It is a sleepless night for Kate. Anxious about her date the next day with Peter, she cannot sleep. She tries to tell herself that it is just a date, just going out with the boy she likes. While it is just that, her anxiety is over what she must confront Peter about: he allegedly kissed MJ, after he had hung out with Kate the first time. After having had a day of worrying about the impending conversation and the thought of what might be considered cheating, Kate is restless. Unable to sleep, at midnight, she ventures out into New York City to take a walk and calm her nerves. She bundles up and heads out, the below-freezing temperature chilling her to the bone.
In her anxiety, who else does she decide to call but Clint? With the time being so late, she knows there is a good chance that Clint does not pick up. As she walks on the sidewalk, she calls Clint, hopeful but doubtful. To her surprise, Clint picks up almost immediately.
Clint asks without greeting, "More relationship troubles?"
"How'd you know?" Kate responds.
"I read a book on teen girl psychology," Clint admits, sighing tiredly. "Figured it'd be good to deal with you and Lila."
Lila shouts from downstairs, "How about meet me where I'm at, instead of stereotyping me with every other girl?!"
Clint tells Kate, "Stereotypes is chapter five. I've got her under control."
Kate responds, "Okayyy, not sure what I think about this. Should I be flattered? Insulted? I'm 22, you know. I'm not a teenager."
"Anyone between the ages of twelve and twenty-four is a teenager," Clint says. "You'll understand when you're older."
"Maybe," Kate says back.
"Assuming you do have relationship troubles?" Clint asks. "I mean, at this point, I'd refer you to Laura, but she's sleeping. Not sure how much help a guy like me could be to a girl like you. Have you tried Jack yet?"
"Not yet," Kate says. "Should I?"
"Might as well," Clint says.
"Anyway," Kate redirects the conversation, "it's… funny, what's been going on." She chuckles uneasily. "So, I've gone out with Peter Parker and it was great, BUT then he went out with one of my friends, and she says they kissed, but she likes him, too, so I don't know if she's lying to keep me away or not, and if it's true, I don't know if I should just leave Peter Parker behind or not, 'cause I like him, but I don't want him cheating."
Clint sighs a good, long sigh. "Teenage drama," he mutters.
"What?" Kate reacts, having not heard Clint.
"So," Clint speaks up, "if it's a lie?"
"Cut ties with my friend and move on with Peter," Kate says.
"Okay, first off, that's a bad idea," Clint disapproves. "If this rival is your friend, you'll make up. Don't let one bad problem let you down, if you can. Second, what if this is the truth?"
"I don't know," Kate says. "I'd want to be with him and try to work things out, but I'd also be considered about his commitment. What do you think? This is why I'm calling. I don't know what I'd do, I really don't. Help. I mostly believe my friend, but I don't want it to be true and it almost sounds fake, anyway. Just… please help."
Clint's paternal instincts kick in when he hears Kate say help. He tells her, "Look, if this is true, if he really did kiss the other girl, then you should leave him. It's early enough that you won't be hurt for long, and clearly, to me, it seems like he's dating around. But see what he says. It's always possible there's more to this story than there appears to be on the surface."
"What do you mean," Kate responds, "that MJ— my friend— forced him to kiss her or something?"
"I'm not saying that," Clint replies. "I'm saying that they could've kissed for any number of reasons, if they kissed at all. Anyway, that's just my two cents. Obviously, it's up to you. If you're willing to bet on him, go ahead, just be wary of who he is and what he has planned, in terms of dating other people or the exclusivity of the relationship."
"Sure," Kate reacts. Wrapping up, she goes on, "If you don't mind me asking, why are you up at midnight?"
"Time zones," Clint says. "It's a little past eleven here."
"Oh, yeah," Kate realizes.
"Well, that," Clint explains, "and I can't sleep until all the kids are up, unless it's a special occasion like New Year's or something. Lila's been staying up later recently."
"I see," Kate says.
"What about you?" Clint asks. "Why are YOU up at midnight?"
"Couldn't sleep," Kate answers. "Thinking about tomorrow. That's when Peter and I are going out. We're going to the Statue of Liberty."
"That should be fun," Clint remarks, "if you guys can move past whatever did or didn't happen."
"Yeah, I hope so," Kate says.
"G'night, kid," Clint says, hanging up.
Kate looks at her phone and sees the 'call ended' message on the screen. "Good night, Clint," she says to herself. She puts her phone in her pocket and realizes just how chilly it is outside. Every breath she exhales looks like a cloud, hanging in the night air a few moments before dissipating, just like her anxiety has. She shivers, just now feeling the cold, but is warm inside. She feels better about the situation after talking with Clint. Her plan is this: if MJ lied, great, but try to make up with her. If MJ told the truth, then find out if Peter is dating around or if he just has commitment issues, or both. Find out WHY he and MJ kissed, if they did. So far, she likes Peter and does not want to split, so she is willing to forgive a little if the kiss was a one-time thing. Besides, she has never been in a romantic relationship like this before, so she is forgiving because she wants to have this.
At the same time, Peter is restless, too, but just because he is not tired. Rather, he is swinging through the streets as Spider-Man, looking out for crime in the dead of the New York night. As he thinks about what the next day holds with his date with Kate, he becomes more resolute in his plan to keep him and MJ's thing a secret until they have been broken up for a long enough time. Exactly how long that should be is hard to judge, but that is his plan nonetheless. With Kate on his mind and no crime in the immediate area, Peter swings by Kate's apartment building. Obviously, she is not there, but Peter does not know that. As far as he knows, she is sleeping inside, safe and sound. For a moment, he is perched on the edge of the roof of the building on the opposite of the street from the apartment, just staring at the apartment building. He sighs, hoping that the next date goes well, hoping that he can love Kate the way he loves MJ. Then, he notices Kate walking back, outside for some unknown reason past midnight. He then moves on, swinging away to find crime.
A couple blocks away, he actually DOES find crime. A team of four criminals, all with guns, are following behind a man in a tuxedo on his phone who walks down the sidewalk.
Peter knows he cannot take on four guys like that all at once. He cannot morally leave the situation alone, either. He gets out his phone and sends a quick email to Kate through a Spider-Man email account he never uses, hoping that she will see the message. It reads:
"Kate if u see this asap im on 53rd and central west, 4 guys with guns tailing innocent plz help courtesy your friendly neighborhood spiderman"
He tracks the bad guys and the man while on rooftops for a couple more blocks, moving away from Kate's apartment, when he gets an email back from Kate. It reads very simply:
"Omw. I have bow + arrows. R u still at 53rd and central west"
Peter quickly replies, typing as fast as his thumbs will let him:
"At central west and 64th now. On top of building. Bad guys moving away from u apartment"
He does not get a reply, so he assumes Kate is on her way.
Meanwhile, the tuxedo man hangs up. This is when the criminals make their move. They quickly run up and surround the man, holding their pistols and demanding money.
"We know you have it!" One declares.
"Give us the money!" Another demands.
"W—w—w—what money…?" The tuxedo man shows his fear.
"Fast!" A third bad guy is concerned. "People might show up!"
Peter is about ready to shoot webs from the rooftop two stories up and handle the situation himself when he spots Kate approaching with her bow drawn and arrow ready to fire. She is still about a block away. Peter waves a little to get her attention and gestures for her to shoot.
By now, the bad guys start to beat up the tuxedo man.
Kate shakes her head and approaches a little faster, seeing the situation more clearly ahead of her. She glances up to Peter for a sign.
Peter motions for her to shoot again.
None of the bad guys notice Kate approaching; they are too busy trying to get money from the tuxedo man.
Kate is now one-half block away. She shoots the arrow at the back of the bad guy closest to her, hitting him squarely in the middle of his back. As he cries out in pain and falls down, the other three bad guys point their guns at Kate.
"You want no part in this!" One shouts to Kate.
Kate gets another arrow ready. "Actually, I kinda do," she replies. "Not to brag or anything, but I did help take down the Tracksuit Mafia."
At the same time as Kate unintentionally stalls, Peter expertly shoots webs at two of the bad guys. The webs land on their guns, and Peter pulls them away. This gets the attention of the one man who still has his gun. Distracted, he does not see Kate fire an arrow at him that hits him in the shoulder of the arm holding the gun. He drops the gun and shouts in hurt.
The tuxedo man, from his position on the ground, reaches out and grabs the ankles of the two men whose guns were stolen, bringing them to the ground with him.
Now, Kate charges the men and Peter crawls down the wall of the building and reaches the bottom. Peter shoots webs around the un-arrowed bad guys, while Kate points her arrow alternatingly at the two downed men she has shot. Peter ties those men up as well, and helps tuxedo man to his feet.
Peter asks tuxedo man, "You got a phone on you?"
The man nods and grabs his phone from an inner pocket of his outer jacket.
"Call the police," Peter commands. "These guys stay here with you till the police come. They'll take care of medics."
Tuxedo man says, "I can't thank you enough. If it wasn't for your inspiring bravery, I wouldn't have had the guts to help you out."
Kate interjects, "Well, you did."
Peter says, "With that, I'm going to take my colleague here home."
Kate gestures with her head for Peter to come with her down the sidewalk.
Peter ignores this and puts his left arm around Kate's waist, using his right hand to shoot webs up and ahead, and he swings with Kate in his arm for four blocks back to her apartment.
The whole time, Kate is proclaiming things like "WHOO-HOO!" and "THIS IS AWESOME!"
Peter sets Kate down at her feet at the entrance to the apartment. Peter has had his mask on the whole time.
Kate says meekly, "You called."
"I needed help," Peter replies, "and you were in the area. Lucky for me and tuxedo guy, you were awake. Or maybe you weren't. I'm so sorry if I woke you up."
"No, it's cool," Kate says. "It's funny, though. Your voice is familiar."
Peter becomes scared about his identity. "Is it?" He asks with a deeper-sounding voice.
"I don't know," Kate responds. "I feel like I've heard it since we last met."
"I doubt it," Peter says. He lies, "I haven't seen you since that night."
"That's fair," Kate says. "I guess I've just had someone on my mind and now I'm hearing him everywhere or something."
Peter knows that that person is him. His heart flutters.
Kate squints into Spider-Man's eyes, trying to see through the material. She cannot. "You're not gonna tell me who you are, are you?" She asks.
"Uh, nope," Peter says.
"Fair enough," Kate replies. She half-nods and half-smiles. "See you 'round, Spider-Man." She goes inside her apartment building, calmed by her talk with Clint and by getting some energy out. She is able to fall asleep quickly.
Peter continues scouring the city for crime. It is 1:30AM before he is back at his apartment. He, too, falls asleep easily, knowing he has to, so he can be well-rested for the date ahead.
