"Hannah, what do you know about Norse mythology? More specifically, what do you know about Loki?" I asked as I was lying on her bed. My laptop was open with many pages on Loki, but most of them were about the New York incident and not really about him. So, none of the pages were much help.
"Loki is Thor's brother, the God of Mischief, and the Lord of tricks and lies. He is actually the son of Laufey and the rightful heir to the throne of Jotunheim. Odin adopted him in hopes of bringing peace to the two planets one day," Hannah says as she was getting ready to go out with Jason. I was surprised she knew that much. I mean, she has always been a history nerd. Still, she was more into Greek and Roman mythology than Norse mythology. "Why do you want to know?"
I shrugged, "We were talking about what happened in New York City in 2012 while I was working, and I was wondering what the actual story to him was." I wanted to tell her the truth. I wanted to tell her that I agreed to talk to him. He said that I was the only person he wanted to talk to even though he only saw me for a short second. However, I couldn't. I have to protect her from the danger of S.H.I.E.L.D. I have to make sure Loki doesn't use anyone I care about against me. I don't want to hurt them.
"Why were you talking about him of all people? Loki is a monster for what he did. Then again, without him, we might not have the Avengers," Hannah rambled on. Of course, here comes the Avengers fangirl. She is more in love with the Avengers than Jason, or at least that is what it feels like. Ever since Tony Stark has announced that he was Iron Man years ago, Hannah has kept on top of all the superhero knowledge that she can. Iron Man is definitely her favorite, though I don't see why.
"No reason. Someone just brought it up, and I wanted to know at least a little of his back story. I'm trying to understand why he did what he did."
"Are you into true crime again? Remember last time you tried to get into true crime and ended up not sleeping because you psyched yourself out because you thought someone was coming to murder you."
"It's nothing like that," I argued. Of course, Hannah would mention something that would embarrass me like that. "Well, maybe it's like that. I just like knowing why people do things that they do. Why do serial killers kill, and how do they pick their victims? Why did Loki destroy New York City? What happened in their life leads up to moments like that?"
"You should've studied psychology instead of biomedical engineering. For someone who claims that you don't like people, you sure are fascinated by them," Hannah says as she finishes up her makeup.
I laughed, "I wouldn't have lasted long if I studied psychology. There are too many emotions and interactions with people. I would have hated every second of it."
"But yet you are fascinated by serial killers?"
"Being fascinated enough to watch true crime documentaries to see why they do what they do is completely different than actually studying them."
"Yeah, whatever," Hannah says sarcastically. I could tell that she was freaking out on the inside because Jason would be at our apartment soon, and Hannah still isn't ready. I don't know why she is freaking out. Jason was used to her never being prepared for their dates at all. After a few years of dating, Jason has picked up the fact that Hannah waits until the last minute to get ready and rushes through everything.
A few minutes later, our buzzer goes off, and Hannah asks, "Can you get that? I can't let Jason see me like this."
"You guys have been dating for a few years," I said as I placed my laptop on Hannah's bed. I started to get up so I could let Jason in. "I don't understand what the big deal is. He had seen you when you looked homeless before."
"You'll understand when you find a guy who you love and adore," she says. I rolled my eyes at her as I clicked the button to let Jason in. Dating wasn't ever really my thing. Sure, I had a few flings here and there, but they were never serious. There was one exception, but we don't talk about it.
"She's picking out an outfit," I tell Jason when he walks into our apartment. I plopped myself on our couch and started scrolling on my phone.
"So, she is ahead of schedule," Jason joked as he took the spot next to me. I laughed at his joke even though Hannah would have scolded us if she heard it. "You know you can come with us if you want. You don't always have to hide out in the apartment every time Hannah, and I go out. You're our friend, after all."
I scoffed, "As much as I would love to third wheel for you guys, I would prefer to be in the comfort of my apartment doing things I enjoy."
"You don't enjoy hanging out with your two best friends?"
"Not when they are on dates. I love you both dearly but being the third wheel for you two makes me want to shoot myself."
"What are you going to do that is so much better than hanging out with us?" Jason asked.
"She is researching about Loki and probably going to end up on a true crime kick again," Hannah says as she comes out of her room. She handed me the laptop that I left in her room. Hannah then went over and gave Jason a quick peck on the lips causing me to gag teasingly. "Hey, babe. Sorry for the wait."
Jason smiled, "It's okay. I didn't have to wait long. Why is Ara researching Loki?" Of course, he was playing dumb. Jason knew precisely why I was doing this, but as I've said before, we can't let Hannah know what is exactly going on. We were doing this to protect her.
"Because we were talking about what happened in 2012, and I'm trying to see what caused Loki to do what he did," I sighed. Repeating myself was getting really old, really quick. However, I had to do it. I had to keep up the facade.
"Is this like when you got into true crime because you wanted to know why serial killers did what they did?" Jason asked.
I groaned, "Why is that the first thing you guys bring up? It is perfectly normal to find true crime and serial killers interesting."
"Because you aren't a middle-aged wine mom who has nothing better to do with your life," Hannah says. I rolled my eyes as I continued to go through page by page about Loki I could find. Hannah turned to Jason. "We should get going so we aren't late." Jason nodded.
"Don't forget your key. I'm going to lock up once you guys are gone," I said as Jason and Hannah walked out the door. Once they left, I curled up in a ball and continued to read more about Loki. I had to know about his life. I needed to understand what happened to him to make Loki become the villain.
