Avatar Roku, Kyoshi, Yanchen, and Kuruk appeared before him. Aang couldn't stop himself from scowling at the avatars.
"Why did you do it?" Aang asked them.
"It was the only way to bring peace young avatar," Kyoshi explained.
"There could've been another way."
"I'm sorry Aang, but if he was to live you would be repeating my mistakes," Roku said solemnly.
"Roku, are you blind to the fact that this was your grandson's father we just killed?"
"The life of one isn't worth thousands," Roku and Kyoshi said at the same time.
"You can't turn back time Aang, you just have to accept it and move on," Kuruk advised.
Aang turned to Roku. "Your grandson is gonna hate us in the long run. Do you not realize that he doesn't have any other family around?"
"Technically he still has Azula and Iroh so he's not alone."
Aang buried his face in his hands and shook his head. "Zuko couldn't kill his father while he was in the throne room with him so how did you guys expect me to do the same thing when the person who justifiably hates his father couldn't do it?"
"What other choice do we have? He was about to do the same thing that cost you your entire culture. Had I stopped Sozin the war wouldn't have begun in the first place and your people would've still be here."
Aang squeezed his eyes tight as he tried his best not to cry.
"I know it's difficult right now but had you not killed him there wouldn't have been a world to save. You've bought justice to the world by getting rid of that tyrant."
Aang was about to open his mouth but his past lives moved backwards and vanished in a puff of smoke. He growled in frustration as he laid on his back. How will face his friend tomorrow? He completely understood if Zuko hated him forever. Why didn't he stop himself? He gained control over the avatar state so why didn't he talk himself out of it?
Aang stood up, jumped the railing, and floated down to the ground. He walked to the pond and meditated once more.
"Aang?" Sokka said as he walked up to him.
"What is it Sokka?" Aang hissed.
"It's almost dark."
Aang made a ball then jumped on before scaling up the wall. He jumped off and landed on the balcony. He watched Sokka throw a fit as he ran to the door. The airbender laughed a bit but it did little to cease the guilt and shame.
"Come on up slow poke."
Aang watched Sokka open the door and dissappear as he entered. The monk went inside the palace and sat on the bed. He heard footsteps so he decided to go investigate. He poked his head out the door then frowned upon seeing Zuko. The young firelord walked towards the door still scowling.
The two teens locked eyes, one with anger the other with wariness. Aang felt like this was a conversation that was long overdue. He slipped out of the room and closed the door. He couldn't speak to Zuko let alone stay in the same room with him but maybe he could just hear the firelord out.
"You finally found the guts to take out my father."
"Yeah, I did. I'm sorry Zuko but there was no other way around it."
Aang surprised himself once he heard what he said. That wasn't me.
"Why couldn't you just knock him unconscience?"
Aang already knew where this was headed. "May I remind you that it was you who told me that I had to kill the man in cold blood?"
"And if uncle dies..."
"Do you not know that I'm perfectly aware about that outcome?!" Aang was not about to become responsible for something that his past lives made him do. "You act like I wanted to kill him! If there was another way then yes I would've ended the war a bit differently so don't get mad at me just because I did what you wanted!"
Katara came out of the room after hearing the argument. She threw a wave in between the two and froze it. The two teens flashed her a glare.
"What are you two arguing about?"
"Yeah, Zuko what were we arguing about?" Aang mocked.
Zuko broke the ice into pieces with a fire blast and prepared to lunge forward. Aang quickly blew his friend backwards with a push of his hands. Zuko yelped as he nearly fell off balance. He grunted in pain as he bashed into the wall. Aang turned the ice back into water and threw it at his rival. Zuko blasted the water with a flame then threw another one at Aang.
Katara doused the flame and placed herself between them. "The sun is already beginning to set. We'll discuss this first thing in the morning."
Zuko and Aang exchanged glares then parted ways so they could have some space. Katara watched the two go into their separate rooms then winced as the doors slammed shut.
