Kate begins to exclaim, "SH—"
"Shoot him!" Peter yells.
Venom leaps up, going straight upwards with tremendous power and force.
Kate shoots the arrow at Venom's face, aiming for his right eye. She hits it perfectly, and Venom goes back down to the lower rooftop.
Peter tells Kate, "We've got to stop him. He's going to try to kill me."
"Is that the giant black monster?" Kate asks frantically, "or is that Yelena?"
"Whatever it is, we've got to stop it," Peter replies.
Venom pulls the arrow out of his eye, his alien nature healing him almost instantaneously. He throws a couple ropes of Venom-extension up at the next rooftop and slingshots himself up.
Kate fires another arrow at Venom, hitting him in the chest.
Venom just ignores it and lands on the rooftop, throwing two more ropes of Venom-extension at Kate, grabbing her shoulders with it. He brings Kate to himself to, well, rip her head off.
Peter lunges for the Venom-extension and pulls on it, breaking it.
Kate slams down on the gritty rooftop face-first. She groans and tries to prop herself up, but is slow to do so. Her face feels like someone lit it on fire.
Quickly, Peter shoots webs at Venom's eyes to temporarily distract the hideous monster. Then, he grabs Kate, putting his arm around her waist, and shoots a web off into the distance, swinging away down the street and leaving Venom behind him.
Kate yells at him, sounding nasal, "What are you doing?! We had him! I was getting up!"
Peter keeps swinging webs, getting further and further from Venom, going nowhere specifically, just going fast. He ignores Kate.
After a few minutes of swinging, Peter feels he must have swung halfway around the world. In reality, they are now in a quiet part of town, and Peter stops swinging, letting himself and Kate down on the ground. He takes off his mask and now, for the first time since Kate was slammed, sees her face. She has small cuts on her forehead and cheeks, and her nose is bleeding. Additionally, her nose is badly bruised, as is her forehead. She does not look good.
He asks Kate, "Are you okay? Is it all just on the surface?"
Now that there is a quiet moment, Kate can actually feel the pain. Everything hurts, especially her nose. She puts her hands over her nose to try to control the pain and bleeding, hardly effective at either. She knows what happened without an official diagnosis. "Well," she says, sounding annoyed and speaking nasally, "my nose is broken. Gonna have to go to the hospital for that, but I can take myself. I've broken my nose before.
"Peter, why didn't you let us stay and fight?"
Peter stares blankly into nothingness. He murmurs, "This is why I stay away from people."
"Huh?" Kate reacts.
Peter sighs heavily and looks Kate in the eyes. He shakes his head slowly. "This is why I stayed away from people for so long, and kept this all a secret from you. Now you're hurt, because of me being Spider-Man."
"Peter," Kate replies, "it's not like I was being held hostage. You asked me for help."
"I shouldn't have," Peter says. "You're too good of a person to have this kind of life. Fighting people. That's my job. My responsibility. And now, because of me going to you too quickly for help, you're hurt."
"I came to he voluntarily," Kate says, "and if I didn't want to, I would've said no."
"You only said yes because you know me," Peter says. "If you didn't know me, you wouldn't be hurt. Yeah, it's not like you're life is in danger this very second or anything, or like you're going to have to be hooked up to a ventilator. But this is a warning. A warning of what could come if my identity gets out there. Of what could come to other people. To you. This is a warning of what could happen to you in the future, if you try to fight Spider-Man's battles, even on your own free will. It's a warning to me to stay away from other people, so no one gets hurt.
"It's over, Kate."
Peter puts out his hand to shoot a web.
Kate responds, "Peter, what? Let's try to work this out. Let's—"
"I just DID work it out," Peter replies. "Whether you like it or not, this is what it's come to. If you try to fight Spider-Man's battles, you'll get hurt, cause you're not Spider-Man."
"You'll get hurt, too," Kate replies desperately, "so I need to be there to help you. I need to help Spider-Man and Peter Parker. Face it, you need me!"
"Not as much as you DON'T need me," Peter says.
"What about our kiss?" Kate asks, really upset. "Twice? Yesterday? Earlier today? Don't you remember? I know you felt what I felt. That was love!"
Peter, frustrated at Kate's persistence, yells, "Don't you get it, Kate?! It's BECAUSE I love you that I'm pushing you away! It's for your own safety! Today it's a broken nose, what next, you die?!" He sighs.
Then, he mumbles, "It's done. See ya 'round."
Peter shoots a web to a building in the distance in the direction of Venom, and in one fast motion, as fast as he left Kate in their relationship, he swings away, leaving Kate behind in the dark streets of New York, lit only by the moon and a few lights. There is a little light there, unlike her heart, which, for now, has turned dark.
Just like that, it is over.
Peter knows he is being conservative; but why risk anything to Kate? This is the EXACT thing he has tried so hard to avoid; now that it has come, he cannot let anything else happen to Kate. The only option for her safety is for him to stay away from her. This is all on him. If he had not reached out, Kate would be safe right now. If he had just done the right thing, she would not be hurt. Did he want to break up with Kate? No. That is the second-to-last thing he wants. The last thing he wants, though, is for Kate to be hurt because of him. At the moment, it is better to break her heart now and early, rather than her actually being broken later. Now, to get back at the one who hurt Kate, he is going to find Venom and kill him.
Kate is more confused than heartbroken, and more hurt than either, both emotionally and physically. Peter just left her. Just like that. She GETS why, but thinks Peter should not be so conservative about the situation. She needs to talk to him. To her, it is not over. First, she decides, she needs to take care of her nose. Then, once emotions have calmed down, she will reach out to him and hope he responds.
Meanwhile, his hands free and his mind angry at Venom for hurting Kate, Peter goes back to find Venom and deal with him. However, when he reaches the rooftop where Venom was, no one is there. However, off in the distance on the street twelve stories below, too far away to be seen, he can hear a woman talking but cannot tell what she is saying. He sneaks closer to the voice, because he can hear the voice talking, but no responses.
The woman is Yelena. She is currently in control. She tells Venom, "Look, things just aren't working out between us. We're going to have to separate."
Venom replies, "But Yelena, things were going so well up till now!" He makes his face come out of the back of her neck and come around to face her. "Was it something I did?"
Yelena scoffs. "Something you did? You tried to kill Spider-Man!"
"He deserves it!" Venom declares. "If it wasn't for him—"
"No," Yelena interrupts, "the only person who deserved death was Mysterio. He tried to kill people, then accidentally killed himself while trying to kill Spider-Man. Add up the numbers and see this for yourself!"
Venom sighs. "I know, you're right. I just get so twisted, and my mind so warped. I think we are both right here."
"Yeah, you DO get warped," Yelena comments.
Venom gets an idea. "Say, there wouldn't happen to be more Widows in Mexico, would there? I have a… brother there, if you will. An extension of myself, and I am an extension of another of myself. We are all Venom. All extensions. All separate, all sentient. I think."
"Yeah, there's a couple there," Yelena says. "I guess we're going to Mexico." She puts her hands in her pockets and starts walking.
Peter could hear Venom when he showed himself. He heard Venom and Yelena talk of Mexico and he decides to track them, follow them from a distance. He can get away from Kate and maybe take down a serious villainous faction. The important thing is keeping danger away from Kate. That is what he wants, and why he broke up with her.
The only other solution he can think of is casting another spell to make everyone forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. He figures all he has to do is get into Kamar Taj. With this idea in the back of his mind, and no reason to go to sleep, he follows Yelena from a distance, staying in the shadows. The shadows are where he should have kept his identity from Kate. He did not, and now, he must form a new plan for everything.
