Lorelai was at the shooting range practicing her shot. She was up for her gun certification in just a few days, and she was taking every free moment to practice. It was about two months after Rachel's thirteenth birthday. She did not want to have to wait any longer. No, she didn't -need a gun to do her job however it would make her feel safer on the job and allow her more freedom with the work she could do. It was a Saturday, so she didn't need to worry about a case coming into their team so she could focus without any distractions. Or so she thought anyways.
She was shooting at a target that was ten feet away from her. She had protective ear covers on, but she could feel that someone was watching her. She put her gun down before she looked behind her. Spencer was behind her and seemed to be waiting for her.
She smiled at him. "Hey."
Spencer smiled back "Good afternoon. How's it going?"
Lorelai shrugged. "Not bad. I mean you obviously saw me shooting some. How do you think I am doing?" She asked
Spencer took a few steps, so he was within a foot of her. "I have told you several times that I think you are ready. I think you're just nervous. Which is normal." He told her
Lorelai sighed. "I just don't want to mess this up."
"I don't think you will. You have been practicing for months. I think its time for you to just let your abilities speak for themselves." He told her
Lorelai smiled. "How are you so good at calming me down?"
"Experience. I have known you for over three years." He told her.
She chuckled. "Fair enough."
"Put the gun away, and I can take you to lunch." He told her
She nodded she and Spencer went and returned the weapon to lockup before they left.
They went out to lunch at Lorelai's favorite restaurant. While they were eating Spencer looked over at her.
"We have been dating for about three months. Our team is very observant and profilers meaning if they haven't figured it out yet, they will very soon." He told her
Lorelai chuckled and nodded. She finished her bite before she responded. "You think we should start telling people?"
"I think we should tell our team. I mean they know about Derek & Penny and all they were told was to be professional at work. I don't think it would be any different for us." He told her.
"Maybe not. But Penny doesn't work in the field. Both of us do. Slightly different dynamic." She told him
"They didn't seem to have an issue when we were dating before." He pointed out. "Why do you seem reluctant this time?" He asked reading her face.
Lorelai put her fork down and looked up at him. "The dynamics were very different than. I was the new agent. I was not the boss's daughter."
"I thought he told you that when you were eighteen it could maybe be reconsidered." He told her
"He did. But a lot has changed since than. I was his foster daughter at the time. I was talking about getting emancipated. Its was only supposed to be a short-term situation. I don't think any of us saw him adopting me." She spoke. "I am thrilled he did. It just changes things." She added
"I admit the situation was very different. However. I don't think it would be an issue. If you want, we can talk to him together. See how he feels about it. Go from there?" He suggested
Lorelai took a sip of her water and nodded. "I guess it can't be avoided forever."
Spencer agreed. They finished their meals and Lorelai grabbed the check before Spencer could. She wasn't the type of woman to always let him pay. Spencer didn't argue he just let her pay before they left.
Spencer drove her back to her car before the two of them drove back to her place in their own vehicles.
Aaron was watching TV with Jack, and Rachel was in her room talking on the phone when the two of them came into the house.
"I'm home. Spencer is with me." She called out.
Aaron got up and went to greet them. "Hello. I didn't know Spencer was going with you to the shooting range."
"I didn't either. He met me there." Lorelai said
"I see." Aaron responded
"We actually wanted to talk to you." Spencer told the older man.
Aaron nodded and ushered them to the kitchen. Lorelai got out some glasses of water for everyone before sitting down with the two older man.
Aaron looked at the two of them. "What would you like to talk about?" He asked
Lorelai took a breathe. "Well, as you know that when I first started working at the FBI, Spencer and I got close and when we found out I was only sixteen we stopped any romantic relationship because you weren't comfortable with it and because of the legality of it all. Well now that I'm eighteen those feeling are still there for both of us and we have started spending more time together out of work and dating and we… I was worried about how you would feel because even though you said at the time maybe when I was eighteen it could be reconsidered things have changed and I wasn't sure how you would feel." Lorelai started to ramble. She was clearly very nervous she wouldn't look her dad in the eyes.
Aaron listened to his daughter ramble when she was done he took a breathe. "Lorelai. Look at me." He said
Lorelai looked up at him nervousness could be seen in her eyes.
"Do you really think I didn't know?" He asked
Lorelai bit her lip. "I wasn't sure."
"Lorelai. I am a profiler You two work with some of the best profilers in the FBI. We -all know. And I know when you are keeping things from me. Or attempting to anyways. I also knew that it would happen. Yes, I know you two were not together all this time it didn't change that fact that I saw the connection. I appreciate that you two respected my decision to ask you to be apart for the last couple years, but I had -no doubt that the -day you turned eighteen you two would start something back up." Aaron told her.
Lorelai let out the breathe she was holding and nodded.
"I am not upset. Or angry. I have no issue with you two dating. As long as you can keep it professional at work it will not be an issue." Aaron added.
"That will not be an issue." Spencer assured him.
"Then there is no issue." Aaron told the two of them.
Lorelai smiled and nodded.
"I do have one rule." Aaron said. "You" He said looking at Lorelai "Have two younger. Very impressionable siblings. Please be responsible if you are here." He told her he didn't want either of her younger siblings especially Rachel thinking she was allowed to be alone with a boy at thirteen. He knew how much Rachel looked up to Lorelai and wanted to ensure she set a good example.
Lorelai bit the inside of her mouth to keep herself from laughing and nodded. She could see he was uncomfortable thinking about her and Spencer getting intimate, and she didn't want to make it worse.
Spencer nodded. "Won't be a problem."
Aaron nodded. "Good."
They all finished their water while chit chatting about other thing. After a little while Spencer looked at Lorelai.
"I should probably go. I have some things I need to get done today." He told her
Lorelai nodded. "I understand."
Spencer said goodbye to Aaron before he and Lorelai walked towards the door.
"I will see you at work on Monday?" She asked
Spencer nodded and kissed her cheek before heading out. Lorelai smiled and watched him go before closing the door. She went back into the kitchen where Aaron was starting dinner.
"Need any help?" She asked her dad
Aaron looked up at her. "Sure. You can make the salad." He told her.
Lorelai nodded and started to take the ingredients out of the fridge. She brought everything out onto the counter and started to chop.
Aaron looked over at her.
"What is it?" she asked him
"It seemed to me that you were almost afraid to tell me about you and Spencer. Why?" Aaron asked his oldest daughter.
Lorelai took a breathe. "Afraid. No. I wouldn't said I was afraid. I was just unsure how you would react, and I was nervous."
"Lorelai. We discussed it. You knew I was okay with it." He told her.
"The last time we talked about it. I wasn't your official daughter. I wasn't even technically your foster daughter yet and to be honest I thought the adoption was never going to happen. A lot has happened since than." She told him
Aaron nodded. "Yes. A lot has changed. But Lorelai you have been my daughter since the day you came to live with me. I felt that since even before that. Whether or not the adoption had been official it wouldn't have changed anything." He told her.
Lorelai nodded. "I know that now, but I didn't at the time."
"Well, if you know that now than why would what I had said about you and Spencer changed?" Aaron asked her.
Lorelai shrugged.
He went over to her and carefully took the knife from her and set it down before making her turn and look at him. "Talk." He told her firmly
"I just…" She started before stopping.
"You just what Lorelai?" He asked calmly.
She didn't answer. She didn't want to answer. The truth was she still had doubts. Over three years of therapy she still had doubts. Aaron had done so much to prove to her that he was not going anywhere, and she still had doubts. She couldn't help it, but she didn't want to tell him that.
"Lorelai. You know that keeping things inside doesn't do you any good." He told her.
"I know…" She told him.
"So, what is it? You can talk to me. I'm not going to be angry." He told her
She took a breathe. "I know it doesn't make any logical sense. My heart knows that its not true, but my head keeps me questioning when I'm going to wake up from this dream to the reality of my life." She told him.
Aaron nodded. "Lorelai. I understand. Things in your life has never seemed to be good for very long. I told you not long after coming to live with me that I will continue to prove to you that I am not going anywhere until you believe it. And that hasn't changed. I am your dad. I will forever be your dad. And a dad or any good parent for that matter never abandons their child. No matter how old they get. You will forever be my daughter and I will forever be there for you. Nothing you can do will change that. I can't promise I will always agree with your decisions however I will always have your back."
Lorelai nodded. "Do you agree with my decision to be with Spencer?" She asked.
"Yes. Of all the guys out there I -know Spencer will treat you right and take care of you." He told her.
Lorelai nodded.
"Lorelai. I am not going anywhere." He reiterated
She smiled a bit. "Anything else?" She asked
"No. You can get back to what you were doing." He told her
Lorelai went back to chopping up veggies for the salad.
Aaron went back to what he was doing too.
When she was done, she looked back up at her dad. "Dad."
Aaron looked over at her. "Yes?"
"I want you to know this feeling has nothing to do with you. You have never been anything but welcoming to me. Even on the first day at the FBI. I knew you doubted the director's decision. I knew I had to prove myself but that didn't change the fact that you made me feel welcome." She told him
Aaron smiled. "I didn't know you knew that."
"Well. I have been told I'm a good profiler." She smiled.
"Yes. You are a very good profiler. And you proved it very quickly to me. I could tell after the first case that you were good at your job and the director was right to bring you in." He told her.
Lorelai smiled. "When he spoke to me at my graduation, I had doubts that it was a good idea. I am very happy I agreed to it. I am a big believer in everything happens for a reason. The good and the bad. Clearly all this happened for a reason. And even though my brain sometimes still won't let me believe it. I know you are not going anywhere." She told him
Aaron nodded. "I will keep reminding you whenever you need to hear it."
Lorelai nodded.
"And I don't ever want you to be afraid to come talk to me about anything. Even the bad things." He told her.
She nodded. "I know. You don't like being lied to."
He smirked. "Good. You remember."
"Hard to forget when I've gotten my ass kicked pretty much every time you've caught me in a lie." She pointed out.
"Well than I guess neither of us have to worry about you ever lying to me again." He said
She sighed and rolled her eyes a bit. "You know I never go into a situation really intending to lie." She finished her statement but quickly realized she had messed up when she looked up to see her dad giving her his signature stare. He was not happy with her eye roll.
"Sorry." She said quickly.
He nodded and finished up dinner. The two of them got it on the table and called the other two to come and eat. They all sat down and had dinner.
Afterwards Rachel cleared the table and Jack helped as much as he could. Aaron had been starting to teach him how to help around the house with chores and helping clear the table had been one of his chores.
Lorelai went and grabbed her sketchbook. She turned to the last page where she was drawing her newest sketch. She had already made a mental note to get herself a new sketch pad soon.
Aaron sat down on the couch that was across from the chair Lorelai was sitting in. She could sense he was still annoyed with her. She took a breathe and put her sketchbook down and looked at him biting her lip.
"I'm really sorry." She said softly when she was met with his look.
"Do you realize how disrespectful that comes off as?" He asked
She looked down and nodded.
"And you still do it?" He asked
She looked back up. "I don't mean it to be disrespectful. I understand why you think it is, but I promise its not my intent."
"Okay. What do you intend it to come off as?" He asked
"Annoyed." She told him
"Okay. So why was my statement annoying?" He asked
"Because as I said I never intend to lie to you. Sometimes it just comes out before I realize what I am doing. Although it has been a while since I have lied to you." She pointed out
"So, the fact that you were dating Spencer and didn't tell me wasn't lying?" He asked
"No. I see that as keeping my dating life private. As an adult I feel like I have that right." She told him.
Aaron nodded. "Okay. I suppose that is fair." He agreed. "And I am glad that the lying has seemed to be less. However, I don't like when you roll your eyes. No matter what feeling you intend it to come off as."
Lorelai nodded. "I understand. I will try to be better about it."
Aaron nodded. "Okay. Its forgiven.
She smiled and nodded.
The night ended for Lorelai with her usual cup of tea. She said goodnight to her dad who was in his office before she headed to bed.
