4. TRAVELERS AND CHOICES

~DREAM SEQUENCE – MYSTIC FALLS~

In a cafe, Elena sits and writes in an open journal. After scribbling for a few moments, she becomes frustrated and rips one of the pages out of her journal. She puts a salt shaker over it to keep it from flying off into the wind, but it becomes dislodged. As she gets up to chase after it, Stefan picks it up and their eyes meet.

"You lose something?" Stefan asked.

"Uh, yes. It's a particularly mortifying page from my journal." Elena replied, getting up from her seat and walking toward him.

"Ah. You, uh, censor your journal? Pretty sure that's against journal rules." He joked.

"And I'm pretty sure that you're not the journal police. Trust me, it's really bad." She told him.

"I'm officially intrigued." Stefan smiled.

"And I'm officially not kidding. Thank you. I'm Elena." She introduced herself.

"I'm Stefan."

Suddenly, a car almost runs Stefan over in the street, while Elena jolts into consciousness, startled by the dream.

"You ok?" Caroline asked her friend.

"Yeah. I just- I just had a really crazy dream." Elena replied.

~SALVATORE BOARDING HOUSE~

Damon and Enzo are in the main living area, playing a game of pool and chatting.

"So you broke up. That I get. Then you slept together. Not smart, but again, I get it. Now here's where it gets a bit hazy for me. You went to a parent-teacher conference?" Enzo asked, confused.

"Jeremy was having some trouble at school." Damon explained.

"Right. Then the kicker. You offer to drive her back to campus, and she says she can't be around you. I mean, I'm just confused even thinking about it. Can't imagine how you feel." Enzo said.

"I'm fine. We're just taking some time apart." Damon told him.

"Yeah, of course. A friends phase, where you, her friend, watch as she moves on with her life, finds a new boyfriend, perhaps a nice gentleman from a fraternity- Chance or Brock." Enzo said.

"Does your mysteriously missing girlfriend know how insufferable you are? Maybe that's why you haven't found her. She doesn't want to be found." Damon told him.

"I haven't found her because the Travelers, i.e. my only lead, decided to play a fun game of spontaneous combustion before giving me what they promised." Enzo told him.

"Right. Now you're here annoying me." Damon said.

"We could always go kill people, but I suppose that's what got you into this problem in the first place." Enzo told him.

~MYSTIC GRILL~

Caroline and Elena enter the Grill.

"Well, I guess my mom's not here yet. I'm gonna get us some coffees." Caroline told her friend.

"Sure." Elena said.

Elena is grasping a set of keys in her hand. When she drops them, she starts daydreaming again. This time, she drops her keys in front of a house at night.

"Here you go." Stefan said as he handed her keys back to her.

"I'm gonna need these. I'm so clumsy." Elena said.

"So, uh, you hated the movie, huh?" Stefan asked.

"No. I didn't hate it. I just wasn't exactly paying attention either." Elena said.

Stefan and Elena both start speaking at the same time.

"So do you want to dinner some-" Elena said as Stefan said "We should, uh, do this again sometime. Yeah."

"Sure." Elena smiled.

"Good." Stefan smiled back.

They kiss. The porch lights turn on.

"Sorry. That's my dad, waiting up for me. So embarrassing." Elena said.

"I'm really looking forward to dinner." Stefan told her.

"Me, too." Elena replied, smiling.

"Good night." Stefan told her.

"Good night." Elena walks up to the door, and turns to wave to Stefan as he walks away.

"My mom's minutes away. Elena? Hello? Elena!" Caroline, called from a distance.

Elena snaps out of the vision.

"How did I get here? I was just standing at the doorway." Elena asked.

"Uh, you walked. Hang on. Did you just have one of those dreams, like, right here?" Caroline asked.

"It didn't feel like a dream, ok? It felt like it was real, like I was just there." Elena replied.

"That's weird." Caroline stated.

"Caroline, if you bite your tongue any harder, you'll bleed. Say it." Elena told her.

"It's psych 101. Actually, it's whatever comes before 101. You told Damon that you couldn't see him anymore, and now you're having dreams about Stefan?" Caroline asked.

"It's not just about Stefan, ok? My parents were still alive. It was like a different life." Elena told her before Caroline's cell phone rings and she picks it up.

"Stefan, hey." Caroline said.

"Hey." Stefan sighs.

"Is everything ok?" Caroline asked.

"Well, you know how sometimes you feel crazy and you call me and I tell you that you're not crazy?" Stefan asked.

"Even though most of the time I am." Caroline said.

"Well, I need you to tell me that I'm not crazy." He told her.

"Uh, no promises." She said.

"I was walking to my car, and I nearly got plowed over in the middle of the street because I was having some vision of Elena." Stefan explained.

"I take that back. Actually, you're not crazy at all. Something's going on." Caroline said looking at Elena.

~SALVATORE BOARDING HOUSE~

"Care to lose again, or shall we move on to step two of Elena-less Damon?" Enzo asked.

"You know, bringing up her name defeats the purpose of me trying to forget about her." Damon told him.

"Bring up whose name?" Enzo asked. "Elena." He whispered just as Damon's phone starts ringing.

"Whatever. Speak of the devil." Damon said looking at the caller ID.

~MYSTIC GRILL~

Elena is calling Damon when Matt walks in.

"Hey. Have you heard from my mom?" Caroline asked Matt.

"No. Why?" Matt asked.

"Well, she was supposed to meet me here, and now she's not texting me back. If you see her, will you just let her know that something came up?" Caroline asked him.

"Yeah, of course." Matt replied.

"Ok. Thanks." Caroline smiled before Matt walked away.

~SALVATORE BOARDING HOUSE~

Damon ignores Elena's call.

"Damon one, temptation zero." Damon smirked.

Just then Enzo's phone starts ringing. Enzo looked at the caller ID.

"Temptation one, Enzo- Hello, gorgeous." Enzo answers his phone.

"Can you tell Damon that there's something going on with Elena and Stefan?" Caroline told him.

Enzo puts Caroline on speaker.

"What?" Damon asked.

"Well, you know how we all laughed off the notion that the universe is drawing Stefan and Elena together?" Caroline asked.

"Yeah." Damon said.

"Well, that's happening." Caroline told him.

"What's happening?" Damon asked.

"Now that Stefan's doppel-him-" Caroline said.

"Tom?" Damon asked.

"Tom, yes. Now that Tom is dead, Stefan and Elena are the last pair of doppelgängers, which might explain why Stefan and Elena are suddenly having vision-type situations of each other." Caroline explained.

"Wait. What kind of visions?" Damon asked.

"You know what she's not telling you. Somebody's having sex dreams." Enzo said.

"They're not sex dreams." Elena said.

"Yeah. They're more like romance dreams." Caroline told them .

"I don't need to know that. Where's Stefan?" Damon asked.

"He went to find the Travelers to see if anyone's still there that can tell him what's going on." Caroline told them.

"Yeah, good luck with that." Enzo told her.

"Well, it's our only lead. Look. All we know is that Tom is dead, the Travelers just committed a mass suicide, and now Stefan and Elena, who are clearly not together anymore, are having intense visions of each other." Caroline told him.

"Find a witch, get her over here. Let's figure out what the hell's going on." Damon told her. "Oh and Caroline…" He called.

"Yeah?" Caroline asked.

"We have some things we need to discuss." Damon told her.

"Yeah ok." Caroline sighs before hanging up.

She looked up to her confused friend.

"Wha—what do you and Damon need to discuss about?" Elena asked.

"I'm—" Caroline looked at her friend. "I am pregnant, Elena."

"Wha—who's—who's—oh my god!" Elena gasped.

Caroline could see the hurt and betrayal in her friend's eyes.

"Elena—" The blonde started.

"We sh-should get to the board—boarding house." Elena stuttered before getting up.

~SALVATORE BOARDING HOUSE~

Caroline and Elena arrive; Enzo opens the door.

"I thought you were bringing a witch." Enzo said as the girls came into the house.

"We said we'd call her. We didn't say we'd pick her up." Caroline told him. "So where's,uh- where is my least favorite Salvatore?" She asked.

"Hi." Damon came into the room.

"Hi." Elena greeted him.

"So...who could use a drink from the library?" Enzo asked.

Damon and Caroline looked at each other.

"Am I missing something here or you two have something going on that—" Enzo started.

"Caroline's pregnant...and it's Damon's." Elena told him.

"Oh. Wow." Enzo said.

"Speaking of baby…" Damon vampspeed away and came back within seconds with a bottle in his hand. "Vampire blood...for you...and the baby of course."

"Of course." Caroline took the bottle from him.

"Don't worry, I didn't kill some random vampire. It's my blood." Damon told her.

"Hm. Thank you for the—for the blood. We're-ahm we're just going to be in the library." Caroline said before pulling Enzo away with her, leaving the two ex lovers to themselves.

"You and Caroline are having a baby." Elena said, trying to make conversations.

"Yeah, look like we are." Damon replied.

It was silent again.

"So—ahm how exactly did you two—"

"Same night. Night of Tyler's party. You, Katherine pretending to be you, broke up with me and Caroline was just here I came back. Well...no need to get into details." Damon said.

"Right, Katherine." Elena rolled her eyes at that name. "You got a pool table." She quickly changed the subject.

"Yeah. I figured that pool was a good outlet to put this pent-up energy that I seem to now have." Damon replied.

"Yeah. I went running today, 10 miles. Could have gone 20." Elena told him.

"Yeah." Damon said.

~LIBRARY~

Caroline eavesdrops while Enzo pours himself a drink.

"Oh. This is so bad. They're fishing for small talk. We should do something." Caroline said.

"Or we could stay and let them amuse us as they resist the desire to tear each other's clothes off." Enzo told her.

~PARLOR~

"Drink?" Damon asked Elena.

"Probably not a good idea. Inhibitions and all." Elena told him.

"Well, wouldn't want that." Damon said.

"Can we not do this?" Elena asked.

"We're not doing anything. I think that's part of the problem. We're just standing clothed, just standing, doing nothing." Damon told her.

"I mean, the whole strained, awkward, don't know how to act part." Elena said.

"Oh." Damon said.

"Can't we just be friends and do friendly things?" Elena asked. "I mean you're having a kid with my...best friend." Elena said.

"And you're having sex dream about my brother." Damon said.

"Wow! Ok. Yeah, that's definitely one way to change the subject." Elena said.

"Well, you kind of made it uncomfortable with the whole me having a baby...with your best friend. I just thought I'd skip the uncomfortable parts.

"Yeah. Look. I don't know what the visions mean, Damon. It's just random snippets of Stefan and me living in some alternate reality. And about your baby...congratulations, you'll make a wonderful father." Elena said.

"No I won't. But I can at least try." Damon said.

"Right." Elena said.

"Ok, I'm gonna regret this, but... By any chance are fantasy Elena and fantasy Stefan really, really, really happy?"

"Um…" Elena didn't know what to say.

Yeah they were happy. Really really happy. But it wasn't real.

"Right. Well, as your friend, let me state the obvious that the prophecy says that you two are fated to be together. You're supposed to be together." Damon pointed out.

There's a loud knock at the door. Damon answers it.

"We're all good on bibles, thanks." Damon starts to shut the door but he stops him.

"I'm Luke Parker, Liv's twin brother." He introduced himself.

"Liv has a twin? Is it possible for there just to be one of someone around here?" Damon asked.

"Where's Liv?" Elena asked.

"Busy." Luke replied.

"Come on in." Damon sighs.

"What do you mean you can't stop their visions?" Damon asked.

"Our magic doesn't work like that. We're not bigger than the universe." Luke told him.

"Then why are you in my house?" Damon asked.

"Because we need your help. We think the Travelers are about to make their move. Their leader Markos is here." Luke told them.

"From where? Chant camp?" Damon asked, jokingly.

"The other side. He's been dead for centuries, and we think the fire sacrifice allowed him to escape." Luke said.

"Perfect. A dead old guy with a mysterious, evil plan. I'll take that drink now." Elena said as she got up from her spot on the couch.

"Stefan just called. He said the scrap yard has been completely cleared out." Caroline said as she came into the room.

"And let me guess- the witches don't know where Markos is." Damon said.

"You guys said the visions are trying to draw Elena and Stefan together for something." Luke said.

"For our doppelgänger blood. The Travelers need it for some prophecy." Elena replied.

"And if the Travelers are the ones who need your blood, doesn't it make sense that you're not only being drawn together but also…" Luke started.

"Being drawn to them." Elena said.

"Well, this just keeps getting better and better." Damon said.

"Wait. I don't get it." Caroline announced.

"If the visions are a road map, then we need more clues. Break out the popcorn, blondie. Elena's little sex romp isn't over yet." Enzo said.

Later, at night, Damon is sitting outside drinking. Caroline walks up behind him.

"I'm sorry if I made things complicated." The blonde apologized.

"Yeah i don't think you were the one that made it complicated blondie." Damon told her as she sat down beside him. "The other day you gave me a choice. I have been thinking…and when I was human...all I wanted to be was a father. After Katherine, I knew that wasn't a choice anymore. So yes, Caroline. I want to be a part of my—our daughter's life. If we have to work 10 times harder to make this work, I am willing to put in that work. Even putting her before me. Because I know I can't be selfish when it comes to her." Damon told her.

"Hmm, Stefan thinks she is going to be good for you." Caroline told him.

"Yeah? What do you think, Caroline?" Damon asked her.

"I don't know what I think Damon. There's a part of me thinks she is going to be good for all of us and then there's a part of me, wishes that she didn't have to grow up in this very dangerous world." Caroline told him.

"Yeah, I know." Damon sighs.

"Listen, if we're going to do this, we have to promise that no matter what happens, she comes first. Whether either one of us or our friends are in danger, or even if she is in danger, she is our number one priority. Because Damon, I can't imagine what would happen once she is born, especially when people are after her…" Caroline told him.

"Caroline…" Damon puts his hands over the blonde's. "I promise to put our daughter's safety first, above mine, yours and everyone else's." Damon told her.

"Good." Caroline said.

Caroline's phone dinged just as Elena came outside.

"It's my mom. I've got to go." Caroline said standing up and facing the two.

"I'll drive you." Damon said getting up.

"Damon, I'm pregnant, not paralyzed." Caroline stopped him. "And besides you have some problems you have to work through." She told Damon. "I'll see you back on campus?" She asked her friend.

"Yeah sure. Drive safe, Care." Elena told her friend as the blonde walked away.

Damon sat back down, his back facing the brunette.

"So...what are you doing out here in the first place?" Elena asked.

"Aw, you know, looking at the stars, listening to the universe laugh at me." Damon replied.

"Damon." Elena sat down next to him.

"We were doomed from the beginning, Elena. We were always gonna end up here." Damon told her.

"Damon, they're just visions. As soon as we find Markos, they'll stop." Elena told him.

"And then what? We're friends? Can't wait." Damon said.

"Look. I know we're in a little bit of a weird place right now.

Hey. Look at me. The universe doesn't control anything. It's not real." Elena told him.

Elena starts having another vision of her and Stefan. They're in a kitchen.

"Hey." Stefan greeted her.

"You're really trying to pull off this chef thing." Elena said.

"Yeah. Well, it's our anniversary, so, uh, no holding back." Stefan told her.

"Well, if it turns out anything like your last 22 attempts, wine." Elena told him.

"Mmm. Perfect." Stefan agreed.

"I always forget. Where do we put the opener?" Elena asked as she starts opening the drawers.

"Oh. No, no, no. Not that drawer, not that one." Stefan said a little too late.

Elena finds a small black ring box. She's emotionally happy.

"Yes." She answers.

"You didn't even open it." Stefan told her.

"I don't have to." Elena told him before they start making out.

"I love you." Stefan told her.

"I love you, too." Elena replied.

A stack of mail falls to the ground. Elena sees an address on an envelope before she snaps out of the vision.

"Elena." Damon called.

Elena wakes from the vision, the glass broken in her hand.

"Hey." Damon said.

"Did I just-" Elena started.

"Yep." Damon replied.

"That good, eh?" Enzo asked.

"He's here. I know where Markos is. 4620 Walnut Drive." Elena said as she went inside.

~WALNUT DRIVE~

Damon and Enzo enter the house at the address Elena saw. Damon tests the entryway, but isn't barred – no human owns the house.

"Huh. Clear." Damon said.

"I wonder if this is where Stefan and Elena had crazy vision-sex. Eh, it's probably the bedroom. Stefan's pretty vanilla, but apparently that's Elena's favorite flavor." Enzo said as they went through the house.

"I'm gonna staple your tongue to your chin." Damon warned him.

"Not in my house, please." A voice said.

"Markos I take it. Well, I'm not Stefan, and this is not Elena." Damon told him.

"Why are you here?" Markos asked as he stood up.

"I was about to ask you the same question. Plus, what do you want, and why are the doppelgängers having visions of each other?" Damon asked.

"First two are complicated. Last one's easy. I'm the reason Stefan and Elena are having visions of each other." Markos replied.

"You?" Damon asked.

"Well, would you look at that. I think we just met the universe." Enzo said.

"You mind telling me what the hell is going on?" Damon asked.

"I'm afraid the doppelgänger lore's been misinterpreted over the ages." Markos said.

"As in there is no prophecy?" Damon asked.

"The prophecy is that the doppelgänger blood can help the Travelers, but they're being drawn together because of a spell I cast 1500, years ago. I had no idea where they were, and it turns out the best way to get people to go searching for each other is the promise of true love. Is it stuffy in here? Why don't we take a walk?"Markos said to Damon. "You stay here." He said to Enzo.

"Not bloody likely." Enzo replied.

"You want to find Maggie? You stay here." Markos told him. "Shall we?" He asked Damon.

Later, Damon and Markos are walking down a street in downtown Mystic Falls.

"Mystic Falls is a beautiful town." Markos said.

"Oh, yeah. Picket fences, block parties, uncannily high death rate." Damon told him.

"You take your homes for granted." Markos said.

"I'm sorry. Are we walking so I don't fall asleep?" Damon asked.

"Two thousand years ago, Silas and Qetsiyah cast a spell for immortality. It created a schism in the Traveler community, giving rise to the witches. They tried to keep us scattered to make us forget how powerful we can be." Markos explained.

"And thus began the war between the Travelers and the witches, and it's still rages on and on. Sorry. I just nodded off." Damon told him.

"The witches put a curse on us that kept us from settling down as a tribe. Whenever we've tried to gather, disaster struck- Plagues, earthquakes, fire. Something inevitably wiped us out." Markos explained.

"Let me guess- the doppelgängers can fix this. So you found them. Now what?" Damon asked him.

"We simply need their blood, and something more but we're not your enemy, Damon, and to prove that to you, I'm gonna stop their visions." Markos told him before all around them, townspeople stop what they're doing and turn to face Markos. They start chanting.

"What do you mean by something more?" Damon asked.

Markos turned to look at Damon.

"The baby of yours of course. Who do you think made it happen?" Markos asked.

"Wait hold on you're saying, the baby that Caroline's carrying, my child, you made her? As in, she's not mine?" Damon asked.

"She was supposed to be created from the last two Doppelgängers themselves but being doppelgänger blood is quite boring to be honest. So I, meaning my people, from my orders of course, spiced it up a little. Though she still needed to be Salvatore's blood since it was Silas' blood that was first to create the doppelgänger curse. The next time you do the deed, well you know how babies are made. Although I'll say the timing was impeccable." Markos told him. "The curse might prevent us from gathering in our own bodies, but we've found ways around that." He told him.

"Passengers. So how many of you are there?" Damon asked.

"A few... Here and there. But with your daughter's help, hopefully we can all come together and be in one place without causing havoc." Markos told him.

"And how is my daughter supposed to help with your little problem here?" Damon asked.

"She is supposed to be one of the most powerful creatures ever created. A witch and vampire hybrid. A heretic to be exact." Markos told him.

"I thought those don't exist." Damon told him.

"There are very little of them. But they do exist. Except, they're not like the one you're going to have." Markos told him. "This is our home too now because we aren't going anywhere until that baby is born."

~SALVATORE BOARDING HOUSE~

Elena awakes from the vision she just had, tears in her eyes. Stefan enters the room.

"Elena." Stefan called.

"Did you feel that, too?" Elena asked him.

"And then it just ended." Stefan nodded.

"Does that mean that it's over?" Elena asked.

"Yeah. It's over." Stefan told her.

A short time later, they're sitting together in front of the hearth.

"They weren't real." Elena said. "It was a spell, showing us what we wanted to see." Stefan told her.

"We weren't vampires, my parents were still alive. It was a fantasy, like a movie. It was the life that we never could have had." Elena said.

"But it still felt-" Stefan started.

"Amazing?" Elena asked.

"Yeah. But, you know, the life that we had, I mean, that was amazing, too, and it wasn't a spell or a prophecy. It was real. We fell in love on our own. We had ups and downs, we fought." Stefan told her.

"I died." Elena said.

"Yeah. We changed, both of us. We grew, and we grew apart, but that is real. I mean, that's life." Stefan told her.

"You couldn't cook." Elena smiled.

"And you could. Again, a fantasy. I'll always love you, Elena." Stefan told her.

"I will always love you, too." Elena rests her head on Stefan's shoulder. "Do you think Damon and I will ever be able to talk like this, like friends?" She asked.

"I think you can either be friends with someone or in love with them. I don't think you can be both." Stefan told her.

~FORBES HOUSE~

Caroline is talking to Tyler on the phone.

"I gave her my blood, but what do I do? She's still unconscious." Caroline told him.

"For starters, relax. Matt said he was out for a while when this happened to him." Tyler told her.

"What are they doing here? This is our home. We can't let them take over." Caroline told him.

"They won't. I got it handled, I promise." Tyler told her.

"Thanks, Tyler." Caroline smiled. "You're welcome." Tyler told her.

"I got to go. She's waking up." She smiled. "Hey." She said to her mom.

"What happened?" Liz asked her daughter.

"You missed lunch." Caroline replied as she hugged her mother. "We've got a lot to talk about." She told her.

~SALVATORE BOARDING HOUSE~

Elena stands in Damon's room as Damon enters.

"I think we need some rules here because if I'm not allowed to drive you home, then I definitely don't think you're allowed to ambush me in my bedroom." Damon told her.

"I just- I just wanted to say thank you. Whatever you did, it worked." Elena faced him.

"Oh. Well, I'm sorry to tear you away from paradise." Damon apologized walking toward her.

"It was paradise, actually." Elena said.

"I told you I don't want to know." Damon told her.

"But you need to know. I saw a perfect life. Stefan and I were married, and we had kids. It was everything that we wanted." Elena told him.

"Well, we can always ask Markos to put it back." Damon told her.

"But it's not real. You and I, we're messy and complicated, but we're real." Elena told him.

"And really bad for each other. Did you forget that part?" Damon asked her.

"Yeah, but I still need you in my life." Elena said to him.

"As friends, right? Right. No, Elena. I can't be your friend. It's too damn hard." He told her.

"Damon-" Elena started.

"No. I'm serious, Elena. I can't see you anymore. I don't want to hear your voice, I don't want to talk to you, I don't even want to look at you, and I sure as hell don't want to be your friend." He told her.

"If that's what you want…" Elena said.

"That's what I want." Damon told her.

"Ok. Yeah. Ok." Elena said.

"I'm sorry Elena but after what the travelers have caused, we were never meant to be." Damon told her.

"The travelers? Katherine was the one that ruined things. If she hadn't passengered herself into me, none of this would have happened." Elena told him.

"Yeah, Katherine was the one that ruined our relationship, I'll give you that. But it was my choice to sleep with Caroline that same night. And we wouldn't be having this baby if the travelers didn't make it happen." Damon confessed.

"What do you mean by if the travelers didn't make it happen?"

"Caroline and I are both vampires, we physically can't have kids. But Markos created her so he could use her to help the travelers. They aren't going anywhere until she is here." Damon told her.
