I became aware of my surrounding as they faded into view. I was in Gringotts Bank.
Lines of witches and wizards stood, some patiently waiting, some... less patient. Robes swooshed and fluttered as the wearers stepped up to the teller, each demanding their needs be seen to this instant.
I, having been a poor student working at the customer service desk and fast food, will never understand why people think being rude and snippy will get them what they want faster or better. I can guarantee I took my time on more than one occasion when someone snapped at me that they were in a hurry.
I stepped into the nearest line, smiling at the teller when it was finally my turn.
"Hello Master Goblin, how are you today?"
The goblin started but peered down at my admittedly short form. "I am well, how may I help you?"
Ignoring the fact he did not ask how I was doing today, I rocked up on my toes a bit, playing up the image of a little girl- for now.
"Well, I am an orphan, and I am hoping to take an inheritance test to see if I have any living relatives left?"
"An inheritance test will cost ten Galleons," he replied, looking skeptical I could pay.
"Alright." I pulled out the handful of gold coins from my pocket.
The goblin blinked. "Follow me." He put up a sign declaring his line temporarily closed, then led me down a hall to a small office. He turned and disappeared before I could thank him.
Turning back to the desk, the only piece of furniture in the room, and the goblin sitting stoically behind it, I nodded.
We repeated pleasantries, then the goblin produced a sheet of parchment, a knife, and a potion.
"You must add your genetic material to the potion, then we pour it on the parchment and it will give us your results."
I nodded, took the potion bottle, removed the cap, and spit into it, then upended it over the parchment.
The goblin, Hookfang, as the placard on the wall stated, blinked, then asked, "why would you do that?"
"Genetic material, DNA right? Doesn't just have to be blood."
Hookfang laughed. "Well thought, little witch. Most wizards are unaware of this fact, and we are more than willing to let the fools cut themselves until they learn to accept new knowledge. Now, your results."
He handed over the parchment with a grin.

I skimmed the sheet, nodding as I took in the information. "Looks like one of my parents had a flair for historic names, although it fits with the House I inherited it seems."
I handed it back to Hookfang, watching in amusement as his eyebrows rose.
"Heir Emrys? There hasn't been an heir chosen by magic since the death of Merlin himself. Do you know anything about the history of this house?"
Of course, I did. Kronos and I had created it just moments before they placed me here. However, as a supposed orphan who was not taught by her parents, (seeing how they were dead) I couldn't very well admit to that knowledge. At least not until I got some real access to my money and a trip to the bookstore.
"Heir Emrys, the House of Emrys is older than Hogwarts itself. Older than the Wizengamot, to be more direct. The House of Emrys used to rule wizarding Britain, and the Wizengamot was established when the Heir at the time, Merlin's son Taliesin, was murdered before he could take up the throne. It was written that if Magic herself ever chose a new heir for the house, he or she could resume their role as ruler, and the Wizengamot would be dissolved. You are now in charge of all wizarding Britain."
"Right. That's a lot. Okay, do you inform the current wizard authority that I exist, or is that something I do?"
Hookfang sighed. "I am responsible for filing the paperwork at the Ministery of Magic. You will be called before the Wizengamot to formally dissolve it, and put your new system in place. I can delay filing for 24 hours, giving you time to plan a few things out. I assume you are set to attend Hogwarts? I recommend choosing advisors quickly to speak on your behalf whilst at school. You will also require a security detail, and at least one house-elf to prepare your meals to protect against poisoning."
I nodded, remaining quiet as though I was processing this new information. "Thank you, I would appreciate those 24 hours. Is there anything else or may I be taken to my vault? I would like to pick up a few books on running a country it seems."
Hookfang gave a barking laugh at my last sentence. "I would recommend filing for emancipation whilst you are here, or else when you attend Hogwarts your headmaster will become your magical guardian, and responsible for running your affairs. The current headmaster... I think you should choose your own proxies is all."
I jumped, I had forgotten. Dumbledore would definitely meddle. "Yes, please file those papers. Is there anything requiring my signature?"
The rest of the meeting was signing line after line and then a trip down to my vault. I had shopping to do.
