AUTHOR'S NOTE: Greetings, readers! Here is chapter 102 of the continuing adventures of Tristan, Hillary, and Pikachu as they continue their journey through Johto. Butch, Cassidy, and Professor Namba are still up to no good in this chapter, and they won't give up so easily. I hope you enjoy. Please feel free to read and review responsibly at your leisure.
TEASER: After being frozen and drench, Entei has been greatly weakened, and Butch and Cassidy are still after it! And when Professor Namba joins the battle, it's a triple threat that our heroes must face!
Chapter 102: PROTECTING A VOLCANO, PART 2
(Music Cue: Movie Title 1998 (The Beginning of the Counterattack!))
Last time, our heroes met up with Mewtwo again, and together, they encountered the legendary Pokémon Entei. But Entei, believing that our heroes were responsible for cooling down the area's local hot springs, immediately attacked them, and they engaged it in battle to try and reason with it.
But suddenly, Butch and Cassidy of Team Rocket sought to steal Entei's power for themselves and weakened it greatly.
Hillary stayed behind with Quilava to help keep an eye on Entei while Tristan, Pikachu, and Mewtwo flew to the Pokémon Center to get Nurse Joy as fast as they could.
Will our heroes be able to help Entei? And what is Butch and Cassidy's sinister plan to capture this Legendary Beast?
Tristan, Pikachu, and Mewtwo landed just outside the Pokémon Center.
I'll let you get Nurse Joy, Mewtwo suggested.
"Don't you want to meet her, Mewtwo?" asked Tristan.
Mewtwo sighed. I'd rather not get involved with any more humans. You know how some are. But I know that you and Hillary are the exception. And there are other good people like you in this world that will stop at nothing to help out someone in need. I'll hang back for now, and step in when the time is right.
Tristan understood what Mewtwo was saying. "Okay, then. I'll get Nurse Joy. Come on, Pikachu." And he and Pikachu rushed into the Pokémon Center while Mewtwo quickly hid from sight.
Nurse Joy saw Tristan and Pikachu dash in. "What's wrong?"
"We have an emergency, Nurse Joy," said Tristan. "It's Entei, and it's in trouble."
"Where is it now?" asked Nurse Joy.
"I can show you where it is," replied Tristan.
"Then let's go in my truck," suggested Nurse Joy.
And together, Nurse Joy, Tristan and Pikachu got inside the truck while Mewtwo flew high above, out of their sight.

"Don't worry, Entei," said Hillary as she, Togepi and Quilava kept a watchful eye on it. "Tristan and Pikachu will be back soon."
Entei had been weakened from its battles against Tristan and Hillary as well as Butch and Cassidy.
Hillary gently felt Entei's soft fur. "I don't think it's very warm," she said to herself. Quickly, she gathered a bundle of sticks together and set them down. "Quilava, could you make a fire for Entei?"
Quilava gently unleashed a gentle Flamethrower on the bundle of sticks, getting them kindling, and sure enough, a cheery campfire had been made.
"Perfect, Quilava, thank you," smiled Hillary.
Quilava nodded.
Togepi even felt the warmth and trilled happily.
Presently, Hillary, Quilava, and Togepi heard the sound of screeching tires. Then they saw the truck come into view.
The truck screeched to a halt, and Tristan, Pikachu, and Nurse Joy quickly emerged from it.
Nurse Joy took out some supplies and prepared to examine Entei. She then felt Entei's fur, which was still very cold and wet from the battles with Butch and Cassidy's Water Pokémon. "It seems like Entei's been through some tough battles against some Water Pokémon."
"Tentacruel and Cloyster," replied Hillary.
"Butch and Cassidy of Team Rocket did this," added Tristan.
"So they weakened it and made Entei unwell?" asked Nurse Joy.
Tristan and Hillary nodded.
"That's terrible!" exclaimed Nurse Joy.
"Apparently, they'd been cooling down the area's hot springs so they could lure it out," explained Tristan. "And Entei's been using its power to help keep the hot springs warm so that the Pokémon visiting them can relax."
"Poor Entei," said Nurse Joy. "No wonder it's exhausted." And she spent the next hour treating Entei as best she could.

An hour later, Tristan and Hillary told Nurse Joy about the experiences they had about learning about Ecruteak City's legends and two of the three Legendary Beasts.
"So you met Raikou and Suicune and both of them had eggs you hatched? That's amazing!" said Nurse Joy.
Tristan and Hillary nodded.
"Morty told us that Raikou represents the lightning that struck the tower, Entei represents the fire that burned the tower, and Suicune represents the water that put out the fire," explained Tristan.
"Ho-Oh came and resurrected the three Legendary Pokémon after the tower burned," added Hillary.
"Grandma and Grandpa first took us to meet Morty when we returned to Johto," put in Tristan. "We were going on a road trip to the Whirl Islands at the time, and Ecruteak City was one of the stops along the way."
"It sounds like you guys had a fun and enlightening experience," smiled Nurse Joy.
"It doesn't seem fair that Team Rocket was targeting Entei just for its power," said Hillary. "They never learn about friendship and trust like we do."
Tristan turned to Hillary. "Do you think Entei was secretly putting us to the test to see if we could earn its trust?"
"I don't know, Tristan," replied Hillary. "But if it is, then we have to do our best to protect Entei from Team Rocket, no matter what."
Suddenly, the air got chilly.
The fire that Quilava made had gone out.
"Is anybody starting to feel cold all of a sudden?" shivered Hillary.
"I am," replied Tristan. "But how is that possible?"
"Maybe it's Butch and Cassidy," answered Nurse Joy.

Suddenly, Entei opened its eyes and struggled to its feet.
"Entei, you shouldn't try to get up yet," cautioned Hillary.
But Entei only roared at her and ran off.
"Wait, Entei! Come back!" cried Hillary.
"This is bad," said Tristan. "We've gotta go after it."
And together, Tristan, Hillary, Nurse Joy, and the Pokémon darted off to find Entei posthaste.
Meanwhile, at the hot springs, Cloyster was freezing up the water using its Ice Beam.
Butch and Cassidy had a manmade snow machine that covered the surrounding area with snow and made the air very cold.
"This should help us capture Entei for sure," smiled Cassidy.
"And once we do, we'll give it to Professor Kimba," added Butch.
"IT'S NAMBA!" screamed Professor Namba's voice, which came from Butch's radio.
Presently, Entei arrived, and gave a loud roar at Butch and Cassidy.
"Well, look who's here," smirked Cassidy. "I guess you couldn't be kept down for long, could you?"
"And we're happy to see you," added Butch. "Turn up the snow, Cassidy."
"Right," agreed Cassidy as she pushed a button on her remote control.
This time, the snow headed straight for Entei, who tried to force it back with its Flamethrower, but it was so weak that it could only match the strength of the snow.
"This one certainly doesn't know when to quit," smiled Cassidy.
"Wanna have a snow day, big fella?" asked Butch.
"I'll let the snow answer that," agreed Cassidy. And she turned up the power on her machine, which proceeded to blast even more snow at Entei.
Entei's Flamethrower was pushed back, and it took the brunt of the blast, causing the snow to start piling on top of it.
The pile of snow grew higher and higher until only its face could be seen.
"Well, we froze the Legendary Beast," smirked Cassidy.
"And stopped a volcano," added Butch.
Just then, Tristan, Hillary, Nurse Joy, and the Pokémon arrived on the scene.
"Stop right there!" ordered Nurse Joy.
"You're ruining the hot springs!" added Hillary.
"No," retorted Butch. "We're just getting started with them."
"And, look who's become our latest frozen asset," put in Cassidy as she pointed to the big snow pile covering Entei.
"All right, let it go!" demanded Tristan.
"Entei's really weak!" added Nurse Joy.
"We don't care," smirked Cassidy.
"Cloyster, Ice Beam now!" commanded Butch as he threw his Poké Ball.

Cloyster emerged from the white light that shot out of it and unleashed an ice-cold beam of energy at Entei, freezing it solid.
"Entei!" cried Tristan.
"It's encased in ice!" gasped Nurse Joy.
"Not for long!" replied Hillary. "Go, Cyndaquil!" And she threw her Poké Ball.
Cyndaquil emerged from the white light that shot out of it, ignited the flame on its back, and unleashed a powerful stream of fire at the frozen Entei.
"Quilava, use your Flamethrower to help Cyndaquil get Entei unfrozen!" instructed Tristan.
Quilava also unleashed a powerful stream of fire and combined it with Cyndaquil's Flamethrower, defrosting Entei instantly.
Entei opened its eyes and saw Tristan, Hillary, and Nurse Joy, believing them to be enemies at first. But when it saw Cyndaquil and Quilava had freed it from the ice, it couldn't be mad at them anymore and turned to Butch and Cassidy.
"All right, you big lug, you asked for it!" snarled Butch. "Cloyster, Water Gun!"
Cloyster shot a blast of water from its mouth directly at Entei.
Entei tried to unleash a Flamethrower, but it was only able to cough up a puff of smoke. As a result, it got hit by Cloyster's attack.
"What happened?" asked Tristan, who was full of concern.
"Being covered with snow and then being frozen must've weakened Entei even more!" replied Hillary.
"What do we do?" asked Nurse Joy. "Butch and Cassidy's machine seems to be unstoppable."
"Then we have to destroy that machine first," advised Tristan.
"Oh, yeah?" retorted Cassidy as he threw her Poké Ball. "Tentacruel, Poison Sting!"
Tentacruel emerged from the white light that shot out of it and unleashed a barrage of poisonous needles at Entei.
"Entei, look out!" cried Tristan.
Suddenly, Mewtwo flew in. That's enough! it demanded as it unleashed a Psychic attack at Tentacruel and its Poison Sting, stopping the attack and to toss Tentacruel in the air.
"It's Mewtwo!" said Tristan and Hillary excitedly.
I'll deal with them, advised Mewtwo. You two worry about Entei.
Tristan and Hillary nodded in agreement.
"There's no time to waste!" added Nurse Joy. "We have to help get Entei out of the snow pile."
"I don't think so!" retorted Cassidy. "Tentacruel, stop that thing with Water Gun!"
Tentacruel unleashed a blast of water at Mewtwo, who protected itself using a defensive barrier.
"We won't let you near that beast!" snarled Butch. "Cloyster, stop them with Ice Beam!"
Cloyster unleashed an ice-cold beam of energy at Tristan and Hillary's feet, trapping them in ice.
"I can't move!" grunted Tristan. "We're stuck!"
"And we're freezing, too!" added Hillary.
"Now to prevent any future interference," smirked Cassidy as she turned up the power on her snow machine, which unleashed a blast of manmade snow and wind at Tristan, Hillary, Nurse Joy, and the Pokémon, nearly burying them.
Everyone managed to poke their heads out of the snow pile.
"It's s-so c-c-cold!" shivered Hillary. "Cyndaquil, get us out of this!"
Cyndaquil tried, but it was so cold that it couldn't ignite the flame on its back.
"Cynadquil's too frozen to use its Flamethrower attacks," said Tristan nervously.
"And Entei's still in pretty rough shape, too," added Nurse Joy.
"Uh, don't look now, but I think Butch and Cassidy's reinforcements are here," gasped Hillary as she pointed up.
Sure enough, the helicopter that Butch and Cassidy were in before had just landed, and launched a gigantic net to capture Entei, who had been ensnared, snow and all.
"Entei!" cried Tristan and Hillary together.
Professor Namba's voice blared on the helicopter's loudspeaker. "You've been a very naughty Pokémon. Now prepare to be shocked!"
"That's Professor Namba!" exclaimed Tristan.
"So he's the one who's after Entei? But why?" wondered Hillary.
A burst of electricity crackled through the net, and Entei got electrocuted.
"Stop it!" demanded Nurse Joy. "We won't let you hurt Entei more than you already have!"
"I'd say you're in no position to be making demands," smirked Cassidy.
"And you're in no position to do anything about it," added Butch.
"Entei is ours, so deal with it!" finished Professor Namba as the helicopter's door opened.
A rope had been lowered, as Butch and Cassidy prepared to make their getaway.
"We have to find a way to stop them," grunted Tristan.
It was then that Quilava emerged from the snow pile and chased after Butch and Cassidy.
"Quilava, wait!" called Tristan. "Where are you going?"
"You fools!" shouted Professor Namba. "Stop that Quilava!"
"Water Gun now!" ordered Butch and Cassidy.
Tentacruel and Cloyster unleashed a blast of water at Quilava, scoring direct hits on it.
"Quilava, stop!" shouted Tristan. "You're gonna get hurt!"
But Quilava kept taking the double Water Gun head-on without letting up.
"Time to put out the flame!" said Butch. "Cloyster, finish it off with Ice Beam!"
Cloyster unleashed an ice-cold beam of energy at Quilava, scoring another direct hit on it and encasing it in ice.
"Quilava!" cried Tristan.
"That should take care of it," snickered Butch.
Sure enough, Quilava was frozen solid, and it couldn't move.
"This can't be," gasped Tristan quietly as he watched the frozen Quilava. Then he saw Quilava's head and back starting to glow. Its flames hadn't been completely doused yet.
"Tristan, look!" cried Hillary as she pointed to Quilava.
"Quilava must be trying to resist the ice!" said Nurse Joy.
This must be the ultimate test of Quilava's stamina, added Mewtwo. Right now, Quilava is the only one that stands a chance of not only saving itself, but all of you, too.
"Why can't you get us out of here?" asked Tristan.
This is something that you and your Pokémon must do, answered Mewtwo. I'd help, but I want to make sure that you and your Pokémon can truly work as a team to help Entei. I was only there to protect Entei from Cloyster's Poison Sting. Now it is your turn to help. And right now, Tristan, you and Quilava are Entei's only hope.
Tristan could see that Mewtwo was right; he couldn't rely on his legendary Pokémon friends to bail him out forever, even though they'd help him in a heartbeat. Then he shouted words of encouragement to his Quilava. "Listen, Quilava, you're the only one who can help us, and we can't afford to give Entei the cold shoulder. It's time to show Team Rocket that we don't let ice and snow get the best of us. You have the heart of a Fire Pokémon. So now let's turn up the heat get fired up!"
When Quilava heard the words 'fired up,' it turned up the flames on its head and back to their maximum and broke free of the ice. Then, to everyone's surprise, it began to glow in a bright white light.
"Whoa!" gasped Hillary.
"Was it something I said?" wondered Tristan.
"Quilava's starting to evolve!" exclaimed Nurse Joy.
(Music Cue: Entei Enters the Hall (as heard in the Japanese version of "Lord of the Unknown Tower: Entei"))
And sure enough, as Quilava evolved, its body grew more bulky and agile. When the light stopped, it had triangular eyes and ears. It gave a loud cry as flames were emitted from the back of its head.
"Wow!" said Tristan excitedly. "My Quilava evolved into a Typhlosion!" And he scanned the newly evolved Pokémon with his Pokédex, nicknamed Dexter.
"Typhlosion, the Volcano Pokémon. Typhlosion is the evolved form of Quilava. When heat from its body causes the air around it to shimmer, this is a sure sign that Typhlosion is ready to battle."
Typhlosion increased the power of its flames and showed off its ferocity.
"That's awesome!" said Hillary. "Now it can help get us out of this and save Entei!"
"Yeah!" agreed Tristan. "All right, Typhlosion, let's take care of Team Rocket!"
Butch and Cassidy cringed.
"Now we're in for it," shuddered Cassidy.
"Oh, yeah, we'll see who see who's in for it!" retorted Butch. "We'll attack together! Tentacruel and Cloyster, finish it off with Water Gun!"
Tentacruel and Cloyster teamed up and unleashed powerful blasts of water at Typhlosion.
"Typhlosion, Flamethrower!" shouted Tristan.
Typhlosion unleashed a powerful blast of fire its mouth at Tentacruel and Cloyster's attacks. But this one was much more powerful than when it was a Quilava.
Tentacruel and Cloyster tried to push back, but their water was no match for Typhlosion's fire, as they got charred by Flamethrower. They had both been defeated at the same instant.
"Aah! Tentacruel!" cried Cassidy.
"Cloyster!" added Butch.
They had no choice but to recall their Pokémon, which they did.
"Typhlosion, can you get us out of the snow?" asked Tristan.

Typhlosion turned to the pile of snow and unleashed another Flamethrower at it, warming Tristan, Hillary, and Nurse Joy up as well as freeing them and their Pokémon from the snow.
"Okay, now let's free Entei!" said Tristan as he took out his Friend Ball and threw it.
Meganium emerged from the white light that shot out of it.
"Meganium, Razor Leaf!" ordered Tristan.
Meganium shot a flurry of razor-sharp leaves at the net, freeing Entei from it.
But Entei was falling to the ground at frightening speed.
"It's falling!" cried Hillary.
"Go, Typhlosion, help Entei out!" commanded Tristan.
Typhlosion unleashed a Flamethrower on Entei, giving it a very soft and safe landing.
"Way to go!" commended Tristan.
Typhlosion and Meganium looked at each other and were happy with each other's comradery.
Butch and Cassidy cringed in fear as Professor Namba dropped out from the helicopter.
"Fine! I'll handle this one myself!" shouted Professor Namba. "Go, Electabuzz!" And he threw his Poké Ball.
Electabuzz emerged from the white light that shot out of it.
"Go, Typhlosion, Flamethrower!" ordered Tristan.
Typlhosion shot a powerful blast of fire from its mouth at Electabuzz, scoring a direct hit on it and knocking it into Professor Namba. Then it unleashed a five-pointed flame at not only Professor Namba, Electabuzz, Butch, and Cassidy, but at the helicopter, too.
"Whoa, what was that?" asked Tristan.
"Typhlosion just used Fire Blast!" gasped Nurse Joy.
Check out that power! remarked Mewtwo.
Sure enough, Typhlosion's Fire Blast attack was super powerful and caused the helicopter to explode, sending Butch, Cassidy, Professor Namba, and their Pokémon careening into the sky.
DING!
"That was great, Typhlosion," commended Tristan.
Pikachu and Togepi agreed. They were impressed with Typhlosion's newfound strength.
"Now, we need to get Entei back to full strength," said Hillary, who saw Entei still soaking wet and freezing cold. "But at this rate, it'll take us years before Entei fully recovers."
Don't give up so easily, advised Mewtwo. Remember, if Tristan can find a way to tap into Typhlosion's inner strength, then I'm sure the both of you can come up with a way to get Entei back to full power.
"Mewtwo's right," agreed Nurse Joy. "I'm sure you'll think of something."
Tristan thought and thought, until finally, he said, "Hillary, let's gather a whole bundle of loose firewood."
"What for?" wondered Hillary.
"You'll see," replied Tristan. "Follow me." And he and Hillary went off into the forest to gather sticks as they motioned the Pokémon to follow them.
Nurse Joy and Mewtwo stayed behind to keep an eye on Entei.
In a few minutes, Tristan, Hillary, Nurse Joy, and the Pokémon gathered up as much firewood as they could, and made a giant ring of it all around Entei.
"All right, we're all set," said Tristan. "If this works, we'll have Entei back to full strength in no time. Are you ready, Typhlosion?"
Typhlosion nodded.
"Let's do it, Cyndaquil," added Hillary.
Cyndaquil nodded, too, and readied itself alongside Typhlosion.
"Flamethrower!" commanded Tristan and Hillary together.

Cyndaquil and Typhlosion unleashed powerful blasts of fire at the firewood.
Instantly, the firewood ignited, and created a huge fire that surrounding Entei.
"I sure hope this works," said Nurse Joy to herself.
Sure enough, the huge fire was getting bigger and bigger, until it fully engulfed Entei.
"Can Entei withstand being in a fire?" asked Hillary nervously.
"We're about to find out," replied Tristan.
As the fire grew taller and taller, Entei soon found itself growing stronger and stronger.
Seconds later, a powerful blast of fire came out of the fire and into the open sky. There, standing proudly in the fire and stronger than ever, was Entei.
"Entei!" said Tristan excitedly.
"Now that was awesome!" agreed Hillary.
Entei gave a mighty roar and proceeded to the frozen hot springs. There it used a powerful Flamethrower on the ice, warming them up instantly, and melting the ice inside. And with each spring, steam came out just like it did before.
The sand became warm again, too, just like before.
"Yes!" cried Tristan. "Entei's back!"
"And the hot springs are hot again!" added Hillary.
Thanks to you two, replied Mewtwo. And you did it all.
"You helped us out a little bit, too, you know," smiled Tristan.
Just a little, replied Mewtwo.
"Tristan's right," agreed Hillary. "Give yourself a little credit."
Mewtwo could see that Tristan and Hillary did have a few good points about doing most of the work.
But Tristan and Hillary also knew that Mewtwo helped out in its own way.
"It was a team effort," concluded Nurse Jory as she got back into the truck and started it up.
"Hey, Nurse Joy!" called Tristan. "We couldn't have done it without your help, too!"
"Aw, don't mention it. It's all part of my job," replied Nurse Joy as she gave a thumbs-up. "Now I must get back. I have more patients to treat. But please, feel free to come back anytime." And she stepped on the gas and sped back to the Pokémon Center.
Then, it was Entei's turn to leave, and it started walking away.
"Entei, hold on!" called Tristan.
Entei turned to Tristan and Hillary.
"We just wanted to tell you how we feel about Pokémon," explained Tristan. "And we just wanted you to know that we love them like friends and family. Isn't that right, guys?"
Pikachu, Meganium, and Typhlosion gave happy replies as he gently stroked them and they embraced him.
"And we'll continue to be friends with our Pokémon as long as we live," added Hillary. "Forever and ever."
Cyndaquil and Togepi agreed.
Entei gave a nod and acknowledged their words. Then it started jumping up the cliff, flew over the edge to the other side, and disappeared.
"That Entei really was something, wasn't it?" said Tristan.
"It sure was," agreed Hillary. "Now that the hot springs are warm again, what do you say we relax in them?"

"I'm in," smiled Tristan. "How about you, Mewtwo?"
I wish I could, but I don't think I'd better get in them... Mewtwo began, but it tripped on a rock and fell in one of the hot springs.
"Mewtwo, are you okay?" asked Hillary worriedly.
Mewtwo popped its head out of the warm water and actually smiled. This is nice, it said.
Presently, Tristan saw that Mewtwo was holding something. "What have you got there, Mewtwo?"
I'm not sure, but maybe you could see what it is, answered Mewtwo as it handed the object to him.
Little did Tristan know that the object was really an egg: a brown egg that Mewtwo had found by accident.
As Tristan took it, it started to glow, and a shimmering tone was heard.
"Look at that!" gasped Hillary. "I think that's a Pokémon egg! And it's starting to hatch!"
"Already?" Tristan could hardly believe it as the egg continued glowing, and as it did, it got bigger and bigger. He gently set it down on the ground.
When the egg hatched, it looked just like the Entei that they had helped before, only this one was a little more friendly. This one was almost as big.
"Wow! Entei hatched from the egg!" said Tristan as the newly hatched Entei nuzzled its mane against him.
Now that's incredible, agreed Mewtwo. You two must've earned Entei's respect to have earned this egg.
"Tristan, do you know what this means?" asked Hillary.
"What?" wondered Tristan.
"It means that we've befriended all three Legendary Beasts!"
"Wow! Really?"
And not only that, it seems to me that you've made friends with every Legendary Pokémon in the Johto region, added Mewtwo. I think you've completed your task, as I knew you would.
"That's awesome!" replied Tristan and Hillary together.
Pikachu and Togepi were happy with the news.
That evening, when everyone had their fill of relaxing in the hot springs, the newly hatched Entei lowered itself to the ground.
"What's it doing?" wondered Hillary.
I think this Entei wants to give you a ride, explained Mewtwo.
"All right!" said Tristan excitedly. "I can hardly wait!" And he climbed on.
"Aren't you coming, Mewtwo?" asked Hillary.
I think I'll stay here in the hot springs for a while longer, replied Mewtwo. I want to meet more of the Pokémon that come here to relax. I will be rooting for you when you battle in the Johto League. And as always, thank you.
"You're welcome, Mewtwo," said Tristan. "We're always willing to help out."
Hillary then climbed on and put Togepi inside her backpack. "We hope you'll come and see us soon."
I will, agreed Mewtwo. And thank you for your help today. You helped me feel a lot better.
"Take care, Mewtwo!" called Tristan and Hillary as Entei lifted itself up to its full height.
Then Entei started running as Tristan and Hillary held on tight. It jumped off the rocky cliffs and flew over to the other side, giving Tristan, Hillary, Pikachu a very fun ride.
"I wonder where it'll take us," said Tristan.
"Where else? To another whole new adventure!" replied Hillary.
And they ran on and on through the woods to their next destination.
And so, our heroes save the legendary Entei and gained its trust, and now, they've hatched another legendary Pokémon friend. Now our heroes will continue to the Johto League Silver Conference and more exciting adventures!
