Chapter 3: The Call

"They're sending over copies of the security footage from the building," Kat said as she walked back into the squad room. Worried as she watched Olivia and Fin nod to her, their faces uneasy. She wanted to say something, anything that might be helpful but there were no words. Before they got to the precinct, they had called every bar Amanda had previously been frequent to, her mother, her therapist, and Carisi who didn't take the questioning well. He was insistent on coming down to help, but Olivia convinced him to stay home in case she called him. Alternatively, knowing how close he was to her girls he could check on them and would call him with any update. As soon as Fin pulled into the parkade, he knew something was wrong. Amanda's car was still there. Kat was the next to show up, and tried to keep a level head, helping Fin make phone calls to secure the area. They found Rollins keys and purse on the ground. The only solace they had was they hadn't seen any blood. Forensics was sweeping the area and would call the Captain if they found anything but it looked like whoever grabbed her made a clean snatch.

"Here we go," Kat said as she typed into her computer, clicking into the footage. Turning to see the screen it was projected onto.

The three of them watched as Amanda walked through the parking lot. She zipped up her coat and as she grabbed her keys her kidnapper appeared behind him. Fin shook his head, the man had come up behind her so quickly she barely had time to react. He watched as the man in the dark hoodie wrapped his arms around Amanda, covering her mouth with what Fin could only assume was chloroform. Amanda struggled to break free from his grip, kicking and grabbing at him until drug took effect and she lost consciousness. In a quick and almost effortless swoop the man put his arms under her back and legs and carried her off. Based on his height and size, Amanda didn't stand much of a chance being grabbed from behind.

Olivia shook her head, her mouth on her hand. She was trying to keep her composure but her eyes glossed over. "This is my fault."

"Liv, don't say that. It's this asshole's fault. He did this."

"If I had just waited for her, she wouldn't have been alone."

"We were all tired and wanted to get home. No one could've predicted this," Fin tried to comfort her, secretly feeling guilty himself. Olivia had Noah at home, Kat had a date, he had nothing. He wasn't doing anything than drinking a beer on his couch. There was nothing preventing him from staying with his partner, his friend. Now she was missing. He felt sick.

"He knew where the cameras were to try and avoid facing that direction," Kat said as she typed into her computer, rewinding the footage a bit, pausing on a blurred photo. "Right here is where she grabbed at him and he moved enough. It's blurry but I can see if I can try to sharpen the image enough to get a match through facial recognition."

"Okay, let's get that done asap," Olivia responded. She sighed as she looked down at her phone hearing the ping go off, making sure it wasn't Lucy messaging her. "Oh my god."

"What?" Finn asked as he stood, walking towards her – seeing the shock and unease on his Captain's face. "Liv?"

She turned the phone to show him a message she received from an unknown number, "want to make a trade?"

"What the hell?" Fin responded.

Before Olivia had a chance to respond her phone pinged again, "let's chat. The link is in your email."

Olivia looked up at Fin. She was possessed with both anger and fear. Who were they dealing with? What could his man possibly want in exchange for Amanda? One thing was for certain, when it came to making deals with psychopaths it never went easy or well. Olivia turned swiftly on her heel and rushed into her office, Fin and Kat right behind her.

"Are you sure you should be clicking a random link an anonymous person is sending to you?" Kat asked. "What if it's a trick and a virus to get into our systems."

"Amanda is missing and someone is offering a trade," Fin said so firmly it came off a tad aggressive, wondering how she could even ask such a thing. "We'll take the gamble."

Olivia ignore the two of them as she entered her office and took a seat at her desk. She glanced at them with narrow eyes, as she opened her laptop and began to pull up her email. Before she clicked the link she took a deep breath and composed herself – prepared for whoever and whatever she was about to face. She couldn't let them see her emotions, she needed to remain neutral.

She released the exhale, sat up straight and took one last glance at Kat then Finn. Finn nodded to show support. She nodded back and placed her hand on the curser, clicking on the link in her inbox.

"About time Captain," said the man that appeared on her screen with a smirk.

"Carl Clinton?" Olivia couldn't help the shock and confusion from momentarily appearing on her face. She composed her outward appearance as much as she could before she said anything else. She saw Fin and Kat exchange a look from the corner of her eye. She did her best not to take her attention off Carl or make him away anyone else was present.

"I've been waiting for you."

"What can I do for you Mr. Clinton?" she asked, observing him. She had hoped his background would give her a bit of information as to where he might be located the only thing behind him was a plain light grey painted wall.

"I want to propose a trade," he replied firmly. "My father for your detective."

"Your father is a convicted criminal, we cannot just release him."

"I don't see my father, you don't see your detective," he replied. "Do you understand where I am going with this?"

"Mr. Clinton-"

"Carl," he cut her off.

"Carl… can we take a minute to talk about this? Detective Rollins has nothing to do with your father. She is innocent, and if you hurt her it will only make things worse for you and your father," Olivia replied calmly.

"I don't see my father, you don't see your detective," he repeated firmly. "Do you understand?"

Olivia glanced up at Fin who stared at her with a worried response. She looked back at Carl and nodded slowly, "we will see what we can do."

"That's what I like to hear."

"Carl, you should know your father is no longer in our custody."

"Then you get him back."

"Yes, but you have to understand that these things take time," Olivia attempted to explain. It wasn't as easy as just opening a door and letting him go free. Even if he was in their custody, there were channels to go through. If they just let him go not only would their jobs be in jeopardy but the lives of all his future victims. It took the police over a decade to catch him. They couldn't just let him go free, as badly as Olivia would've liked. But the fact remained, he had already been taken from the precinct which meant they would need to get lawyers involved, and the Deputy Chief, among others. Carl needed to understand the turnaround wouldn't be immediate, and Olivia had great concern that her superiors would refuse to release him just like that. However, if he understood and could agree it would take a bit, it would buy them time to locate her detective.

"That's alright, gives your detective and I a chance to know each other a little better," he said with a sick, smug grin.

Olivia felt her stomach drop, "you said if we get your father released you wouldn't hurt her."

"I said I wouldn't kill her," Carl replied.

"Don't do this, you are not your father."

"I told you my father didn't murder that Murphy girl," he said. He couldn't help but smile as he watched the Captain's face. "Or the redhead… Hanson, I think her name was. I was also particularly fond of Miss Woods. It was a pity we didn't get to spend as long together as I'd liked, but the time came for us to part ways. I have to admit I've been a little lonely lately. I'm looking forward to getting to know your detective a little more personally."

"Please, you don't need to do this."

"Do you want to see her?" he said, coyly smiling.

Olivia slowly nodded, trying to hide the terror in her eyes. She wanted to see Amanda, she wanted to make sure she was okay. She stared at the camera as Carl turned it around. Panning on the fairly bare room. Olivia's clenched her jaw and fist, her heart pounding as the camera set on the image of Amanda bound to a bed.

"See, she's perfectly safe here with me," Carl said.

Olivia watched as Amanda pulled at the ropes that bound her. Olivia could tell she was trying to put on a strong front, but she was terrified. Her blonde hair was in disarray, her skin pale, her body uncomfortable in the thin white gown. Amanda turned her head towards the camera, her eyes clocking with Olivia's.

Olivia watched as Carl walked past the camera towards her detective. Standing over her. He ran his hand down her cheek, eyeing her.

"You told me I'm not my father," Carl said as he looked up at Olivia on the screen. "You're right. I'm not. My father was always so compulsive, and he never stopped to just enjoy what he had. My whole childhood, I never saw a woman around longer than a day or two. He has his way and then would discard them like they were nothing."

"If you're different, you won't do what he's done."

"And I haven't Captain. Truly. No, my father was all about numbers, the quick turnaround. The names you plan to charge him with are barely the tip of the iceberg, and that's just in New York. He was just looking for some fast relief and won't lie – it was the thrill of the kill. That's not me," Carl said as he looked from Olivia, down to Amanda. He began to look her up and down like animal hunting his prey. Olivia could see Amanda shift in discover. Olivia was doing everything she could not to threaten him. She didn't was to instigate him, and cause him to act rashly, risking Amanda's life. "No, for me it was all about the women I was with. The time we spent, the memories we made."

"And then you killed them," Olivia said, wishing she had just bitten her tongue.

"Have you ever seen someone just look soulless? These women, I just wanted to make them feel what I felt, but none of them could take it. None of them lasted more than a few weeks, before I looked at them – touched them, and nothing. Limp. How am I supposed to be with someone like that? Well, if they're going to be lifeless on the inside, might as well be lifeless on the outside too. See? I cared. If they hadn't – well, you know. Their deaths were their own doing. Not like the women my father came across. They were dead from the start."

"You sound like you don't agree with what your father has done."

"We don't always operate on the same paths."

"And yet you're doing all of this for his release?"

"What can I say? Family's family," Carl replied with a smirk, glancing down at Amanda. "Besides, I have a feeling your detective and I are going to get along really well."

"Please don't do this Carl," Olivia said, almost begging, fearing for Amanda's life. "Please don't hurt her."

"Hurt her?" Carl shook his head. "I'm not going to hurt her, not unless you don't hold up your end of the bargain."

"We're working in it," Olivia said. "But need a guarantee you aren't going hurt or lay a hand on her in any way."

"Well, see that wasn't really part of the agreement I proposed."

"I'm changing the agreement."

"No," he responded firmly. "You're not. You see, you will release my father, or you'll be burying your detective. And while you figure out the details on your end, we're going to have a little fun over here."

"Carl-"

"Trust me, Captain Benson. She's in good hands. I never leave a woman unsatisfied," Carl responded with a sinister and cocky grin. Before Olivia had the chance to say another word Carl interrupted her as he walked towards the camera. "And you know what? I'll prove it to you. Just so you know she's in good hands, I'm going to leave the camera on for your viewing pleasure. I'm going to mute you though, so it doesn't ruin the mood. Don't worry though, I'll leave our mic on – makes it better with sound. Don't go anywhere, it's going to be a fun show."

"Carl… Carl!" Olivia yelled at the screen as she watched Carl click a few buttons on his keyboard before giving her one last smirk before turning towards Amanda.

"Find out where they're streaming from, NOW!" Olivia yelled at her detectives. Kat and Fin rushed out of her office to try and see if they could track the location of the live stream.

Olivia felt her chest tightening and her stomach turn as she watched Amanda pulling on the restraints, begging him not to touch her as he made his way towards her. Olivia put her hand to her mouth, feeling useless and horrified of the scene that was unveiling before her. She wanted to close her computer, but she knew if she did they wouldn't have a shot at tracking their whereabouts. She also worried if she stepped away, he would choose to turn the camera off himself before they could trace it.

Tears streamed down Olivia's face as listened to Amanda's screams echoing through the camera as Carl touched her. Olivia watched as he crawled on top of her, his strong frame holding her still. She watched as her forced his way between her legs and began to rape her. Her back arched as she called out crying. Olivia covered her mouth, her body shaking as her she watched her detective, her friend, being assaulted before her very eyes and there was nothing she could do but watch.
