Lyra has spent the last few days with Bunny.

She doesn't quite understand why.

She remembers crying in her bathroom, festering in self-hatred as per usual, before she'd seen Bunny and Pasha doing yoga outside.

They weren't moving in sync at all, and yet something about their movements had hit Lyra; sent her to tears, even. It was so tranquil and graceful; balanced.

Then Lyra watched them hug each other. It was so tight, so loving. Lyra could hear Bunny making little noises of love, as they embraced their father so tightly.

Then everything goes fuzzy, and the next thing Lyra remembers is being in the warm embrace of Bunny's home, staring at a taxidermied deer as she ate something.

She has eaten a few things whilst with Bunny. What was it she ate? Oh, it doesn't matter. It tasted good, so surely it must've been detrimental to her weight. Surely.

"Is that, um, vegan?" Lyra had asked, gesturing to the deer.

Bunny had looked at the deer, "Yeah. Baba likes taxidermy, he always says it's a shame to see dead animals on the road. He doesn't kill them himself."

"Didn't," Pasha had corrected, "Bunny, didn't."

"Isn't that disrespectful?" Lyra asked, "To the body?"

"Why?" Bunny smiled, "It wasn't still in there."

"What?"

"The spirit," Pasha said, "The body is useless without the spirit."

"Where's the spirit?" Lyra asked, "Where does it go?"

They didn't answer, and that's where Lyra's memory fades into tired studying and Bunny giggling.

Now Lyra is with Bunny again, only Maddie is here now. They've just met with their professor for the research project—Kokoro Iwasaki—for the first time.

According to Bunny, Iwasaki used to work for the government. They didn't say why, and Lyra wonders why the government would need a biophysicist, but she doesn't ask.

Iwasaki was based in the basement of the physics department. Lyra had never been down there before, and the basements have been blocked off ever since the incident.

Lyra remembers when they blocked off the basements.

First, they said it was an accident, then they claimed it was repairs. They were very firm about that. They held lots of assemblies just saying; 'The basements are off-limits due to repairs. Repairs. That's all. Everything's fine. It's just repairs. Everything's fine. Don't worry.'

No one bought it, even with the school's insistence. It was hard not to notice the sudden disappearance of certain biology and physics professors and some of the more popular students—Bunny and Kazuo, namely—all of whom had been working on something together.

It was also hard to ignore the number of government workers hanging around, and how worried they looked as they dived in and out of the basement.

Nowadays the basement is clear of the government's presence, but evidence of what was hangs around. It's in the air, in each room. Something always remains.

Lyra is looking at an old missing person's poster on the basement wall. It's Kazuo's. It tells her in big letters to contact the government if she knows anything, and in small letters it gives her details for a single family member; Kazuo's uncle, a Mr Yuki Besho.

Kazuo's posters are still the most prevalent. Lyra took one home once; she doesn't quite remember why, but she likes looking at it. She likes knowing what Kazuo looks like. Does he look like that anymore?

Bunny doesn't seem to notice the posters. Perhaps on purpose. Bunny just talks about how Professor Iwasaki is 'like, such a milf!', and how super totally awesome this research project is going to be.

Now, Bunny is saying, "Lyra, hurry up! We have to go to study group!"

Lyra doesn't want to go to study group. Tsukiyama will be there and he makes Lyra feel strange things whilst he insults her in his head.

They also study outside, which Lyra doesn't really like, because she refuses to take her jacket off, so sits with an uncomfortable sheet of sweat growing over her skin. She can't quite focus, but gets through it.

Afterwards, Bunny says, "Lyra, we're going to pole class, do you wanna come?"

"Um. Pole class?"

"Yup. Maddie's teaching. It's Mr Tsukiyama's first class too, and we've got the whole room to ourselves. Oh, and Dad's coming. It's super fun, and I'm not saying that because I have to. I promise."

"Uh, I don't know."

"It's fun, I promise, and safe. Super safe. And afterwards we were gonna do something fun! And you don't have school tomorrow, right?"

"...No."

"Then you should come!"

"Uh, okay," Lyra isn't sure she wants to, but she knows she'll only spend her time at home moping and trying desperately to sleep.

Bunny giggles and takes Lyra's hand, "C'mon then!"

The aerial fitness studio is quite close to the university. Lyra often forgets how close the Red Light Districts is to the university, most of the time she tries to ignore it.

Lyra has never been to a pole studio before, and is slightly taken aback by how strange it is. The room they are in is incredibly well-lit, with has lots of poles and aerial hoops, and multicoloured mats lined up along a single wall. The rest of the walls are covered in mirrors.

Lyra feels herself panic. Oh, I bet they only invited me so they could make fun of me in the mirrors. This was a setup, wasn't it? They just want to laugh at me!

"Lyra, are you okay?" Maddie asks, "You look a little nervous. Don't worry. I'm a good teacher, I promise," She smiles.

"Aw, don't be nervous, Lyra," Bunny shouts, interrupting a conversation between her and Tsukiyama that looked awfully close, "We told you; it's super fun!"

"Yeah," Dory says, "Once it stops hurting," He laughs.

"It hurts? How?" Lyra asks.

"Haven't you exercised before?" Tsukiyama asks, still terribly close to Bunny.

"Of course I have!" Lyra snaps.

Everyone's silent for a moment, a moment that lasts an eternity as Lyra feels everyone's eyes on her.

"Anyway," Maddie says, "It doesn't hurt that bad. Right, Bunny?"

"I mean, it's not that bad. You'll be all bruises and blisters for a bit. I mean. when I started, I sliced one of my fingers open on the pole, because like, your skin has to get used to the pole, so when you're a beginner and you go into tricks, it makes the skin really raw, and it's like, really painful. But like, it's not permanent, so you'll be fine!" Bunny chirps, before skipping off to start her warmups.

"That's not how I would've put it, but..." Maddie sighs, "You'll be fine."

"Um. Why are there mirrors everywhere?"

"That's just to check form. You don't have to use them."

"...They're everywhere."

"Yeah. We have to be safe, besides, they make dancing easier. You'll get used to it," Maddie stops, before waving to Pasha, who's just arrived.

"Hi, dad!" Bunny calls out.

Pasha smiles, setting his things down, "Hi, sweeties! How was your day?"

"It's been very good, actually, I did loads of super cool stuff. And now I'm at pole class with everyone, so it's even better!"

"That's so great, Bunny," Pasha smiles, before looking to Tsukiyama and Lyra, "Hello again."

"Monsieur Sorokin," Tsukiyama says, edging closer to Pasha, "I had no idea you did this too! Like father, like daughter?"

"Yeah," Pasha smiles, "I started when Bunny did, but I'm not as good as them."

"Don't say that. You're really good!" Bunny cries.

"I know, Bunny, but look at you! Doing all your clever handstands and stuff! I can't do all that."

"I'm working on my handstand spins now, oooh! And my bird of paradise now too. You wanna see?"

"Of course, when you're warmed up though, okay? Maddie, can I join you guys' warm-up?"

"Sure, I was just about to start."

The warmup is longer and more tiring than usual, but according to Maddie that's normal for a pole class.

When it's finished, Pasha asks; "Lyra, is that what you're wearing?"

"Why? What's uh, wrong with it?"

"Nothing," Maddie says, "But for pole, it's easier if you wear less, just for a stronger grip on the pole. You'll see what I mean."

"Oh...okay."

"Didn't you do any research?" Tsukiyama asks.

"It's fine, Lyra, we're not doing anything big today, so she's fine."

"We're not?" Tsukiyama says, "But—"

"This is your first class. What were you expecting to do?"

"Well, seeing as I do callisthenics and gymnastics every day, Mademoiselle, I thought—"

"No, no, no, stop there," Maddie shakes her head, "I hear this from so many beginners and they usually end up injured."

"She's right," Bunny says, "You don't know how to work with the pole unless you work with the pole. You just have more strength and flexibility. You're still a beginner."

"Yes. So for now, you'll be starting at the beginning, like everyone else."

Tsukiyama huffs, but remains silent. Maddie seems satisfied and starts instructing.

She spends the first part of the class going over grips. Which are strange at first, but it's satisfying whenever Lyra understands one. She's less skilled with the conditioning, which Tsukiyama excels at.

The last part of the class is spent on tricks and transitions.

"So this," Maddie is saying, "Is called an easy-up, and we're gonna do four variations with different grips, ok? So, it's pretty easy—"

"Well, the clue's in the name."

"If you're used to it," Maddie continues, "Now, we'll do a basic pole grip first. So just watch me first," Maddie demonstrates the trick, "See? It's easy once you've got it."

"Um," Lyra blushes, raising her hand, "What if you can't do that? Um. You know...pull yourself up."

Tsukiyama scoffs, but Maddie smiles, "Try and step up, but mainly, focus on those push-pull forces; they'll what'll get you there. Weight needs to be in the forearms, remember? Don't worry, I'm right here to help you, okay?"

Lyra nods.

"Oh, and Tsukiyama, please stop trying things without me."

"You're taking too long and it's so easy, see? I just did it, perfectly."

"No, no, no," Says Dory, who's been doing a more advanced class with Pasha, "You were pulling your shoulder down."

"Yeah," Maddie says, "Just let it rise up, and make sure you're pushing the bottom hand, pulling the top."

"That's what I was doing."

"Just wait until I'm with you, please."

"Maddie?" Pasha says, "I can help, if you need to be with Lyra."

"Oh, you don't have to do that," Tsukiyama says, smiling, "You're so busy with your own class. I wouldn't want to distract you."

"Really, I don't mind."

Maddie sighs, "Thanks, Pasha. Lyra, c'mon, your turn."

Lyra fails anyway, even without Tsukiyama constantly telling Maddie how good he is at pole.

"You'll get there," Maddie says, after Lyra has failed on all four grips, "It takes a lot of time."

"Really?" Lyra says, watching as Tsukiyama performs it completely fine.

"Trust the process," Maddie smiles, touching Lyra's arm, "Now, why don't we work on a couple of spins before we end?"

"We're ending already?" Tsukiyama asks.

"Almost. Now; spins! These are my favourite. Oh, God, Lyra, don't look so scared. I promise you'll be able to do it. I'll help you, okay?"

Lyra nods, though it seems absolutely terrifying to her.

"What if I fall?"

"You won't. The pole'll stop that as long as you're gripping properly. See? Tsukiyama's got it. C'mon, just give it a try."

Lyra tries, thinking she's never gonna do it, but to her surprise, she does it on her second try.

"That's it!" Maddie says, clapping, "See? I knew you'd do it!"

"That felt, um, really weird."

"You get used to it, believe me. Did you enjoy it though?"

Lyra blushes, "...Yeah."

"Yay! Now do the other side, c'mon! You got it, Lyra, I promise you."

Lyra is able to repeat the move several times before she feels too dizzy, which Maddie says is normal. Tsukiyama says he doesn't feel dizzy at all, but Lyra thinks he looks paler than usual.

Maddie begins going through stretching and notes on off-pole conditioning, but all Lyra can focus on is Bunny, who's been doing a separate training session.

They've been jumping from one pole to another, doing tricks upside down, often with all their weight held in a single limb.

Now they're practicing a routine to some classical synth instrumental which'll be stuck in Lyra's head for the rest of the day.

As always, Bunny is on perfect form; managing to leap from pole to pole with graceful power, their body controlled by whatever the music desires.

Lyra is thinking about how much better Bunny is than her, and how much Bunny is showing off. Any positive feelings gained from anything she's accomplished are gone now, and all down to Bunny's mere existence.

"You did really well," Pasha says, as Lyra stares at Bunny.

"Huh? Oh, no, I-"

"You should be proud of yourself. You did really good. Do you think you'll come to another class?"

"Uh..."

Bunny is talking to Tsukiyama now, telling him how wonderful he did, as he gushes over them in return.

"Uh. Yeah," Lyra nods.

"That's great. Also, we've got a pole at home, you know," He continues, "Two, actually. You should come over sometime, just for quieter sessions, you know? Me or Bunny would help you with it."

"Um. That's really, uh, nice...Thanks."

Pasha smiles, before beginning to gather his things.

"Are you going now, Pasha?" Maddie calls out.

"Yes, I am. Bunny? Come over here."

"Ok!" Bunny rushes over and hugs Pasha, "We won't be late, I promise."

"Good, and if you get tired call me and I'll come pick you up, okay?"

"Uh-huh. I will. I love you, dad."

"I love you too," He kisses her head, before Bunny runs off again.

"Is Lyra coming with us?" Dory asks.

"I don't know. Are you?"

"Um. Coming where?"

"Just a nearby club, but Bunny and Maddie have to go see their manager first about something. It'll be fun though."

"Or I can just take you home, if you want," Pasha suggests.

"Um, no, thank you. It's fine...I'll go."

Lyra isn't sure why she agrees to go. She could've gone home to try to sleep, but that's never worked before and she has nothing better to do, so she's here now, sitting with Tsukiyama and Dory in silence as Bunny and Maddie talk loudly to their manager, who Lyra recognises, but can't quite place.

Lyra watches as the manager gives Bunny and Maddie gifts of flowers, sweets, even jewellery. Tsukiyama leans forward, watching intently as the manager strokes Bunny's shoulder, laughing softly at something she said. He pulls Bunny into him, his arm resting around their waist. Bunny doesn't seem to care, complimenting him and giggling at whatever he says.

Even when Bunny starts pulling away, his hand seems stuck to her waist. Before they separate, he gives her another gift; a hairgrip that Bunny immediately fits into her beautiful hair. As Bunny approaches, Lyra sees that it's a pink starfish.

Tsukiyama glares at the hair grip, he asks to see it, and says, "It's...pretty, I suppose, but those jewels are so fake, Little Bunny. It's shameful that you've been presented with such a thing!"

"But they're sparkly."

"Yes, that doesn't make them real. I mean, look at-"

"They're sparkly. I like sparkly things. Besides, I like fake jewels anyway."

"You do? Vraiment?"

Bunny nods, "They're better for the planet...most of the time. Anyway, can we go now? I don't want to be here anymore."

Lyra doesn't know where they're going, she just follows along, as usual, listening to whatever the others are talking about. Normally, Bunny is talking to Tsukiyama about crystals or how if they still had a menstrual cycle they'd align it to the moon, but today, Bunny walks next to Lyra.

They smile, and say, "Lyra! I didn't get to tell you earlier. but I saw you doing your fireman spin and I thought it was really pretty! You should be so proud of yourself!"

"Oh...No, it was uh, so bad, I-"

"Hey! Don't say that. It was great!"

"But it, uh, wasn't, not compared to—"

"Don't ever compare. That'll like, kill you, you know?" Bunny says, severely, "Besides, most of us have been doing pole or dancing ages, and Tsukiyama does gymnastics, and like, gymnasts always have advantages in pole. But you still did amazingly, better than me in my first class."

"Really?" Lyra struggles to believe she has ever been better than Bunny in anything.

"Yeah, My first class sucked! I cried. Seriously, I just like, broke down in front of everyone, right, Allan?" Bunny says to the green toy that looks at Lyra, only now it seems to look at Bunny.

Bunny is nodding intensely to its silent response, "Exactly, Allan, but at least you were there with me! I mean, what would I have done otherwise? Aha!"

Bunny kisses its soft head, before turning back to Lyra, "See? It was like, very bad, but look at me now! You just have to like, take your time. Believe me, next class you'll be able to do more. I promise."

"Um. Sure, Bunny, sure."

Bunny smiles and squeezes Lyra's hand. Lyra blushes and wonders what to do in return. Bunny keeps smiling, her acrylic nails digging deep into Lyra's hand, feeling almost like they're about to puncture it. It's almost soothing, Lyra thinks.

Bunny doesn't let go of Lyra's hand until they arrive at a club near the river. Bunny claims it's one of the few LGBTQ friendly clubs in the area alongside her own club, so they go there often, apparently.

It's less crowded than Lyra thought, but still too crowded. Dory gets her a drink, he says it'll help her calm down. The drink is bright green and hurts Lyra's throat.

She drinks three of them before sitting down. She feels nauseous. She clutches her head and closes her eyes for a moment.

She opens them, and two hours have passed. She's sweating, but colder than usual, and she feels quite sick.

Lyra looks around, trying to see if anyone is nearby. Tsukiyama is sat at the same table, doing something on his phone and refusing to look at her. Bunny has disappeared, but their bag is here and the green toy is sat next to Lyra, staring into the club.

Lyra reaches out and pokes the toy. It flops onto its tummy, and Lyra feels a pang of tremendous guilt.

"Sorry," She says, propping it back up. It stares at her. It smiles. It makes a noise Lyra cannot understand. She's probably just imagining it. She should really stop looking at it now.

Another hour dies, and Bunny reappears with Maddie and Dory, the three of them hugging each other in a tight circle.

They hug in a way that looks painful and suffocating. Lyra imagines the three of them squeezing each other to death; popping and bursting into a mess of flesh, blood, and bone, all whilst whispering that they'll love each other to the ends of the Universe.

She looks over at Tsukiyama. He's staring at the suffocating crush of love, aggressively chewing his lip. Lyra almost says something to him, but stops herself; she knows he'll probably just insult her.

She looks back at the group, wishing someone would hug her like that.

They hug for what seems like an age, until Bunny lets go, and they all seem to separate immediately; like they've been freed from a spell.

Bunny rushes off to dance alone, Maddie goes to the bar, and Dory comes back to sit next to Tsukiyama.

Another hour crumbles away, and Bunny returns to tell Lyra they need to go outside for a moment, could she watch her drink?

Lyra says yes, though she really needs to go to the toilet and Bunny takes a long time. She also wants to get away from Dory and Tsukiyama, who are next to her now and are getting increasingly intimate.

When she returns, the green toy is sat next to Bunny's drink, staring at Lyra with its harmlessly threatening smile.

Dory is sitting next to Tsukiyama now, saying, "You know exactly why I don't want to do this."

"Doryo, come on, don't be so silly-"

"I'm not a toy, Zuki!" Dory snaps, "You can't keep doing this to me when you know how I feel about you-"

"Your feelings aren't my responsibility."

"Then stop using me!" Dory sounds like he's about to cry.

Lyra steps away; she shouldn't get involved. Maddie is talking to a woman at the bar, and Lyra doesn't want to bother her, so goes outside.

The night air is cool and fresh, with a soft breeze. It's easy to breathe it in, and it soothes Lyra's rattled nerves.

The only distraction is the government announcement blaring through the streets.

'ATTENTION. THE GENERAL CURFEW ENDS IN THIRTY MINUTES. THIRTY MINUTES. ALL ESTABLISHED CITIZENS AND TOURISTS SHOULD BEGIN TO EXIT THE WARD. WE REPEAT. THE GENERAL CURFEW ENDS IN THIRTY MINUTES. THIRTY MINUTES. ALL ESTABLISHED-'

Lyra is used to the announcements. They come on four times a day and every half hour after midnight. They often interrupt her failed attempts at sleep.

Something about the bright, chiming security alert and the overly chirpy voice becomes comforting after a while, especially when alone at four in the morning.

Lyra glances around, seeing wary tourists and sensible salarymen starting to head to their hotels or the ward's exit points, before noticing Bunny stood by the river.

She approaches, hearing Bunny mumbling about something. She hears Kazuo's name, followed by frustrated sobs and a slight cackle, before Bunny sniffles and says, "Why did you do that? Why did you do that to me?"

"Um. Bunny?" Lyra calls out.

"Huh?" Bunny looks up, "Oh. Hi!"

Their face is covered in blood. It surrounds their nose and mouth, and their hands are full of tiny crimson pools that drool onto the floor.

They're smiling brightly, with blood seeping into their mouth and between their teeth.

Lyra gasps, "Wh-Oh my God. Uh...Wha-Ar-Are you okay?"

"Yeah. I'm just trying to protect my outfit," Bunny says. The blood is on her neck, dripping onto the pink crop top Bunny was wearing.

"No. Your face."

"Oh, I have super bad nosebleeds, like, a lot," Bunny says, spitting out some blood, "Aw, man!" They say, looking at their blood-soaked outfit, "I failed."

"Do you need tissues?"

"Huh? Oh! That's a good idea; I didn't think of that! Good ideas, Lyra! Yes. I would really like a tissue."

Lyra hands Bunny some tissues. Bunny sits at the river's edge, covering her face in the tissues. Lyra sits next to her.

They sit in silence, before Bunny says, "Oh! I got you something the other day."

"Um. You what?"

"I got you a present, Lyra."

"Why?"

"Because I thought you'd like it! It's in my bag, you get it, I don't want it to get all bloody."

Lyra sifts through Bunny's bag, which appears endless. It's full of makeup, strawberry-flavoured Sanrio condoms, and a faded photo of Pasha with a man Lyra doesn't recognise.

The man's wearing a lilac dress and smiling at a blonde child that could only be Bunny, who's giggling whilst clutching a stuffed elephant to her chest.

"Can't you find it?" Bunny asks, looking over, "That's not your gift, silly!"

"Uh. Sorry, I just—"

"Yours is the one in the sparkly paper."

Lyra puts the photo back and grabs the wrapped gift. It's a tiny stuffed dinosaur wearing a little backpack.

"I saw it in the toy-store the other day, so I got it for you."

"A toy?"

"Yeah! Because sometimes you look really worried and upset - no offense! I get upset a lot too because I'm very emotional, and having these cuddlies makes me feel safe. So I thought maybe it'd help you as well!"

"...What?"

"It might not help, but it's cute, right? Oh, and the little backpack works too. Isn't that awesome?"

"Yeah," Lyra looks at the dinosaur, giving a small smile, "Thanks."

"It's okay!" Bunny removes the tissue from her face, smiling, "I think it's stopped now."

Their face is still covered in blood. They sigh, "I guess I should go to the bathroom. Or maybe I should just go home. I do look a little suspicious. God, I bet those reptilian fucks at the government offices would love that. They'd probably send me straight back to the hospital, or worse."

"Government offices?"

"Yeah, you know, those little boxes on the edge of each ward."

"To monitor curfews?"

"That's what they say," Bunny sniffles, "But they don't let anyone who works here leave before the Shinjuku curfew, not unless we give them something in return, and even then, that's only if we're pretty enough."

"They can do that?"

"They do it," Bunny pauses, "And that's not even the worst of it," Bunny wipes her nose again, "I just don't understand how they can—"

Bunny stops, trembling and wiping their nose again, "How they can be so fucking cruel? You know?"

Lyra nods silently. She isn't sure she believes what Bunny said - surely they wouldn't be able to get away with that - but Bunny seems upset, so Lyra takes Bunny's hand in here.

Bunny squeezes it in return. Lyra feels the wet blood on Bunny's hand. She wonders if it has left a blood print on her hand. She wonders why she wondered that.

Bunny looks into Lyra's eyes, making her blush. Bunny leans closer to Lyra, until the smell of blood-tinged raspberry fills her nose.

Lyra is about to say something, but before she can, Bunny pulls her into a warm embrace.

Lyra whimpers as she feels her body tense. Her skin starts to become tender, and her bones feel as though they're about to snap.

Lyra would usually protest, but she doesn't.

She has no desire to protest.

All she can do is accept Bunny's embrace, and wait for her body to begin to break.

Hey guys!

So, I'm sorry this chapter took a little longer than usual. However, I don't have a schedule, and my mental health was suffering the last month, and I'm actually working on a few things right now, one of which I wanna talk about right now.

I'm hosting a Tokyo Ghoul fandom event!

It's a writing event, but if you haven't written anything and you want to join, that's fine too! Everyone is welcome.

But what is this event?

Well, we'll be working in a group chat or my Discord, and we'll be adapting the script of a musical to Tokyo Ghoul.

The musical in question is Six the Musical. It's an awesome show and super positive, so I recommend you check it out!

It's set as more of a pop concert than a musical, so anyone who doesn't like musicals will enjoy it too!

More information on the event can be found on my social media.

Comments and shares are appreciated. Thanks for reading, and I hope y'all have a wonderfully positive day!
