HI HELLO,
once again I am posting OC content. I love these guys, lately I've been thinking a lot about them. So, enjoy! :)
Review responses:
VeronicaWeasley: Sepp immediately thinking she's a newsie just proves how Sepp is an idiot when it comes to social stuff. Sepp and Snatcher are my bi/gay disaster sons so yes, it is definitely gay. MWEHEHE SUDDEN ANGST IS FUN! You will get to know more about the whole May situation once I'm done writing down everything about it. NO WAIT DON'T CRY, YOU GET A COOKIE!
Trying
The moment Sepp stepped inside he knew there was something wrong. It was unusually quiet. Not that it was never quiet in the house, but there was something different about this silence. His suspicions were confirmed when he walked into the living room and saw his father sitting in one of the large chairs. He'd been waiting for him, and judging by the expression on his face, it wasn't because he'd missed him.
"Sit down," he said. Sepp obeyed and sat down on the couch.
"What is this?" His father pointed to a receipt that was laying on the table.
Sepp picked it up and his heart dropped when he saw what was on there.
"You bought two portions of french fries yesterday. Who were you with?" His father asked. Sepp could feel panic building up in his chest.
"George."
"George who's in Scotland visiting his family?" His father raised an eyebrow.
"I- I was just hungry."
"Please, you can barely eat a pizza slice by yourself, let me ask you one more time, who were you with?"
"Snatcher," Sepp whispered barely audible.
"Who?"
"Snatcher."
"Who the hell is Snatcher?" His father demanded.
"He's… a newsie. I met him when you sent me to get a newspaper," Sepp explained.
"What on earth are you doing at a snack bar with a newsie?" His father had a look of disgust on his face.
"I've been teaching him how to read," Sepp mumbled completely giving up on trying to lie.
"What?" There was a deafening silence. Sepp didn't dare speak as he waited for his father to start his rant. "You're still in this teacher phase? I thought we'd finally got your mind off of that!" His father exclaimed, standing up. "How many times do we have to tell you? You're not going to be a teacher, Sepp. If your mother heard about this… How is this still a thing? I thought we'd made it very clear. As long as we have any authority over you, you are not dabbling in this teacher business!"
"I just-"
"No! You listen to me now. You're not gonna meet this Snatcher anymore. Focus on your own education, not that of some random newsie. Think of your future! Teachers barely earn anything, you'll be a disgrace. May would've never done things like this!"
"Would you stop comparing me to May?" Sepp asked. "I'll never be May, so stop comparing me to her." His father looked shocked but quickly regained his composure.
"Then think of what she would've wanted. May would've wanted for you to have a successful job, for you to not end up in some crappy Appartement-"
"No. May, would've wanted me to be happy." Sepp stood up, he looked up at his father, tears slowly starting to run down his cheeks. "May would've wanted for me to do what I felt was best. She wouldn't have wanted for me to be miserable having some job that I don't like!"
His father stepped forward. "You have no idea how hard life will be for you once-"
"You have no idea how hard life already is! You have no idea how hard it is for me to know I'll never be what you want me to be. You have no idea how hard it is to know that I'll never be as great as May. That I will never make you proud!" Sepp yelled. His father took a surprised step back.
"Well, if you want me to be proud, you should at least do your best!"
"I am doing my best! I've been doing my best my entire life, but it's never good enough! My best will never be good enough for you. How can you possibly not see that?"
"If you want me to see it, try harder!"
"Are you even listening to what I'm saying?" Sepp's voice broke. There was a silence that told him everything he needed to know. "Wow…" he let out a humorless chuckle. "I'm- I have to go," he said.
"Where are you going?"
"I don't know, anywhere." He moved to the corridor and grabbed his coat. He slammed the door shut behind him before his father could say anything else. It was cold and the sun was starting to go down. He shoved his hands in his pockets and started walking. He walked aimlessly through the streets, not paying attention to where he was going.
After a long time of wandering, he was standing at the edge of a pier. If he had taken one more step he had fallen into the sea. He made sure not to lean forward too much. He'd taken a few swimming lessons when he was younger, but by now he'd forgotten most of it. He was quite sure that if he fell into the seawater he wouldn't be able to make his way out. Though the dark waves scared him there was something weirdly beautiful about them. He stared at them for a long time, the sun had completely disappeared and made place for the bright moon.
"Sepp?" A voice from behind made Sepp jump and lose his balance. Before he knew it the waves he'd been staring at were swallowing him. For a moment everything was chaos. Suddenly he felt a hand grab hold of his own and pull him up. The hand dragged him across the pier to a safer spot where he lay coughing for a moment. He sat up and reached for his inhaler, but quickly realized it would be soaking wet and of no use. Instead, he took a few long, deep breaths to calm down. "You's an idiot, ya know that?" He felt relief take over him when he heard Snatcher's voice.
"Sorry…" he muttered as Snatcher, who was soaking wet too, helped him stand up.
"Y'know ya coulda' died, right?" Snatcher asked. Sepp nodded, he'd never seen Snatcher this worried. Snatcher put a hand on Sepp's forehead and shook his head. "You's freezin'."
"Thanks, I hadn't noticed that myself." Snatcher didn't seem to appreciate that comment.
"Ya should probably go home," he said.
"I can't."
"Oh, well… then ya can come home with me?" He suggested. When Sepp nodded he grabbed his arm and dragged him through the streets to a tall building. Inside Sepp immediately noticed that this was a lodging house.
"Stay here," Snatcher told him and ran off. After a while, he returned holding a pile of dry clothes. "Put these on, there's a bathroom there." he pointed at a door at the end of the hall. "I made sure ya can stay here fer da night."
The clothes were warm and comfortable, and when he stepped out Sepp was hit with the smell of hot chocolate. "What were ya doin' there anyway?" Snatcher asked approaching him with two cups.
"I could ask you the same question," Sepp mumbled, running a hand through his wet hair.
"But I asked you first." Snatcher handed him a cup and sat down on a couch where Sepp joined him.
"I had a… disagreement with my father, so I kinda ran off," Sepp sighed.
"Oh," Snatcher looked at him with a worried expression, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah… well, no. But you shouldn't worry about that," Sepp waved his hand in dismissal. "Why were you there?"
"I go there when I need ta clear my head," Snatcher took his hair out of his ponytail. It immediately fell in front of his face. Sepp didn't even notice he was staring until Snatcher pointed it out. "What?" he asked.
"Oh, I just uh…" Sepp didn't quite look away. "I've never seen you with your hair down before."
"I neva' do it unless I have to." Snatcher leaned back. "I used ta cut it myself, but that just looked like shit," he said and Sepp chuckled. "So then I stopped. I's grown quite fond a' it this way."
Sepp nodded, taking a sip from his cup. It tasted cheap, but it was exactly what he needed at the moment. "My mom used to cut my hair," he whispered. "She stopped after she accidentally cut my ear once." Snatcher chuckled and closed his eyes.
There were a few loud knocks on the door and with a deep sigh Snatcher stood up to see who it was. Sepp stayed in his spot on the couch. "Uh, Sepp?" Snatcher yelled after a moment. "I think it's best if ya come here for a second."
Sepp walked into the hall and was immediately attacked in a tight hug.
"Oh Sepp, honey, I'm so glad I found you!" Sepp's mother held him tightly. "You're freezing! What happened? What are you wearing?" Sepp didn't answer, he didn't know what to say. "Are you okay? Your father won't talk about you. It took me hours to find you."
That's when Sepp broke. He buried his face in his mother's shoulder finally hugging her back. He hadn't expected his mother to look for him, and yet here she was. She was holding him for what felt like the first time in forever and he only now realized how much he'd missed her hugs. "I love you," he whispered.
"I love you too, honey." his mother pulled away and smiled softly, tears still rolling down her cheeks. Sepp looked past her at Snatcher who, to his surprise, quickly wiped away some tears as well.
Soon, all three were sitting on the couch as Sepp explained the events of the day, Snatcher occasionally adding a comment. His mother listened patiently. Once he was done she hugged him once again. "I'm so sorry," she whispered. After that, she hugged Snatcher who hesitantly hugged back. "Thank you for helping him." She returned to Sepp and tears started flowing down her cheeks again. "I'm so sorry about everything," she whispered. "Ever since May… I haven't been myself and it's clearly been taking a toll on you. I'm sorry I haven't been there for you. I promise from now on I'll pick my life up again." She smiled weakly and put a hand on her chest. "And regarding the whole teaching situation, would it truly make you happy?"
Sepp nodded, "Yes, incredibly."
"Then, even if it's not what I had in mind for you, I'll support you through it. When we get home we'll talk to your father-"
"Mom," this was the moment Sepp had been dreading ever since she arrived, "you have no idea how happy I am you'll support me. I really can't thank you enough, but I can't go home. At least, not tonight. Maybe tomorrow, or the day after, but tonight I can't. Not after what happened today…" Sepp swallowed and anxiously looked at his mother. She nodded.
"I understand," she said softly, "you don't have to come home today." Sepp sighed in relief. "Do promise me you'll come home soon?"
He smiled and grabbed her hand, "I promise."
His mother left after one last hug, leaving just him and Snatcher. "I'm sorry you had to see all that."
"It's fine," Snatcher ran a hand through his hair. "Afta' all you's done fer me, I owe it to ya."
"Thank you," Sepp whispered. Before he knew it, he was laying on a thin mattress on the floor of Snatcher's room, staring out the window. Watching the clouds drift by he fell asleep.
Tada! I dunno, I don't really like this chapter, but you get it anyway. I would really appreciate a review telling me your thoughts!
