Hello, I am in fact still writing even tho I haven't posted something here in months! This is a canon x OC story, so if you're not into that kind of thing you can skip this. This is mostly stuff I've written to calm myself down while I was upset, so it might just be incredibly boring or weird.
Also the word 'wellies' can go dig a hole so they're just called boots here.
(Yes the title is stupid, deal with it)
Flower Crowns
"ALBERT GODDAMN DASILVA WHY DID YOU PAINT THE CAT?!"
"I READ SOMEWHERE IT COULD MAKE HER FLY-"
"HOW WOULD PAINTING HER DO THAT?!" Specs exclaimed. "You know what? I don't care, Jack or Davey can fix this, I'm done playing the mom for today." He grabbed his coat and opened the front door.
"Wait, where are ya going?" Albert asked, somehow confused about why Specs was leaving.
"I'm gonna take a walk, far, far away from the chaos here," Specs answered him. "And if the cat's still pink when I'm back…" He didn't finish his sentence because in the moment nothing threatening came to mind. But it seemed to have an effect on Albert.
"Then what?" He asked, visibly nervous. Instead of answering Specs walked away. "Then what, Specs? SPECS!" but Specs had already disappeared around the corner.
Walking around the streets of New York Specs realized that this wasn't the best place to go when you want to be alone. There were different noises and people everywhere. Some guy was arguing with his parents about why he wouldn't be a good doctor. Somewhere else a girl, who Specs recognized as a new newsie, rang the bell on her bike trying to get through the busy traffic. "Dit is zo veel makkelijker in Nederland." he heard her say, before she disappeared behind a girl Specs recognized anywhere.
"Blossom!" he ran towards her. Blossom turned around and smiled brightly when she noticed him.
"Specs! What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be selling papers?"
"Ain't you supposed ta be waterin' plants?" Specs grinned.
"I was just on my way. You could come with me if you'd like!" Blossom offered.
"I don't think your boss would like having me around his house again..." With Blossom's boss Specs meant Joseph Pulitzer, the very man he'd striked against a few months ago. Blossom was his gardener.
"Oh, Joseph isn't home, he's on some sort of business trip…" Blossom waved her hand in dismissal. "Besides, you don't look like you're enjoying yourself here." she gestured around her.
"I guess you're right…" Specs wasn't sure why he was getting so nervous about going with Blossom to the garden. He'd been there before, that was how they met. Katherine secretly planned a picnic while her father was gone and Blossom happened to be working that day. They ended up talking a bit and got along well.
"So, are you coming with me?" Blossom looked at her watch. "I was planning to be there in 20 minutes."
"Yeah, sure, let's go then!"
Blossom led him through the busy streets of New York to the house of Joseph Pulitzer. It was huge as you'd expect from a man as rich and influential as him. Blossom opened her bag and pulled out her keys. There were only four. One for her own small apartment, one for the bike she never used, one for Pulitzer's front door, and one for his shed.
"The garden's a bit of a mess right now as I didn't have time to finish work yesterday. So I'm sorry if you trip over something." Blossom opened the front door and gestured for Specs to come inside. "You gotta take off your shoes, Joseph hates dirt."
They made their way through the huge living room. Specs was sure it was at least twice the size of the living room in the lodging house. There were two sitting areas, one including a TV and two huge couches. The other consisted of two chairs and a large bookshelf. On the left side of the shelf was a photograph of a daughter and her father.
"Oh my gods, is that Katherine?" He quickly walked over to further inspect the photo.
"Yep! That's little Kath!" Blossom appeared behind him, looking over his shoulder. "Geez, she used to have huge eyes!"
"You do too," Specs noted, looking at Blossom's big, green eyes.
"That's just my glasses, they're not that big."
"Well, they're still nice to look at."
Blossom smiled and pulled him by his arm to the glass door and into the garden. She looked at Specs' feet, a hint of worry in her eyes when she saw his socks that had so many holes in them that she wasn't sure they were even worthy of the name. "What's your shoe size?" she asked, opening a large chest. Specs shrugged, making Blossom sigh. "These seem about right." She said, handing him a pair of boots.
"Thank you." He accepted the boots and put them on. Immediately noticing the shocking difference in quality compared to his shoes.
"Quite a difference wearing something with quality, isn't it?" Blossom teased.
"Hey! My shoes have been serving me well since I was 15! Besides, when they's real dirty all I need is some wax and they's good as new!" Specs defended his shoes. Blossom shot him a 'yeah sure, like you could even afford wax' look.
"Right... anyways! Do you wanna help me feed the bunnies?" She nudged her head towards the corner of the garden.
"Of course! Katherine has bunnies?"
"Well yeah, but she never takes care of them…" Blossom made her way through the messier part of the garden. "I'm pretty sure she'd forget she has them if I didn't ask her to buy some food for them every once in a while."
Right in the corner of the room was a large cage with three little bunnies. One white with black spots, one brown with a long scar on its ear, and one that was completely white.
"They're adorable!" Specs exclaimed.
"I know right!" Blossom laughed.
"Do they have names?"
"This little fella here," Blossom picked up the brown one, "Is Nero." She put him down again and picked up the black and white one. "This one's named Jasper and the other one's Snowwhite."
"How did Nero end up with that scar?" Specs asked, letting the bunny sniff his fingers.
"We don't know, he's had it for as long as I can remember. Luckily it doesn't hurt him," Blossom explained. "I'll go get the food, you can stay with them." and with that she left him alone. Slowly he picked up Nero and put him into his lap. The bunny was calm and didn't try to escape once. He just relaxed in Specs' lap.
"I see you and Nero are getting along," Blossom smiled. She was carrying pieces of lettuce, and a bowl containing small pieces of apple and carrots.
"He's very calm."
"Yeah, he's the calmest of the three." Blossom grabbed several pieces of apple from the bowl and put them in Specs' hand. "Here," she said. Nero immediately started nibbling on them. "So, you like bunnies?" She asked.
"I love them! I tried to convince Kloppmann to buy one for the lodging house. Turns out some a' us are allergic, so we couldn't," Specs explained.
"That's too bad, Pulitzer thought he was allergic, but that just ended up being a pollen allergy." Blossom put a few pieces of lettuce and the bowl in the cage. Now that Specs examined it further it was more like an area with a fence around it and several little cages inside.
Once they were done feeding the bunnies Blossom stood up and looked around. "I should really get to work now, you can stay with the bunnies if you want," she said.
"Nah, I'll help ya," Specs groaned as he stood up, feeling like an old man.
Blossom walked over to the shed, closely followed by Specs. "So you wanna help me out huh?" She asked.
"Yeah, I do."
"You can start by watering the sunflowers over there." She pointed at the other corner of the garden that contained about six sunflowers. "Just don't give them too much water, I'll get the watering can." She said disappearing into the shed. It didn't take her long to return with an old looking watering can, which she carefully placed on the ground. After that she grabbed a hose and put it into the opening at the top of it. "Would you mind making sure it doesn't move?" She asked, referring to the hose. "Then I'm gonna turn it on."
"Sure," Specs answered, before he got a devilish idea.
"So now that the watering can is filling I- GAH!" Blossom screamed as Specs sprayed water on her with the hose. "GOD DANG IT SPECS!" She laughed while trying to avoid the water as much as possible. She created a small pile of dirt which she threw at Specs. She hit him right in the face. He dropped the hose and Blossom quickly picked it up. Now Specs was the one getting sprayed with water. "That'll teach ya!" She exclaimed.
"No! Have mercy!" Specs jokingly begged while running away. She took this as an opportunity to hastily clean her glasses.
"Give up yet?!" She yelled.
"Never!" Specs' head popped up from above the bush where he was hiding.
An epic chase through the garden followed, until both were out of breath and soaking wet. "Maybe… maybe we should return... to peace," Blossom panted. Specs didn't really give an answer, he just collapsed onto the ground. "Oh no, are you dead?" She asked, poking his side with her foot.
"Almost," Specs answered, opening one eye.
Blossom laughed and laid down next to him. She looked up at the sky, examining the clouds. "Specs look! That one's like a djungelskog!"
"Djunkelskog?" Specs laughed, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah, y'know like that giant IKEA bear?"
"Now that you've said it…. nah, still don't see it." Specs grinned, looking at Blossom who stuck out her tongue.
"How about that one? It kinda looks like the Deathly Hallows." She pointed at the sky.
"Yeah- Wait, ya like Harry Potter?!" Specs sat up and looked Blossom in the eyes.
"Of course I do! How could I not?" She laughed, sitting up too.
"Gods, finally someone that likes it too!" Blossom had never seen Specs smile this brightly.
"Really? None of the other newsies like it?"
"Nope, they all just call me a nerd and say it's stupid," Specs answered, adjusting his glasses.
"They're stupid," Blossom said and made a slightly disgusted face.
"There's no denyin' that. Who's your favorite character?"
That's how they started a long conversation about Harry Potter. Most importantly about why they thought Neville was the best character. Slowly, without even noticing it, Blossom started weaving flowers into a colorful flower crown. She'd been making flower crowns since she was six years old and by knew knew how to make them with her eyes closed. As her hands gracefully connected the flowers Specs rambled on about Neville.
"I just think that if your parents have been tortured to insanity and your teacher is still your worst fear-" Specs frowned and looked up as Blossom placed the flower crown onto his head.
"Yellow suits you," She said, her cheeks tinted a soft pink.
"I- thank you…" Specs smiled, touching the crown with one hand. As he did that Blossom got a slight glimpse of his watch and immediately looked at her own.
"Shit! It's 5:45 pm already," she quickly stood up and dusted herself off. "I still gotta clean everything up and then go home and make dinner!"
"Oh, right!" Specs stood up and followed her back to the shed where they cleaned up everything. Before he knew it they were standing outside of Pulitzer's front door, saying goodbye.
"I really liked today, we should do this more often," Blossom said, locking the door.
"Yeah, definitely." Specs held is hand out for a handshake, but instead Blossom hugged him tight. Both weren't sure of what to say when she let go.
"I uh… I'll just go then," she mumbled, still smiling.
The walk home felt a lot longer than when Specs walked together with Blossom. Maybe it was because he almost got lost or maybe it was because this time he was alone. When he arrived at the lodging house he took off the flower crown, but still held it tightly in his hands. He wasn't sure if he ever wanted to let go.
I hope you enjoyed this little one-shot (and if you did, feel free telling me your thoughts in a review). I sure enjoyed writing it! Now I will probably disappear again for two months.
