"You have to take a bath." The sitter said as Lorelai walked into the family room
"NO!" Jack said again
"How about a shower?" She offered
"NO!" Jack said a third time
Lorelai went into the family room where the two were.
"Hi Mary." She said. Aaron had found a new sitter. Ms. Dancy was getting older and was having a harder time keeping up with Jack. He decided to give the fifteen-year-old neighbour who has just moved in a shot for afternoons until he or Lorelai weren't home. He had Jessica for overnights if it was necessary until he could find someone more permanent. Mary had been baby-sitting for about a month and up till now everything had gone well.
Lorelai looked at Jack. "Are you giving her a hard time Jack?"
"No. I just don't want to take a bath." Jack said
"Well don't think it matters if you -want to. And I heard her offer you a shower. You have two choices. Bath or shower. No is not a choice." Lorelai told him.
Jack stuck his tongue out and blew a raspberry at her.
Lorelai gave him an unimpressed stare, but he just looked away. Lorelai looked at Mary. "I'm sorry he's giving you a hard time. Did he behave otherwise?" She asked
"Um, Well. Not exactly." Mary said
"What did he do?" Lorelai asked.
"Has basically said no to everything I have asked him to do. Picking up his backpack and coat from the front door. Doing his homework. Turning off the tv for dinner…" Mary said
Lorelai nodded. "Jack. TV off. Now." She told him
Jack just ignored her. Lorelai took a breathe and went and took the remote and turned it off. Jack started to scream.
Lorelai led Mary out of the room away from the screaming child. There was nothing she could do till he stopped screaming so she was just going to let him have his fit.
"I am so sorry. I will let my dad know what happened." Lorelai told the slightly younger girl
Mary nodded. "He has never been like this." Mary told her
Lorelai nodded. "Its not your fault, kids have bad days. Not an excuse to ignore what you're telling him to do just a fact of life we all have bad days. Kids just don't know how to regulate their feelings." Lorelai told her.
Mary nodded. "Makes sense."
Lorelai nodded. "Did Rachel get home?" She asked
"Yup. She just went to her room I think." Mary was not responsible for Rachel since Rachel was thirteen she was okay for a few hours to look after herself, but Lorelai figured she'd ask if she had seen her.
"Okay thanks. My dad will email transfer you your pay." Lorelai told her letting the girl leave and get away from the screaming child.
Rachel had come out of her room when she heard the screaming. "What is up with him?" She asked her older sister
"Apparently been telling the sitter no all afternoon. I came in turned the TV off when I found out he has been watching all afternoon and well, he's not happy. Don't worry I've got it." Lorelai told her. She went into the family room. He was starting to calm down.
"You calm enough to talk now?" Lorelai asked him
He started to scream again. Lorelai sighed. "If you are going to continue to throw a fit you can go to your room." She told him.
Jack refused just kept screaming. Lorelai did the only thing she could think of and that was to pick the six-year-old up and carry him to his room and set him on his bed. He fought her the entire way. "You stay here till you are ready to talk. You do not come out of this room. You are already in -big trouble." She told her little brother before she left the room.
She went back downstairs. Where Rachel was putting the rest of dinner away. "Figured I should clean up. Dad's plate is in the microwave he is on his way home."
Lorelai nodded. "Did you text him about Jack?"
"No. I figured you could tell him when he gets home." Rachel told her
Lorelai nodded. "Good idea."
"How was therapy?" Rachel asked
"Good. Getting stronger did more today than normal." Lorelai told her.
"You're going to get full use back?" Rachel asked
"I should yes." Lorelai told her
Rachel nodded looking guilty.
"Rachel. I'm not angry at you. This was an accident, and you were put in a really bad position by someone. This is not your fault." Lorelai told her hugging her sister.
"I know but still. I did push you." Rachel said
"Yes. You have said sorry. I'm going to be fine, so I don't want you to feel guilty about it anymore okay?" Lorelai told her
Rachel nodded.
They both heard a loud crash from upstairs. Lorelai let her sister go and ran upstairs and opened Jack's door. There was a frame on the floor broken in half. Lorelai went to pick it up. Clearly it had been thrown against the wall. It was a frame that sat on the boy's dresser. It held a drawing that Lorelai had drawn of her and Jack playing. She took a deep breathe she knew he had done that in hopes to hurt her feeling and it did a little, but she reminded herself that he was just a kid. She took the pieces of frame and the drawing with her leaving the room. Jack wasn't injured and she didn't want him to see a reaction out of her. She went back downstairs and heard the front door open.
"Hey dad." She said as she came down the stairs.
"Hey. What's that?" he asked?
Lorelai showed him.
"What happened did it fall?" He asked
"No… Um I don't think so." She said. "It was halfway across the room from its spot."
Aaron looked confused.
"Jack's angry with me." Lorelai told him
Aaron sighed. "What happened?"
"Why don't you come in. Sit down. Have a beer. You're going to need one." She said
"That bad huh?" He asked
Lorelai walked away not giving him anymore information yet.
Aaron went into the kitchen and grabbed a beer and sat at the table. "Someone tell me. Now." He said
Lorelai sat with him and told him everything that had happened. What the sitter had told her and what had happened since she had been home. "I tried talking to him. He just screamed some more. I put him in his room to calm down. The screaming seemed to stop but than the loud bang that came when he threw this at the wall."
Aaron listened to his eldest daughter. "I will deal with it." He told her. "Thank you. You did everything right." He added.
Lorelai nodded she wanted to say something but didn't want to overstep.
Aaron could see in her eyes she had more to say. "Something more I should know?"
"Nope." Lorelai said
"Lorelai. I know when your lying."
"Not really lying. Just. I don't want to overstep." She said
"I wont be angry just tell me." Aaron said
"Can I talk to him first? Not going to try and parent him, but I want him to know that this." She pointed to the frame. "Hurt my feelings." She said
Aaron listened. "How about this. I will talk to him first. Deal with him and than you two can talk."
Lorelai nodded. "Okay."
Aaron hugged his daughter. He looked up at Rachel. "How was your day?" He asked
"Maybe you should have a few more sips of beer." Rachel said
Aaron looked at her with a raise eyebrow. "Talk. Now." He told her.
"I flunked a math test…" She said
Aaron nodded. "Okay. Did you study?" he asked
"Um. Well…" Rachel started
Lorelai took the opportunity to leave them alone she did not want to be in that room at the moment.
Aaron pointed to the spot Lorelai had been sitting and Rachel joined him
"I assume this wasn't a pop quiz?" He questioned
"No… It wasn't." Rachel answered
"How long did you know about it?" He asked
"Three weeks." Rachel said
"Did you study at all?" He asked
Rachel looked down and didn't answer.
"I will -not ask again Rachel." He said
"No…I didn't. I kept putting it off and…I ran out of time." Rachel said
Aaron nodded. "I know I told you that your grades came second to your mental and physical health. That does not mean I don't expect you to study and try. You have been spending a lot of time with friends, and that's good I want you to have friend but, if its interfering with your schoolwork your going to have to cut down on time spent with them." He told her calmly
Rachel nodded.
"Was this a big test?" He asked
Rachel shrugged. "Worth about 5% of my grade so no. And the teacher did say that he takes the worst test grade for each student at the end of the year and throws it out." She said
Aaron nodded. "Okay. That doesn't mean you don't need to try though." He said
Rachel nodded. "I promise I will be more diligent in the future."
Aaron nodded. "Do I need to sign the test?" He asked
Rachel nodded and pulled it out of her bag that was on the table and gave it to him.
Aaron signed it. "Do you have a schedule of tests and such for the year?" He asked
Rachel shook her head.
"Okay. Do you have any other tests that you didn't study for?" He asked
"No." She answered.
"When is your next test?" He asked
"Two days from now. Science. I have been studying and will continue to." She told him
Aaron nodded. "Okay. Until I see your next three tests come back at the grade I know you can achieve no friends during the week." He told her
Rachel sighed. "Okay." She figured it could be much worse.
"Your dinner is in the microwave." She told him
Aaron smiled and kissed his head. "Thank you." He said. He ate his dinner and finished his beer before going upstairs to talk to his son.
He knocked on his door and went in. Jack was sitting on his bed playing with some superhero action figures.
"Hi Jack." He said to his son sitting on his bed next to him
"Hi daddy." Jack said
"Do you want to tell me what happened today that made you act the way you did?" Aaron asked him
Jack shrugged.
"Did you have a good day at school?" Aaron asked
Jack nodded.
"Was Mary mean to you?" He asked
Jack shook his head.
"Why didn't you listen to her than? You know she was in charge." Aaron said to his son
Jack shrugged.
"Were you tired?" He asked he was trying to figure out what sparked this behaviour from his normally well behaved six-year-old.
Jack shook his head.
Aaron nodded. "Jack look at me please."
Jack looked up from his toys to his daddy who had an unimpressed look on his face.
"You just choice not to listen to her because you didn't want to do the things you were supposed to?" He asked his son his tone of voice indicating he was not happy with the boy.
The boy looked down.
Aaron took a breathe. "Jack Hotchner I am very disappointed in you."
Jack started to cry. He didn't like when his daddy was mad at him. And he had used his full name, so he was really mad at him in Jack's eyes. Aaron picked him up and sat him in his lap. He waited for the boy to calm down.
"Jack you are old enough to know better. When the babysitter or Lorelai or any adult who you know you can trust tells you to do something you do it. And when you don't get your way you do not throw things or throw a fit." He told him sternly
Jack nodded and looked up at his daddy with sad eyes.
Aaron looked at his son. "And you know when you do something wrong there are consequences." He told his son.
Jack nodded.
Aaron took a breathe and put his son across his lap. He gave his butt half a dozen quick swats, and the boy was already sobbing. Aaron picked him back up and wrapped him in a hug. After a couple minutes the boy stopped crying. Aaron looked at him. "It is time for a bath. While I get it ready I want you to go find Lorelai." He told his son.
Jack's eyes went big. "She's mad at me too!" He said
"She's not happy that you threw the picture. You need to go talk to her." He told his son as he gently nudged him towards her room where he saw the lights on.
Jack went and knocked on the door softly.
"Come in." Lorelai said
Jack went in looking very sad and apologetic.
Lorelai was fitting the picture into a new frame on her bed.
"Hey Jack." She said. "Come sit." She said patting her bed
Jack went over and climbed up on to her bed.
Lorelai took a breathe. "I know you threw this picture because you were angry with me and were trying to hurt my feelings." She told her brother. "And it worked. I worked very hard to draw this picture because I love you and because one of my favorite ways to spend time with you is to play with you." She continued.
Jack looked down. "I'm sorry." He said
"Its okay to be angry when someone is upset or angry with us. But we don't throw things. You could have gotten hurt. You could have damaged the wall. And you did break the frame." She told him
Jack nodded.
"I know you're sorry. And I know this is a big lesson for you to understand but when you do something that hurts someone's feelings even if you're sorry it doesn't change what you did." She told him
Jack nodded tearing up again. Lorelai picked up her little brother and gave him a hug. "Now you didn't damage the actual picture and yes the frame is replaceable, and I do believe you're sorry, so I forgive you." She told him
Jack nodded.
"But understand that might not always be the case. When you are angry from now on I want you to take a few breathes to calm down okay?" She asked
Jack nodded and hugged his big sister
Lorelai smiled at him and noticed Aaron standing in the door.
"His bath is ready all done?" He asked
Lorelai nodded and set him down.
Jack went with daddy to have his bath and get ready for bed.
Lorelai went and put the new frame with the picture back on Jack's dresser. She knew he was sorry and felt bad for what he did she wasn't going to take back the gift she had given him.
She went back to her room and got into her class work.
After putting Jack to bed, Aaron went and knocked on Lorelai's door.
"Yes" She said
Aaron went in. "I see you put the picture back." He said
"He said he was sorry I believe him." She said
Aaron nodded "Of course. Where did the frame come from?" He asked
"I have a bunch of extra ones. I buy them in bulk because I have been using a lot and its cheaper." She had been making drawing and framing them and giving them to people recently. She had finally felt secure to share her drawing with a few people
Aaron nodded. "If you want I pay for the broken frame." He said
Lorelai shook her head. "The frames aren't expensive."
"You okay?" He asked.
Lorelai nodded. "He's just a kid. He reacted the way a kid does."
Aaron nodded. "But your not. You told me it hurt your feelings." He said
Lorelai nodded. "But we talked I'm okay now."
Aaron nodded.
"To change the subject. I'm bringing coffee for the team tomorrow going to tell them all about the criminology master's." She said
Aaron smiled. "What made you decide to do that?"
"Spencer. He showed up at my physical therapy appointment. Than we went out to the chinese place for dinner, I told him, and he convinced me that I should tell the rest of the family." She said
Aaron nodded. "How's it coming by the way? Do I need to get on you to do your work too?" He asked with a smile
Lorelai chuckled. "I can show you my grades if you want to see dad."
Aaron smiled. He trusted his daughter, but he -was curious. He looked over her shoulder as she pulled up her grades from the entire program. He was impressed. "Have you gotten below a 90 on anything?" He asked as she scrolled through.
She stopped. "Nope." She said quickly.
Aaron knew she was lying. "You know I don't expect you to be perfect. Clearly you have been working hard. One or two grades below a 90% is not a bad thing." He said
"Yup. I know." She said quickly.
"Than why are you lying?" He asked
"I'm not…" She said
Aaron turned her chair, so she was facing him. "Look me in the eyes and tell me that." He said
Lorelai looked down.
"If you are lying to me it makes me think something big has happened." He said
Lorelai turned back around and scrolled though the grades to one far back. It was a 60%.
"Okay. That must have been awhile ago." He said he noticed there were dates next to the grades he looked and saw the date. It was just a few days after Hailey had been murdered.
Aaron turned her chair back around and wrapped her in a hug. "I know she was important to you too. You don't have to avoid bringing her up." He told her
Lorelai hugged him. "Sorry. I just don't want you to be sad."
Aaron smiled a bit at her. "Sadness is a part of life. Of course, I miss her. But that's the way it works when people we care about die" he told her.
"I know. Trust me I get that but doesn't mean I want to be the cause." She said
"You know I think about her everyday. But I try and remember the good memories. And I see the wonderful things that came from our marriage. And that is Jack. And I think about how even though you and Rachel were not her daughters she took you girls shopping. She came to each of your birthdays." He said
Lorelai smiled. "She took the blame when Rachel and I got into a pillow fight and broke the lamp."
Aaron laughed. "That was you two huh?" He said
Lorelai nodded. "Well technically I was the one who broke it."
Aaron shook his head with a smile. "I cant believe you all got away with that. But that is definitely something she would do."
"She wouldn't tell me how, but she told me she knew how to keep things from you." Lorelai said with a chuckle.
Aaron raised an eyebrow. "Oh really?"
"Like I said she wouldn't tell me how and trust me I tried to get her to tell me. She told me I didn't need to know how to lie to you." She said
Aaron smiled. "Good." He stood up "If you ever want to talk about her you can come talk to me."
Lorelai nodded and smiled.
She turned back around and got back to work.
Aaron went downstairs where Rachel was studying. "How's it going?" He asked
"Fine. I think I will do fine." She said
"Good." He sat down with her "Can we talk?"
Rachel looked up. "Yeah."
"Lorelai made me realize that we don't talk about Hailey much. I know she meant a lot to you, and I don't want you to feel that you cant talk to me about her." He told her
Rachel smiled. "I miss her sometimes, but I guess that's the part of loving someone, that sucks. Is when they aren't around anymore."
Aaron nodded "What is your favorite memory of her?" He asked
Rachel smiled. "I have two. She took me and Lorelai to get our nails done and the manicurist trying to stop me from getting black because I was just eleven. Hailey told them off saying that the only person who gets to tell me what color I was or wasn't allowed to get was me. That it was my nails. It was the first time I felt like a 'mother' stood up for me. And the second… Lorelai and I were having a pillow fight one day when you weren't here and broke the lamp. Hailey took the blame for it saying she bumped into it."
Aaron smiled. "You and Lorelai have that favorite memory in common."
Rachel chuckled. "She told us that kids should get away with things once in awhile."
Aaron chuckled. "That was very much like her."
Both of them nodded. "Its getting late maybe you should get to bed?" He suggested
Rachel packed up her stuff. "Okay. Good night dad."
"Good night Rachel."
Rachel went up to her room for the night.
Lorelai came downstairs with a frame with one of her drawings in it and went and put it on the mantel on the fireplace in the family room. It was a picture of the four of them with Hailey. Someone had snapped a picture of them at Lorelai's 17th birthday and Lorelai drew it when she thought the two of them might get back together. When she passed away Lorelai couldn't bear to even look at the picture.
Aaron came over and saw it. "When did you draw that?" He asked
"When she was coming around a lot… I actually thought you two might have gotten back together…" She told him
Aaron tilted his head at his daughter. "That wouldn't have happened. We were friends since we were teenagers which is why we still got along but our marriage ended for a reason. I was distant. I wasn't around enough."
"But you've changed. She saw that too. She told me so." Lorelai told him
"Really?" He asked
Lorelai nodded. "But I know she wouldn't want you to be alone forever because of it."
"Okay enough of that." He told his daughter. "I will not discuss that part of my life with my daughter." He added
"No. That's fine. Just I don't want you to be alone forever. You deserve to be happy to." She told him
Aaron smiled "thank you, but I am happy. If I meet someone some day than I will be open to a relationship but that doesn't mean I will discuss it with you." He told her.
Lorelai smiled and nodded. The two of them said their good nights and went to their own rooms.
