Chapter 3
Unsurprisingly, Jessica immediately stopped in her chatter at the prospect of gossip. I was curious because it was rare for Bella to ask about others. A quick glance made me understand her curiosity. I did not look back at them as Jessica started her spiel. Trying to be discreet she lowered her voice and made head gestures. The keyword here being 'trying.'
"They are the adopted children of Dr Cullen. They came from Alaska a few years ago and they don't mingle. They keep to themselves and don't talk much to the other students. The blond girl is Rosalie Hale and the buff guy next to her is Emmett Cullen. The other blond who looks like he is in pain is Jasper Hale, Rosalie's twin. Alice Cullen is the short one. She is really weird. And hear that. They are together, like together-together! Dr Cullen is a pseudo matchmaker. Jasper is Alice's boyfriend and Emmett is Rosalie's."
"Jess they are not related! Don't say that!" Said Angela.
"Yea but they live together! It's weird."
Frankly I didn't care. It was none of my business and I don't understand why Jessica was making it hers. I looked at her incredulously. Guess that if she didn't have the Cullens to gossip about some poor other chap would have been the victim.
"Who is the one with the brown hair?" Bella asked.
Again I was surprised. Perhaps the hormones were now taking a hold of my sister.
"That's Edward Cullen. He is absolutely gorgeous, obviously and nobody here is good enough for him. Like I care you know." Jessica said with a false smile.
'Oh you obviously care. Must have burnt badly when you were rejected. Seriously the guy has the right to refuse any advances he doesn't like, he is not entitled to anyone. Specially if he has ever heard the gossips you spread about about his family.' I thought as I took a bite of my pizza.
But a guy that can get my sister's attention really intrigues me. Like me, Bella has never really been attracted to any guy. And relationships were never a necessity to us like it seemed to be with most people.
I quickly glanced at this Edward and my first though was : 'Huh lion king. Is that natural like Harry Potter or did he have a brushing?'
His hair was wild, like he repeatedly push his hand through it, with bronze/brown/red highlights.
'Really unique.' I thought to myself.
"Really don't waste your time." Jessica said to Bella. As for me she clearly saw I wasn't interested.
Bella: "I wasn't going to."
By the way she kept glancing at this Edward, she clearly didn't mean it. I sent her a 'Really Bella' look, with one eyebrow raised and all, when she looked at me.
'My look at her blush.'
I gave her a bemused look. Well whatever floats her boat, I shrugged. Throughout lunch Bella kept glancing and sometimes outright stared unconsciously at the Cullen table. I poked her sometimes to make her stop. It was rude. I didn't appreciate it when people did it to me, neither did my sister by the way, the least she could is not do the same to others.
I saw Edward Cullen send me and my sister perplexed looks when I occasionally glanced at their table to see whether they caught her staring. I even purposefully caught his eyes one time, with an eyebrow raised, to question his confused sneaky glances. The dude had the gall to smirk at me. So the other eyebrow joined its sister; never twins.
Fortunately, nobody caught that little interaction. I continued facing my greasy pizza till the of lunch break. At the sound of the bell, I quickly gathered my things, said a 'it was nice to meet you to the others' and a 'see you later' to my sister.
By the time I entered the English Literature classroom, most of the seats were filled. I made my way to the teacher, "Hello I am Adaline Swan. Mrs Cope told me to have my teachers sign this slip."
Thankfully the teacher didn't make me introduce myself in front of class. He just introduced himself, gave me back the slip and told me to go sit near Alice Cullen. Turning to face the class, I saw a hand waving erratically in the air.
"Adaline here!"
I made my way to her as she continued to wiggle in her seat. She gave me a big smile when I reached her and put out her hand, "Hi I am Alice Cullen! I am sooo happy to meet you! I can't wait for us to go shopping! We are going to be great friends!"
I sent her a combination of bemusement, astonishment and amusement as I shook her hand. 'I just met you but okay…. Guess she heard my name from the rumor mill. She sure is excited but she is so cute. Why are her hands so cold though?'
"Hello Alice, it is a pleasure to meet you too. I don't know about great friends but I can start at just being a simple friend first. We shall see about the 'great' later. As for shopping, sure when we have become better acquainted and have time." I said to her with a polite smile.
She gave an excited squeak and started jumping in her seat. "Please calm down Alice. Class is about to start. Seriously you look like a little pixie with a sugar rush. So sweet!" I told her with a warm smile. She was just so small and adorable. Made you want to smother her.
Alice smiled shyly at me in response. 'Aw she is embarrassed! The only thing is that there is no blush to indicate so. How intriguing..'
We faced the front of the class as the lecture started. From time to time, I could see Alice glance at me with an enigmatic smile from my peripheral vision. I didn't like talking during classe, so I just smiled or raised an eyebrow at her at times.
When class finally ended, Alice jumped at the chance to start talking. She continued questioning me as we made our way out of the class. "So what do you prefer dresses or trousers? You don't seem like you own that many dresses. Oh and what about heels? What colour do you refer? Can I help you do your hair sometimes?"
'Sweetheart breathe! You don't even look like you need me to answer! It's just like she already knows them.."
Fortunately a soothing voice with a trace of southern drawl interrupted her, "Alice she can't answer if you don't give her time to." He then sent her a crisped teasing smile.
From what I remembered, he was Jasper Hale. He stood rigidly next to the door and kept sending me confused looks.
"Adaline this is Jasper, my boyfriend. Jazz this is Adaline Swan, my new friend."
"Hello nice to meet you." I said.
"Nice to meet you too maꞌam." Surprisingly he offered me his hand to shake. He didn't look like the type of person to like such interactions so I had prevented myself from offering mine first.
He looked conflicted as he shook my hand. Like he wanted to continue holding it or couldn't wait to let go at the same time. And his hand was cold like Alice's too.
"It was nice meeting you Jasper. Alice you too. We'll talk later. I have to get to my next class. Bye bye!" I said while waving and smiling at them. As I walked away I could hear Alice asking Jasper what was wrong.
The rest of my classes passed in peace. Well if you excluded the staring and bad attempts at flirting. A cold glance and a few sarcastic remarks quickly nipped that in the bud. I had Rosalie Hale in one of my classes. We didn't interact and we sat far apart, but she did send me a cautious look. I smiled at her and then minded my own business. That was the extent of our interaction.
At the last bell, I quickly gathered my things and made my way to the exit. Bella and I had decided to meet near the office to give back our slips. I saw her in front of the office as I approached, "What's wrong Bella? You don't look so good."
"Not now, please Addy. Let's give this thing back and go home."
"Okay." I said while putting my arm around her. I was not one to force someone to do something they didn't want to do. And I really needed my alone time too. Being among people tended to drain me and make me become irritated. I had to recharge alone. Any introverts can relate I am sure.
As we entered, we saw Edward Cullen talking to Mrs Cope. Bella took my arm and tugged me to wait near the wall next to the door. We could hear from here that he was trying to change his Biology classes.
'Is he trying to charm an old lady just to change classes…?! Oh god that is awkward and pitiful to watch. Sweet baby jesus, was he that desperate?'
Poor boy wasted his wiles for nothing as his request was rejected. All the other classes were full.
A glance at Bella showed that she had paled even further, if that was possible. "Did he do something to you?" I asked.
At the same time, someone opened the door, letting in a gush of cold air.
Edward stopped in his…flirting… and rigidly turned around.
I looked at him in shock.
'Where, in merlin's name, did the boy at lunch go?'
Edward looked way different now. He looked threatening with his dark glare and clenched jaw. And all of it was directed at my sister.
' What happened between these two for him to glare at her like he wants to kill her? He looks inhuman. And I swear to merlin that I heard a slight growl!'
" Mr Cullen, are you finished with your business? If so, kindly move on. We have matters to attend to with Mrs Cope." I said as I stepped in front of Bella and gave him a frigid smile.
At that, he turned to Mrs Cope, thanked her and practically ran out the room as if the bats of hell were after him. Now was not the right time to pick at Bella's brain so I took her hand and walked to Mrs Cope. I gave her both slips, briefly replied to her questions and quickly left the office with Bella.
As we made our way to the car, I asked for the car keys. She wasn't in the right mind to drive right now. There weren't that many people left in the parking lot so we got in the car uninterrupted.
"When we get home, go shower first. I'll prepare dinner in the meantime. After I have finished showering too, then we'll talk with a mug of hot chocolate in hand, okay?"
"Okay." Bella replied.
With that I got the car running and got out of the parking lot.
'What a tiring and confusing day.' I thought as we made our way home.
