THE VAMPIRE MIRACLE

3. THE FATHER?

"Go away I'm busy." The blonde yelled from her bedroom.

The blonde hadn't gotten out of bed since this morning. All she could think about is the baby, who apparently is a she. A daughter, her daughter.

"You know, you would really make a fantastic father. She's gonna be really lucky to have you."

Was what Katherine told Damon. Is Damon the father then? She has to find out. But she doesn't know where to start.

"You know, you should really be more careful who you invite in." Stefan said as he came into her bedroom.

"Ugh Stefan." Caroline groaned.

"Come on, get ready, we are going on a trip." Stefan told her.

"What—where?" Caroline asked as she sat up on her bed.

"You are going to find the antidote for the ripper virus. Is this clean?" Stefan asked her before coming up the empty glass cup that was on her nightstand.

"What are you doing?" Caroline asked as Stefan bites into his wrist.

"Bonnie said you need vampire blood for you and the baby to survive." Stefan replied as the blood dripped into the cup. "So here, drink." He handed her the cup.

The blonde looked at him like he's crazy. How is vampire blood going to help her, a vampire and the baby survive? After a second, she finally grabbed the cup. She looked at it before gulping it down. Surprisingly it didn't go back up like she thought it would.

"Mhmm finally." She said in relief.

~IN DOCTOR WES' MAKESHIFT LAB~

Caroline is shuffling through the remnants left behind in Dr. Maxfield's makeshift lab. She stumbles upon the tape recorder, which reinteraites that the virus Katherine infected Elena with contains trace amounts of Werewolf venom, which came from Nadia's infected blood.

"Oh my god." Caroline listened to the recorded message.

~WHITMORE~

Elena hangs up the phone and exits the makeshift phone booth. As she steps over to meet with Stefan, she gets dizzy and falls to the ground.

"You okay?" Stefan asked her.

"Uh.. not feeling so good, all of a sudden." Elena said finding her balance.

"That's because you're starving." Stefan told her.

"Yeah…" Elena nodded her head.

"Here, uh. I got you four ounces of my blood." Stefan takes the bottle out and places it on the bannister. "You won't be scaling any buildings, but it'll curb the cravings."

"Thank you." Elena opens the bottle and quickly drinks the blood. "I need more."

"Sorry." Stefan apologized.

"I feel fine, Stefan. I just need a little more." Elena begged.

"You're not fine, Elena." Stefan told her.

"Come on.. Trust me. I can handle this." Elena assured him.

"You think so?" Stefan asked.

"Yeah." Elena replied.

Stefan bites into his own arm. Once the blood starts falling to the ground, Elena's fangs protrude and she lunges toward him, stopped only by the protection spell.

"You're not fine, Elena." Stefan told her as his phone ranged.

Stefan picks up the phone and says "Hello"

"Please tell me that's some good news." Elena said.

"Bad news... It's not the same virus." Caroline said, over the phone, still in Wes' lab.

"What is it?" Stefan asked.

"Dr. Creepenstein was working on the next phase of the virus. When Nadia was sick, he was experimenting on her blood and he figured out a way to extract werewolf venom from her blood and put it in the virus." Caroline told him.

"Wait.. what do you mean "werewolf venom?" That means it's fatal." Stefan told her.

"Oh my god.." Elena gasped.

"Hello! You don't think I would just drop this on you without a silver lining! There's an antidote. It's in me." Caroline told him.

"Caroline.. that doesn't make any sense..How is the cure in you?" Stefan asked.

"Bonnie said, Nadia told her, the cure is her blood. And her blood technically runs through me." Caroline told him.

"Care, you're not suggesting that-" Stefan started.

"I am Stefan. What if it is?" Caroline asked him.

"Exactly, what if...You don't know for sure, Caroline." Stefan told her.

"I have to at least try, Stefan." Caroline told him.

"Fine. Meet me at the house." Stefan told her before hanging up. "I'll see you later."

"Stefan." Elena called.

"Yeah?" Stefan asked.

"What does Caroline means by the cure runs through her?" Elena asked.

"You really don't remember do you?"

"No. I don't." Elena replied.

"I think it's best if Caroline tells you herself." Stefan told her. "I gotta go."

~SALVATORE BOARDING HOUSE~

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Stefan asked as him and Caroline walked down the stairs to the basement, where Damon is held in the cell.

"I have to try, Stefan." Caroline said.

"What's going on?" Matt asked as he, Jeremy and Bonnie stood up from their spot in front of the cellar.

"Caroline has the cure for the virus." Stefan told them.

"That's great. Where is it?" Matt asked.

"It's my blood...well her blood." Caroline told them.

"Her blood?" Jeremy asked.

"Care…" Bonnie started.

"I have to try, Bonnie." Caroline told her.

"I wasn't going to...I'm glad you finally realized-" Bonnie started.

"I haven't realized anything, yet. I just—I want to at least try to help. But...that doesn't mean I'm on board with this whole "miracle baby" thing." Caroline told her.

"Miracle what?" Matt and Jeremy asked.

"Uh... I'll explain later. Promise" Caroline told him.

She looked at Stefan. Stefan opened the cellar door. He and Caroline went in as the other three stood in the doorway.

"Ugh Blondie, come to donate?" The raven asked.

"Something like that." Caroline replied.

Stefan grabbed the cup and handed it Caroline. Caroline's fanged extracted and she bit into her wrist. Damon eyes the blood dripping from

blonde's wrist as he feels the veins under his eyes became visible and his fangs extracted from his teeth.

After the cup was half full, the blonde gave the cup to the younger Salvatore. Bonnie handed her friend a cloth to wipe her blood off of as Stefan handed the blood to his brother. Damon immediately grabbed the cup and gulped it down as the other watched.

"So...do you think it worked?" Jeremy asked.

"What are you talking about?" Damon asked the young Gilbert boy.

"Give it a minute." Bonnie said.

"Uh Hello, I asked you a question." Damon said.

"Caroline baby's blood is the cure. Maybe." Stefan told him.

"Maybe?" Damon questioned.

"There's only one way to find out." Caroline said before extracting her fangs and biting down her wrist.

Damon feels his fangs extract again at the smell and sight of vampire blood. Moments later they disappeared and the hunger was gone.

"Well...it really is a miracle." Damon looked at Caroline.

~SALVATORE BOARDING HOUSE MAIN ROOM~

Damon stood by the fireplace as he held a drink on his hand. Caroline is in the kitchen with Bonnie, filling a small cylinder tube with Caroline's blood to give to Elena.

"She really is a miracle."

"You know, you would really make a fantastic father. She's gonna be really lucky to have you."

"Elena's pregnant?"

"Oh god no!"

"I'm pregnant"

"Caroline's baby is the cure"

"Oh." He let out.

It can't be right? How? He can't be the father. He's in love with Elena. He can't have a baby with another woman when he's in love with Elena. His Elena. The one he didn't know was possessed by her doppelgänger. Oh god, Elena. Does she know? She was there when Caroline told them but Stefan said she had forgotten what happened.

"So here is the blood for Elena." Caroline handed the blood to Damon.

Damon took a cylinder tube from her.

"Thanks." He said.

"Mhmm." Caroline hmmed before turning back around.

"Caroline…" Damon called.

Caroline turns back around to face the older Salvatore. She knew what he was going to ask and she doesn't have an answer for him.

"Miracle baby huh?" Damon raised his eyebrows at her.

"I guess so." She said.

"I-" Damon started.

"Look Damon…" Caroline interrupted him as Stefan, Bonnie, Jeremy and Matt came into the room. "I know what you're going to ask and to be honest with you, I don't have the answer you want to hear."

"And what is that I want to hear?" Damon asked her.

"That...you are not the father. But really, you and I both know she is yours. It's not that hard to put two and two together. Especially when your best friend evil Doppelgänger just revealed it out infront of your friends. Everyone was just too focus on making sure we get Elena back to notice. Sorry, heightened emotions...well more heightened than ever." She explained. "The point is Damon, there's a part of you that hoped she is yours and there's a part of you that hoped it isn't. Because if it is, it would ruin your chance of you being with Elena and god knows you don't want to let her go." Caroline told him. "I, on the other hand, do want to keep her even if she is going to be the most powerful creature in the whole wide world. The ball is in your court. You can either choose to be apart of your daughter's life or don't, I don't really care. But it's your choice." She told them before walking away.

Damon stared at his brother and friends He gulped down his drink before vampspeeding away.

"What do you think he's going to choose?" Jeremy asked.

"I don't know." Stefan replied.

~WHITMORE~

Elena is wandering around, inside the building, completely out of her mind. In her hallucinations, she sees Aaron again.

"Elena?" 'Aaron' asked.

"Oh my god. Aaron, are you alive?" She asked.

"You don't look so hot." He told her.

"No. No. I'm good now. I'm good now! I thought I killed you.. I didn't kill you! You're right here! You're stll alive!" Elena's joy turns to shock when her hallucination of Aaron lifts, revealing Aaron to actually be Damon standing before her.

"Elena.. Hey, it's Damon. You're hallucinating." Damon told her.

Elena clearly doesn't believe him, or doesn't want to.

"She won.. Katherine won." Elena said.

"Don't say that." Damon told her.

"Look at me, Damon. Look at me! Look at me! The plague of Katherine Pierce lives on. She's turning me into something that I'm not. I mean, look at me; I'm a monster. Liv.. the witch, I almost killed her! And my friends.. I want to kill my friends. I think I want to kill my friends." Elena cried.

"I'm here. It's okay" Damon tries to tell comfort her. "Here. Drink this." He hands her a the cylinder tube of blood. "It's the cure. Drink this." Damon told her.

Elena takes it and guzzles it down quickly.

"It's ok, Elena." Damon told her.

"No! It's not okay! It's not okay, Damon! I... I killed Aaron Whitmore." Elena told him.

"No." Damon told her.

"I keep seeing him, he keeps popping up everywhere. I'm hallucinating that Aaron's around." Elena told him.

"Look at me." Damon forces Elena to look at him.

"Look at me. You did not kill Aaron Whitmore. I did." Damon admitted.

"W-h-at.. What? Why.. was it because of the virus? Did you need to kill him?" Elena asked him.

"It was before I was infected. Listen, if you want the specifics, it was the night that I thought you broke up with me, Elena. I killed him to convince myself that you were right. That I was the type of person that can kill in cold blood and I was never going to change. That's why." Damon told her.

Elena looks at him, dumbfounded, not being able to summon up something to say.

"I need you to say something.. Please?" Damon begged.

~OUTSIDE, BACKYARD OF THE SALVATORE BOARDING HOUSE~

Caroline was outside, in the backyard, of the boarding when Stefan found her.

"You do know that Damon is going to want you to move in right?" Stefan asked as he handed the blonde a cup of his blood and sat down beside her.

"Thanks" Caroline replied before she took a sip out of the cup.

"So… you and Damon are having a baby." Stefan said.

"Mm. Yep...meaning if he chooses to be a part of her life." Caroline faced him.

"He will...I know he will want to be." Stefan told her.

"I doubt that." Caroline said facing forward again.

"He's not a bad person you know. Damon is…" Stefan started.

"Impulsive? Arrogant? Ruthless?" The blonde asked, taking a sip again.

"Yes but he is also protective, selfless from time to time…" Stefan told her.

"When he wants to be." Caroline interrupted him.

"He also has a heart. Though he doesn't show it as much as he should, he does have a heart. And...I think...no, I know...this baby is going to be good for him." Stefan told her.

The blonde turned to smile at the younger Salvatore. Damon Salvatore, a father. Who would have thought? Maybe this is a good thing after all, for all of them.
