Julianna sat in the principals office her heart pounding out of her chest while she waited with Ms. Dalton for her dad to show up. She had been living with David for almost a year and she had yet to get into any trouble. Till today. Today had started off bad. She woke up tired having not slept well and was already grumpy before school. Than she got to school and her best friend who kept the bullies away wasn't there meaning she was getting heavily picked on. Than they started a new unit in math and Jules and math never really got along so she got frustrated. Her teacher saw her getting frustrated and tried to help her, but it just made Julianna even more frustrated, and she ended up throwing a fit and threw a pencil at the board at the front of the class almost hitting the teacher in the process. She had been sent to the office after that.
The team had been working on a case in Philadelphia when David got the call. He quickly got himself a car and headed home after telling Hotch what was going on. Aaron understood and had no issues telling him to go and take care of his daughter. Dave drove the two hours and got to the school around lunch time. He went inside and to the office where the principal was waiting and brought him into her office where his little girl was sitting. He hadn't been told exactly what had happened but that there had been an issue. He was pleased to see she seemed to be okay. Just had a grumpy look on her face.
Dave sat in the chair next to his daughter and Ms. Dalton sat at her desk.
"What happened?" Dave asked
The principal looked at Jules. "You want to tell him?"
Julianna shook her head.
The principal let out a breathe. "Well, it seems she's been having a bad day and of course we all have bad days, but she got overwhelmed with an assignment that she didn't understand and decided to throw a pencil at the board almost hitting her teacher in the process."
David sighed and nodded. "I see. Julianna. Why?" he asked
"I felt like it." She said her voice laced with annoyance
David cleared his throat causing Julianna to whimper.
"What to try that again?" David asked calmly
"I just didn't understand, and she was confusing me even more by trying to explain it differently and I got annoyed…" She said
"Were you trying to hit her with the pencil?" Ms. Dalton asked
"No." Jules said
"I understand you were having a hard time understanding. Sometimes I get frustrated too. But throwing things isn't going to help you understand and its just going to end up with you in trouble." Ms. Dalton told her
Jules nodded. "I'm sorry." She said tears in her eyes.
Ms. Dalton nodded. "Okay." She told the little girl before looking at Dave. "Take her home for the day. She can come back tomorrow. Hopefully with a better attitude."
David nodded. "I'm sure she will." He said before he looked at Jules. "Do you have what you need?"
Jules nodded and pointed to the backpack next to her seat.
David nodded and stood up. "Thank you." He told Ms. Dalton. Jules got up also and grabbed her bag and the two of them walked out to the car and got in. David drove them both home. When they got home and went inside David looked at his daughter.
"You hungry?" He asked
Jules shook her head.
"Well go to your room. When you are hungry you can come eat." He told her
Jules nodded and went upstairs and curled up on her bed.
David picked up her bag and hung it up on a peg that was in the coat closet. He went into her bag and took out her lunch bag and brought it to the kitchen. He knew they would need to talk about it eventually, but she was tired so he was just going to let her rest and they could talk about it later.
A couple hours later she came downstairs. Dave was reading a book when he heard her come down. He looked up. "Did you take a nap?" He asked
Jules nodded.
"You hungry?" He asked
Jules nodded again.
"Your lunch is on the counter." He told her
Julianna went and got her lunch and sat at the table and ate it slowly. When she was done she cleaned up the mess and went and sat in the living room with him.
David sat down her book and looked at her. "You know we are going to have to talk."
Jules nodded. "I'm sorry. I will tell my teacher I'm sorry tomorrow."
Dave nodded. "I know you are. And I'm glad. But that doesn't change what you did"
Jules nodded.
"You know what you did was wrong. Why did you do it?" David asked
"I don't know. I was just really upset. I didn't understand." Jules told him
"Okay. But is this the first time you didn't understand something in school?" David asked
Jules shook her head.
"I noticed this morning you seemed really tired. Did you sleep okay last night?" Dave asked
Jules shook her head and let a tear fall.
"Hey. Its okay. Sometimes it happens." He said wrapping her in a hug
Jules hugged him back
"Was there a reason why though?" Dave asked
Jules pulled apart and shrugged looking down.
"You can tell me anything Jules. I'm a good listener." Dave said
"I had a bad dream…" She said
"We all have bad dreams sometimes. What was it about?" He asked
"It was about my birth dad coming and taking me away." She said
Dave nodded. "That would be scary. You know he's still in prison right? He's not getting out any time soon. You are safe here." he assured her
Jules shrugged.
"Is there some reason you don't feel safe suddenly?" He asked
She shrugged again still looking down.
Dave took a breathe and lifted her chin gently. "You can tell me anything." He reiterated
"I was playing at the park the other day with the sitter, and someone came up to me and told me that I would be with my real father soon…" She said
Dave took a breathe and nodded. "Did the sitter see him? Did you tell the sitter?"
"No. The man told me not to tell anyone or that it would make my real dad angry…" She said
David nodded. "Well, you don't ever need to be afraid to tell me anything. I will always protect you." He told her.
Jules nodded. "I don't want to go with him."
"He's in prison. You aren't going anywhere with him." Dave told her.
"What if he gets out?" Jules asked
"He's not getting out. He is serving several life sentences. He isn't getting out." Dave said
"What if he escapes?" Jules asked
"Did the man tell you that he said he would escape?" Dave asked
Jules nodded.
"Okay. I'm going to make a call. Make sure the prison is aware of this information. He will be watched even more carefully." David said
Dave took out his phone and went to the kitchen where he called the people he needed to while keeping an eye on her. He also called the sitter and asked her if she had seen any adults talking to her at the park. The sitter told him she hadn't and apologized. When he was done with those called he called the team and let them know what was going in.
Hotch upon hearing about this looked at his team. He wanted to send a couple Agents to talk to Donovan Hernandez, but he wasn't sure who. Lorelai saw him looking at the team and could almost tell what he was thinking.
"I will go. With someone else." Hotch Jr said.
Hotch took a breathe and was going to say no but was cut off before he could
"I'll go with her." Morgan said.
Hotch nodded. "You sure you will be able to handle it?" he asked his youngest agent
Lorelai nodded. "Yes sir."
They were finishing up with the case where they were. He called the director who was already aware of the situation as Dave had called him and he okayed a couple agents to go to Colorado where the man was in prison.
Hotch looked at the two agents. "Go. I hope it goes without saying but remember Agent Hotchner he is lead."
"Yes sir. I will behave." She said with a smile.
Aaron smiled. "You better."
The two of them went out to the Jet that was waiting for them and started the flight to Colorado.
"How long do you think it will be till he fully trusts me?" Lorelai asked Derek
Derek looked at her and could see the look on her face. "I wish I had any answer for you. But following orders and not overstepping at the prison will do a lot to help with that."
Lorelai nodded.
"You know he loves you right?" Derek asked
"Yes. I know that. And I am glad. But I wish he could trust me. Its been close to a year since I fucked up." Lorelai said
"I get that. But you have to realize. It wasn't just one fuck up. It was years of several fuck ups its going to take time." Derek said
"I know. Trust me I know. Look if I could go back in time and do things differently I would. For the most part. Some things no but a lot of the things yes. But I cant. I just want to move on from it and it's a little hard when he's still questioning everything I do or want to do." Lorelai said
"Do you want me to say something?" Derek asked
"No. Its something I have to deal with myself." Lorelai told him. "But thank you for the offer." She added
"I heard your birthday was quite the party." He said with a smirk
"Yes it was. It was everything I always hoped for my 21st birthday. And more." Lorelai told him with a smile
"Good." Derek said. "You deserve it. You and Rebecca." He said
"Haven't talked to her since. How as she the next day?" Lorelai asked
"She was fine. Not hungover if that's what your asking." Derek said
"I was. Slightly." She admitted
Derek chuckled. "A right of passage."
"I'm good with never again." She said
Derek smiled and nodded. "I know you had a fear of the addition gene. I don't think you have to worry about that." He said
"Yeah. I did the DNA testing thing. I know I don't have it." She said
"Oh, you did? I didn't know that." He said
"Yeah. I told my dad and Spencer. That's it." She said
Derek nodded. "Did you do the DNA ancestry thing too?" he asked
"Yes. Connected with my cousin who did it when she turned 18 but I already knew about her. That's it." Lorelai said
Derek nodded. "You have met that part of your family?" he asked
"Yes. I talk with my uncle and cousins fairly often. Went to meet them all once. But we are all so busy. And live a distance so haven't seen them in person since." Lorelai said
"You get along well with them?" Derek asked
"Yes. Really well. I've learnt a lot about my paternal lineage too. Law enforcement is in my DNA. 10 generations of law enforcement. My biological father broke the tradition." Lorelai told him
"Well, you picked it right back up and are damn good at it." He assured her.
"Thank you." She said with a smile. "You are a good agent too."
"Thanks." He said. "And obviously I didn't know them. But I'm sure your grandfather would have been incredibly proud of you. The same way your dad is." Derek said
Lorelai nodded. "I hope so. If there is a heaven and he's up there watching over me I hope he is."
"Not sure you believe in heaven?" He asked
"I don't know. I don't know what I believe in, in that area. I know you do believe and I completely respect that." Lorelai said
"My beliefs have been tested through the years too." Derek assured her. "And I understand your reasons for doubting. And I respect what ever you choose to believe." Derek told her
"Thanks." She said
"Now lets figure out how we are going to go about talking to this guy." Derek said
The two of them discussed their tactics till they landed.
When they got to Colorado they rented a car and drove to the supermax prison where Donovan Hernandez was being kept. They went through the security check leaving their guns there before being led though to a room. Shortly after, Mr. Hernandez was brought into the room as well. He was shacked and when he sat down was cuffed to the table.
He smirked. "This is all because you're scared of me." He looked directly at Lorelai as he spoke.
"I took you down. In a hospital room. While I was hooked up to an IV. And without backup. You really think I'm scared of you? Cuffed or otherwise?" She asked
"Well than why am I cuffed?" He asked
"Protocol. Now shut up and listen." Morgan said
"Oooh. Mr. Big shot over here thinks I will listen to him." He laughed. "Not a chance." He said calling Derek a racially discriminatory term as he pulled hard at the cuffs as he stood up.
Lorelai's blood started to boil.
"Sit down and shut up!" She said loudly
Hernandez laughed. He had got under her skin.
"Its okay Agent Hotchner. He just knows he isn't getting out anytime soon, so he is trying to piss me off. Pay it no matter." Morgan told her
Lorelai took a breathe. "I guess knowing he wont get to see his daughter grow up must really bring out the evil in him." She said looking at Derek.
"I cant imagine." Derek said.
"And cant see how his DNA in her isn't going to affect her. Because she is the sweetest little girl in the world." Lorelai said.
Hernandez punched the table. "I will get out of here. And I will get her back." He screamed "I have a plan." He let slip
"A plan huh?" Morgan said focusing his attention back on Hernandez
The man was angry. They had gotten him to reveal things he didn't want to.
"Oh, don't worry. We already figured you had a plan. Sending a friend to try and scare that little girl didn't work. She told her dad all about it." Lorelai said
"I'm her dad!" He screamed
"No. You're her sperm donor. The man who has been taking care of her since the day he got custody of her. That's the man she calls dad." Morgan said
"Yeah well I will have her soon and she will never see him again." Hernandez said
"Oh. Yeah. We have already arranged it. You are being thrown in solitary confinement once you leave here. And your bunk is being searched as we speak." Hotch Jr. said a smirk spread across her face.
The man stood up all the anger in his body pulling the table up with him. The two security officers who were in the room with them and Morgan took him down and he was removed from the room. Lorelai had backed away to get out of the way but let them do their job.
Hernandez was removed from the room and taking to his new cell.
Derek looked over at Lorelai. "You okay?" He asked
She nodded. "Are you?"
Derek nodded. "I've been called much worse."
"I'm sorry." She said
"Its not your fault. Don't apologize." He said
"I'm sorry you have to deal with shit like that. My fault or not." She said
"I appreciate that. But don't worry about it. Lets go." He said
The two of them left and went back through security getting their guns and back out to the vehicle.
"You handled yourself very well." Derek said
"Thanks. I don't know that I did." She said
"You used your voice sure. But nothing you did wouldn't be done by any member of this team. Your dad included." Derek said
Lorelai nodded and she called the very man on speaker.
"Hotch." He said answering the phone.
"So, we got what we needed. He let slip his plans to escape. He is in solitary for the foreseeable future." She told him
"Good." Hotch said
"And you would have been very impressed with her. She handled herself well." Derek said
"I have no doubts of that." Hotch said
"Really than why do you doubt every move I make?" She said in a rather rude tone before she realized the though she was thinking came out. "Sorry. Didn't mean to say that…"
"We will talk about it later Agent Hotchner." Aaron told his Agent sternly
"Yes sir." She said
The call hung up and Derek looked over at her.
She had leaned her head back against the headrest and closed her eyes
"Didn't mean to say that huh?" He said
"You know when what your thinking just comes out?" Lorelai said
"Yup. Been there. Done that." Derek said
Lorelai nodded
"You know this is just evidence of the fact that when you have something on your mind you need to talk to the person its about. You should have already told him how you felt." Derek said
"I know. You're right." She said looking out the window.
"But the good thing about Hotch is he forgives pretty easily" Derek said
She nodded. "But doesn't mean he isn't disappointed."
"Just talk it out with him. Not that you have much of a choice at this point." Derek pointed our
She nodded again. They got back to the airport and back on the jet heading back to DC.
When they landed they headed to the squad room. Lorelai sighed looking up at the light on in Hotch's office.
"Think he's waiting for me?" She asked Derek
"Only one way to find out." He said. "Go." He ordered gently
Lorelai nodded and went knocking on his door.
"Enter." Hotch said
Lorelai went in.
"You're back. Flight was good?" He asked
"Yes sir." She said
"You can drop the sir. You're not in trouble." He told her
"I'm not?" She asked
"No. Have a seat." He told her
Lorelai sat.
"I owe you an apology." Aaron told her
"Oh?" Lorelai asked
Aaron nodded. "You're a good Agent. Yes you've made a lot of decisions that ended with you in trouble but at no time were your motives anything but good. And it has been close to a year since the last one of those. You have proven that you can be trusted. I shouldn't be doubting that anymore."
Lorelai let out the breathe she didn't realize she was holding. "Thank you."
"Why didn't you come talk to me about this before it ended with you letting it slip the way you did?" He asked
"I didn't know how you felt, and I didn't want to deal with a lecture of you need to learn there are consequences for your actions." She said
Aaron nodded. "I get that. But you need to come talk to me and not let things fester. And pop the way it did."
"That's what Derek said too. I'm sorry. Wont happen again. And I'm sorry it came out rudely." She told him
"Its forgiven." He said, "Now lets head home."
"I'm going to see Jules. I want to talk to her myself. Of course, if there is no issues from her dad." She said
"Well, you'll have to ask him that. I will see you at home later." He said
They both left and went their own way.
