Nearly two months have passed since an Angel has appeared and in the archives of NERV, a file for something called "Project Germanicus" is discovered that causes the staff lower than Commander Ikari and Doctor Fuyutsuki to grow suspicious until an Angel mysteriously appears, bringing the investigation to a halt and endangering the pilots. In the wake of second impact, desperate nations across the globe turned against their neighbors and waged war, the likes of which humanity hadn't seen in half a century. Years later, a veteran of one of these conflicts is summoned by NERV to assist them in waging a new type of war, and finds himself increasingly entangled in the lives of the people he finds in Tokyo-3.

Asuka and Misato grapple with both Shinji's death and his unexplained replacement. Rei struggles to adapt to the existence of someone else like her. (Rewritten Rebuild) - Shinji Ikari, a boy who was born thinking he could do no good for the world, but fate showed that this was wrong, he would apprehend in the worst possible way.

The Hedgehog's Dilemma dictates that despite the intention of a reciprocal relationship, it may not occur for reasons that two individuals cannot avoid. Despite good will, human intimacy cannot occur without substantial mutual harm, and what results is cautious behavior and weak relationships. (Warning: VERY slow fic.
