Kaede had just executed the best rendition of the jump they had been practicing all morning. He had lifted her, and like they were professional skaters they had completed the lift with what could only be considered flawless precision. She had spun around in his arms repositioning like a professional athlete, and held herself so superbly he couldn't believe how strong she was.
"That. Was. So. COOL!" Kaede said before launching herself at him. He caught her and nearly toppled over with the added momentum and the unexpected nature of the jump. Thankfully after that awesome lift they didn't bail on a hug.
"That was awesome! You were amazing! I can't believe how strong you are, sweetie!" Kotetsu said looking down at her with a huge grin. "I really wish someone could have recorded… it… for us?" Kotetsu said as he looked around the rink. There had been a lot of people on the ice, but as the two had prepared for their lift, people must have noticed and given them space because during the lift there had been more than enough room for them. Looking around now he realised that was not the case. People had recognised him and started filming them as they did the lift.
Dozens of people stood around with cell phones directed at them as they skated. Kotetsu quickly turned Kaede towards him, so her face wasn't showing. "A-ah, hi folks…" he said with a wave, I um…"
The murmur started up. "That's Wild Tiger!"
"Who is that girl he's with?"
"Is that his daughter?"
"That lift was awesome!"
"Do you think he would sign something for me?"
"U-um, I really appreciate that you all are excited to see me but… I'd rather you not film my daughter…" He still had Kaede in his arms.
"Dad, let go of me!" she pulled away from him "who cares, it's not like they couldn't look me up anyway, I was on that same broadcast as you back then," she huffed out.
"Baby, it's not about that… it's… the more you expose to the public the easier it is for people to track you down…" he mumbled reaching out for her hand and taking it, his grip too tight for her to pull away, unless she decided to use Hundred Power against him.
Kaede looked pissed, she pulled on his hand a bit, but stopped once she realised he was serious. She looked around the rink and then moved a bit closer to him as it must have dawned on her that her face was going to be plastered all over the internet. Being famous came with a lot of burden.
Most people had put their cell phones away as Kotetsu had requested, but others hadn't. He put his hand on Kaede's shoulder. "Come on Sweetie, it's almost time to go anyway, we need to have something to eat before we go and see the lights," he directed her towards the rinks exit. Kaede didn't seem pleased, but nodded and skated with him.
They got their skates off, a few people came over asking for autographs, Kotetsu signed them quickly, but had his shoes on and was making his way to the exit with Kaede in record time, the skates returned to the rental place since he didn't own his own set.
"I'm so sorry about that sweetie, stupid Agnes broadcasting the whole thing on Hero TV, I can't go anywhere without trouble now," Kotetsu complained as they made their way to the train station. They would head back to Bronze, get changed into fresh clothes that weren't all sweaty from skating, drop off Kaede's skates, and head up to Gold from there. There was limited parking on Gold and it would be easier to get there via train.
"It's fine dad, thanks for doing that lift with me, and hey! You got your wish, kinda, it definitely got filmed" she teased.
"You aren't wrong!" Kotetsu laughed out, as they waited on the train platform. "Our reservation for dinner is up on Gold, so we better hurry if we want to have time to get changed into fancy clothes," he said while pulling on his shirt collar.
They made it back to Bronze, dropped off the skates and got changed into nicer clothes. Kaede wore one of her new outfits, a blue mini skirt with snowflake leggings underneath and a matching blue top that was all glittery. She looked like a little snow princess.
Kotetsu switched up his usual attire slightly. He switched out the green shirt for a black one with white pinstripes. Matched it with a solid white tie and his standard black pants. Top it with his usual vest and he looked pretty good, he thought.
"Hey that looks alright dad!" Kaede said as he came down the stairs straightening his tie.
They made their way to Gold, as soon as they got to the train platform Kotetsu took hold of Kaede's hand. The last thing they needed was for her to acquire some weird power while they were out.
They came up to Justice Tower. "You are going to love this Kaede," he said as he pulled her into the lobby. Front and centre was a giant golden statue of Legend.
Kaede looked up at it for a moment and then turned to her dad, "well, our reservation is at the top right?" She asked, pointing to the elevators to the side. Kids these days! No appreciation for the classics. Kotetsu let out a sigh and nodded walking away from the Legend statue and to the elevators.
"You know, this is the first place Bunny and I kind of worked together. We had that interview Agnes forced us into doing up here, was practically a date, and then that bomb threat happened," he said as they rode the elevator up to the top floor.
"Ya! After I found out you were Wild Tiger I went back and watched everything I could! Barnaby was awesome, almost defusing the bomb, all you did was sit there and record it," she grumbled.
"Ah those TV edits never give me credit. I found the bomb and I was the only reason Barnaby didn't get us blown to smithereens! If I wasn't there he would have just kept trying to diffuse that stupid thing, when if we had just taken action sooner we could have gotten it out of the building without me having to risk my neck getting blown up," he wasn't bitter about never getting credit, not really. But it would be nice if at least his daughter knew he was capable.
"Right, you still had huge damage fines for wrecking the building though didn't you?" Kaede asked as they stepped out of the elevator into the restaurant lounge area.
"No! See the TV always says that but they don't actually slap the fines on me until after a court hearing and in that case it was ruled that the damage to the building as well as the surrounding area would have been much worse if the bomb had gone off inside. So I was actually credited for reducing damages and received Hero points for preventing a catastrophe. But they were awarded overnight and without any announcement," he wasn't bitter, he wasn't!
They made their way to the hostess, "table reservation under Kaburagi," Kotetsu said with what he hoped was a charming smile. The hostess blushed a bit and nodded.
"Right this way," she picked up two menus and headed over to a corner window seat. "As per your request this is our most secluded seat without booking a private room. Please enjoy," She left the menus and walked away.
As they sat Kotetsu waited for Kaede to notice.
"Dad! The room is moving!" She said pointing to the floor. Sure enough the room was slowly rotating against the glass.
"Yup, Justice Tower's top floor is all a restaurant, the floor slowly rotates so you get to see the entire city view over the course of one hour. Isn't it so cool?" He said as he motioned to the floor and then the windows.
"Yes!" She was beaming up at him.
They ordered, ate, chatted, joked, and overall had a great time. Kotetsu pointed out areas where you could see Bronze and Silver stage sections of the city between all the buildings on Gold. He told her stories about criminals he had chased over certain buildings, about how Barnaby had been there for some of them.
They left with full tummies and full hearts. Kotetsu regretted not telling Kaede about being a Hero sooner, maybe their relationship over the years would have been better. He would make up for his mistakes.
They made their way on foot, hand in hand, to the central streets where car traffic had been diverted so that a huge display could be set up. Christmas trees, giant reindeer made of nothing but twinkle lights, snowflakes the size of houses, tunnels of light to walk through, and a whole Christmas village that looked like gingerbread had been set up.
They walked through the display, Kaede squealing with excitement and pulling him all over the area to see this or that up close.
It was well into the night when they finished with the lights, taking the train back down to Bronze, Kaede fast asleep in his arms.
