After Mello blows up his base to escape from the Kira task force, his injuries force Matt and Linda to call Near for help. To get Mello hospital treatment, Near names Mello as his mate, much to both's dismay. While Mello heals in the hospital, Mello's team and the SPK are forced to work together to bring down Kira. Along the way, many new feelings are brought to light.
