"What should we do?" Sergei complains. "We were going to upload the interview today."
"Can't we still?"
Sergei had known Mikhail for as long as he could remember. He had been neighbours with the old man his entire life, had married his only granddaughter and somehow wormed his way into the family overnight.
Sergei knew what that kind of intonation behind the old man's tone meant. It was the same tone he had used before introducing him to his now wife. It was the same tone he used when he was sneaking a second brownie even after being told by his doctor to cut out sugar. It was the same, god-awful smug tone he used everyday when he reminded Sergei that he was his main source of income.
The old man was plotting .
"Wouldn't this just add fuel to the fire?"
"Would it?" Mikhail laughs, leaning back into his seat. "Yura is a sweet boy and he loves Vitya. How would he feel if he found out all of Russia was against him?"
"I don't see how this can help."
Mikhail sighs as if it pains him that Sergei could not understand him. "Look, most 'fans' of Vitya are patriots. Maxim had only one World title, Ilia had two silvers. Viktor already has two World titles, an Olympic silver medal and three European titles. We have never had a single skater with the dominance that he brings to figure skating. It makes us feel good, he represents the very best of our country."
"It means that most people will defend him till the day they die. Vitya is worth that sort of adoration, and of course people would band together against a foreign enemy who stole our boy's records, right?"
"But, Yura is nothing like that." Sergei argues.
"Exactly." Mikhail chuckles. "Vitya is our blood, but Yura is something else. The way he acts, the way he is so kind, I have never seen a champion with this type of mindset. Vitya is a good boy, but when it comes to competitions, he is as ruthless as anyone. He does not waste his time on people like us, he is on a different level. Katsuki has the same fame, and yet, he reaches out towards us. He treats us like we are equals, regardless of our nationality. That is the kind of athlete he is; he exemplifies what sports is."
Mikhail sips his tea. "Release the video. We shall see if he can turn the tide."

[I started this channel in hopes to document my grandfather-in-law's love for figure skating. After his retirement, Dedushka Misha has been struggling to re-alight his passion for life, hence the reason behind the birth of this channel.
Somehow, it has grown to places we could have never expected.

[VIDEO TRANSCRIPT]
A YouTube video of Mikhail and Sergei premiering live on YouTube chronicling their time as press reporters at the Junior World Championships. The cinematography is incredible, taking a docu-style in its camera work and the script.
7:00 AM blares at the top of the screen, as the clip overlooks Sergei in his hotel room. His face is mostly cut off from the scene. He begins to shoot Mikhail getting ready for the day. Mikhail is wearing an old suit, but he looks dapper as always.

The first few minutes of the video is a montage of himself and Mikhail walking through the hotel, having breakfast, getting their press badges, and touring the venue. The shots interloop competition footage, with an emphasis on Russian skaters.
"Dedushka and I are most interested in the men's discipline." Sergei's voice can be heard from behind the camera, as it points towards Mikhail. He is waving a little Russian flag.
"I want to see Katsuki live."
"There are other skaters, Dedushka."
"I need to see who is worthy of breaking our Vitya's record."

"This is the first time we're here as reporters!" Sergei switches the camera so that it's facing back towards the rink where a skater was receiving their score. "We have the lanyards and everything, so it's very exciting. The seats they gave us are good too."
"I'm surprised they did not send any other reporters." Mikhail comments. "With how strong we are in the field, they could have sent some others."
"That's true." Sergei is seen nodding to the camera, pursuing his lips. "To be honest, we had to pay to come here, but the federation gave us press lanyards when they found out. There's no other Russian press here, so we have an important job to do."

"There are so many skaters here." The camera pans to the masses of people in the audience. The rink is completely filled.
"I wonder why." Mikhail questions. "It looks like a senior competition."
"It does." Sergei's voice can be heard from behind the camera. "They have to be Katsuki fans. Look, dedushka." The camera moves to focus on the multiple Japanese flags that the audience are holding.
Text appears at the bottom of the screen, saying please lower the volume . Suddenly, erupting screeches resound through the video, seemingly coming from all around. The camera pans towards the audience at the opposite side of the rink, where Japanese flags are waving frantically in the air.
The video shows that a new warm up group has entered the rink. The camera focuses on a figure swathed in pink, who was doing a simple warm up lap across the ice.
The camera turns to Mikhail, "Well, now we know.."

Sergei aims the camera towards the various skaters coming through the mixed zones. The captions say that it was slightly awkward for them, since the two of them have never gone to such a high profile competition before.

[There seems to be some discord over on Russian fs twitter that has surfaced recently.
We'd like to make it known that Katsuki-senshu has always talked about being a fan of Viktor since his novice days. He has always been vocal about his support and admiration of Viktor. To see such overwhelming negativity directed towards someone who sincerely loves Viktor as much as we do is both disheartening and heartbreaking..
Viktor has always set an example by being cordial in all of his interactions with other skaters, even when he himself has experienced the same negativity in his earlier years by Volkov fans. Because we know about the stress and pain that those comments had caused our Viktor, we would like to make a comment as the biggest Viktor fanclub in Japan.
We do not condone these sorts of comments being made towards Katsuki-senshu, and we would appreciate it if members of EMPEROR would report any similar comments made about Katsuki that we may see on our timeline.
We are here to spread our love for Viktor, and we hope that situations like this do not continue to happen.

The Face Behind the Top 1% of Japanese Students: Katsuki Yuuri - The Future of Japan

Every so often, there are people who define a generation.
Ten years ago, director Miyawaki Hana became the first non-English speaking woman of colour to win an Academy Award for her directorial debut, Kintsugi. Five years ago, Nakano Kiyoshi-senshu became the first Japanese player to win MVP in the MLB. Their years of dominance have always been stretched against other talented people, Hasegawa Hiroshi won the Palme d'Or in the same year as Miyawaki-san; Kamiya Ittetsu-senshu had the most homeruns in a debut season for a rookie player in the MLB. Their years were known as peer groups of excellence.
So what can we say of this year?
It has almost been overrun, the narrative of our education system's failure. Never before have we seen such a high level of college entrance examination failures in the history of the exam's conceptions. Who else do we have to blame, other than our own selves, for setting our children up to these monstrous expectations?
Criticisms against our education system have always been at large, the devastating after effects felt no more than with the declining rate of university admissions in the wake of the school entrance examination disaster.
It is sure that for years to come, this generation will be defined by their greatest failure. And yet, it is our children that come to prove that hope will always shine through.
Figure skating - a sport that combines complete athleticism and masterful artistry, a sport that is breathtaking to the naked eye, and even more jaw-dropping to the expert. Defying all bouts of physics, figure skating is a sport that hides its imperious labour behind the delicacy of beauty. It is a sport that is not mainstream in our nation.
And yet, it is here, where a star has been born.
Our readers may be asking, why are we talking about a sport that is relegated to page five of the sports column? You are correct, it is not even first-page news. And yet, we at the Mainichi , find it our duty to announce to the world the magnificence of this one, teenage Japanese skater.
In the last few months, this single sport has seen an exponential rise in popularity, particularly within the younger generation, and it is all because of this one skater - Katsuki Yuuri-senshu.
You may now wonder, what does this athlete have to do with the education failures of our country? Well, allow me to set the scene.
The Grand Prix and Senior Nationals occurred in December, The NCTUA on January 17th, the TOEIC in February, and Junior Worlds in March. For all intents and purposes, those four consecutive months were the pinnacle of Katsuki-senshu's eighteen year old life.
And how did he do with all of these life changing events?
In just one year, Katsuki-senshu won all major Junior competitions on the international stage. Starting with the Grand Prix in December, where he broke two world records, through to the senior Nationals where he placed second amongst skaters twice his age, until the Junior World Championships where he broke three, consecutive world records.
It is a feat of enormous magnitude. His Junior World Championship titles has meant that the following year, Japan now is able to send three Junior skaters, increasing our chances at the competition. Katsuki-senshu has earned that with his own bare hands.
Next year will be his most monumental year yet - his debut in the senior international stage, against the greats of Russia, Viktor Nikiforov-senshu, Switzerland's Christophe Giacometi-senshu and China's Cao Bin-senshu. The year after, the all-encompassing Winter Olympic Games at Saratov, Russia.
In between these competitions, he has taken the exams that have plagued our nation's high school students for months. It would be enough to make a grown man cry, and yet Katsuki-senshu had taken it with the grace of a feared warrior, prepared for battle; and he won, every single time .
He earned 892 out of 990 in the TOEIC, when the average pass rate is 500. He ranks within the top 1% of the nation, earning top grades in all of his studies across a range of subjects, including the sciences and humanities, all whilst representing his country.
It is not without sacrifice.
Time - Katsuki-senshu had to live his life constrained by time. Whilst his friends and peers were out celebrating, he would dedicate every free moment of his time to his future. Hasetsu, the town he grew up in and loves like a family, is indebted to his care - it is no surprise that the town's only school, Hasetsu Higashi High, hosts around 150 students at most, with only 30 students in the graduating year.
It is also one of the top schools in the nation with the highest number of students who have passed the examination - something that has been attributed by Katsuki-senshu's peers as only possible because of "Yuuri-kun's 'Cram' School" (Oguri Shun-san, 18) where the entire graduating class had descended upon Katsuki-senshu's home to revise between them. It is this family sensibility, this community, that has raised Katsuki-senshu to who he is now.
The gloom of our current children's situation cannot be defined by their failures. Our children's resilience and determination will burn even during the darkest time. Katsuki-senshu beams like a beacon of hope during these times, a blinding, ever-shining light at the forefront of excellence, and proves, even during the darkest of times, t he future of Japan is bright.
