Zuko finished reading a letter then tossed it to the side. "They still didn't find mom." Tears started to run from his eyes. He turned to the window once he heard a screech.
"Momo? What are you doing here?"
The lemur landed on the windowsill then lifted the foot that was gripping the letter. Zuko took hold of the note and read it.
Dear Zuko,
I know that this is a flimsy way to talk to you but I need you to actually help me out. I can't read your mind and I want to make amends. Can you please come down so we can talk this out?
Zuko put the note down and walked to the balcony. Aang was looking up at him dressed in fire nation uniform to blend in. Zuko shook his head as he dissappeared into the palace. He opened the door to let the air nomad in then shut it.
"I'm not even gonna ask."
"Hey Zuko," Aang replied.
"Why are you here?"
"To make amends." Aang rubbed his arm to gather up the courage to speak to Zuko. Judging by the tone of his voice he was ready to kick him to the curb. "I know you're furious at me but I do care Zuko. I just need you cooperate with me so I can help you." He looked at Zuko's golden eyes.
"If you want to help you can find my mother. And trust me, I'm not being sarcastic."
"I will but I want you to come with me." As Aang walked passed Zuko he felt his heart twist in anguish. He snapped himself out of those thoughts to focus on his friend. Now was not the time to crawl back into his shell. "I don't know where she is but I will find her for your sake."
"Thanks Aang," Zuko said grudgingly.
Aang opened his glider outside the window. "See you Zuko." He gripped his glider with both hands then took off into the sky.
Aang felt his stomach drop as he saw Zuko in the front row wiping his eyes. Not once had he seen his friend cry before. Katara and Iroh were holding on to him in an attempt to comfort him. This is all your fault! He remembered the fight he and Zuko had at the palace. Why couldn't you just knock him unconscience? He slumped forward as he fixed his gaze on the ground.
He considered himself lucky that Zuko was nice enough to prevent the soldiers and civilians from harming him while he was in their territory. The casket was lit and everyone dispersed. Zuko stayed put as he was too upset to move away from his father. Iroh held his trembling nephew in his arms and squeezed him. Katara patted his back then glanced back at Aang. She rotated her hand at him with a pleading look on her face.
"I'll talk to him when he's calm," Aang whispered.
The airbender slipped away and made his way out of the Fire Nation. "I can't go to the library, I can't ask any of the citizens here, so how am I suppose to find his mother?"
He climbed on Appa then whipped the rope. "Yip yip!"
With a loud groan Appa slapped his tail on the ground and took off into the sky.
"Think Aang think, where could his mother be?"
"You're not gonna bring Zuko with you?" a voice asked.
Aang couldn't stop the sarcasm from escaping his mouth. "Oh, so now you want to talk to me?" He forced the avatar to come out of hiding so he could confront him. "Yes, I'm bringing him with me but I don't want to get his hopes up too high and fast. I'd rather find his mother by myself than to drag Zuko with me. If I do that then I'll be playing with his heart and I'm already walking on very thin ice."
"You do know that he's setting you up for failure right?"
"Finding his mother who is alive is easier than reviving his father who is dead."
"There's something else that's lingering on your mind."
Aang steered Appa to the left then looked down as anger welled up inside him. "I just don't understand how you can go from 'kill my dad' to wanting to harm me for doing what you asked. I understand that I orphaned him but—" Aang rubbed his forehead as he tried to soothe the headache that was starting to sprout. "At times I just don't understand Zuko. One day you save me and fight alongside me then the next day we're trying to kill each other. The war is over for crying out loud, I'm sick of fighting!"
"He probably thinks we orphaned him," Roku mumbled.
Aang glared at his spiritual guide. "We did orphaned him Roku. You don't know even where his mother is."
"Because I died before I could even meet her."
Aang averted his gaze as he reflected on the harsh words he uttered when he was at the palace.
"Like I said before Aang, no one knows where she is. We only have past life memories, if I actually saw my granddaughter then you would, at least subconsciencely, remember what she looked like."
Aang's frown deepened at this fact. "Is there anyone you know who knows Zuko's mother?"
"Just take Zuko with you so you can search for his mother. The longer you hold this off the more difficult it is going to get to make up with Zuko."
Aang silently agreed with Roku and sent him off. "I guess I'm taking you with me after all Zuko." He turned Appa around to go pick up Zuko. "I just hope you're right and know what you're doing."
