(A.N. Here's the next chapter of Tomorrow's Another Day. I hope you're enjoying the story and please feel free to let me know what you think :) )
The week had passed and it was the twins' birthday. Jacob came running into Gabriella and Lilliana's room, climbing onto the bed and jumping up and down. "It's our birthday! It's our birthday! Wake up Gabi, wake up Lilly! It's our birthday!"
Gabriella sat up and laughed as Lilliana got up and started jumping with her brother. She looked across the room and locked eyes with Troy as he stood at the doorway, smiling at his siblings. "What do you say guys, how about we head down and open some presents?"
The twins cheered and dragged the juniors downstairs to find their parents in the living room nursing a cup of coffee whilst wrapped gifts were spread into two piles on the floor. They eagerly started to unwrap their presents, tearing through the wrapping paper. Both children received a Razor scooter, a DS and Power Rangers figurines from their parents. Lucille and Jack gave Jacob some Tech Decks, Hot wheels, a basketball, lego and a pair of Heelys. Lilliana received some Barbies, a tamagotchi, a Furby, some Zhu Zhu pets and an American Girl doll. Jacob got up first and hugged his parents. "Thank Mom, thanks Dad."
Lilliana followed suit, hugging them both. "Thank you."
Troy spoke up. "Hey guys, Gabriella and I have a few things for you too." The twins turned to the juniors excitedly as Gabriella placed the gift bags in front of them.
As the twins started pulling out their presents, Jack and Lucille looked at the juniors curiously, the latter asking. "When did you two get time to get them presents?"
"We stopped by the mall on our way home this week."
They turned their attention back to the twins as they had their presents out in front of them. Jacob had a pack of Beyblades, a Power Rangers Megazord and a mini basketball game while Lilliana received some Polly Pockets, some new books and a necklace. The young boy and girl thanked the juniors with a hug before they started getting ready for their party.
The party was in full swing, the children from Jacob's and Lilliana's class were running around the backyard. The food was spread out and there was a jumping castle. The teenagers smiled as they saw Jacob surrounded by a group of friends and as they looked around for Lilliana, they saw her sitting with a boy and a girl, the former looked to be a few years older than her whilst the latter seemed a few years younger. Curiously, the juniors walked over to Lucille, the boy asking. "Mom, do you know who Lil is sitting with?"
"I believe that's Sam Cavanaugh's siblings, Colby and Jade."
"Oh ok, we were just curious."
"I wonder why she's spending time with them instead of her own friends, Jade is in kindergarten and Colby is two grades above her I think. "
The juniors shrugged in response. Gabriella turned to her boyfriend. "I'll be back." She walked over to the trio and bent down next to her sister. "Hey Sweet Girl, who are you friends?"
"Colby and Jade, Jade's in kindy and Colby's in grade two."
"Oh that's cool, you're all one grade apart." The trio nodded. "Alright, I'll leave you to it. Have fun guys."
After the party, Gabriella sat with Lilliana on their bed waiting for dinner. "So did you have fun with Jade and Colby today?"
"Uh-huh, I liked playing with them today."
"Why were you playing with them instead of your own grade?"
Lilliana looked down. "I guess 'cause you said that I could be moved up a grade and I wanted to see if Colby's grade was nicer. I liked talking to Colby and I think I'd like to be in his grade better."
"We'd have to talk about this to your parents but are you sure? You know you wouldn't have Jakie in your classes anymore? I just wanna make sure you know how big of a change this is going to be."
"I'm not sure, maybe we could talk to Jack and Lucille and then I can decide?"
"That sounds good Livie." She stood up from her position and held a hand out to her sister. "How about we head down and talk to them now before Jakie comes down." The little girl nodded and they walked downstairs. As soon as they got down the stairs, they ran into Troy. "Hey would you be able to keep Jakie occupied for a bit? Liv wanted to talk to your parents about the whole moving up a grade thing and I think it's best if Jakie's not there for the conversation, I doubt your parents would want him there for it."
"Yeah no worries." He said placing a kiss on both of the girls' cheeks. "Good luck."
The two girls walked into the kitchen to find both the parents there. "Could we talk to you guys for a minute?" The pair nodded so she continued. "When Troy and I went down to talk to the twins' teacher, she kinda talked to us well you about something." They told her to continue. "Basically if you wanted to, she's academically excelling enough that you could put her up a grade."
Lucille nodded slightly. "I wish you had discussed this with us first before talking about it in front of Lilly."
"I know but the conversation kinda came up while we were talking earlier so that's why we've come to you now."
Jack nodded. "Are you wanting to move up Lilly?"
"I think so." The little girl nodded. "I liked talking to Colby today and I think I'd be better friends with him than my class."
The parents looked at each other before sighing, the woman responding. "I'm sorry Lilly but I don't think so."
"But-but why not?"
"There's a lot of things to consider here Sweetheart and I just don't think we can let you do it."
"But Ms Stevens said I'm two grades above for reading, writing and maths."
"And we are very proud of you for that Sweetheart but that's not the only thing we have to think about. We can't let you move up a grade just because you feel like you'll have better friends. We'd have to make sure that you'd be able to keep up with the workload and it would be difficult to transfer you in the middle of the year, you won't know a lot of the stuff that your class has already been taught. You've only just turned seven so your classmates will be a year or two older than you. And what about Jakie? I think it would upset him and make him feel bad if you got to move up a grade and he didn't. You should both remain in the same grade so I'm sorry Lilly but we're not going to move you up a grade."
Lilliana bit her lip and looked at her father sadly, the man responding. "I'm sorry Lil but I have to agree with your mom. You'll stay in first grade with your brother." Lilliana only nodded in response before walking out of the room. Gabriella went to follow but was interrupted. "Gabriella, a word?" The teenager nodded and the man continued. "Look I know your intentions were coming from a good place but in future, could you discuss subjects like this with us before you take them to Lilliana. It puts us in an awkward position and she's too young to be making some of these decisions on her own."
The junior nodded slightly. "I understand but can I just remind you of one thing?" The parents nodded. "I mean no disrespect when I say this but the twins aren't the same. We've grown up in a completely different lifestyle than Jakie has and we've always made our decisions together, we always talked everything through. She's mature beyond her years – which may not always be the best – but we've grown up telling each other everything. I would always tell her exactly what was going on unless I thought that the issue was too mature for her." Gabriella looked down. "I'm not telling you how to parent your child – believe me – and I mean no disrespect, just try to include her in decisions and give her choice in what goes on with her otherwise she'll be frustrated and upset."
Lucille breathed loudly. "We understand Gabriella and we will try but there are a lot of instances where it would be better for her to know as little as possible."
Gabriella only nodded in response and went into the living room to find Lilliana curled up on the couch. She lifted the girl onto her lap, feeling her curl into her. "I'm sorry it didn't turn out the way you wanted it to."
"I guess I was excited about going into grade two and making friends. I would've been special for moving up a grade but I guess not."
Gabriella ran her fingers through the little girl's hair. "I know Baby but you don't have to move up a grade to be special, the fact that you are smart enough to do all that is incredible and you should be so proud of yourself." Lilliana nodded. "Do you understand why your parents said no though?"
"Yeah, they don't wanna make Jakie feel bad if he stays in grade one and I go to grade two. But he's good at some things and I'm good at others, he's better than me at sports but I'm good at academics."
"I know it's hard, are you going to be ok staying in the same grade?"
Lilliana nodded. "Yeah it'll be ok, I just won't have anyone to talk to except Jakie."
"Well you could try and make friends with some of the people in your class but if not, I'm sure you could be friends with Colby even though yous aren't in the same grade."
"Yeah I guess." The little girl hugged her big sister. "Thank you for making me feel better."
"You don't have to say thank you Baby, I'll always try to make you feel better."
The girls moved on to lighter conversations whilst they waited for their food until Lucille finally yelled out that dinner was ready and the four children made their way into the kitchen.
