A Quick Intermission
Ruby, Jaune, and Revati are entering Beacon's auditorium, which is filled with people.
"Ruby! Over here! I saved you a spot!" Yang yells out to Ruby while waving. "Oh! Hey I-I gotta go! I'll see you guys after the ceremony!" Ruby says to Jaune and Revati as she leaves. "Hey wait! Sigh Ah, great. Where am I supposed to find another nice, quirky girl to talk to?!" Jaune asks before turning to Revati and abashedly saying, "Not that there is anything wrong with you, Revati!" "Y-Ya, th-thanks," Revati upsettingly responds. All the while another girl was looking at the blond, the girl had pale skin, vivid green eyes with light-green eyeshadow, and long red hair done in a waist-length ponytail curled slightly into a loose ringlet, she is wearing a brown overbust corset with a vertical strip of lighter brown down the centre, an elastic, black, A-line mini skirt, brown opera-length gloves, and a red ankle-length sash wrapped around her skirt, she also wears a belt with a small circular bronze plate with a brown emblem that looks like a spear being thrust from the bottom right and separating two halves of a circle on her right hip, while on her left hip are two pouches, she is also wearing a brown circlet adorned with a pair of small green teardrop-shaped emeralds on thin chains underneath her hair, a large bronze gorget around her neck and a bronze bracelet on the upper half of her left arm, she wears bronze armour consisting of greaves that start below mid-thigh and continue down into her boots, a pair of cuisses that begin mid-thigh and end slightly above the knee, and a bracer on her left arm, she also wore brown high-heeled boots with bronze trim, she has her weapons, a red and bronze spear and shield on her back.
"How's your first day going, little sister?" Yang asks Ruby whilst crossing her arms. "You mean since you ditched me and I exploded?" Ruby frustratingly asks, "Yikes! Meltdown already?" Yang asks back. "No, I literally exploded a hole in front of the school! And there was some fire, and I think some ice...?" Ruby explains to Yang. "Th-There was some electricity, t-too," Revati says suddenly appearing beside Ruby, surprising her for a second. "Are you being sarcastic?" Yang amusingly questions with a broad smile on her face. Ruby scoffs before she further explains, "I wish! I tripped over some crabby girl's luggage, and then she yelled at me, and then I sneezed, and then I exploded, and then she yelled at me again, and I felt really, really bad, and I just wanted her to stop yelling at me!" "You!" Weiss yells from right behind Ruby scaring her into her sister's arms and frightening Revati, causing him to hide behind Yang and shake in fright. "Oh, God, it's happening again!" Ruby says in fright. "You're lucky we weren't blown off the side of the cliff!" Weiss shouts at Ruby, "Y-You t-two w-weren't th-that c-close t-to th-the e-edge," Revati mumbled out in fear, though Weiss obviously still heard this as she looks down and growls at him, making him squeak in fear and continue to hide behind Yang.
"Oh my god, you really exploded," Yang realizes with a deadpan. "It was an accident," Ruby says to Yang as she gets out of her sister's arms before repeating the same thing to Weiss, who holds up a pamphlet titled "Dust for dummies and other Inadequate Individuals" to Ruby, who asks, "What's this?" "The Schnee Dust Company is not responsible for any injuries or damages sustained while operating a Schnee Dust Company product. Although not mandatory, the Schnee Family highly encourages their customers to read and familiarize themselves with this easy to follow guide to Dust applications and practices in the field," Weiss reads out loud, reading faster and in a higher pitch the further she reads, to Ruby who cluelessly says, "Uuhhh...?" "You really wanna start making things up to me?" Weiss asks, while Ruby still cluelessly responds with, "Absolutely?" before Weiss hands her the pamphlet and firmly tells her, "Read this, and don't ever speak to me again."
"Look, uh, it sounds like you two just got off on the wrong foot. Why don't you start over and try to be friends, okay?" Yang intervenes which Ruby enthusiastically agrees to as she puts the pamphlet away, "Yeah! Good idea, sis!" she clears her throat and holds out her hand to Weiss, "Hello, Weiss! I'm Ruby! Wanna hang out? We can go shopping for school supplies!" "Yeah! And we can paint our nails and try on clothes and talk about cut boys, like tall, blond, and scraggly over there! Weiss says in fake enthusiasm, getting Jaune's attention as he responds with, "Hm?" Ruby asks in hope, "Wow, really?!" to which after dead silence, Weiss responds with a glare and emphasizes, "No." The girls' attention is then drawn to the stage as the headmaster prepares the microphone.
The headmaster, whose name is Ozpin, is a middle-aged man with a light complexion, tousled silver hair, brown eyes with black eyebrows, and sharp facial features, he wears shaded spectacles, an unzipped black suit over a dark green buttoned vest and green shirt, with long, dark-green pants and black trouser shoes, he also has a small, purple cross-shaped pin on the dark green cowl around his neck. He walks around with a grey cane that has an embellished pattern in the handle which also has a large knuckle guard, a larger area at the bottom of the handle contains small gold-coloured gears, with the shaft being square-shaped. He readies the microphone before speaking into it, "I'll... keep this brief. You have travelled here today in search of knowledge, to hone your craft and acquire new skills, and when you have finished, you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people. But I look amongst you, and all I see is wasted energy, in need of purpose, direction." This remark causes many students to whisper among themselves before Ozpin continues, "You assume knowledge will free you of this, but your time at this school will prove that knowledge can only carry you so far. It is up to you to take the first step." Ozpin finishes and then leaves.
As he leaves a woman steps up to the microphone, her name is Glynda Goodwitch, she is a middle-aged woman with very light-blonde hair tied back into a bun with a curl hanging down the right side of her face, with bright green eyes with thin ovular glasses, she wears dangling teal earrings and a teal pendant on her collar, she wears a white long-sleeved, pleated top that has a wide keyhole neckline and gauntlet cuffs that flare in pleats at the wrist, with a black high-waisted pencil skirt with bronze buttons and black fading into brown stockings with black boots with bronze heels and a cape that is purple on the inside and black on the outside, the cut of the cape is stylized to end in flames and arrows with a row of diamond-shaped bronze beads on the back, above this line of beads a purple emblem resembling a tiara. As Glynda steps up to the microphone she informs the students that, "You will gather in the ballroom tonight; tomorrow, your initiation begins. Be ready. You are dismissed."
"He seemed kind of... off," Yang says, referring to Ozpin. "It's almost like he wasn't even there," Ruby agrees. "I'm a natural blond, you know!" Jaune says as he approaches Weiss from the side, causing the girl to put a hand to her face in exasperation.
Now night time at Beacon, students are scattered around the auditorium in sleeping bags, Ruby is in her pajamas which consist of a black tank top with a heart-shaped Beowolf design on the chest, long white pants decorated with pink roses, and a black sleeping mask with triangular red eyes, she is currently writing in her journal before Yang crashes next to her in her own pajamas, which is simply an orange tank top with her emblem on the front in red, and black boy shorts.
"It's like a big slumber party!" Yang enthusiastically says, to which Ruby responds without looking up from her journal, "I don't think dad would approve of all the boys, though." "I know I do," she purrs looking at several muscular shirtless guys, before she spots Jaune in blue footie pajamas with a a white bunny face on the chest and blue bunny slippers as he waved to her. "What's that?" Yang asks turning her attention to what Ruby is writing, "A letter to the gang back at Signal. I promised to tell them all about Beacon and how things are going," Ruby simply answers. "Aw, that's so cuuuute!" Yang coos before being knocked back by a pillow thrown at her face. "Shut up! I didn't get to take my friends with me to school! It's weird not knowing anyone here!" Ruby frustratingly yells at Yang who tries to placate her younger sister, "What about Jaune? He's... nice! And Revati, though odd, he seems friendly enough! Plus two friends! That's a two hundred percent increase!" "Pretty sure Weiss counts as a negative friend," Ruby dejectedly says as she turns onto her back. "There's no such things as negative friends! You just made two friends and one enemy!" Yang says before being hit with a dog shaped pillow, then continues, "Look, it's only been one day. Trust me; you've got friends all around you! You just haven't met them yet!" Yang says trying to raise Ruby's spirit.
They then notice a candle being lit nearby, seeing the girl in black from earlier leaning against a wall holding her book and wearing a black yukata style shirt with a purple undershirt and black skirt with a black obi wrapped around the waist and tied with black and white string while having a discussion with Revati, whose is wearing a blue hoodie with grey sweatpants. "That girl..." Ruby trails off, "You know her?" Yang asks Ruby. "Not really. She saw what happened this morning, but left before I could say anything," Ruby answers, causing Yang to brighten up and grab Ruby and lift her up while saying, "Well, now's your chance!" "Wait! What are you doing?!" Ruby cries out in panic. The girl and Revati look over to see Yang pulling a struggling Ruby towards them. "Hel-looooo! I believe you two may know each other?" Yang says in a sing-song voice to the girl.
"Aren't you... that girl that exploded?" She asks, before Revati responds, "H-her name is Ruby R-Rose, she's quite nice a-actually." "I might as well introduce myself, then. I'm Blake," the girl introduces herself. "Well, Blake, I'm Yang, Ruby's older sister! I like your bow!" Yang enthusiastically introduces herself to Blake. "Thanks, and although I don't want to be rude, could you please leave, I was about to read my book," Blake firmly but nicely asks, "O-Oh, ya, s-sure thing! Sorry to h-have kept you, my a-apologies," Revati apologizes. "What's it about?" Ruby asks, "Huh?" comes Blake's response. "Your book. Does it have a name?" "Well... i-it's about a man with two souls, each fighting for control over his body," Blake explains, Revati noticeable stiffens at this and remarks, "O-Oh, I-I've h-heard of th-that book! I-I read through m-most of it b-but n-never f-finished, m-may I borrow it w-when you're f-finished, assuming th-that it doesn't b-bother you, i-in which c-case f-forget I s-said anything," "Sure, no problem," Blake responds. "Oh, yeah... that's real lovely!" Yang sarcastically says before Ruby says, "I love books. Yang used to read to me every night before bed. Stories of heroes and monsters... they're one of the reasons I want to be a Huntress!" At this Blake laughs a bit before responding, "And why is that? Hoping you'll live happily ever after?" "Well, I'm hoping we all will. As a girl, I wanted to be just like those heroes in the books... someone who fought for what was right, and protected people who couldn't protect themselves!" Ruby proclaims. "W-Wow Ruby, that's v-very inspiring," Revati says in awe, "That's... very ambitious for a child. Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairytale," Blake says frowning, to which Ruby responds with her patent optimism, "Well, that's why we're here! To make it better." "Oh, I am so proud of my baby sister," Yang says as she brings Ruby into a hug that lifts her off the ground, to which Ruby yells out while trying to get away, "Cut it out!" before the two sisters are full on fighting.
Seeing this, Blake laughs slightly before saying, "Well, Ruby, Yang, it's a pleasure to ha-" before being cutoff by Weiss storming in on the scene in her faded blue nightgown with short sleeves and white trim with the Schnee Crest on the upper-right chest and wearing her hair down, and yells, "What in the world is going on over here?! Don't you realize some of us are trying to sleep?" At which point Weiss and Yang recognize one another before they both yell, "Oh, not you again!" to which Ruby steps in to try and deescalate the situation, "Shh! Guys, she's right! People are trying to sleep!" "Oh, now you're on my side!" Weiss hisses. "I was always on your side!" Ruby defends before Yang aggressively asks, "Yeah, what's your problem with my sister? She's only trying to be nice!" "She's a hazard to my health!" Weiss argues back.
Blake rolls her eyes at the fight, closes her book, reaches over to her candle and blows it out.
