Kaede was bouncing up and down as they took the train towards Silver stage. She couldn't believe it, she was about to see not only Barnaby again, but she would get to watch them film a commercial for a soap brand, it was probably going to be pretty similar to the commercial they shot before.
They got off the train and made their way to the recording studio, they entered using her father's ID card and a guest pass for her.
As they walked in people all started coming up to them asking them questions or telling them where to go, her dad seemed pretty used to it, answering the questions and being directed with ease, one hand in his pocket the other holding onto her as they made their way through the bustling building.
As they emerged through a set of double doors it was like they walked into another world; cameras hanging from fixtures along the ceiling props everywhere. And right smack dab in the middle of it was Barnaby Brookes Jr. The lighting from the stage was on him highlighting his features even more than usual. He looked like an angel standing there all a glow.
"Hey, Bunny!" Her dad called out waving at him as they made their way over. Her dad let go of her hand and went as if he was going to sling an arm over Barnaby's shoulders but stopped and put his hands into his pockets taking a step back, weird. "Hope you didn't wait long, traffic is stupid today," it was true, the train had been packed and they had to be squished together all the way here.
"No, I just got here as well, they want us in makeup right away though," Barnaby said as he took a step to the left motioning to where a makeup station was set up. He turned back and smiled to Kaede "welcome back to Sternbild Kaede," he took a step forward and held out his hand to her.
She readily grabbed it and shook it enthusiastically. "Hi, Mr Barnaby! Thanks for looking after my dad!" She beamed up at him, her face stretching into the biggest smile she could muster. She was seeing BBJ in the flesh again! She was going to be the coolest kid in school when she got back and told everyone.
Barnaby lowered his face down to their grasped hands and laid a gentle kiss to the top of her hand, "of course, if I didn't look after him who would?" He said with his head tilted slightly and a charming smile on his face. She almost died from excitement at being treated like a princess by Barnaby! He let go of her hand and turned back to her dad. "Let's go to makeup, Agnes already called me and told me we better get this done in less than 5 takes after the voiceover fiasco you pulled," he said as he started walking towards the makeup.
"Come on Kaede, you can hang out with the make-up ladies while they make us pretty," her dad said as he took a few quick steps to catch up to Barnaby. She followed after them right away. Barnaby was acting pretty cold towards her dad, but then again a lot of their commentary over the COMs was often like that so maybe it wasn't unusual, but the fact her dad was keeping a solid meter distance between them kind of was.
Barnaby sat down in front of a mirror, her dad sat down in front of another. Two ladies stood waiting for them with all kinds of bottles and papers and brushes laid out on tables in front of them.
"Ladies, this is my daughter Kaede, she's going to be hanging out during the shoot today, would you mind her staying with you?" Her dad said while smiling brightly at them.
"Aw this sweet lil thing is your daughter?" The lady who was probably going to be working with Barnaby said as she started pulling out brushes to use. "Of course you can stay with us, want to see how we put foundation on for camera work?" She said as she held up a bottle of foundation.
Kaede nodded enthusiastically and moved to stand and watch and the ladies started mixing foundation colours to match their skin tones.
"You've been out in the sun without sunscreen again Kotetsu, you make me mix a new colour for you every time I see you," the lady working on her dad chastised.
"Sooorrry, I never remember to put it on before I go out, plus I tan easy…." He mumbled trying not to move while she worked on him.
"I always get the easier job, working on Barnaby is like working on an already finished painting, I'm just here for touch up, working on your dad though…," the lady working on Barnaby said while looking completely love struck while touching up Barnaby's face.
"I think she just called you old, Old Man," Barnaby teased looking over.
"Ha ha, very funny, make fun of the old guy in front of his daughter…" Kotetsu said with a grin on his face, he was used to being the brunt of jokes even back home.
The ladies finished up their work, Barnaby and her dad both looked weird. They never looked that way on tv or in commercials so why did they look like their faces were… plastic? Way too shadowed?
"Ahh, you noticed they don't look right, think the make-up is done wrong right?" The lady who helped her dad said.
"W-well…" Kaede didn't want to say anything about them being bad at their jobs.
"Cameras pick up information differently than eyes. Also with the bright lights they are going to get washed out and look weird. So the makeup is there to make them look normal. It's part of movie magic," she said with a smile.
The filming went poorly, her dad kept making mistakes in his lines, which everyone seemed to be used to so that wasn't the issue. The issue was, the two of them when they were out of their power suits were supposed to work together to get the grime off of a counter using a giant sponge. It wasn't heavy or anything but they kept having trouble moving it because they seemed to be unable to get close to one another. Any time an elbow touched or a hand slipped or their feet were too close her dad practically jumped away from Barnaby and whenever Barnaby felt he was too close he would drop the sponge. It took over two hours to complete the out of suit takes. As soon as they were in their power suits using the sponge problems solved, they did it in two takes, her dad's lines got messed up the first time, but it was done.
Why were they acting so weird? What had happened that they couldn't be near each other? Kaede ponders this the whole time they were recording.
