Trouble With The Mafia
"…What do you think the Tenth brought her here for?" a deep voice started off in a hushed tone.
"Well, I'm sure he's not going to do something bad to her…maybe…" another one trailed off in a calmer tone.
"That's not what I meant, you baseball idiot!" the other guy hissed in reply.
"Well well, idiot-dera is worrying too much again…." a lazy voice spoke, not even seeming to worry about the situation at all.
"Shut up you stupid cow!" he shouted in irritation and the boy was startled, but still gave a childish sound, with his tongue sticking out. Even though he's grown out of his annoying infant days, the boy couldn't help but retort the silver haired teen.
"No, you shut up, Gokudera-kun. You'll wake Kyoko-chan up for crying out loud!" the familiar voice half-screamed as she hissed back sternly.
"...Do you want me to help you with that Haru-san?" A meek teen said as she held up her trident shyly.
"Hmm...that'd be nice but it'd be hard to throw the idiot out of the room if you made a Bianchi-san illusion again..." Haru muttered as she placed a hand on her chin, thinking about the pros and cons of the female illusionist's idea. Gokudera scowled and protested as the pony-tailed teen only glared at him in return.
"Mnnn… …" The orange head mumbled as she stirred.
Everyone in the room seemed to flinch in cue with her voice, save a bored boy who was busy searching for candies.
"She's waking up….!" Gokudera said as he took a step back away from the harmless orange haired teen.
"Calm down Gokudera. It's not like she's going to suddenly attack us or something." The other man chuckled cheerily as he folded both hand over his head being the only calm person in the room.
"I-I know that!" Gokudera retorted back.
"K-Kyoko-chan! Are you alright?" a female voice this time, worry clearly written in her voice as she grabbed Kyoko's hand with a frown.
Kyoko's caramels fluttered open as her sight finally cleared up, she slowly sat up and noticed that she was lying down on a fancy canopy bed. The first person she saw and recognized was Haru with her usual concerned expression, kneeling beside the furniture she is resting on. The brunette held herself up but winched when she felt a burning pain on her neck from the thug's grasp previously. She looked down to her side with hazy honey browns.
"Haru...chan?" She muttered at the kneeling pony-tailed teen.
"Y-yeah it's me! Are you hurt anywhere? Do you feel sick?" Haru asked without pause and the orange haired teen managed to let out a soft giggle before replying with a smile.
"No, I'm fine actually. Well...at least better than before..."
Kyoko grinned sheepishly, remembering the countless times she'd made her friend worry over her. Haru sighed in relief before standing up and that was when her caramel eyes widened as she noticed the new faces around her and the unfamiliar room.
"W-Who—Where?" she blurted out in panic.
"Oh, don't worry they're a good bunch of guys…at least in a way they are...hehe." Haru tried to laugh it off but the way she sound doesn't convince her at all.
"We're part of the mafia stupid woman! What part of us is 'a good bunch of guys'?" Gokudera quoted the five words mockingly with his hands.
"You're a what, now?" Kyoko's smile grew crooked as she gripped the blankets on hand, not wanting to believe what she just heard.
"Uhh…it's a long story really." Haru scratched the back of her head, not knowing how to explain after looking at Kyoko's puzzled expression.
"Well then, how about we start from the introductions first?" Haru said with her usual smile. Kyoko noted her sudden change of topic but let it slide for then as she nodded in return.
"The guy with the old man's hair and bad temper is Gokudera Hayato." She pointed to the guy with the silver hair in disgust. The half-italian glared at Haru before turning his sight at the orange head.
"Dynamite expert, storm guardian as well as the tenth's loyal, right hand man."
The bomber seemed to brighten up at the mention of 'the tenth', or whoever he is, as his emeralds were filled with pride. Haru snorted before walking up to a Japanese man who was smiling brightly at the orange head, ignoring the look filled with daggers thrown at her form a certain storm guardian, of course.
"Moving on, that refreshing and friendly guy who is also a baseball lover is Yamamoto Takeshi."
"Katana wielding baseball fan, rain guardian and left-hand man at your service. Nice to meet you!" Yamamoto grinned with a kind smile.
"And—" she was cut off by a loud, childlike voice.
"Hmp, I am the great Lambo-san! And if you have any candies…its MINE!" His loud laugh echoed through the whole room, causing all the occupants of the room to winch.
"Lastly, the quiet girl there with the eye patch is Chrome Dokuro." Haru introduced her happily with a bright smile on her face.
"Half mist-guardian and illusionist...I'll be in your care from now on."
Her voice was barely inaudible as she bowed politely. Awkward silence filled the room as Kyoko stared at the strangers curiously. If she'd heard correctly...there's a bad tempered bomber, baseball loving swordman, shy illusionist, a boy in a cow printed suit and her best friend chatting normally with the crowd. There was only one thing on her mind though, that she had to get out of here with her friend before her sanity flew out of the window the next second. The silver haired one did say that they are in the mafia and she just couldn't make sense out of it.
"Kyoko-chan?" Haru said as she waved a hand before her caramels, the other teen seemed to snapped form her thoughts.
"Oh right, I'm Kyoko Sasagawa, nice to meet all of you." Kyoko smiled before getting off the luxurious bed.
"Well then, thank you very much for your help but I have to leave for my job now with my friend, if you don't mind…."
The orange head trailed off naturally before walking up to the door, grabbing her friend's arm and leaving the other occupants in the room to blink and looked at each other at her sudden declaration. Haru stopped the pull from the determined ginger, her chocolate brown irises widened disbelievingly at her friend's sudden action.
"W-Wait a minute, Kyoko-chan. How could you still think of your part-time job even after all that?" Haru said.
"But the owner of the convenience store will scold me for being late if I stayed an longer."
Kyoko said plainly. Haru almost face palmed and she turned to look at the other occupants in the room. Gokudera finally sighed and put up a hand on his pocket, emeralds gazing sharply at the orange head, causing her to freeze in her spot.
"Sorry to say but you can't leave yet, Miss Kyoko. The Tenth wishes to speak with you and as his guardians..." The storm guardian trailed off, grabbing a handful of grenades from his pockets. "...we will ensure that you stay in this room no matter what."
Kyoko's eyes widened and she squeaked when a hand appeared on her back to lead her on a velvet sofa.
"Haha, relax, you're his important guest after all, so we won't hurt you." Yamamoto said with a light chuckle but the orange head didn't fail to notice the katana strapped around him which was within arm;s reach if ever needed to be used. Kyoko didn't dare to ask whether it was merely a toy or….
The boy with cow printed suit sighed and scratched the back of his head. "I'm not going to threaten you like these guys but it might be better for you to stay…for your own good."
"Bossu will definitely scold us if there is even a scratch on you...so please don't struggle too much." The female illusionist said as she held the trident closer to her. The guardians turned to the pony-tailed teen and she winched as all eyes were then placed on her.
"Umm..." Haru looked at Kyoko's expression, only to find a very scared and alert orange irises whose determination to dart off the room with her only seemed to grew with the subtle threat she'd received.
"Sorry Kyoko-chan but I'm on their side this time! Don't worry though, I can assure you that everyone's here is on our side." Haru said aloud to convince the others of her decision. "Tsuna-san wont't be happy if we fail with such a simple task."
"Tsuna-san?" Kyoko raised a brow at the name.
"Kyoko-chan, you don't remember? Tsuna-san saved you from those thugs and paid off all your debts!" Haru grinned happily as she answered the orange haired teen with glee and a glint of admiration in her brown hues.
Kyoko paused her thoughts and tried to remember what happened before she blacked out and the image of a brunette with cold amber hues surfaced in her mind.
"Oh…"
Yes. That man saved her when she was about to be killed by the debt collector, and then….
Light shade of red crept up her cheek as the teen remembered the protective embrace of the stranger and the smooth voice whispering just beside her ear.
"Kyoko?" Haru blinked as she waved her hand in front of her friend's face, breaking her out of the trance. "Are you alright—?"
Haru's words were halted as the door flew open, revealing a familiar face of a teen with gravity defying chestnut hair. He wore a button up white shirt with it's sleeves rolled up halfway, a matching black pants and a loosened tie. Kyoko also noted that his eyes were a light brown colour unlike the glowing pool of orange that she remembered. The guardians and Haru immediately brighten up at his presence.
"T-Tenth!" Gokudera said as he proceeded to bow ninety degrees, not more or less as a show of the outmost respect he has for his boss.
"Hey guys, you're all here." The brunette started off before turning to the orange haired teen who was staring at him in curiously.
"And I see you're finally awake?" Tsuna smiled softly and chocolate browns met with caramels.
Kyoko tried to push aside the thought of her first encounter with the brunette but to no avail, a tint of red crept up her cheeks as she nodded quietly.. It was the first time he'd gotten more than just a short exchange of words from a guy. But still, Kyoko wondered if he'd mistaken her for someone else when he…hugged her. She shook her head, stopping her thoughts from delving into the matter any further and focusing on her current predicament.
"Do you want us to leave the room, Tenth?" Gokudera asked him with respect written all over his face, which was odd for Kyoko after seeing how he snaps at almost everyone just a second ago.
"No, it's fine, all of you can stay. It actually makes things easier that way."
He advanced towards the seat across the confused teen and crossed his legs. The rain and storm guardian stepped back and leaned against the sides of the door, guarding it for anyone who might pass which only made Kyoko tensed instead.
There goes my only chance in escaping….
Kyoko turned her gaze back at the stranger before her and noticed that he had a soft smile etched on his lips. Though something about that smile seemed off to Kyoko. It was as if the man before her holds many secrets that he is hiding from her…
"I'm Sawada Tsunayoshi, the tenth boss of the Vongola and also one of the most powerful family in Italy—"
"W-Wait a second!" Kyoko raised a hand as she finally interrupted, the orange head couldn't take any more of this 'mafia' business. Everyone in this room has had their turn in making her even more confused than the time she'd first woken up in this room.
"…Yes?" He raised a brow, wondering why she had suddenly stopped him.
"If you're really in the mafia, how could you live so openly in a noticeable mansion? Where are we?"
Kyoko asked, various questions swirling in her mind but she decided that it was the safest question to shoot first. She wreck her brain to find something, anything to prove that she wasn't in some insane situation when she should be peacefully working by now, just like always.
"Well…we are all here now, aren't we?" Tsuna answered plainly with an amused smile, a hand supported him as he placed it on the arm of the furniture.
"T-That's not what I meant!" Kyoko flustered at his 'as-a-matter-of-fact' answer and the young Mafioso just blinked.
"What's wrong with it?" He tilted his head to the side.
"If what you're saying is true….aren't you guys basically 'wanted' people?" Kyoko answered hesitantly as she avoided calling them 'criminals', which would actually make things worse for her if they never denied it.
"Hmm…If you're worried about that, then I'll let you in a bit of a secret...Kyoko-san." Tsuna grinned as he noticed her puzzled expression.
"What secret?" She eyed him suspiciously.
"Actually, you're the first 'common' person to know that we are in the mafia. Everyone else knows us as 'Vongola', a…business association and to answer your second question, don't worry, we are still in Namimori, just in a more...secluded part of it." He chuckled as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
"Are you serious…?" The orange head muttered as the edge of her lips twitched in disbelief. Though the mafia boss himself and the mansion was practically enough to prove him right and what does he mean when he said that she is the first common person to know about it?!
"Don't worry we won't harm you or your friend. In fact, Haru is a part of my family." Tsuna spoke, catching her off guard as she wondered if he'd just read her mind. Kyoko glanced at Haru by the side who is now shifting in her place with a guilty look while Kyoko eyed her, demanding an explanation from her after all of this is done.
"Now that I've answered your question, there's something I'd like to discuss about your debt..." He trailed off and Kyoko flinched at the reminder of those cursed debt. Ten years of her life spent running away from the debt collectors and now she owes a top-notch mafia boss.
...Why am I always this unlucky again?
"A-About that...I really appreciate your help, really, I do. But…." Kyoko trailed off as she played with the hem of her skirt, not knowing what to say. "I-I promise to pay you back in the future so I'll be going now….."
Kyoko was about to leave her seat when she was stopped by a hand holding onto the edge of the chair she was in, preventing her from escaping as she was left to plopped back to her seat. She gasped as the brunette seated in front of her was now looming over her, looking down on her. Kyoko's honey browns locked with his glowing orange irises gazing down at her intensely.
Wait…wasn't it brown just now? And when did he get here in such a short time?
"It seems you've got the wrong idea, Kyoko-chan." His voice dropped drastically from the calm smooth voice he'd used before. The smile had been wiped off his face and replaced with a grim look.
"H-Huh?" Kyoko said dumbly as she broke from her shock.
"I believe I'd reminded you that we are in the mafia." He trailed off, orange hues focusing on her, as if ensuring that his prey doesn't escape him. "We're not such a nice bunch to just casually help people in need for free."
Kyoko pursed her lips, she was being threatened but she would not just take his threat like a weak person and cower under his form. His orange irises were taken aback by the glare that the orange haired teen had returned to him. All these years surviving by her own has taught her that being intimidated by others won't do much good for you. Kyoko mustered the strength in her voice.
"I don't break promises and I mean it when I said before that I will pay you back."
Tsuna blinked, surprised by her sudden reply. Kyoko kept the hold in her glare. Truthfully, she had nothing to lose anyway and it is true that she always keep her promises. Even if it is to a Mafioso she's just met. Besides, he did save her so perhaps she had a chance in escaping out of here alive.
"Oh…? And when is that?" A sweet smile graced his lips as he leaned in closer, making the orange head sink in her seat even more.
Well of course a simple glare wouldn't send a freaking Mafioso away, but why does he need to be so close?!
Kyoko could take verbal threats but against someone who's persistently breaking into her personal space with a creepily sweet smile…there's just so much she could take.
"…Someday?" Kyoko grinned sheepishly and averted his gaze, she could feel her cheeks heating up from his intense gaze. He was contemplating about her answer, not noticing her blatant discomfort from their proximity.
T-Too close!…and now that I think of it, it will take a whole lifetime just to pay off my stupid debt!
"Actually, there;s another way to pay it off instead of money." He finally retracted with a devilish grin on his face and everyone in the room flinched, except for Kyoko, as they knew that it could only lead to trouble since he was never the type to be interested in money to begin with.
"Uhm...you might want to watch out on what you're going to say there, Kyoko-chan" Yamamoto warned as his usual carefree smile was replaced by worry and...pity?
"Miss Kyoko….good luck." Gokudera gave a thumbs up with a poker face.
"Kyoko-chan, b-be careful…somehow." Haru was unsure on what to say other than that. At one point she doesn't want to go against Tsuna and yet on the other, she was worried about her friend.
"….W-What's the deal?" Kyoko spoke cautiously, she didn't have a good feeling about this either.
"It's simple, really." His lips tugged into a soft smile as he took a step back, pausing. "Kyoko Sasagawa…"
The orange haired teen winched as she waited for him to finish his sentence, she grabbed the hem of her skirt tightly and shut her eyes, wondering what kind of harsh fate will befall her next. She heard the sound of a shift of the cloth followed by a gasp by everyone in the room.
Kyoko's caramel irises fluttered open with curiosity but the sight that fell before her was something she'd never expected. The brunet was crouching on one knee and meeting her gaze, the once intimidating orange hues were now back to its original light browns. His expression had soften and for the first time, she could sense that it was not a mere smiling façade which he has been showing her all this time. He was being sincere.
But the thought was pushed aside all too suddenly when his voice escaped his lips.
"Will you be my lover?"
Tsuna smiled innocently.
