Welcome, my friends, to yet another one-shot.
This one is very much inspired by a Big Bang Theory episode, to the point where some of the dialogue is... almost exactly the same. The episode is called The Closet Reconfiguration if you wanna watch it.
Anyways it's the time to respond to reviews:
VeronicaWeasley: MWEHEHEHEHEHHE FEEL THE PAIN! Honestly I'm really glad you liked this, because it's not what I usually like to write, but THANK YOUUUU!
Where He Wanted To Be
Specs didn't hate his father. He simply strongly disliked him. Who wouldn't? After all he did leave him and his mother when Specs was nine years old. Not many people knew why and how Specs' father left. They only knew he did and that it resulted in Specs ending up in the lodging house at the age of eleven. It was enough for them to understand it was a sensitive subject though, and it wasn't mentioned often.
"Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see a tiger in the wild?" Romeo asked, taking another sip of his drink.
"What?" Blossom chuckled, putting her own drink down.
"Like you're just walkin' there and suddenly it's just 'OH SHIT A TIGER!'?"
"Strangely enough, no, I've never wondered 'bout that." Specs collected the plates from the table and put them down, before joining his friends on the couch.
"Really, Specky? I thought everyone wondered what it would be like ta meet a tiger." Albert, clearly tipsy, made his way over to the fridge. "Do ya have anotha' bottle fer me?"
"Nope." Blossom jumped up to stop him from taking another beer. "You still gotta get home, y'know?" Albert cursed under his breath before loudly announcing he was leaving for the bathroom.
"I swear to God, I'm still surprised we haven't found him passed out in an alleyway or somethin'." Specs opened his own bottle.
"Truly."
"WOAH SPECS, YOU'D NEVA' GUESS WHAT I JUST FOUND!" Albert yelled, running back into the living room a short while later.
"A tiger?"
"Yes, Romeo, he obviously found a tiger in da bathroom!"
"Well, ya neva' know!"
"Nah, it ain't a tiger." Albert threw a letter, still in an envelope, into Specs' lap. "It's fer you, ya neva' opened it."
"What is it?" Blossom leaned over, looking at the letter.
"It's from my dad…." Specs picked it up. "He sent it ta me two years after he left. I neva' opened it though, so how come the envelope's open?" He looked at Albert.
"I might've taken a little peek…" Albert confessed, looking down.
"So you just go around openin' letters that ain't yours?"
"I's drunk an' stupid, okay? Gimme a break!" Albert exclaimed, throwing his hands in the air.
"Well, what're ya waitin' for? Read it!"
Specs looked around before shaking his head. "No."
"Don't you wanna know what's inside?" Blossom asked.
"I couldn't care less." He placed the envelope on the table. "If I wanted ta know what was inside, I would've opened it years ago." Specs stood up, it was clear the subject was making him uncomfortable. "Someone's gotta drive Al and Romeo home."
3:07 AM
Specs sighed when he saw the clock. He took another sip of his tea and looked at the envelope on the table. He hadn't been able to close an eye all night because of that goddamn thing. One part of him wanted to know what was inside. The other part wanted to destroy the letter and completely close that chapter of his life.
"Why are ya still up?" Blossom walked into the room, rubbing her eyes.
"Couldn't sleep…."
"What's wrong?" She sat down next to him.
"It's that stupid letter." Specs picked it up, taking a closer look. "To: Daniel, From: Your Dad" was written on it in his dad's neat handwriting.
"You must be really curious about what's inside…."
"Of course I'm curious,I haven't seen da man in sixteen years." Specs bounced his leg up and down until Blossom put a calming hand onto it.
"Maybe you should open it. It could be an apology or explanation? It could be nice to at least know the reason for why he left."
"He abandoned me and my mom, Blossom. He don't deserve to explain himself." Specs started walking over to the kitchen. He grabbed a lighter and held it below the letter. Blossom watched from a distance as he threw the now burning letter in the sink. He walked back over to her and together they watched the flames.
"Can you put it out, please?" Blossom asked, taking a step back as the flames became higher.
"Yeah, of course, I'm sorry." Specs quickly put out the flames and threw the few remaining bits of paper in the trash can.
"Do you feel better now?"
"Yeah." Specs smiled. "Let's go back to bed."
"He burnt it?" Romeo asked in disbelief, leaning over the table at Starbucks.
"Yeah, it was really bothering him…."
"Do ya know what was inside?"
"No, I guess we'll never find out." Blossom put down her coffee.
"Albert knows tho, why don't ya ask him?"
"I can't do that!" Blossom said loudly. "How can I be a good girlfriend if I'm invading his privacy like that?"
"I dunno, maybe I can ask him and then you'll just happen ta be in da room," Romeo suggested.
"It feels wrong…."
"Yeah, but don't ya wanna know?"
"I do."
"Then why not just ask Albert?"
Blossom definitely wasn't proud about what happened after that, but as Romeo asked Albert what was in the letter she couldn't help but follow the conversation.
"I ain't gonna tell ya what was in there," Albert said, looking up from his phone.
"Oh, come on! Don't ya wanna tell me?" Romeo begged.
"I do, very much actually, it's very interestin', interesting enough fer me ta remember most a' it, even though I definitely don't remember how I got home... but no! What was in that letter ain't fer me ta share!"
"Just tell me!"
"Fine, I'll tell ya!"
"Wait really?" Albert nodded. "You're just gonna tell me that easily?"
"Do ya want me ta tell ya or not?" Albert sat up straight, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes, yes, sorry… Now what was in da letter?"
"Oh, where is my hairbrush? Oh, where is my hairbrush? Oh, where, oh, where, oh, where, oh, where, oh, where, oh, where, oh, where, oh, where oh, where… Is my hairbrush?" Blossom muttered, searching for her… hairbrush. She was sitting on her knees on the bathroom floor. Her head was completely hidden in one of the cabinets, looking around for that damn hairbrush.
"What the hell was that?" Specs laughed walking into the bathroom.
"You don't know?" Blossom asked. She looked up and hit her head hard against the edge of the cabinet doing so.
"No, I don't. Are you okay?" Specs rushed over to check on her.
"No, I'm not! You don't know The Hairbrush Song?"
"Should I?"
"Yes! Everyone should. Didn't you like, watch Veggietales as a kid?"
"No…."
Blossom gasped dramatically and gave Specs a sympathetic look. "Poor tiny Specs, not knowing the joy that is Veggietales."
"I… how hard did ya hit yer head?" he chuckled and helped her stand up.
"I'm fine, it's you we should be worried about," Blossom insisted, though she had to steady herself by holding Specs' arms so she would not fall over. "All jokes aside, you really didn't watch Veggietales?"
"I didn't. My family wasn't that religious y'know…." Specs wasn't really focusing on the whole Veggietales thing, he thought making sure his girlfriend didn't pass out was a bit more important. "I think you should sit down for a second."
"No, really, I'm okay." Blossom smiled as she looked up. "My head just hurts a little, that's all."
"You sure? Should I tell everyone we're goin' ta be a bit later?"
"No, no, no, we were both lookin' forward to the party tonight. I'm not gonna ruin that."
"Blossom, if you're not feeling good…."
"Shush! I am fine!" Specs was not entirely convinced, but he figured he couldn't change Blossom's mind. "Now where is my goddamn hairbrush?"
"You mean that one?" Specs questioned, gesturing to the hairbrush laying on top of the cabinet.
"Oh, for fuck's sake… you're tellin' me it was there all the time?"
"Probably, yeah…."
With a deep sigh Blossom picked up the hairbrush.
A little while later they were standing in front of the door to Jack, Katherine, and Crutchie's penthouse. "Wait…" Blossom stopped Specs before he could ring the bell.
"What's wrong?"
"I…." A deep sigh escaped Blossom's lips before she continued. "I know what was in your dad's letter…. I'm sorry I'm not proud I just-"
"What?" Specs looked at her in disbelief, making her want to sink through the floor. She looked down and started playing with the ring on her finger. For a moment they just stood there, Blossom looking anywhere but Specs' eyes, as he processed what she'd just told him. Specs rang the bell, rapidly tapping his foot onto the floor, as anger started building up inside him. As soon as Jack opened it he ran inside.
"ALBERT DASILVA I SWEAR TO FUCKING GOD!" he yelled, stopping when he noticed the redhead. The redhead in question let out a high pitched scream and hid behind Race.
"Woah, calm down, what's goin' on?" Jack asked.
"He blabbed about what was in my dad's letter!"
"To be fair, he didn't want to tell us at fi-"
"'Us'? Who else knows?" Specs looked around the room, getting more frustrated with the second. Slowly almost every newsie put up their hand.
"So, let me get this straight: everyone except for me knows what was in that letter?" Some in the room nodded.
"If ya want we could tell ya what was inside," Elmer suggested, speaking softly.
"I don't wanna know what was inside… I mean I do, but-." Specs turned to Blossom, the tears building up in his eyes visible behind his glasses. "Why would you do this?"
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"I- I gotta go," he spoke quickly and ran away.
Blossom sank to the floor, hiding her face in her hands.
"Hey, it's all gonna be okay," Katherine assured and sat down next to Blossom.
"I can't believe I'm this fucking stupid," she muttered. "I knew I shouldn't have listened, I shouldn't have."
"We all do stupid stuff sometimes." Crutchie offered her a glass of wine.
"I don't understand… Does he wanna know what was inside or not?" Buttons wondered out loud.
"Yeah, should we like… tell him or…." Henry put down his sandwich.
"Maybe we can figure out a way we tell him, but like… he don't know?" Everyone turned to Jack as he said this. "What? I'm just suggestin' stuff!"
"Jack Kelly…." Davey started, "you're a freaking genius."
As soon as Specs arrived home he hid in the bedroom. He sat down on the floor with his back leaning against the bed and thought about what had happened. He took off his glasses and wiped away a few tears. "God fucking damnit…" he whispered to himself. After a while alone he calmed down. He didn't understand why the others did what they did. He knew he wouldn't have.
"Specs?" He heard Blossom's voice from outside the room.
He hesitated for a moment before answering. "In here."
Blossom appeared in the door frame. "I'm so sorry, I should've walked away when Albert told Romeo, I just- I think I just thought that maybe, if I knew what was inside, I would've been able to help you…. I still should've just left it alone, I'm sorry."
"It's alright, I shouldn't have freaked out like that," he admitted.
"Do you wanna come into the living room? I got a little surprise for ya." Blossom smiled a bit.
"I don' know if I'm in da mood fer surprises, Blossom…."
"I promise you won't regret this one." Specs took her hand as she helped him up. His eyes widened as he entered the living room.
Scattered around the room were Romeo, Albert, Katherine, and Davey.
"What are you guys doin' here?"
"Afta' ya left we weren't sure if ya wanted ta know what was inside the letter or not," Romeo started.
"Yeah, so we came up with a plan in which we tell ya, but ya won't really know what it was, but ya also will, but… I think it's better if Dave explains." Albert gestured for Davey to continue.
"We were discussing what had just happened when Jack suggested telling ya what was in the letter without you knowing we did. That's when it hit me that, if we all tell you a story which may or may not have been what was in the envelope, you'll know what was in there without truly knowing… If you understand what I mean," he explained. Specs looked at everyone sitting there, not sure of what to say.
"Sit down, honey," Blossom said. Specs did so. "Romeo, why don't you start?"
"Alright." Romeo shifted in his seat. "Inside da envelope was a happy birthday card. It said 'Happy birthday, Daniel. I hope you can forgive me for the horrible things I've done. I love you, dad.''" Specs nodded, Blossom tried to figure out what he was thinking by examining his face, but failed. "Oh, and it was one of those cards with little lights in it!" When nobody responded to that Romeo looked at Davey as a sign for him to tell his story.
"The letter said that your dad had to leave because of personal conflict with your mother. He made it very clear that none of it was your fault and that, even though his actions may have made you believe otherwise, he loved you dearly. Katherine?"
Katherine cleared her throat. "In the letter your father told you that one day, while you were selling papers on the street, he saw you. He said he didn't dare come up to you, because he feared you'd hate him. When he saw you he cried, because he was so proud."
"Really?" Specs' voice broke.
"Maybe," Albert sat up a little straighter, "Or it's complete bullshit."
"Albert!"
"I'm sorry! Yer dad explained that he'd lost his job an' started feelin' like a burden ta you and your mom. He left, 'cause he felt like you an' yer mom would be betta' off without him. He also told ya that family is the most important thing in this world, and that you should neva' throw it away like he did."
Everyone looked at Blossom now. "The envelope contained several photos of you and your dad together. On each of them he wrote a little note, tellin' you about the day and how he missed those moments. The last picture was of him holding you the day you were born. On that one he wrote 'Daniel, my son, my greatest gift.'"
For a full thirty seconds no one made a sound. It was a deafening silence in which Blossom desperately tried to see what Specs was thinking. He just looked in front of him, his eyes slightly red behind his glasses. "Are you okay?" she eventually asked.
"Yeah, I'm- I'm great." Specs ran a hand through his hair. "Thank you guys so much, I- I don't know what to say. I-" Romeo jumped up and attacked his friend in a hug.
"So…" Albert raised his eyebrows, "Which one do ya think it re- OW!" He was cut off by Katherina standing hard on his foot.
"Actually, I don't wanna know. I… I want all of them ta be true."
Blossom stood up and took Specs' hands. "Well, one of them is," she assured. Specs smiled as he squeezed her hands tightly.
"Thank you, guys," he sighed.
"Hey, the party's still going on. Why don't we go back?" Katherine suggested. Specs nodded and Albert threw an arm around his shoulder.
"I's sorry I told everyone what was in da letter."
"I'm not gonna lie, what ya did really hurt me," Specs said. "But I forgive ya." Albert let out a sigh of relief. "For now." When Albert tensed up again after that Specs laughed and patted his back. "Don' worry youse fine."
For a moment, things felt right again. Specs knew it wouldn't last forever. He knew that soon enough everything would go to shit again in one way or another. In that moment it didn't matter though. He was with the people he loved, he was where he felt safe, loved, and understood. He was where he wanted to be.
That was it! Please do tell me your thoughts in a review! And just for fun, tell me which story you think was true!
