Lorelai sat on the floor of her bathroom and sobbed. Her heart was breaking into a million pieces. She couldn't believe what had just happened. Her and Spencer had been through a lot together and still somehow always ended up figuring things out. This time was clearly very different.
Spencer drove to Derek's place and went and buzzed up. Spencer identified himself when Derek asked, and he was let in. Derek could tell by the look on his face that something was wrong.
"Spencer what's wrong?" He asked leading him to the couch
"I just had to break up with Lorelai." He said as he sat down.
Derek was surprised but he went and grabbed a beer for the younger man and brought it to him.
Spencer took the beer and held it in between his hands. He didn't want to take a sip just yet.
"What happened?" Derek asked
"This last case. I cant take the fear of not knowing what she is going to do next. Yes I will still worry but it will be easier if we aren't romantically involved. I asked her if she could promise me that she wont ignore an order again and she wouldn't promise. So, I had to ask for space." He said
Derek nodded. "I imagine it's hard. I couldn't imagine if Penny worked in the field. How I would feel. Especially if she was taking the risks that Lorelai takes."
"I didn't want to break up with her. We both know I don't have a lot of experience, but I don't think I could love anyone more." Spencer said
Derek nodded.
"Derek. Did I do the right thing?" Spencer asked
"Man, I don't know. That's something only you can know." Derek said
Spencer nodded and took a swig of the beer. "Morgan. I'm sorry I acted the way I did about you sending JJ to the hospital with her."
Derek shook his head. "It's forgiven."
Spencer nodded a bit.
"Maybe you two just need some space. You spend a lot of time together. And work a high intense job. She is off for a couple weeks so you can take that time to yourself and see how you feel after that." Derek suggested.
Spencer nodded. "I'm hoping so."
Rebecca came out of the bedroom and narrowed her eyes when he saw Spencer. Derek saw it.
"Okay. I take it Lorelai called you." Derek said
"Yes. She did. And I am going over there. To try and help mend the heart that HE broke." Becca said
"Okay. You only know half the story. But go. Be with your friend." Derek told her
"I know enough." She said in an annoyed tone before she left.
Derek looked at Spencer. "Don't take that personally."
Spencer shook his head. "Hard not to." He took another swig from his beer.
"There are basically sisters. They will always have each others back in a breakup even if no one was in the wrong." He said
"Are you picking a side?" Spencer asked
"Nope. I care about both of you. And I understand you are both hurting right now." Derek told him
Spencer nodded. "Good. I don't want you to hate her. Or me for that matter."
"I don't." Derek said. "I made a decision when you two started dating. Unless someone cheated or intentionally hurt the other I will never pick a side."
Spencer nodded.
Rebecca knocked on the door at the Hotchner house.
Aaron opened it. "Hey Becca. Come on in." He said. He wasn't expecting her. He figured maybe she was here to see Lorelai
"You here for Lorelai? She's in her room resting." He said
"Did she tell you what Spencer did?" Becca asked clear annoyance still in her voice
Aaron made a face. Clearly confused.
"He broke up with her." Becca said
"What? Why?" Aaron asked
"Because he couldn't handle who she is anymore apparently." Rebecca said before she headed up to her room and went in without knocking.
Aaron was surprised. He wanted to go to her but knew if she wanted him she would have told him.
Rebecca climbed into the bed and wrapped her arms around her friend who was sobbing uncontrollably.
"Hey. Its going to be okay. You've gotten through far worse. You will get through this." Becca told her
Lorelai just continued to sob as Rebecca held her and tried to calm her down. Becca wasn't going anywhere. She just laid there with her friend.
Aaron went into the kitchen where Rachel was just finishing up her homework.
"Spencer was a big help." She said
Aaron nodded. "I'm glad." The man had mixed feelings about the whole situation. He knew Spencer was a good man. But his daughter was hurting now, and it was because of him. Aaron knew Spencer had to have had a good reason. He knew how much Spencer loved his daughter. This was all just so confusing.
"Rachel. We are going to make Lorelai's favorite. Carrot Cake. And order in her favorite food." He said
Rachel looked up. "Why?"
"You know how to make the carrot cake?" He asked ignoring her question
"I do. Why. Is Lorelai okay?" She asked
"Rach. Don't ask questions. Just please do it." Aaron told his daughter
Rachel nodded and went and started to pull things out of the cupboard and fridge.
"Do you have everything you need?" Aaron asked
Rachel nodded. "Yes."
Aaron kissed her head. "I'm sure Lorelai will tell you what's going on soon. She didn't even tell me. Becca did."
Rachel nodded. "Did they break up?"
"You're too smart for your own good." Aaron said with a smile
"Sorry. I'll get to making the cake." She said
"Thank you." He said
He got Jack set up with a movie and asked Rachel to keep an eye on him and if she had trouble to get Becca before he left and went to pick up the food.
Rachel finishing prepping and got the cake into the oven before checking that Jack was still watching the movie. Which he was.
A little while later Lorelai could smell the carrot cake baking. She looked at Becca. "Did you tell my dad?"
Becca nodded. "Sorry.." She said
Lorelai shook her head. "It's okay. He is obviously trying to help with food. I smell carrot cake."
Becca smiled. "I smell it too. Do you think he is the one baking it?"
Lorelai chuckled. "Only if he wanted to poison us. Its Rachel most likely."
Becca smiled. "Hey a laugh. Good."
Lorelai sighed and wiped at her eyes a bit.
"So, what exactly happened?" Becca asked
"He tried to make me promise I wont ignore an order again. When I said I couldn't do that he broke up with me because its 'to hard' to be romantically involved with me if I'm going to keep taking 'unnecessary" risks." Lorelai told her friend
Rebecca shook her head. "He knew you when you started dating. He shouldn't have gotten involved if he couldn't handle it." Becca said
Lorelai nodded. "The job we do comes with risks. I understand why they don't want agents dating each other. Can never end well."
"Well than. I guess its time for you to move on?" Rebecca asked
"No… I don't want to…" She said
"Why not?" Becca asked with a smile
Lorelai sighed
"Because you still love him?" Becca offered
"More than anything." Lorelai said
"Well, I'm not telling you to change. But in relationships compromises have to be made. Yes your job comes with risks but…." Becca said
"So, your siding with him?" Lorelai asked
"No. Of course not. I just want you to be happy. He makes you happy. And if you want to make the relationship work you will have to make a compromise." Becca said
Lorelai nodded and sat up.
"Give it a few days. Take some time for yourself. Don't jump back into it before you have had time to think. Maybe we can go get our nails done? Girl time?" Becca suggested
Lorelai nodded. "You're right. Girls day sounds great."
Becca smiled. "Good. Now what do you need?"
"Probably should eat and drink some water." Lorelai said
The two ladies went downstairs as Aaron came in carrying bags of the takeout.
"Hey. How are you feeling?" Aaron asked
Lorelai shrugged. "Hungry."
"Well, I got food." He said going to the kitchen and setting the food on the counter.
The table had been set and the cake was on the counter cooling
Rachel and Jack came into the kitchen.
Aaron got the food out of the bags and put it on the table, and everyone sat and ate.
When they were done Lorelai started to clear up.
"I've got it Lor." Aaron said
"I'm sad not incapable of cleaning up." Lorelai said
"I know. You just don't need to right now." Aaron said
"Dad. I'm cleaning the table. Now drop it." Lorelai said walking away with a stack of dishes from the table.
Aaron dropped it. It wasn't worth the fight. And if she wanted to, he wasn't going to stop her.
When she was done she went back upstairs.
Rebecca went with her, and Rachel went and added the icing to the carrot cake.
Jack looked up at his dad. "Why is Lorelai sad?"
Aaron sighed "Its along story buddy."
Lorelai sat on her bed rubbing at her shoulder.
"How bad is the pain?" Becca asked her
"Seven." Lorelai said
"Were you given any pain killers?" Becca asked
"No. I don't need it." Lorelai said
"Lor. Don't be a hero. Take the pain killers." Becca said
"I wasn't given any. I refused them." Lorelai said
"What about Advil or Tylenol?" Becca asked going to her bathroom and open the medicine cabinet and found a bottle of prescribed pain killers. "What are these?" Becca asked with a raised eyebrow
"Oh. Those are left over from one of the other times I was hurt." Lorelai said
Becca looked at the date on them. "Not expired yet. How about one of these than?"
"No." Lorelai said crawling under the blankets and curling up
Becca sighed. "Okay. I cant make you." She put the bottle of pain killers away. She sat with her
"So. What's next for you Becca?" Lorelai asked
"Wow. That's direct." Becca said
"Yeah well I need a distraction. So, tell me." Lorelai said
"Fine. But keep it to yourself. You know I've finished my collage courses online. What you don't know is I have applied to law schools. All over the country." Becca said
"Oh. Wow. You sure your ready for that? I mean possibly moving away." Lorelai said
"I don't know. But I know that the best schools have already declined me. Harvard and Yale." Becca said
"Well, you don't need to go to a top school to be a top lawyer." Lorelai said
"I know." Becca said
"And you know there is someone…just downstairs. Who went to Georgetown law. A good school. Very close." Lorelai said
"Lor. No. I have to do this myself." Becca said
"Okay. But take it from someone who refused help far to often. Its okay to ask for help." Lorelai told her friend.
The girls continued to talk till they were told that the cake was ready.
They both went down and had cake before they decided to watch a movie. They ended the night when the movie finished.
