Lorelai sat at the office late one night. No one else from the team was there. She was looking into the foster home her former foster sister was in. The foster sister who kept emailing her blaming her and saying the abuse that she went thought was all Lorelai's fault. Lorelai realized that something had to be really wrong in her home because clearly she was screaming for help and even though Lorelai thought she as in a really good home maybe there was more going on behind closed door than it seemed.
She was running a background check on the foster parents and their extended family and there was nothing. They seemed to be really good people. She knew there was someone who knew how to do a better background check, so she texted Penny.
'Any chance you are still in your office?' She asked
Penny was at home making herself popcorn when her phone buzzed. She looked at the text and responded. 'No. Why?' Penny asked
'I need a deep background check done and I know there is no one better than you for that.' Lorelai responded when her phone dinged
Penny made a confused face. 'What case?' she asked
'It's not actually a case. A former foster sister I get the feeling there might be something going on in her foster home and I have done the basic background check, but I haven't been able to find anything I know you're far better than me and can check deeper.' Lorelai told her
'Does anyone on the team know about this?' Penny asked
'Well, they know that I keep an eye on my former foster siblings. It's just computer stuff I'm not planning to go to the foster home. If something comes up from the background check I will involve the others. I promise.' Lorelai said. Which was true.
Penny sighed. 'Fine but I promise if you do something stupid I will end you.' Penny told her
Lorelai chuckled. 'I promise I wont do anything stupid.'
'I will come in early tomorrow give me the names I need.' Penny said
Lorelai thanked her and sent her the names before closing down her computer and heading home.
She walked into the house music blaring, the babysitter chasing Jack who was screaming and a huge mess. It took her a few seconds to register what was going on. The music was coming from the living room where she found Rachel. She turned the music off. "Why is this so loud?" She asked
"Because I'd rather hear that then the screaming." Rachel said
"And you think the loud music is helping anything?" Lorelai asked
"I tried to help you think he listens to me better than the babysitter. There is a reason dad doesn't leave me with Jack." Rachel pointed out
Lorelai grabbed Jack as he ran past her. "And that is enough of your screaming." She said sternly
Jack sulked. "She's mean!" he said pointing to the sitter who had come into the room too.
"Oh really?" Lorelai asked Jack. "How is she mean?"
"She is making me go to bed." Jack said
Lorelai looked at the time. "Well seeing as it is your bedtime that's not being mean that is doing what she is supposed to. Now you will co-operate with her and go to bed or there will be consequences you don't like." She told her little brother before handing him back off to the sitter.
The sitter took him and went off. She turned to Rachel. "Where dad?" She asked
"He said he was going out with a friend." Rachel said
"Which friend?" Lorelai asked
"No idea. Got the feeling it was a date. He was dressed up nicely and had cologne on." Rachel said
"What?" Lorelai asked with a smirk. "A date? Really?"
"Cant say 100% that's what his doing just a guess." Rachel said
Lorelai chuckled. "Well good for him if he is."
"I guess." Rachel said
"What. You don't think dad deserves to be happy?" Lorelai asked
"Well yes. It's just…" Rachel started
"He is not trying to replace anyone you realize that right?" Lorelai asked
Rachel nodded. "I do. I just miss her."
"I miss her too." Lorelai said giving her sister a hug
They hugged and when they broke Lorelai took a breathe. "The next time the sitter is having a problem and you cant help you don't make it harder on her by blaring the music. How do you think dad will react if he finds out?" Lorelai asked
Rachel sighed. "He will be pissed."
"Why didn't you call me? I would have come home earlier if I knew there was a problem." Lorelai asked
"I figured you were busy with a case or something." Rachel said
"I could have continued what I was doing tomorrow. Next time call me." Lorelai told her
Rachel nodded.
Lorelai heard screaming from upstairs and she went up and went into Jack's room where he was running around the room to get away from the exhausted looking sitter. Lorelai looked at the sitter and motioned for her to come out of the room. She could deal with Jack later.
The sitter and her left Jack's room. "Sorry about him. Was it just since you said it was time for bed he has been giving you a hard time?" Lorelai asked her
The sitter nodded. "Yes. He was great before that."
Lorelai nodded. "Well, I can take it from here. You can go. You seem exhausted. Ill let my dad know what happened tonight." She told the sitter
"Thanks." The sitter said before she left.
Once the sitter left Lorelai went back into Jack's room where he was sitting on the floor playing with some blocks. She took a breathe. "Its bed time. Get into bed. Now." She told her
"No." Jack said. "I'm playing." Jack told his big sister
"You have till I get to three to get into that bed." Lorelai told him "One" she started counting Jack didn't budge.
"Two." Lorelai continued
Jack ignored her.
"Three." Lorelai said. She walked over to him picked him up and put him in his bed. She took the toy that was still in his hands and put it with the others.
Jack started to scream and got off his bed
Lorelai didn't want to have to do this, but she knew she didn't have a choice. She swatted his butt once and put him back in bed.
Jack stopped screaming. Lorelai hadn't done more than shocked him.
"You get out of that bed for any reason other than having to pee before tomorrow morning and you will be getting more swats understood?" She asked him sternly.
Jack nodded.
Lorelai tucked him in and kissed his head. "I love you." She told him. She left the room making sure his night light was on. She went back downstairs.
"You do your homework?" Lorelai asked Rachel
"Yeah. Dad already checked it." Rachel told her
Lorelai nodded.
"There is dinner if you're hungry." Rachel told him
"Thanks. I ate already." She told her before she went off the shower. When she got out she checked on Jack who was asleep. Lorelai went back downstairs and started her tea.
Aaron came in the door from his date with this new women. He had gone back and forth about whether or not he should date her. He was glad Dave had convinced him to give her a chance. He had, had a good time. The house was quiet when he came in. He found his two girls sitting on the couch and talking.
"Hello." He said
Lorelai looked up. "Hey dad. How was your evening?"
Aaron smiled. "Good. You let the sitter go?"
Lorelai nodded. "Yes. About that…" She started
Aaron sighed. "What happened?" He asked
"Well, I came home, and Jack was screaming and running away from the sitter. He didn't want to go to bed. I picked him up and told him to listen and handed him back to the sitter she took his upstairs. I was talking to Rachel and heard him scream from upstairs. I went up and he was running around his room. I pulled the sitter out of the room and told her she could go. She looked exhausted. I went in and Jack was playing with his toys. I told him to get into bed he refused I picked him up and put him in bed and he started to scream and got out of bed. I did what I had to, to get him to stay in bed. He is asleep now." She told him
Aaron nodded. "Was he giving her a hard time all night?"
"Apparently not. It was just when it came to bed." Lorelai told him
"Okay." Aaron said
"And I did try and help he didn't listen to me either." Rachel told him
"Thank you for trying Rachel." Aaron said
"You got home late if it was just when Jack was getting ready for bed." Aaron said
Lorelai sighed. "Yeah. I was doing something"
"Care to share?" Aaron asked
"Nope." Lorelai said
"Alright. I seriously hope you aren't doing something you shouldn't." He told her
"Nothing you wouldn't do." Lorelai said
Aaron nodded. "Alright." He looked to Rachel. "You should head to bed."
Rachel nodded and got up saying good night and heading up to bed.
Aaron sat with Lorelai
"So how was your date?" She asked with a smirk
Aaron raised an eyebrow. "How did you know?"
"I can smell the cologne." She said
"Is it that strong?" He asked
"Well. Yes. Not bad though." She said
"Don't tell Rachel." He said. "I don't want her to get any ideas."
"Well. Actually she… knows." Lorelai said, "Well she suspects I guess is the better way to phrase it."
"Oh?" Aaron asked
"She smelt the cologne before you left. She mentioned to me that she thought it must me a date." Lorelai said
"Oooh, so you didn't actually smell the cologne." He said
"Well, yes I do but Rachel already had me questioning" She said
Aaron nodded. "Okay I will talk to her about it than." He got up and went and knocked on her bedroom door.
"Yes." Rachel said.
Aaron went in. "Lorelai told me." He said
"Oh. I'm sorry wont happen again." She said think he meant about the music
Aaron tilted his head and made a confused face.
"uh…Okay what did she tell you?" Rachel asked
"What do you think she told me?" Aaron asked having a feeling there was something his daughters were hiding.
Rachel looked down clearly Lorelai hadn't told him what she though. "I'd rather not say…"
Aaron left the room and called downstairs. "Lorelai. Come here. Now."
Lorelai heard the tone in his voice. She got up and went upstairs. "What?" She asked
"Something you want to tell me?" He asked arms crossed
"Um. I don't know…" She said. She noticed Rachel peaking out her room mouthing "Sorry"
"What did you choose to leave out about tonight?" He asked
Lorelai closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose. "Oh. That." She said.
"What is -that?" He asked
Lorelai sighed. "When I got home the screaming was not the only noise. There was loud music playing…" She said
Aaron looked back towards his other daughter. He knew she was peaking out of her room. "Why was there loud music playing?"
"The screaming was… Giving me a headache. The music drowned it out a bit…" Rachel said
"I thought you said you tried to help." Aaron said
"I did. At first. But the screaming went on for over half an hour…" Rachel said
"And you think music blaring helped the sitter?" Aaron asked
"No sir." Rachel said
He looked to his eldest daughter. "I'm surprised you choose not to tell me. I'm disappointed." He said
Lorelai nodded. "Yes sir. I'm sorry." She said softly. It wasn't often that Lorelai got in trouble at home, and he used that dreaded word that no one liked to hear from their parents. Disappointed.
"Rachel go to bed. We will discuss this more in the morning." Aaron said
Rachel did as she was told.
He looked back at Lorelai. "I am going to shower. Afterwards you are I will have a discussion." He told her
Lorelai nodded and went and sat on the couch downstairs.
Aaron showered before he came downstairs and sat across from her. "You want to tell me why you didn't tell me?" He had calmed down some
"I had already told her off. I didn't see the point. I think she was a little sad too." Lorelai said
"Sad about what?" Aaron asked
"Missing Hailey. I figured if she was right, and you were on a date I didn't want to have to explain that it might have made her think about Hailey and make you decide not to go on a second date with the woman." She said
Aaron nodded. "Oh." He said
"I know I still should have told you. I'm sorry." Lorelai said
Aaron nodded.
"Because you deserve to be happy I don't think Hailey would want you to be happy too." Lorelai said
Aaron smiled and nodded. "You're right. I'm sorry I didn't give you a chance to explain before I came down on you. I still wish you had been upfront, but I understand why you didn't." He said
Lorelai nodded and looked down she was holding back tears. She had already been dealing with a lot with her former foster siblings emails and disappointed her dad now she hated it.
Aaron went over and gave her a hug.
Lorelai hugged him tight.
"It's forgiven." Aaron told her
Lorelai sighed and nodded. "There is something I should tell you. Something about Rachel and her biological family." She said
Aaron pulled away from the hug and looked at her. "Something she told you?" He asked
"No. Something Rebecca told me. Something she found out about her biological parents." She told him
"Tell me." He said
"Rebecca found out her biological father is the former chief and biological mother was Jessica." She said. "Means one of them must be Rachel's biological uncle or aunt." Lorelai said
"Wow. Didn't expect that." Aaron said
"Yeah. Apparently he did an ancestry thing too and matched with Rebecca. If he is Rachel's biological uncle it will show up. Rebecca only found out Jessica was her biomother because he told her." Lorelai said
Aaron nodded "I guess its good that Rachel doesn't have access to it without my permission anymore. But I will look into it. Thank you for telling me."
Lorelai nodded. "I love her. I don't want her to be hurt if I can avoid it."
"You want to tell me what you were doing at the office now?" He asked
"Not really." Lorelai said
"I have noticed you have seemed distracted lately. I'm concerned." He said
"Has my work been affected?" He asked
"Well. No. I don't think so." He said
"Than don't worry about it." She said
"I am just trying to help Lorelai." Aaron said
"I don't need your help." She said getting up and walking away. She want up to her room. She was tired and ready for bed and didn't want to deal with it right now.
Aaron sighed and turned off all the lights before heading up to bed as well.
