A/N: Thank you all for the reviews for the previous chapter. I really appreciate all of them. I'm sorry it took me awhile to update this story. I guess I just haven't been very motivated to update any stories or post any new stories. Anyway, if anyone is still here, reading this story, here is chapter ten…
Disclaimer: I only own Damien Benson, in this chapter.
A couple of days had gone by, and the third graders were at their desks, talking amongst each other, while waiting for their teacher. School would begin in less than ten minutes.
"Why isn't Mr. Benson here, yet," Maeve asked.
JJ shrugged her shoulders. "Don't know and definitely don't care."
"Maybe on his way over here, he somehow drove into another universe. And is trapped there," Emily suggested, sounding very hopeful.
"I'm pretty sure that isn't even possible," said Spencer.
"Hey, I can dream, can't I," Emily glared at Spencer.
The students continued to talk about where their teacher could possibly be. Suddenly, they all froze in silence, when they heard the door handle click. Expecting their teacher to walk through that door, they were surprised to see someone else. Someone, they hadn't seen in a while.
"Aaron," they all happily exclaimed as they rushed over to greet him.
"Welcome back, Aaron! We missed you," Penelope embraced him in a hug, causing him to wince in pain. "Oh, I'm sorry! Did I hurt you?"
Aaron just laughed and said, "It's okay, Penelope. You didn't hurt me."
Everyone thought nothing of what just happened, as they continued to talk to Aaron. Well, everyone that is, except Elle. After seeing what his face had looked like, a few days ago, she couldn't help but stand back and wonder just exactly what has been going on behind closed doors and why Aaron kept lying about it.
"Alright, let's get back to our seats," a familiar voice called out. Much to the students annoyance, it was Damien. They were all too busy talking to Aaron, to even hear the door handle click.
As they were walking to their desks, Elle whispered to Aaron, "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine," Aaron whispered back with a smile.
Elle knew he was lying, but decided not to confront him about it. This wasn't the time or place.
"Aaron, it's good to see you back," Damien earnestly said. "I heard you had the flu. Are you feeling better?"
Aaron smiled and said, "Thank you, I'm glad to be back here. I'm feeling very much better, now."
"Glad to hear that," said Damien. "Okay, let's get started with the first lesson of the day. Who can tell me when the Revolutionary war began?" Several hands were raised and Damien scanned the room with his eyes, before choosing. "Beth, do you know it?"
Beth lowered her arm and said, "The Revolutionary war began in 1775."
"Correct. Now, can you tell me the month and date it began," Damien asked Beth.
Beth sat there for a moment, thinking very hard. Finally she shook her head from side to side in a disappointing manner. "No, sorry."
"How about a guess? You could be right."
"May nineteenth," Beth said in more of a questioning way.
"The date's right, but the month is wrong. Anyone else wanna try and guess," Damien asked as a few hands went up. "Matt, you think you know the correct answer?"
"Yes, I know it," Matt said confidently as he lowered his arm. "April nineteenth of 1775 is when the Revolutionary war began."
"That is correct," said Damien. "Okay, next question… When did the Revolutionary war end?" A couple of hands went up and Damien scanned the room for a brief moment, before choosing someone. "Spencer, what's the answer?"
"September third, 1783," Spencer said with a lot of confidence in his voice.
"Correct," said Damien. "Okay, these next few questions, you don't have to raise your hands, but you can't speak, unless I call your name, okay," the students nodded their heads in agreement, as their teacher continued. "Good, moving on… "What was the outcome of the American Revolutionary war, Ashley?"
"American Independence," said Ashley.
"Good job, Ashley," Damien praised his student. "Okay, next question… Which of the following bodies of water did George Washington cross, twice in December of 1776? Was it A. The Delaware River? B. The Mississippi River? C. The Atlantic Ocean? Or D. The Pacific Ocean, Kevin?"
Kevin thought for a moment, before answering. "I think it was the Delaware River," he said, not sounding to sure.
"Kevin, is that your final answer?"
"Yes."
Damien stayed silent for a moment, just looking at Kevin, before finally saying, "George Washington did indeed cross the Delaware River, twice in December of 1776," he could tell Kevin was relieved that he answered correctly. "Good job, Kevin. Okay, one more question, Jordan this one's for you... On the twenty third of December, 1783, George Washington walked into a statehouse and surrendered his militia to the congress. Where was this statehouse located," he asked.
"Rhode Island," said Jordan.
"No, that's not it," said Damien. "You wanna take another guess? You might have the right answer, this time."
Jordan appeared to be thinking. "Oh, it was Annapolis, Maryland," she said, more sure that she was correct.
"I knew you'd get it right," said Damien. "Good job, Jordan. Alright everyone, take out your history books and read pages 75 to 90. You'll be reading about, no surprise here… The American Revolutionary War."
The students did as they were told and began reading, silently.
Later, that day, when school was over and the students were heading out the door, Elle stayed behind, for a bit. She told herself, she wouldn't tell anyone else, besides her father, what she had noticed about Aaron, the other day, but she knew she had. So, she approached her teacher's desk and waited until he noticed her. Even though school for the day was over, she didn't want to speak to him, unless she had permission. She was taking no chances with getting in trouble over it.
Damien had been grading papers, and after a moment or two, but what seemed like an eternity to Elle, finally looked up and was surprised to see Elle, standing in front of his desk. "Oh, hey, Elle. Didn't see you, there. Is there something I can help you with," he asked.
Elle was quiet for a moment. Contemplating on whether she should say something or just forget about the whole thing and walk away. Finally, she did what she believed was right. "I don't think Aaron had flu, when he was absent from school," she said.
"Are you saying, he skipped school," Damien asked. "Because he can get into a lot of trouble over that."
"Yes, but I don't think he wanted to skip school."
"You think he skipped school, but he didn't want to skip school," Damien looked confused. "Okay, you lost me. You wanna explain to me, what you mean, by that?"
"I live across the street from him and the other day, I went over to his house to give him an invitation to Clyde's birthday party," Elle began. "When he answered the door, his face was bruised. I asked him what happened and he told me, he tripped over a toy that belonged to his little brother, Sean. But, I don't think that's what happened. I think someone in his family is hurting him and I don't think they wanted him to come back to school, unless the bruises on his face were gone."
Damien was quiet for a moment, as he appeared to be taking in all this information the Elle had just given him. "Thank you for sharing that with me, Elle. You did the right thing and I'll see what I can do to about it, okay," he noticed Elle looked worried.
"Okay," said Elle.
"Enjoy the rest of your day and I'll see you tomorrow."
"Bye," Elle waved.
Damien waved back to his student. After Elle was gone, he got out his cell phone and dialed a number.
End of chapter ten. Well, that was shocking… Damien was actually nice to his students. Eh, I figured… Can't have him being a jerk, the entire story. He'll occasionally have his moments of niceness, but most of the story, he's still a jerk. Anyway, care to tell me your thoughts on this chapter? They will be greatly accepted and appreciated. Chapter eleven will be posted, soon!
