It had been a few days since the three of them got home. Life was getting back to normal. But it was finally time for Spencer and Lorelai to go for the 20-week scan. They were hoping to find out the gender of the baby that day. And also wanting to make sure that everything was okay with the baby too.
They were in the waiting room. Lorelai was flipping through a people magazine. Spencer was looking over her shoulder. Lorelai was reading something about a celebrity couple who were caught in a fight in public.
"You know those magazines aren't usually very accurate." He said
Lorelai looked up at him with a raised eyebrow "No. You don't say?" she said sarcastically a smirk escaping her lips.
Spencer chuckled. "Than why do you read them?"
"Its amusing." Lorelai said with a chuckle
Spencer shook his head. "Okay. Fair enough."
The doctor came and called them into the room.
Lorelai put the magazine down and the two of them went in. Lorelai was moving a little slow.
"You hurting?" The doctor asked
"My tailbone. Bruised it on the trip last week when some guy couldn't take no for an answer and pushed me, and I fell. Went to the hospital there ultrasound, bloodwork, and x rays. Nothing broken, baby is fine." Lorelai said "Bloodwork showed that I was dealing with heatstroke. I took it easy for a couple days." She added
"Ouch. Well glad your okay for the most part." The doctor said
"I was going to ask you. There isn't an issue with massage therapy when I'm pregnant right?" Lorelai asked the doctor.
"Not a problem. Just make sure they know your pregnant of course." The doctor told her.
Lorelai nodded and climbed onto the table. Spencer stood next to her.
"So, this is a major scan. I am checking for certain birth defects we can see at this point. I'm not expecting anything, but we have to check." The doctor said
Lorelai smiled and nodded. "Okay. They have been pretty active. Felt them kicking or moving what have you early last week. By the end of the week. It was able to be felt by others too." Lorelai said
"Active baby. I like it." The doctor said with a smile
Lorelai lifted her shirt and the doctor put the goop on her stomach and started the ultrasound.
"We also would like to know the gender if at all possible." Spencer said
The doctor nodded. "We can check for that too for sure." She said with a smile
The doctor moved the transducer around slowly checking for any signs of anything abnormal. Also explaining everything as they were seeing it. Always assuring them that things looked very normal. The doctor smiled.
"You can see right there." She pointed out. "The baby is a thumb sucker." They could see the baby had their thumb in their mouth.
Lorelai chuckled
Spencer smiled before spouting a face about babies and thumb sucking.
The doctor nodded with a smile. "That is true yes."
Lorelai smiled up at Spencer.
After about forty-five minutes the doctor had taken all the pictures she needed, and the scan was almost done. "Now. Lets see if we can find out the gender." She said.
She moved the wand to the right location. "Well, they seem to not want to share." She said pointing out that the area was covered
Lorelai pushed at her belly a bit. "Come on baby." She said softly.
The baby moved a bit. And the doctor was able to tell them what they were having. Lorelai and Spencer were very excited.
"And your baby looks perfectly healthy. Just keep doing what your doing." The doctor said. She handed Lorelai a towel.
Lorelai cleaned up her stomach. She sat up and her and Spencer hugged, and he kissed her.
"You two doing any big gender reveal?" The doctor asked
"Yes. Doing it at the baby shower." Lorelai said
"I'm always curious how are you going to revel it?" The doctor asked
"With a piñata. There are quite a few kids in the family who will be there so fun activity for them at the same time." Lorelai said
The doctor nodded. "Love it."
She handed them an envelope with pictures from the ultrasound.
"Thank you." They both said. They went over a few other things before booking the next appointment and headed out.
On the car ride home. Spencer started the conversation. "So, you asked a question about apartment or house. We really need to sit down and figure out where we both are financially because either way we should start looking so we can get set up and settled in." He said
"Agreed." Lorelai said.
They picked up some food for lunch before heading back to her place. They ate and started to talk about their financial things. Aaron was out of town for an FBI unit lead conference. Rachel had taken Jack to the park, so they had the place to themselves.
"Are you thinking we would join our finances completely?" Lorelai asked
'No. Was more thinking we get a joint account and we both put money in for a mortgage or rent, other shared expenses and for things for the baby and we also could have an account for savings for the future. Maybe an account for university fund for the baby as well." He said "But we both have our own accounts as well." He added
"And what is the baby doesn't want to go to university or collage?" Lorelai asked
"I take it you're not going to push them to do so?" Spencer asked
"Push no. Encourage and support if that's what they want yes. I've been listening to my dad and sister argue about it for months. Till he finally caved when she snapped." Lorelai said. "I do not want that to be how we do things." Lorelai said
"Okay. I will concede that to your choice." He said
"I'm not saying we don't encourage them to think about it but what if their passion isn't something you can go to school for? I went to school because I wanted to but if I hadn't been brought into the FBI I don't know what I would have done. What if I decided to go the route of art?" Lorelai pointed out
Spencer nodded. "I get what your saying."
"But we can start an account. That they can have access to at eighteen if they decide to go to school and if not when they are twenty-one or twenty-five or something." Lorelai said
Spencer nodded and smiled. "Deal."
They discussed more things realizing they both had substantial savings and a down payment for a house would be very possible.
They heard the front door open and slammed and little feet storming into the living room. A few seconds later the door opened again and was closed more gently. "We are not done Jack." Rachel said
"Screw you!" Jack said
That got Lorelai's attention and she got up and went into the living. "Don't you even talk to anyone like that." She said sternly to Jack
Jack's attitude quickly changed. He hadn't noticed the extra car in the driveway he didn't know Lorelai and Spencer were there.
Rachel had come into the room at that point too. "I've got it Lorelai." Rachel said annoyed
Lorelai nodded and left the room.
"How many times do you have to be told not to do something before you stop doing it?" Rachel asked him
Jack shrugged.
"I want an answer." Rachel said her anger clearly rising.
Lorelai had seen this kind of thing happen before and it never ended well. She went back into the room. "Rach. Why don't you both take a second and come back to this conversation later." Lorelai said
"Lorelai I said I've got it." Rachel said
"Rachel. The last time I saw someone getting as angry as you that anger was directed at you." She said flashing back to the last time she saw their former foster mother get angry at someone and that was at Rachel, and it was the last time she was there to step in and take the anger off of one of the kids in that home.
That snapped Rachel out of her anger. She walked away and went up to her room.
Spencer went into the room and put a hand on Lorelai's shoulder, and she flinched.
He took his hand off and stepped back. "Sorry. Did I startle you?" He asked
Lorelai took a breathe and turned around and looked up at him her eyes sad.
Spencer looked at Jack. "You should go to your room too." He told the younger boy
Jack went quickly.
Spencer put his arms around her and felt her sink into him.
"Hey. Its okay. Its going to be okay." Spencer said moving her to the couch where he sat and brought her into his lap where she curled.
"What's going on?" He asked
Lorelai shook her head.
Spencer didn't push it just held her. About half an hour later Rachel came into the room. "Did I really sound like Jessica?" She asked
Lorelai took a breathe and looked up at her. How did she answer that question without hurting her sister.
"Yes. But the fact when I told you that you walked away means you are nothing like her." She said
"She's my DNA." Rachel said
"And am I anything like my birth parents?" Lorelai asked
"Well. No. I don't think so." Rachel said
"I know how hard it is to break the cycle. But the fact that this is clearly hurting you so much means you can. Maybe its something you should talk to your therapist about?" Lorelai asked
Rachel nodded. "Is Jack okay?"
"You think you can talk to him calmly?" Lorelai asked
Rachel nodded.
"Than go find out." Lorelai said
Rachel went and knocked on Jack's door.
"Yes." Jack said
Rachel went in. "I realize I was reacting badly. I shouldn't have been yelling. I'm sorry." She said
Jack nodded abit.
"But that doesn't change that you kept taking off and hiding on me." Rachel said. "And kept dumping sand on that boy. He asked you to stop. I told you to stop. Twice. You need to learn to listen when I or someone else tells you to stop. The first time." Rachel said
Jack nodded. "Okay. I'm sorry"
Rachel sat on his bed. "We're okay? I didn't scare you did I?" She asked
Jack shrugged.
"I did…" She said
Jack shrugged.
Rachel let out a sad sigh. "I'm not going to yell at you like that again. I'm not angry with you. I understand that your going to need time to trust that but know I love you." She said
Jack nodded.
Rachel left the room and went back to her room and curled on the bed.
Lorelai went up a little later and knocked
"Yea?" She said
Lorelai went in. "You fix things?"
"He is scared of me now…" Rachel said
"Did you apologize? Explain to him that you would work on not doing it again?" Lorelai asked
"Yes I apologized, and I told him I wont ever do it again. I told him I love him, and we talked about what happened at the park calmly. But I figured he needs time." Rachel said
"What did happen at the park?" Lorelai asked
"He kept dumping sand on the head of another kid at the park. The kid asked him to stop. I told him twice not to do it again on the third time I told him we were leaving. He ran and hid from me. I found him after 20 minutes which was terrifying by the way. Than he took off again. Twice more." Rachel said
"He really pushed your buttons. I understand why you got angry with him. You know its okay to be angry with him right? You just need to calm down before you start yelling. Because the yelling isn't going to make him listen." Lorelai said. "You've got to use the low voice that dad does. That makes him listen." Lorelai said
"It makes just about everyone listen. That voice is scary." Rachel said
Lorelai laughed. "True."
Rachel smiled abit.
"Did you give Jack a consequence?" Lorelai asked
"I couldn't… After that. I just told him not to do it again. I had intended on telling him I wouldn't be taking him to the park for awhile, but I couldn't…" Rachel said
"Well. Do you want me to tell him?" Lorelai asked
Rachel nodded.
Lorelai gave her a tight hug. "You are nothing like Jessica. You are a good person who loves your brother so very much. He scared you and you reacted. Just next time you bring him home where he's safe and send him to his room so you can calm down first. Okay?" Lorelai said
Rachel hugged her back. "Yes. I will do that."
When they were done talking Lorelai went to Jack's room and knocked
"Yes?" Jack said
Lorelai went in. "I'm disappointed in the way you acted at the park." She said sitting down on the end of his bed.
Jack looked down.
"Would you like it if someone dumped sand on your head?" Lorelai asked
Jack shook his head.
"And I know you understand no means no. So, when he told you to stop or when Rachel told you to stop why didn't you listen?" Lorelai asked
Jack shrugged.
"Lately you have been doing things like this a lot. Pushing kids, splashing the water in their faces. Dumping sand on someone's head. This isn't like you. What's going on?" Lorelai asked
Jack shrugged.
"Who's attention are you trying to get?" She asked. She had been a profiler long enough and knew her brother well enough to know something was going on and she thought back to the last time he kept acting out like this and it as to get their dad's attention.
Jack looked down.
"Dad's?" Lorelai asked
Jack shook his head.
"Mine?" She asked remembering how he reacted to the fact that she would be moving out
Jack nodded abit.
Lorelai took a breathe. "And you want this kind of attention? The kind that could end with your butt spanked?" She asked
Jack shook his head abit.
"And when Rachel said it was time to come home. You kept hiding from her. You know how scared she was?" Lorelai asked
Jack let tears fall.
"She didn't know where you were. You know that dad and I have to arrest people often who hurt kids. Someone could have seen you and taken you when no one was watching, and you could be really hurt." She said
"I'm sorry." He sobbed out.
Lorelai moved in closer and pulled him into a tight hug. "You are important to Rachel. To this family. You need to think before you do things that could land you in a bad situation." She said
Jack wrapped his arms around her and sobbed.
Lorelai just held him till he calmed down.
When he was calm she looked at him. "Look at me." She said
Jack looked up at her
"The way you acted at the park today was unacceptable. You wanted my attention well you've got it." She said sternly.
"You will not be going to the park for the next month. And if you want to spend time with me ask me. If you do anything like this again I will be spanking your bare bum and I clear?" She asked
Jack sighed and nodded.
She hugged him again.
Jack hugged her.
"Why don't we do something fun together this weekend? Just you and I?" She asked
Jack smiled and nodded.
"How about mini putt?" She suggested
"Yay!" Jack said
"Okay, Saturday we will go mini putting just you and me." She said
She got up and left the room and went back downstairs where Spencer had on an apron and was prepping dinner.
She smirked and took a picture of him in the apron before he noticed her there.
"Hey. What are you doing?" he asked
She put her phone away and smirked. "Oh nothing." She said going to help him.
"Mhm." He said.
There was a loud bang from upstairs and Lorelai ran upstairs quickly she saw Jack coming out of his room. "That wasn't in your room?" She asked him and he shook his head. She went and went into Rachel room to see her sitting on the floor sobbing. She saw her phone across the room.
"What? What happened?" Lorelai asked getting down to her level and wrapping her in a hug.
Rachel buried herself into her big sister and just sobbed. Lorelai sat there and just held her.
Jack peaked in the room and Lorelai looked at him. "Can you go tell Spencer I wont be back down for a bit." She said
Jack did what he was told and told Spencer that Rachel was crying.
"I'm sure Lorelai can handle it. You want to help me make dinner?" he asked
Jack nodded. And Spencer gave him something to do and the two made dinner.
About half an hour Lorelai came back downstairs and Spencer looked up at her. Jack at that point was playing video games.
"Jack told me she was crying?" Spencer said
"She was bawling her eyes out. Like heartbroken bawling…." Lorelai said
Spencer sighed.
"I swear if that girl hurt her…" Lorelai said
"You will help your sister get over it. You will not do anything to that girl." Spencer said
Lorelai sighed. "You're right."
"And maybe its unrelated. Maybe its something else." Spencer said
"Maybe. What I do know is she cried herself to sleep in my arms and I had to lay her down on the floor because I couldn't lift her…" Lorelai said
Spencer went upstairs and lifted the sleeping girl onto her bed before coming back down to Lorelai setting the table. Food was served and the three of them ate. Lorelai made a plate for Rachel for later when she woke up.
Lorelai got Jack to help her clear the table and do the dishes before she went to check on Rachel. She was laying on her bed her eyes opened.
"Hey." Lorelai said softly
"Hi." Rachel said
Lorelai went and picked up her phone. "Looks like its still okay."
Rachel shrugged. "I don't care."
"Okay. What happened?" Lorelai asked
"Apparently she had a boyfriend back home. He messaged me and told me that she was spoken for and for me to back off." Lorelai said
Lorelai made a face. "If she had a boyfriend why would Ericka be so excited to introduce you?"
"I don't know… Maybe Ericka doesn't like her boyfriend. We don't really know Ericka anymore." Rachel pointed out.
"I mean no we don't, but she was too excited. I think there is a story there. Have you asked Brooke about it?" Lorelai asked
"Why? So, I can make a fool of myself?" Rachel asked
"Maybe this boy is her ex wanting to get back with her and trying to push you away so you're not in the way?" Lorelai asked
"Brooke told me she was full on lesbian. So, she lied if she has an ex-boyfriend." Rachel said
"Or. She was confused thought she liked boys too and than realized she didn't." Lorelai said
"Than why would she still be with him?" Rachel asked
"You don't know that she is simply because this boy says they are." Lorelai said "You need to ask her. You need to give her a chance to tell you what is really going on. You owe it to your heart." Lorelai told her.
Rachel took her phone and called Brooke putting it on speaker.
Brooke answered. "Hey! How's it going pretty girl?"
Lorelai smiled
Rachel sighed. "I'm giving you a chance to explain yourself. Only because my sister thinks I should. You're on speaker she is here too by the way. I got a message on social media. From this guy. Named Harry. Says he is your boyfriend, and you are spoken for. I lurked his page there are pictures of you two together so what is going on?"
"Wow. That guy has a set of balls. He is not my boyfriend. We used to be friends. Just that friends. He was pretty pissed when I came out as a lesbian because he thought he had a shot with me which he never did. I never liked him that way. He was abit pissy for about six months than three months ago he messaged me and told me he was sorry and wanted to fix our friendship. Before we left for the girls trip he tried to push things again and I told him we were no longer friends, and he was pissed. I haven't talk to him since, but he has tried. I do not know how he found out about you, but I promise he and I have never had that kind of relationship. I told you the truth about always knowing I was a lesbian. I have never liked any guys that way. I'm so sorry he is doing this, and I promise you it I will handle it. I would not have gotten involved with you if I was involved with anyone else. I am a one-person girl. I promise." Brooke said. "And since you said she is there I'm guessing she is about ready to kick my ass, but I promise Lorelai I have on intentions of hurting your sister." Brooke added.
"I knew there had to be more to the story than this guy was saying. I admit the thought of kicking your ass if you broke her heart did crossed my mind. But for right now its safe." Lorelai said
"Fair enough." Brooke said.
"And now you two can talk alone as I am leaving the room." Lorelai said leaving the room
"Rachel. I promise you the only person on my mind right now is you." Brooke said
"Okay." Rachel said
"You believe me right?" Brooke said
"I'm trying to. Its just had been a bad day already and than I saw that message and it kind of…" Rachel said
"Made it worse. I get it. What else happened today to make it a bad day?" Brooke asked
"I got angry with my little brother. And I didn't react very well. Lorelai had to basically tell me I was acting like our former foster mother to stop me from yelling at him…" Rachel said
"Ah. Ericka has filled me in over the years about the shitty woman she was. And did she really say you were acting like her?" Brooke asked
"Not in those words exactly. And it was enough to make me realize I was, and I walked away to calm down. And she talked about it with me after she doesn't actually think I'm like her… but I still…" Rachel said
"So, you realized, and you stopped. Would your foster mother have stopped when someone told her?" Brooke asked
"No." Rachel said
"So, you had a bad moment. But your going to work hard to not do it again right?" Brooke asked
"Yes. Something to work though in… therapy." She said
"You're in therapy?" Brooke asked
"Well. I was when I was in school. I went to a private therapeutic day school. Saw a therapist a few days a week. I need to find one now that I have graduated. I was given a few names just haven't done it yet." Rachel said
"I see." Brooke said
"What is your opinion on therapy?" Rachel asked
"I saw one for a few years after my highschool was shot up by a student when I was fifteen. I worked though my issues but that was a onetime event. Look I don't want to say I know what you went through but if its anything like what Ericka went through I can understand why continued therapy would be beneficial. I certainly would not judge you if that's what your asking." Brooke said
"Well, I obviously don't know exactly what Ericka told you but likely very similar to what I went through. Lorelai and Rebecca the oldest two in the home, when I was there shielded us from a lot I think but we all got abused. Physically, mentally, verbally." Rachel said
"And some of you ended up being sex trafficked I hear?" Brooke said
"Some were. I was not. It was mostly the older girls. We were saved before I reached the age of being of interest for that I think." Rachel said
"Wasn't Lorelai some how part of saving you?" Brooke asked
"Yes. Um. She is in law enforcement, and it was her and my dad's team who came in and rescued us. After Becca called her for help. It's a really long story and not entirely mine to share." Rachel said
"I understand." Brooke said
The call was quiet for a minute.
"I want you to come visit me here." Brooke said
"I would love that, but I don't think my father would let me..." Rachel said. "The downside to not turning eighteen till the september after graduation." Rachel said
"You can ask though?" Brooke asked
"I can definitely ask" Rachel said. "When he's back. He's out of town currently."
"Of course." Brooke said. "Were okay though?"
Rachel took a breathe. "Yes. But if I find out your lying. I will not get between my sister coming for your ass." She said with a small chuckle
Brooke chuckled. "Deal."
They hung up a few minutes later. Rachel went downstairs.
She saw Spencer sitting in the living room but didn't see anyone else around.
"Hey." She said
Spencer looked up. "Hi. You okay?" he asked
"Lorelai told you?" Rachel asked
"Yes. Don't be annoyed with her though. She was just concerned." Spencer said
"I'm not. I get it." She went and sat across from him.
"You talked to her though and figured everything out?" Spencer asked
Rachel nodded. "Just a stupid guy trying to hurt her because she's not interest in him."
Spencer shook his head. Rachel leaned back in the chair she was in. "Where are Lorelai and Jack?"
"Went to the store to grab some ice cream." Spencer said. "If you hungry there is a plate for you in the microwave." He added.
Rachel shook her head. "Not really hungry."
Spencer nodded. "Anything on your mind you want to talk about?"
"Just. Its hard knowing that Brooke knows so much of what I went through in that home because she's best friend with another girl who was in the home. And we experienced a lot of the same things. And while it might affect us a little different I'm sure if we all told what happened out stories would be similar." Rachel said
"Your probably right." Spencer said "But think about it this way. You don't ever have to worry about her running because she cant deal with what you went through. She knows and she is still interested."
"True." Rachel said
Lorelai and Jack came inside. Lorelai got the ice cream in the freezer. "Shower first Jack." She told him and Jack ran off to shower.
Rachel came into the kitchen.
"Hey you eat? Foods in the microwave." Lorelai said
"Spencer mentioned. But I'm not really hungry." Rachel said
"No ice cream for you than." Lorelai said with a smirk
Rachel chuckled. "That's okay."
"Everything okay with Brooke?" Lorelai asked
"I think so yes. But I told her if she's lying to me I wont stand in the way of you kicking his ass." Rachel said
Spencer came in from behind. "But I will." He said
Lorelai chuckled. "We just wont tell him." She said to her sister
Rachel chuckled.
Spencer put his arms around Lorelai from behind and put his hands on her tummy. "You'll tell me right?"
"Nope. As long as the baby is inside me. They baby is on my side." Lorelai said with a chuckle
"So, you found out gender today?" Rachel said
"Yes. And no, you don't get to know." Lorelai said
"Oh, come on. Pleeeese." Rachel begged
"Nope." Lorelai said
Jack came back down after his shower and Lorelai served up ice cream for him, herself, and Spencer. "I was teasing by the way do you want some?" She asked Rachel
"I'm really not hungry." Rachel said
"You need to be hungry for ice cream?" Lorelai asked
Rachel chuckled. "Fair but my stomach feels a little off."
Lorelai's hand went to her forehead.
"Not sick off. Emotional off. I still don't know if I fully trust Brooke…" Rachel said swatting Lorelai's hand off her head
"I normally say trust your gut…" Lorelai said.
"She did say she wants me to visit. If she was trying to hide a relationship would she invite me?" Rachel asked
"Probably not." Lorelai said
"Do you think your dad will let you?" Spencer asked
"Probably not but I will ask." Rachel said
"I don't know he might. If you can afford the trip yourself." Lorelai said
"Probably wont be able to…" Rachel said
"Sorry sis. But she will be here in just a couple months." Lorelai said
Rachel nodded. "You're right." She went off and after Jack ate his ice cream he went off too.
Spencer looked at Lorelai. "Obviously it will be dependent on your dad's approval, but we have yet to get Rachel a graduation gift. We could get her the tickets to go to see her girl?"
Lorelai smiled "You're very nice."
"Don't want to?" Spencer asked
"I wouldn't say that. But I don't know. I worry about her okay?" Lorelai said
Spencer nodded. "I get that."
"And I obviously don't know what my dad will say but Rachel might not be wrong. He might say no. She is under eighteen." Lorelai said
"Yeah. Downside of a birthday in September." Spencer said
Lorelai yawned.
"Time for bed?" He asked
"I have to make sure Jack gets to bed first." Lorelai said
Spencer nodded.
Lorelai got up and went to his room and knocked.
"Yeah?" Jack said
Lorelai went in. "You ready for bed?"
"No?" Jack said
"My fault. I asked. Let me rephrase that. Its time for bed." Lorelai said
Jack giggled
Lorelai smiled
Jack climbed into bed.
Lorelai gave him a hug and said goodnight before turning out the light. She made sure his night light was working before she left the room closing the door.
She went to Rachel's room and knocked.
"Yes?" Rachel said
Lorelai went in. "Jack is in bed. I'm heading that way too. Don't stay up to late."
Rachel smiled and nodded. "Okay. Good night."
"Good night." Lorelai said leaving the room as well. She went into her own room. Where Spencer was already getting ready for bed as well. Lorelai got changed into her PJ's and crawled into bed.
Spencer got in with her and they both read on their phones for a bit before heading to sleep themselves.
