Chapter 2
"Okay guys the game is about to start," Darry announces trying to control the rowdy group of greasers as they sat on the bleachers at Ponyboys first ever t-ball game. Darry had given into his baby brothers request to play ball when he brought home a flyer from school. Darry was almost regretting bringing everyone.
"Man, Soda you were wrong! There are no smoking hot single babes here, " Steve declares loudly earning some stares from other parents. Darry shot Steve a warning look. Soda just shakes his head at his best friends winking towards the concession stand where a girl around their ages was working.
"There isn't nothing wrong with a foxy older lady, " Two-Bit wises off not heeding Darry's warning glares earning himself a smack upside the head. Two-Bit grins innocently back at Darry. Two-Bit sat pondering rather he should try and get her number.
"Shut up idiot! The game is starting," Dally retorts watching as Pony starts off his teams line up.
"Let's go Kiddo," "Let's GO Pony," "Knock it out of the park," Cheers were being yelled as Pony's coach lined him up at the tee. Pony turned around and gave his brothers and friends a quick wave and grin before turning back to the ball.
"Play ball," The ump calls signaling for Pony to hit. Pony swings his bat spinning in a full circle before landing on his bottom. Laughs could be heard from other parents.
"Y'all better shut the fuck up," Dallas shouts out towards the other parents. "He is just a fuckin kid," he growls his warning.
Calm down Dal, they are not laughing to ne mean. There laughing as its cute," Johnny tells his shyly resting a hand on Dallas shoulder. Dallas took a deep breath and turned back to the game.
"Play Ball," the ump calls again. This time Pony makes contact sending the ball to the pitcher.
"Run Ponyboy," Darry yells as his brother watched the ball momentarily. As soon as Pony took off running, he had not realized he was running the wrong way. Instead of first Pony ran to third base. The other team managed to get the ball and tag first.
"Batters out," the ump calls. Pony's coach on third speaks to Pony before Pony heads back to the dugout,
"What the hell is wrong with you? Are you blind? How dare you call him out! You're a no-good worthless piece of sh," Dally started before Darry had to literally cover his mouth as again everyone's attention was on them.
"Dallas he was out," Darry tells his trying to hide his own embarrassment.
"Whatever," Dallas says dramatically as he leans back into the bleachers. The ump looked over at them to make sure no drama would start before continuing the inning. Pony's team scored four runs before the other team managed three outs.
When Pony's team took the field, Pony was playing center field. As soon as got in the field Pony immediately started playing in the grass. Pony ignored everyone calling for him to pay attention. He was too busy admiring the rollie polly he had found. That is until he heard the bat hit the ball.
As soon as he heard it, he took off running towards the ball. It was hit down the third base line. Pony ran fast and got the ball before the infielders but was immediately dog piled by his team members who were fighting to get the ball.
Darry's face paled as he watched the whole dog pile of kid's land on top of his brother. He never knew baseball could be such a contact sport. The batter scored a home run before the ump could call times. As soon as times was called the coaches were out on the field sending boys back to their spots. Atlas, Ponyboy emerged from the pile with the proudest grin holding out the ball before throwing it home to the other coach.
"Well at least he is tough, " Soda retorts grinning at the kids. The rest of the inning was much the same. Pony was always playing in either dirt or sand until the ball was hit. Somehow the kid always managed to get to the ball no matter where it is at.
The next time Ponyboy came up to bat he hit the ball on the first try. This time he managed to run to first base. Once he reached first, he kept running despite his base coaches demands to stay at first. While he ran the pitcher ran him down and tagged him, the pitcher was a lot bigger than Pony and the tag caused Pony to lose his balance and fall face first into the dirt.
"Why you little bastard. Letting him push him like that," Dallas yelled. Darry's face lit up in embarrassment, but his concern was for his brother. They watched as his coaches ran to him. They helped him up and were talking to him. Pony pulled his helmet off and much to everyone's relief he was smiling.
"Damn kids pretty tough," Two-bit claims taking a swig of his special coke be brought,
"Damn straight he is. That is because he is a Curtis and we are the bomb dot com," Soda retorts.
"Soda you're an idiot," Steve tells him playfully shoving him. Soda was right though Curtis's were tough. Everyone applauded as Pony walked off the field.
It did not take long before Pony's team was back on the field. This time the coach out Pony as catcher. "Now Ponyboy you stay in this area. At the end of every play the ball comes back here, okay?" The coach explained to him. Pony nods so the coach walks off to assist other kids.
Pony turns to the bleachers. "Hi Soda! Hi Darry! Hi Steve! Hi Dally! HI Johnny! Hi Two-Bit," Ponyboy chirps happily at the backstop.
"Hi Baby. You need to turn around and pay attention," Soda tells him sweetly, Pony smiles at them again before turning around. Pony stands behind the batter as he sets up.
"Hi batter! Hit hard," Pony tells his as the other kid sets up to bat.
"Thanks," Number tells him before he swings hitting the ball into outfield.
"Woo hoo! Go number 10" Pony cheers jumping up and down cheering, Pony watched as the kid rounded third headed towards home and the ball nowhere close to him. Pony stands beside the plate holding his hand out to high five the batter as he ran in, Number ten returned the high five as he scored his run.
"That was a super good hit," Pony tells him before running towards the ball that had now been thrown into him. Once he got the ball, he handed it over to the ump.
"Hey ump I'm Ponyboy. What is your name? " Pony asks innocently,
"Zach," the umpire replies finding the little catcher to be adorable. The ump hands the ball to eh coach as next batter gets set up.
"Hi Zach. I am five. How about you?" the child quizzes.
"Hey Pony take a step back, so you don't get hit by the bat. " Pony did as he was told but kept his back turned to the batter. Zach decided to turn Pony to the right direction.
"Okay Pony stand here and watch for the ball," the ump instructs before calling out play ball.
Pony watches the ball barely go in front of the tee. Pony rushes to it, "Tag the runner," the coach yells. Pony sped off towards phone tagging the runner before he reached the base. Ponyboy only knew the word tag because of practice.
Pony went back to the plate carrying the ball as people from his team cheered. He had no idea why the other coach made the batter leave the field or why people cheered. He just knew tag means touch the runner. When he got back to the ump, he hands him the ball,
"I can sing my red song. Can you? Pony asks Zach before he starts into singing.
"R-E-D Red! R-E-D ref! I can spell red! I can spell red. Fire trucks are red! Stops
signs are too, R-E=D! R-E-D" Pony sang loudly earning a few laughs and smiles.
The games ended right at game time. The gang had to admit this was the most amusing sporting event they had ever attended and the craziest killed belonged to them.
"Did ta see me? Did y'all see me? " Pony asks excitedly running to them carrying his batting bag. "I hit the ball and ran. Oh, and there is a big rollie poly in the grass," the youngster continues before anyone can answer.
"You did awesome," Soda tells him before anyone else could respond. Pony lifted his arms up for Soda to pick him up. That is one thing about Pony he loved to be carried.
"Here Pony let me have your bag," Darry says taking the bag from his little brother. Soda quickly obliged and lifted his brother up giving him a kiss on top of his head.
"Good game Ponyboy," the coach tells him with a wave as they walk past the group of guys.
"Thanks," Pony calls back.
"Soda did you see me tag? I touched the kid. That means I tagged the kid," Pony yells him explaining it to his older brother.
"Really? You did awesome that was the best tag I ever saw," Soda smiles. Soda carried his brother to the truck.
Pony was wired when they arrived back to the house. "Pony get dressed for bed," Darry tells him as everyone is sitting around the living room.
"Can I please wear my uniform?" Pony asks giving his best puppy dog look to his eldest brother. Darry wanted to say no. he thought of wearing a dirty uniform to bed grossed him out slightly. The look his brother gave won him over.
" Run along and brush your teeth, and ho potty," Darry instructs caving on the uniform.
Pony quickly ran to the bathroom to take care of business before returning. Pony was not ready for bed he was not tired at all. Luckily, Pony's brothers knew how this worked. Sometimes when their little brother was tired, he would hit a third wind and be bouncing off the walls.
"Alright little monster start telling everyone goodnight," Darry tells the youngster scooping him into his arms. Pony gave a pout. He hated missing anything going on and it was Friday so there was always something.
"Night everyone," Pony grumped. Everyone wished him a good night as Darry headed off towards the boy's room.
"Not tired," Pony tried one last time. Darry chuckled. The day his brother was easy about bed would be the day hell froze over. Pony usually fights going to bed. When he lost that battle, he ended up winning most of the battles about going to sleeping alone. Pony was dependent on his brothers to fall asleep.
"It's off to bed I said," tells him tossing him into his bed. Darry covered his brother up before planting a kiss on his head.
"Night baby," Darry tells him handing Pony his soft blanket he has had since he was a baby. That blanket was almost a security blanket for him. Pony instantly places the blanket up to his face.
"Night Darry," Pony called to his brother as his nightlight was flipped on and his light was shut off. Darry returned to the living room dropping tiredly into his recliner. Today he had to work overtime since the rain had delayed progress on the house yesterday.
"What's your plans tonight Soda/" Darry asked.
"Stevie and I are taking the girls out. You going to join us Dal?" Soda questions.
"Nah I think me, and Johnny are going to hit the rodeo." Dally answers,
"I might meet you at the drags If I don't get too wasted tonight," Two-Bit tells Soda who rolls his eyes, everyone knew He would be drunk off his ass. Darry always enjoyed the silence Friday nights brought. Anybody who was ever been o there home knew that silence was a luxury.
"We are headed out," Dally tells everyone after checking the time. Johnny got up to follow.
"I'm out too," Two0but chimes following them out the door. Darry rolled his eyes as the front door slammed shut behind them.
It was that moment that Ponyboy climbed into his brother's chair and lap clutching his blanket. Darry sighed. He knew his brother was not going to stay in bed, but he always hoped that one day he would, Darry quickly adjusts his brother where his head was on Darry's chest. He soon started slowly rocking his recliner rubbing his brothers head softly.
Pony did not even fight it. Soon the sound of his brother's heart mixed with the movement of the chair lulled Ponyboy to sleep. Darry smiled to himself at the site of the sweet innocence of his brothers face as he slept.
"I don't know why we try. We know the kid isn't going to bed without one of us," Soda laughed as he stood up headed towards the door.
I hoped you enjoyed. If anyone would love to Beta for me message me, please. I would be internally grateful.
