soft, softer than she had ever heard from Kara. She got up off the bed and walked up to Babs. "So… last night in Metropolis, huh?"
Babs nodded as her smile faded. "Yeah. Not much fun leaving. Heck, even Ace doesn't seem too pleased."
A flicker of a smile crossed Kara's face. "Heh, and he and Krypto were getting along so well." She folded her arms. "Wait. Are you sure…"
Babs groaned. "Unfortunately, yeah. We even checked out our own place. It was nostalgic, sure, but… it didn't really feel 'right', per se."
Kara 'hmm'd to herself, before removing Babs's hood. She sighed laboriously, as if even looking at her was a task. "I'm sorry," she muttered.
Babs blinked rapidly. "What?"
Kara bit her lip. "I didn't handle this whole thing well, did I? I barely even talked to you."
Babs took Kara's hands before she could continue any further. "No, no. You didn't do anything wrong. I mean, I kind of did the same thing. No one's really to blame."
"Right!" Kara backed away. "Right." Her voice shook slightly, her arms wrapping around herself in a hugging motion.
"Babe, please don't be sad." Babs walked over to her.
Kara just snorted, but it didn't do too much to hide her sadness. "Why? Aren't I permitted to be sad that my girlfriend's leaving the city and I'm not going to be able to…" She stopped as she groaned in frustration.
At this point, Babs's heart felt as though it had shrivelled up into literal dust. "Kara, it's…"
Kara kicked the ground. "I'm… Look, I'm sorry. I'm just…" She kicked the ground again, but this time with enough force to knock a hole in the floor. Her eyes widened. "Oh, uh…"
In spite of everything, Babs grinned. "Hey, it's not like I need to fix it."
Kara chuckled. "Heh, good one." Then her eyes widened as she snapped her fingers. "Oh yeah!" Quickly pulling her foot out of the hole, shaking off any splinters, she crouched down and poked her head underneath. After a bit of rummaging, she pulled out another gift, this one rectangular.
Another present? Babs thought. I'm really getting spoiled tonight. But she wasn't just going to reject it.
"Huh." She took the gift out of Kara's hands. "Is this something to do with the outfit you worked on?"
Kara shook her head. "Uh, no. I didn't actually work on the costume. I was putting this together. I…" She swallowed. "I hope you like it."
Babs didn't have to be told once. She quickly ripped off the paper. When she saw what it was, she just stopped and stared at the cover. It was a book. One that had a yellow and blue cover. But that wasn't what made her stop. It was the title.
YOU AND ME.
Babs looked up at Kara, who was smiling at her, not even attempting to hide her quivering lip. Some kind of feeling erupted in Babs's chest as she opened it up. On the first page, it was… a selfie from their first date. The two of them running and giving peace signs in front of the pier. Below it was a photo of them at the Lazarus Pit. She turned her attention to the next page, which had more photos of the two, like from Halloween, and even the guitar she had made for Kara, which had an arrow pointing at it with 'thank you so much!".
It was a scrapbook dedicated to the two of them.
Babs raised her head to look at Kara. Weird. It was getting a little blurry. "Y-You made this?" She choked out.
Kara just nodded. "Yeah. I wanted to make my gift… special. Like, really special. The others' gift was pretty good, but I wanted to do something else. And then I just… came up with it." She chuckled dryly. "I thought you'd like it. I mean, this way… You'd still have all the memories."
It had only gotten more blurry for Babs as she kept her gaze firmly fixed on Kara. She had done this. All for her. But she couldn't just break down. She needed to keep her cool. She didn't want to upset Kara, so she decided to just hold it in. But when the blurriness dissipated slightly as she placed the scrapbook on her desk, she saw two wet spots underneath Kara's eyes.
That was the breaking point. Babs ran into Kara and pulled her into the tightest hug she could muster as she let it all out.
"I'm going to miss you so mu-u-uch!" She wailed. She was barely intelligible thanks to her loud sobbing. She felt Kara return the hug, followed by the sound of her bursting into tears. She tried to say something, but all she could make out was "M… Me too." Something that only made Babs sob louder. The two soon fell onto the ground, still clinging onto each other, and still crying their eyes out.
After a few minutes, the two just lay on the ground. They may have stopped crying but they still held onto each other. Babs looked at Kara, whose eyes were puffy and face was flushed. She could only imagine she looked about the same.
"I… I wish I could stay." Her voice didn't sound right. Too raspy, with a strange kind of squeakiness to it. "I don't want to go."
Kara sniffled. "It's… It's fine." She wiped her face with her sleeve. "You'll be fine o-on your own. You're strong."
Babs just took Kara's hand. "I know. But, like…" She couldn't even finish before she made a sound akin to a strangled toad.
Kara just lifted her head up. "Babs, it's okay. I just want to say that…'' She swallowed. "You are quite possibly one of the best people of my life. And-and-and if there was ever a moment I made you doubt that, I'm sorry. I love you so much, honey."
Babs looked into her wide, tear-filled eyes. "I love you too, babe." With that, she placed her lips onto hers. The two just slowly melted into a make-out session. Babs didn't care about the taste of tears and snot on Kara's face. She just wanted to stay with her forever.
But such a thing looked impossible. And it broke her heart.
Poor girls. But don't worry. This is only part one of this mini-series. Stay tuned...
