"... And that concludes the lesson for today. All of you have a safe trip back home and enjoy your weekend."
The class instructor concluded the period and the students began to flood out of the classroom. All that was left was a young girl in a orange skirt with black leggings and converses and a young boy in a red shirt with brown shorts and high socks with sneakers along with a brown hat.
"Oh, Miss Lena." The teacher called out to the young girl who was packing up her books in her bag.
"Yes Miss Dawn?"
"May you be so kind as to take him with you as well? Be sure to remind him of the homework he has to do." She said as she pointed towards the young boy who was fast asleep on desk.
The young girl nodded as the teacher left the classroom with papers in hand. Lena walked towards the sleeping boy and shook his shoulder until he started to stir awake.
He grumbled a bit before he opened his eyes.
"Where am I?" He asked as he wiped the sleep out of his eyes.
"We're at school and class is over Jeremy." Lena answered.
The boy sighed in relief.
"But you can't forget your homework this time love."
His sigh was followed by small grumbles and curses which she giggled at.
The two students packed the rest of their belongings and left out of the school building. The fall air was nice and chill as they walked back to their neighborhood. It's been about six years since these two met and their friendship has yet to falter. Even when they started back to school, they continue to stick together like glue.
"I hate when she gives us stupid homework. I can't understand any of this crap. Who even gives homework on the weekends?" He said as he looked through the sheets of equations and questions.
"You ever think it's because you're asleep half of the period." She pointed out.
"Coach wants us to practice more. Gotta keep racking up those wins."
"Oh right... You guys sure have been playing hard."
"Heck yeah! I can smell the second trophy already." He said as he flashed usual smile.
Lena lingered on his smile for a moment. She has seen his smile many times before but it was different this time.
It was a bit more...Charming
"Yo Lena?" He called out which brought her back to reality.
"Yes buddy?"
"I was wondering how your aircraft was doing. I remember you telling me a bit about it."
"It's almost ready for launch. I'll show it to you tomorrow after school." She was touched that he remembered her project.
"Nice. Well, I should probably head home. I need to figure out how to do all of this." He said as he went over the sheets of equations.
"...I can help you with that." She offered.
"Really? I wouldn't want to bother you Lena. Sides, don't you have this to do too?"
She giggled as she puffed out her chest.
"I finished mines already." She said.
"Wha- Already!?" Jeremy said in disbelief.
She shook her head as she pulled out her sheets of solved equations.
"I did all of them when we got ten minutes of rest time. Teach even looked it over and said it's all correct." She revealed.
"You did your homework at school? Isn't that cheating?" He asked. He has never heard of a tactic like that.
"All that matters is that I can help you, so when can I stop by your house?"
"My house!?" He cried in shock. He has been to her house before but this was a second for her to visit his own. He worried that his house wouldn't fit up to her standards.
"What's wrong?"
"Can I just come by your house like usual?" He offered.
"Our house is being patched up due to some nasty accident... I was really hoping to just spend the rest of the day at your house because I don't like the hotel we're in so please!" She begged.
Jeremy was about to refuse but he was powerless to a technique that she learned throughout their years together.
The puppy dog eyes.
It took him ten seconds to crack.
"Alright! Alright! You can come by at three. My ma and I should be the only one there by then." He said in defeat.
"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"
She squealed with delight as she closed the distance with a hug. It lasted for a moment before she waved goodbye and headed back to the hotel. He quickly sprinted back to his house in good time to prepare for his guest.
A coupe hours later
Knock knock
"Who could that be?" A woman asked as she walked towards the door. She slowly peeked and saw a young girl with messy brown hair.
"Hello miss! Is Jeremy here?" She asked.
"Oh you must be that girl he was talking about. He's in the room to the left. There's also some snacks on the kitchen if you two get hungry."
Lena thanked the woman as she made her way to his room. Lena was amazed at how nice and simple his house is. It had more a cozy feeling to it compared to her own home.
She knocked on the door to his room.
"Come in." he said.
She opened the door at his command. She found him tossing a ball at the wall as he sat on his bed. She recalled the first time she was in this room. There were a few additions of a trophy along with some posters but everything was the same just like the day of his big game.
"You've certainly tidied up a bit in here since last time."
"Really?- I mean, thanks Lena. So, when are we gonna get started on the math thingies? I want to get my weekend started as soon as possible."
"Way ahead of you." She said as she pulled out her sheets of equations and compared it to his. The first few minutes that passed was a bit difficult since Jeremy only understood half of what was being showed.
"Man this is hard! How the frick do you even solve this!?"
Lena thought for a moment until she finally found a way to solve his dilemma. She started to toss in phrases he knew and the questions were a bit more clear to him. He slowly started to understand them.
"So, if number three is in the outfield, it's a what?"
"An outlier cause it's the furthest from the field!"
She smiled at the amount of progress he was blé to make.
"Well, you should be ready for that test on Friday." She said as she packed up her notes.
"Gee Lena, you're the smartest girl I know." He said which caused her to pause her packing.
"Really?"
"Yea, I would've been mulling over these questions for the whole weekend if it wasn't for you. I can always count on you Lena."
Hearing that praise certainly made her feel a bit embarrassed. She could feel her cheeks changing to a shade of red.
"That's what friends are for Jeremy... well, I should get going." She said.
"Oh... already?" He said with a hint of sadness.
"Yeah, my parents should be at the hotel by now so I should get going. I'm thankful for your hospitality."
She was at the door until Jeremy called out to her.
"Hey Lena..."
She turned towards him which caused his words to get stuck in his throat. He managed out a single sentence.
"Still up to show me the aircraft tomorrow?" He asked.
"Of course love!" She said with a bright smile as she left out of the door. He stood there in thought over that nickname that she calls him. It feels different now than what it did a couple of years ago. A new feeling he's not familiar with... but not afraid to embrace.
"Maybe I'll try to stay awake next time."
Yoo my guy, hope y'all like the update. See y'all through a scope... or maybe in a cave ;)
